Harware Setup Opinion Solicitation

Ok guys, wanted to get everyone's opinion on basically how I should set up my hard disks.  Here's my complete system breakdown.
Haswell 4770
Nvidia 760 with 4Gb
MOBO: asrock pro3 z87
32 gigs ram @ 1866mhz
Samsung EVO 120gb
PNY XLR8 240gb
Seagate Barracuda 1tb
WD Blue 1tb
WD Blue 1tb
WD USB external 1.5tb
I use Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop pretty much equally.  I don't have a RAID controller, and not sure that I want to spend another $300+ bucks (my understanding of where a decent one starts) though I suppose I could be talked into it (my birthday is coming up after all), and not 100% sure if my mobo would support a RAID controller but I don't see why not.  I probably wouldn't want to spend any more than 500 on one, preferable less (I'm not a big wig yet).
Anyway, looking for opinions on how to distribute my cache, project files, exports, etc.  My current setup is:
Samsung EVO: OS, programs, pagefile (set to 1gb min and 16gb max)
PNY SSD: cache, scratch disks
Seagate: source material
WD Blue: exports
WD External: Backups
(I haven't installed the other WD Blue yet)
And here's what I'm thinking about doing:
EVO: OS, programs, Pagefile
PNY: Cache, scratch, previews,
Seagate: project files
WD: orginal media
WD: original media (possibly these two WD's in RAID1)
external: export
(and possibly RAID 1 for the two WD)
Thanks in advance!
Oh and one other dumb question: how do you control where the preview files go?
Edit: aaaand just one more Q.  There looks like there's a lot of eye popping deals for RAID cards on ebay.  There's an areca 1680 sitting there for under $300.  Yay or nay?

Ok here's how I set things up for right now:
EVO: OS, programs, pagefile
PNY SSD: cache, previews, windows cache, scratch
Seagate: Project Files
WD: Source Files
WD: Exports
external: backups
This seems to be doing me right for now.  I haven't RAID'ed anything, but I was sort of thinking of doing a software RAID1 with the two WD's.  Thumbs up?  Suggestions?

  • Adobe Audition with M-Audio Fast Track Pro mic input

I must be missing a setting somewhere.  I have two mics going into the M-Audio Fast Track Pro (XLR inputs).  Mic 1 works fine but no input from Mic 2 although I have audio coming through my headsets when speaking into Mic 2 - it just doesn't register in Adobe Audition.  I have switched mics and cables and all are fine.  The issue is with Mic 2.
Again, Mic 1 is working fine and Mic 2 is picking up audio and feeding to my headphones but not to Adobe Audition.  I have all the latest drivers installed.
I am on a Win7 (32bit) system.  Microphones are Shure PG-42's (phantom powered condenser microphones).
I contacted M-Audio support and phone-verified that all Fast Track Pro settings were proper.  Seems to be a setting or driver issue in Audition.  I've spent hours trouble-shooting to no avail.  In the meantime, I'm using a Y-splitter running both mics into Mic Input 1 on the Fast Track Pro which works fine but I really need seperate control over each microphone.  I have interviews coming up soon and would like to find a resolution quickly.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!

Archie!  Good stuff!  I'm almost there...
I've got my Adobe Audition set up with the settings you gave me - everything is armed and good-to-go... but then...
When I hit record Tracks one and two look like they're recording but there is no level (no audio) going into the tracks.
If I go back to the Edit view and try to record the entire fills with green as if I'm filling it 100% with sound.  This has never happened before.
I suspect I've got something hosed-up in my "Audio Hardware Setup" under the Edit section.
My selections for Audio Driver Setup are:
    1)  M-Audio USB ASIO
    2)  ASIOforALLv2
    3)  Audition 3.0 Windows Sound
If you could give me some direction as to the settings in "Audio Harware Setup" I feel I've almost got it.
    Thanks!

  • VLAN SETUP - NEEDS YOUR OPINION

    HI,
We just purchased 3 Cisco SG200 50 Port Switch. Please bear with me because I am only
new to Cisco switch and no nothing about IOS only rely on GUI. I also have a query on VLANS
settings. I am new to VLANS though I have read information about it and now I am applying it into production.
    My first query is:
Is the Cisco SG200 50 Ports Switch is a Layer 2 or Layer 3 switch? if Yes how to convert it.
I want to separate all the servers, printers and  users into different vlans and switches.
I am not sure as well if this is a good setup.
    Switch 1 - VLAN 10 = All the Servers  (6 Servers)
         E/01 DC
         E/02 DC
         E/03 FILE STAFF
         E/04 FILE STUDENTS
         E/05 WEB
         E/06 BACKUP
    Switch 1 - VLAN 20 = All the Printers  (3 Printers)
    Switch 1 - VLAN 30 = Wireless Access Points (5 WAP)
Switch 1 - VLAN 40 = All IP Phones (VOICE) (12 IP Phones)
    Switch 2 - VLAN 50 = Staff PC   (40 Machines)
    Switch 3 - VLAN 60 = Student LAB 1  (25 Machines)
    Switch 3 - VLAN 70 = Student LAB 2  (25 Machines)
    A. Let say how can VLAN 50 (staff) access VLAN 10 (servers) without using a Router
and I am only using the said model above? Is this possible?
    B. How can I connect VLAN 60 (Student Lab 1) to access on 1 server on VLAN 10 on this port E/04?
    C. Also connecting VLAN 50 (Staff PC) to access the Printer on VLAN 20 in switch 1?
    D. Do different VLANS mentioned above needs to be in separate subnets or one will work?
Sorry and be patient about me I am just a newbie in Cisco and VLAN.
Any suggestion will highly be appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

    Hi Arth020271,
Keeping in mind you have a SG200 smart switch that is supported by the wonderful  poeple at  Small Business Support Center.
There are lots of router choices that support trunked VLANsyou have a few choices.
I persoanally like the SA500 series that supports routing between  16 VLANs, specifically the SA540 due to it's large number of  SSL VPN capacity.
    Datasheet on this product follows;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9932/prod_models_comparison.html
The benefit of this router is that it is also supported by the Small Business Support Center which makes support for the overall solution much much easier.
If you wish to see the easy GUI of these product, there is also a emulator or simulator for the SA500 product at the URL  below.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/small-business/onlinedemos?view=overview%20target=
Remember, these Small Business routers as used for small business, so really,  if you have more than 100 IP hosts using the LAN, you might be better off looking at a IOS/CLI solution from a Cisco Partner.  These IOS routers can be members of the  integrated servicers routers (ISR) models 2900 or 1900.  These ISR are better for larger routed networks such as yours.
Since you have over 110 users on your network including voice users, maybe you can have a word to your local Cisco partner and then decide regarding which router best suits your needs.

  • Need setup input/opinion please.

Im setting up a new panasonic 50 HDTV and was thinking of getting the new Mac Mini.
I want to be able to go out to the HD TV and play DVDs and also my home mad HD QT files. Also wanted to surf the web.... Is all this possible. Does it just work as if the TV is a monitor.
Also can I connect HDMI for high res? I know the DVD wont be HD but for my QT files I would like to max out the resolution to the TV.
Also can I hook my mini into my Bose sorround sound?
    Thanks for your time.

Yes, you can certainly use your TV as the display for your Mac mini. There are quite a few people, including me, doing the same thing. It's not going to be the best for surfing the Web, but it should work. My Mac mini is connected with an HDMI to DVI cable. DVDs actually look better, for me, this way than playing them on my dedicated DVD player connected with s-video.
What kinds of audio input does your Bose system have? If it has a digital optical audio input, then it should work just fine even for surround sound from your DVDs. (Although, there's another discussion about getting multi-channel audio from QuickTime files directly with no solution yet.)

  • Need opinion regarding table setup on my site

    Hi all,
This is my site I am working on:
    http://www.norbyson.com
First of all, I have a lot of work to do to it - so go easy
    on me!..lol
What I'd like to know is how I should set my table up to
maximize space. I plan to turn the photos into thumbnails along the
margins like the one on the top left corner. I also plan to get rid
of the pop-up photo behavior - I feel it congests the site. That
said, I would like to know how I should set it up so there is
enough room for content - text. The center cells seem a bit narrow
but they should open up once I scale down the images to thumbnails.
I plan to replace the existing map with Google maps. Also, I plan
to replace the navigation area along the left margin with a
navigation bar (using Spry) which will be located below the banner.
Your input on how I should set up the table would be
    appreciated.
    Thanks.

I would check the navigation -- when you click e. g. German version there is no link back to the English version. If you try the Czech version and then click the English version link you will not get back to the .com domain but to the .ch domain.

  • How to setup multiple content servers on one host

    Hi,
We have setup 2 ECC 6.0 systems on one host ECC DEV and ECC QAS. Windows 2003 Server 64bit
We want to setup 2 standalone Content Servers (MaxDB). One contentserver pointing to ECC DEV and one to ECC QAS. Containing its own content.
Problem is that I was not able to set up 2 content servers on one host because in ISS i could only create one default webservice during installation.
To my opinion it must be possible to setup 2 standalone content servers on one host, question is how?
Can anyone help me how to proceed?
    Many Thanks!
    Best regards,
    Jacco Raymakers.

    Hi Jacco
You cannot Configure Two Content Servers on IIS( One Sigle Hardware).
As this Content Server you have configured can be used by both  ECC DEV and ECC QAS.
There is no need of two content servers.Same Contentent server can be used by ECC DEV and ECC QAS.
Configure Content Repository and Content category diferrent for ECC DEV and ECC QAS.
I hope I have answered your query. Please let me know if helpfull.

We are currently in the process of migrating out vmware infrastructure from HP to UCS.  We are utilizing the Virtual Connect Adapters for the project.  With the migration we also plan on implementing the cisco nexus v1000 in our environment.  I have demo equipment setup and have had a chance to install a test environment, but still have a few design questions.
When implementing the new setup, what is a good base setup for the virtual connect adapters with the v1000?  How many Nics should I dedicate?  Right now I run 6 nics per server (2 console, 2 Virtual Machines, and 2 Vmotion).  Is this a setup I should continue with going forward?  The only other thing I am looking to implement is another set of nics for nfs access.  In a previous setup at a different job, we had 10 nics per server (2 console, 4 virtual machines, 2 vmotion and 2 iSCSI).  Is there any kind of standard for this setup?
The reason I am asking is I want to get the most out of my vmware environment as we will be looking to migrate Tier 1 app servers once we get everything up and running.
    Thanks for the help!

    Tim,
Migrating from HP Virtual Connect (VC) -> UCS might change your network design slightly, for the better of course .  Not sure if you're using 1G or 10G VC modules but I'll respond as if you've using 10G modules because this is what UCS will provide. VC modules provide a 10G interface that you can logically chop up into a max of 4 host vNIC interfaces totaling 10G. Though it's handy to divide a single 10G interfaces into virtual NICs for Service Console, VMotion, iSCSI etc, this creates the opportunity for wasted bandwidth.  The logical NICs VC creates provides a max limit of bandwidth to the adapter.  For example if create a 2GB interface for your host to use for vMotion, then 2G of your 10G pipe is wastes when there's no vMotions taking place!
UCS & 1000v offer a different solution in terms of bandwidth utilization by means of QoS.  We feel it's more appropriate to specifiy a "minimum" bandwidth guarantee rather than a hard upper limit - leading to wasted pipe.  Depending on which UCS blade and mezz card option you have, the # of adapters you can present to the Host varies.  B200 blades can support one mezz card (with 2 x 10G interfaces) while the B250 and B440 are full width blades and support 2 Mezz cards.  In terms of Mezz cards now, there's the Intel/Emulex/Qlogic/Broamcom/Cisco VIC options.  In my opinion the M81KR (VIC) is best suited for virtualized environments as you can present up to 56 virtual interfaces to the host, each having various levels of QoS applied.  When you roll the 1000v into the mix you have a lethal combination of adding some of the new QoS features that automatically match traffic types such as Service Console, iSCSI, VMotion etc.  See this thread for a list/explanation of new features coming in the next verison of 1000v due out in a couple weeks https://www.myciscocommunity.com/message/61580#61580
Before you think about design too much, tell us what blades & adapters you're using and we can offer some suggestions for setting them up in the best configuration for your virtual infrastructure.

    Robert

  • New W530 setup questions...

Just received my W530 in the mail and I've been trying to get up to speed on all the new technology out there and how to properly setup my computer... I've tried various searches but haven't got a clear answer I don't think - here goes:
    W530 8gb RAM (2x4), K2000, 500 gb HDD with raid option, x64 win 7, hi res screen
I already bought a Samsung EVO SSD 250GB for the main drive which I will pickup from my US mailbox on Monday.
The reason I bought the computer is because my 4 year old Acer just couldn't handle the intensity of PlanSwift and On-Centre digital estimating programs for construction. In addition I dabble with Chief Architect Premiere for 3D house design and the Adobe Suite to do graphics stuff for the company, etc., etc. I will likely take some CAD related courses at school as well in the future.
My plan was to install OS and programs on the new SSD in the main bay and keep current project files on there. All misc pictures, videos and company files and other things on the HDD which would be in the UltraBay. I currently use about 180 GB and have another 250GB stored on an old laptop which I'd like to transfer over so everything is on one laptop. That one will be for internet searches in the garage for dirtbike repairs
    Questions:
    1. Is it worth getting a 128 GB mSata drive for the OS (under $100 for Crucial)? Then have all program files on SSD in main bay and misc files on HDD in ultrabay? do I need an adapter for the ultrabay or is it already able to accept the HDD in the ultrabay? I haven't popped out the ultrabay yet to see...
    2. I hear of using the mSata drive for Caching? Is 128 GB enough for OS and caching? When is the caching helpful? Should I use the mSata just for caching?
    3. Do I setup the computer with the OS on the HDD in the main bay and then clone/image it to the mSata drive oro SSD drive? Or do I start with the SSD in the main bay? I'm really confused on this part...
    4. If necessary I will upgrade the RAM later - I think this is a straightforward upgrade as long as the voltages with the original RAM are the same - is this correct?
    5. I currently use a Sony KDL 40XBR8 TV as a second monitor at work - what connection should I be using to get the best display settings? I currently use an HDMI with my Acer for no particular reason. I also have an Acer 23" at home which will be replaced with another Sony or Samsung TV when we move into our new house...
sorry for the noob questions... I am typically really good at finding answers to my questions but i really didn't find any clear answers or they were so technical I didn't realize it was the answer to my question ;-)
Can someone give me a practical approach to setting up my computer so I can start off right... thanks!!
    Daniel
    Thanks in advance
    Daniel
ps can't wait to light this thing up with the SSD! It should rip pretty good...
    | W530 | i7-3630QM | 16GB DDR3 | 128GB mSATA | 250GB 840 EVO | 500GB HDD | 1920x1080 | QUADRO K2000M |

Hi Daniel.  When I bought my w530 I immediately installed a 256gb SSD. And now, over a year later I'm looking at getting a 256gb mSata for the boot drive.
    1. The mSata port may only be Sata II but I figure it's not likely that I'll notice the difference.  High transfer rates are really only realized with large files and the OS is usually a large collection of very small files.  But that's just an opinion and your experience may vary.
For an ultrabay adapter, check out newmodeus.  Quite a few forum posts mention success with this adapter versus the cheap ones from eBay.  I haven't bought one yet myself, but this is what I will get when the time comes.  (they also sell an adapter  to convert your optical drive into an external USB optical drive.)
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=400
Also, search the forum and be aware that there are many who report problems of the w530 kicking out the ultrabay drive, but it seems better with the newmodeus adapter (as I recall; it was quite a while back when I read about it).  I haven't looked at what ncix carries for adapters but would be interested to know if you find something that works.
And the drives shipped with the w530 come in different heights, and if it doesn't match the height of your SSD you will need rubber rails.  I still haven't ordered mine and I'm letting my drive sit in the overheight internal bay without proper support.   I just carry it very carefully.  I'm not sure of the best place to get rails, direct from Lenovo or elsewhere.  Last time I checked with Newmodeus they didn't sell just rails, but that may have changed (it was quite a while ago that I checked).
    2. Caching only helps if your OS boot partition is on a traditional harddrive.  With an SSD you won't utilize the caching as it won't be any faster (and may be slower).
    3. I would try installing direct to the mSata/SSD instead of cloning.  For a new system it's probably just as easy and less prone to issues.  Windows will take care of alignment, etc., and turning off features unnecessary for SSD (superfetch/prefetch/and all that).
I also don't believe it necessary to install Win7 fresh.  It depends on your view.  I didn't want the hassle of tracking down a legit copy of Win7 install that I would trust, not to mention the hassle of installing it.  Instead, I made the restore DVD(s) using the Lenovo tools whlie the original harddrive was installed, then switched the drive with the new SDD and restored from the DVDs.  Then I went through and uninstalled any Lenovo software I didn't think was useful.  It's been working nicely ever since and I don't regret not starting with a fresh install.  Your experience may vary, though.
    4. Upgrading ram is very easy.  I'm not sure about specs, but if you don't match voltage and speed the system will downgrade both to the lowest common available.  You should be able to find many discussions about matching RAM voltage on the 'net.  You also would have to wait until your system arrives anyways because you don't know the specs of the RAM in advance (since Lenovo uses different suppliers).
I'm not sure how much RAM you'd need for CAD software.  I upgraded mine to 32gb because I didn't want to find myself wishing I had more (for software development).  I think I only ever hit as high as 20gb used, and am usually around the 6-12gb mark (depends on how many VMs I have going).
    5. Sorry, I can't answer your video question.  I use the docking station with two monitors via DVI.  I haven't tried HDMI.
Before you sell off the extra parts, make sure you don't need them for warranty coverage.  Warranty will only cover the system with original parts, so if you have to send in your system you would remove all custom parts and reinstall the originals.  I'm not sure about onsite service, if you have to revert your system or not to original specs.
All comments I made above were in respect of Win7 Pro.  I have no idea if anything changes under Win8/8.1.
Good luck!  I hope you enjoy your w530 as much as I do mine.

  • Balancing Segment Value assignment to Legal Entity using Account Setup Mgr

    Hello,
    This is on r12.06
By mistake- I did not assign BSV at Legal Entity level, insteady I directly assigned at Ledger level. Now, I am getting following error when running "Accounting Program" standard program
The subledger journal entry contains lines with balancing segment values that are not assigned to any legal entity.  Unassigned balancing segments cannot be used to balance a subledger journal entry with balancing segments already assigned to a legal entity.  Either update the balancing segment value assignments for the ledger ADP/Claims Solutions Group or update the balancing segment values used on the subledger journal entry Upon research, It was discovered that that the Balancing segment is assigned only at ledger level and it is not assigned at Legal Entity level in account setup manager.
When I attempted to assign the BSV at LE level, it is not showing the BSV in list of values.
I even end dated BS at ledger level and tried again but still the concerned BSV is not showing up in LOV at Legal entity level.
Now I am completely stuck. Any idea what am I missing? Why, the new BSV is not showing up at LE level LOV when attempting to assign BSV at LE level?
Thank you for reading this post in advance.
    Regards,
    R

Once a BSV is assigned to the ledger it does not appear in the LOV of BSV-LE assignment field. Pl see if you can delete the BSV from ledger assignment, then only you can re-assign to LE. In my opinion, it allows you to delete the BSV from ledger level if you have not already used it in transactions. In your case, I wonder if it will allow you to delete it. If not, you have to raise SR with Oracle support.
    Thanks

  • Setup-Problem while installing AM Policy Agent 2.1 on Solaris 10

I'm new with AccessManager and try to get it working on Solaris 10 on a Sparc.
    I'm using LDAP-Server, WEB-Server 6.1 and AccessManager from the software-paket: "Sun Java System Access Manager 6 2005Q1" .
While trying to install policy-agents on the Sparc (by starting setup program), I've got the message: "The installer ist intended for Solaris Operating System only".
The agent-software I'm trying to install is "Access Manager Policy Agent 2.1 for Sun Java System Web Server 6.1" From there I choosed "Solaris SPARC 8".
(so I've got the paket "S1WebServer_6[1].1_agent_2.1_sparc-sun-solaris2.8.tar.gz").
In my opinion, it must be correct. Ist there anything i'done wronge?
    thanks, Paul

Even when there is no agent available for Solaris 10 now:
If you don't have any doubt to use an unsupported configuration, at
least the apache agent is installable.
You have to extract the packages "SUNWamapc" and "SUNWcom"
from the tar-archive and install it using pkgadd.
Then, you have to configure it manually ("include" in "httpd.conf",
    "AMAgent.properties").
Maybe, it is possible to do something similiar with the agent for
    SUN webserver.
Be aware that noone will guarantee that such unsupported
    installations won't raise any problems.

  • I want to get my parents setup with an imac and iPad.  They are elderly and we live in different countries.  I want to know what solution exists so I can be the remote administrator to maintain and keep them up and running .. I dont want anything fancy.

I would like to setup my eldery parents with an imac and ipad which I know will greatly help them in their daily life.  The technology they love to play with whenever I visit, but they can never keep anything running or sync'ed unless I am around.  Medical and other issues make this a real challenge for them.  Unfortunately, I live in a different country and see them maybe once per year.  I'm surrounded my apple products but never tried remote administration and wondered what I would need (software and hardware) to make this noble venture sucessful.  Anyone out there has some experience or recommendations?  I'm looking for something that is simple and reliable to implement ...

    JokerGirl,
This is Scott J, I work for Intel and wanted to try and help you out. Sorry to hear about your current PC and your knee!
I agree with the bigger screen. I have the Samsung ATIV Smart PC with a screen 11.6" which is great to watch shows/movies!  anything bigger is almost too big for a tablet (personal opinion).
Yes, most if not all tablets will have speakers and a headphone jack
    You can watch YouTube
Only certain models have keyboards, you will want to specify this when making a purchase. Note: most keyboards are sold separately.
Covers are usually pretty easy to come buy, as well as screen protectors (clear plastic that covers and protects your screen from scratches, etc.)
Depending on the Operating System (Windows, Android, etc.) you will have access to an app store where you can buy and download content. Alternatively you can access your favorite sites to read news, get books, magazines, etc.

  • Redundent mail server setup (backup mail server)

i have been reading all the post of setting up a mackup postfix server. i have looked at the configuration files and have a second machine ready to be implemented but have some questions on how exactly the backup works. my current setup is:
    - xserve1 with 10.4.3 OD master running mail, web, dns, ichat, ftp, host name is mail.mydomain.com
    - xserve2 with 10.4.3 (i will make this replica) running web and backup dns
    - G4 466MHz with 10.4.3 Server running mail and web, host name is mail2.mydomain.com (this is to bemy postfix backup server)
all 3 are behind a firewall with NAT. they have local LAN IPs with NAT to 3 separate WAN IPs and open ports for the needed services.
my first question is: do i need to run dns as well on mail2.mydomain.com?
while i understand that mail stays in the queue on the postfix backup, does that mean that while mail.mydomain.com (primary mail server) is down users will not be getting any mail? can the users actually login to the mail2.mydomain.com and if yes how do they authorize?
should i keep mail2.mydomain.com as a standalone or make it part of the directory?
    any info is appreciated.
    thanks
    martin
    xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

don't mail servers hold mail for days anyway and keep
retrying and when our mail comes back up will get all
    the mail?
Yes, they typically do (unless some braindead administrator has configured his server to try only for a few hours or so).
i assume there is no difference if my
backup mail server runs on 10.3.9 then?
    None whatsoever.
    - is there a practical way to set up a mail that
clinets can login to and check mail while the primary
    server is down?
    Practical? No.
can the backup server forward as well
while it holds to the queue?
Why would you want that? Where should it forward to if the primary is down? As soon as the primary is up, the secondary will forward to i.
the last time i had some
coruption and problems with reconstruct (which you
helped me with), we were down for 24 hours. i am
trying to avoid this. i have an image and i run
mailbfr to backup i assume i can use that in case of
harware failure or massive os corruption that may
    take hours to fix.
If push comes to shove this may help. Although images are never too brilliant for mail services recovery.
my problem is that if this happens
during the week, during daytime we cannot really
afford to be down at that time.
This is really your call. Only you can decide how much money you want/need to throw at resilience. But if you decide you cannot afford more than an hour of downtime, you will need far more than an onsite secondary mx

  • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 encountered an error during setup

(the html editor over here is a pain you know where - not even bold text is working...)
Every time I try to install SP 2013 SP1 on my WS 2012 R2 Update virtual machine the installer dies.
NOTE: I can reproduce this any time. Both the SharePoint 2013 (including SP1) .iso as well as the WS 2012 R2 (including Update) .iso are fresh copies out of the MSDN library.
The installation fails where the installer tries to install the binaries. No configuration wizard yet. I made sure all the prerequisites are there. The PreRequisitesInstaller.exe reboots the virtual machine several times (twice) and then it is all set.

UPDATE: Installing office prior to the sharepoint installation had no effect (solution was suggested  here).
UPDATE: Installing all windows updates (for Windows Server and Office client applications) didn't help either... same error.
UPDATE: I made sure my windows server and sharepoint server images are exactly those you can currently find on MSDN. SHA1 hashes match.

I just did a Server 2012 R2 and SP 2013 w/ SP1 install the other night on Hyper-V running on 8.1 Pro without issues. ISO was from MSDN.
Have you run a crc (or md5, forget what is used) to validate the ISO matches what MSDN says it should be?

  • How to setup a (ui) class in a readable way ?

I'm pretty new to java (and java's OO model) and i can't really think of a nice way to do this :
I'm creating a UI, a JFrame which has a JTabbedPane (with 8 tabs)
and each of these 8 tabs contains either a few listboxes or a pretty complex form (think: 8 textboxes, dragdrop lists, buttons, labels, etc.).
now i know how to code this but tossing it all in a single class will make it HUGE and thus pretty unmaintainable (i'm a pretty 'clean' programmer but still, thousands of lines in a method never looks good).
Does anyone have any tips on how to organise my "ui building" code in multiple classes or interfaces or something else.
When push comes to shove and the application is running the tabs do share some functionality (example: if you choose an item from a list in tab2 then the complex form on tab3 gets filled with the values of that item), so they are not truely separate entities.
I usually have no trouble organising my code in a nice manner but visual/ui code in java doesn't really seem to fit into my way of thinking :)
Any help would be appreciated !

If a panel/tab has about 10 input components (input
boxes, lists, buttons, etc.) and each of them has a
label (pretty common) then you're easily talking
about 25+ swing components (10x component, 10x label,
some additional scrollpanes e.a.). Now imagine the
form with 8 of these tabs , and we're talking about a
few hundred of components.Once again, break them up. Why do all eight tabs have to be in the same class? You could easily define eight different classes that return or are eight different JComponent or JPanel instances and add each as a tab. Making each it's own class might not be appropriate in your case, but the point is they don't need to be in the same class or even the same source file.
A typical Swing component needs about 5 (for a
JButton) to 15 (for a JList in a scrollpane) lines of
code to be initialized and tossed in the
panel/layoutmanager. This means that my hundreds of
components (together) need thousands of lines of
code, just to place them.Where do you see redundancy in your code? Can you extract any of this redundancy to a separate method that can be called once for each component? Why does the initialization even have to be in the same place as the actual placement?
For this reason, im looking for a good way to
separate the UI (The view part of MVC) into
sub-components. Reusability isn't really my concern
at the moment, maintainability and good practise is.
Besides, my skills with swing are too limited at the
moment to be thinking about abstraction/reusability
within the UI anyway.I don't think your knowledge of Swing matters. We're not talking about creating a robust custom table widget. We're talking about something as simple as moving code that creates a JPanel to show an address to another class called "AddressPanel" for example.
I guess the real trouble is with me anyway, i'm
pretty new to java (and swing) and although i really
like the things it CAN do, i don't like the amount of
code it takes to do it (mostly a swing problem i
guess). I'm a big fan of abstraction and interfaces
and all, but the amount of code needed to use simple
components (such as listboxes) and placement on the
form (whole layoutmanagers paradygm) just keeps the
codebase huge and ugly. There were many design decisions made with Swing that I disagree with. For example, it's massive depedency on concrete inheritance and the implications it has, forcing you into concrete inheritance yourself. However, in the end it's pretty powerful and you can use these things as a benefit. For example, separate intialization and layout. They do not need to be in the same place.
Maybe instead of worrying too much how to separate
stuff in the "View" part of MVC), i should be looking
at alternatives to Swing that are more appealing to
my desire of having a clean codebase (maybe SWT or
Buoy is any better? honoustly haven't looked yet) or
maybe i should just ride it out and write a little
wrapper/framework around swing myself (step by
step).I am not aware of any solution out there as robust and consistent as Swing that is supported on all Java platforms. SWT sounds nice, but you rely on Eclipse to continue to support it on your target platforms. Maybe that's acceptable to you, but if it's not you're probably stuck with Swing.
A typical java project of mine is (imo) pretty nicely
setup (overall model, separation of functionality,
codestyle, the use of 3rd party packages etc.) but
has the UI in there as the ugly black sheep ;p (with
either big classes or lots of classes).Refactoring is the best approach in my opinion. Check out Martin Fowler's book "Refactoring" if you're not familiar with what I mean. It doesn't require you to completely rethink your design or make massive changes. You just need to make little improvements, and in the end it adds up to a good solution. At least that's my experience.
I'm just coding java applications for myself (usually
more into non-UI programming) so i have the luxury of
being able to try different approaches without
worrying about a timetable. Best thing to do now is
to think my current model over (compare it to true
MVC and see what's different) and try to implement
the "Command pattern" stuff and see where that gets
me.The hardest part is figuring out how to implement MVC well using Swing. Or at least that's been the most difficult thing for me. I understand MVC. I understand Swing. Combining the two to meet my requirements has been a challenge and I still don't have the answer. After the fifth "re-design" I gave up the notion of figuring it out and decided to just do it and refactor whenever I saw something that smelled. So far it's working out pretty well.
