Have an external hard disk. cannot open on my mac

hi. i have an external hard disk that i used to use with my dell. now that i switched to mac, when i plug it i can see the info, but when i want to add or delete something from the external disk it says cannot be transformed any info, just for reading, so my question is how can disable that and be able to change the info in my external hard disk? thanx in advance for any information in this issue

The drive is obviously formatted as NTFS, which the Mac cannot write to. You'll need to reformat it using Disk Utility, which will erase the contents

    Hi,

One drive is now inaccessible due to sudden power failure while listening Music from that drive few days ago.
Now it shows "Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)".
I tried all the procedures provided here like
    chkdsk /f, diskpart, rescan etc
but no result :( (i mean all processes failed. They could not detect the drive).

  • External Hard disk cannot be detected by my MacBook Pro USB's

    Hi
I have bought an external hard disk 2.5" and even though I have formatted it as FAT 32 still none of my 2 USB ports detect it. It is a hitachi drive 160 GB eSATA. I haven't use power with my external drive.
I ended up sharing it through a toshiba notebook I have for the kids running Windows XP and I transfer files though the Toshiba to the external drive. It's outrageous!!!
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Andreas

    Hi Andreas,
OSX can recognize and use FAT32 partitions without additional help !
Your problem sounds to me as a power consumption problem of the external HD, meaning that the HD does need more power from the USB port than the MacBook Pro can deliver.
Best solution might indeed be to get the external HD on its own power supply.

  • I have Itunes on an external hard disk, now it's not possible to upgrade my Itunes.

I have an external hard disk drive for my Itunes. Until now it's always been possible to upgrade Itunes.
Now I keep getting message E-drive not found. The hard disk is on the F-drive. And I can't find where I need to select the correct drive before installing.
It seems that it's not possible to select the drive where you want to upgrade your Itunes.

For "Invalid Drive" errors when uninstalling or reinstalling try b noir's user tip:

  • External Hard Disk not showing up on Finder

    Hi
My HP Pocket Media Drive (USB), when plugged into my MacBook, does not show up on the Finder, even though it shows up on System Profiler. It only shows up on Disk Utility in certain occasions (such as after shutting down and starting up again). I have checked my Finder preferences, that external hard drives are shown on desktop.
I have tried resetting my PRAM and SMC too, but I still can't access the hard disk.
    Any help will be appreciated.

On the chance that your Mac has a phantom folder in its Volumes folder, with that external drive not mounted, invoke the Finder menu option Go > Go to Folder. Enter "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the field and click "Go". In the resulting window if you see anything with a name that resembles your external drive, trash it.
Anyone know how I can have the external hard disk automatically mount onto my desktop (and thereby bypass the need for several click-thru’s via the finder window)?
Once you're able to mount that external drive, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences and click on the lock in the corner to authenticate if needed. Select your account on the left, then the "Login Items" tab. Drag the mounted disk icon into the window then close System Preferences. That disk should now mount when you log in. A Finder window will open, but you can close that manually. If that bothers you sufficiently, if you search these discussion groups you may be able to find threads that discuss how to work around that.

  • How to back up a external hard disk to time capsule?

I have a external hard disk (WD passport Mac OS extended format)  connected to iMAC (OS X 10.9.3) through USB. How can I back up the hard disk to my time capsule (802.11ac 2TB)?

By default, the name of the hard drive will appear on the list of Excluded items when you open System Preferences / Time Machine  / Options.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it, and then click on the - (minus) button at the bottom of the Exclusions list to remove the drive from the list of items that are Excluded on backups.
Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive on the next pass.

  • Protecting an external hard disk from copying

I have an external hard disk with 120+GB of teaching resources in what may soon become a semi-open access environment. I would like to set up the drive so that a user can view files on it but not copy them onto a CDR or another external drive. Is this possible? I tried setting "permissions", but I could get the effect I was after.
    G4 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It isn't possible. If a user has permission to read files on the volume, the user then has permission to copy and save them to another location.
I'd be more worried about your files getting trashed. External drives are very insecure. Even if you try to enforce permissions on them, as soon as the drive is plugged into a Mac, the user will have full read+write access to all its contents by default. That's the nature of external drives.
So I'd start a comprehensive backup regimen to protect the data on the drive, or try a network storage solution on which permissions can really be enforced.

Click on the Option button and select the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme then click on OK. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32) from the Format drop down menu. Click on the Partition button. Wait for the volume to mount on the Desktop. Select the volume entry (sub-entry of the drive entry) for the volume you just created, click on the Erase tab. • To Upgrade or Not To Upgrade (From External Hard disk to Internal Hard Disk

    Hi, need some advise here.
Currently I have a External Hard Disk (320GB) connect with my IMac with Internal Hard Disk of standard 80GB.It is ok just that have to power on/off the External Hard Disk. It is very common that I forgot to power on the External Hard Disk and my iTune library goes to other location in the Internal Hard Disk instead of follow my setting in my External Hard Disk.
So I am considering remove the standard 80GB in my IMac and change with the 320GB.Read some instruction/procedure on this to me look complicated with the thermal pad thing so now hesitating worth the risk to swap the hard dsik or just leave it as it is.
Leave it as it is or change it?
    Any advice ?

Here's a link to a take-apart guide I used a few times to replace & upgrade drives & memory in my old G4.

No it's not as easy as opening up a pc, but the key word is patience. The key thing to remember is to make sure you get some heatsink paste from your local computer store, and apply it to the areas that need it before buttoning everything back up.
It'll only take you a few hours if you work carefully. While you have it open I highly suggest upgrading your upper memory stick, as well as upgrading your superdrive. I get all my stuff here, they haven't steered me wrong yet:

  • ITunes showing Album Covers of external hard disk i/o internal hard disk

Greetings from Malaysia again. Searched through the Discussion Group, but couldn't find anything there. Thus, hope to get your assistance on this matter.
I have some music stored in the internal hard disk of my G4 iBook. However, recently I decided to have all my music stored in an EXTERNAL hard disk, ie in addition to what's in the iBook, to sync with my iPod. Both have the artwork or album covers. The issue is when I boot up ONLY the iBook, even without the external hard disk on, iTunes (Version 8.1) is showing the Artwork/Album Covers (and list of music) of the EXTERNAL hard disk instead of what's in the iBook. I've even tried the "Option key/Choose Library", but to no avail. I've even tried changing the location, after starting up iTunes in the Preference settings, but still the same story.
Is there any way to have iTunes reflect the correct Artwork/Album Covers (and list of music) when I have the external hard disk connected, as well as otherwise?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards.

Moved the existing library. Created a new one, and moved all the songs to the new library. Subsequently, when using the "Option" key to select the library, it ended up as what I wanted, ie iTunes showing the album covers for the songs/album in the respective library - ie external hard disk, and internal in the notebook.

  • Dismount multiple external hard disk drives

I have multiple external hard disk drives and was wondering what the command line is that will dismount all of these at once? Note that there is also one external DVD unit as well which I would not want to dismount.
    Thanks,
    Lyman

    diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk";diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk";diskutil unmount "/path/to/disk"
Just replace replace "/path/to/disk" with the path to the mount point, leaving the quotes.
    Good luck!

  • Mpd and external hard disk

    here is my problem:
I have a partition on my laptop's hard disk that has multimedia stuff -music, videos, books, etc.  - in ext3
I have a external hard disk with the exact same structure because I ran out space on my partition, and it is in ntfs (because I want it to work with windows)
I don't want to duplicate the data from my hard drive into the external HD - it's 72G -
I don't want to replace my current partition by the external HD because I may not carry the external hard drive all the time
How do I do to my external HD be mounted on my current file system transparently? So that I can use it with mpd without it bothering me?
A dirty fix that I'm pondering is to move my partition mount point to another folder and make some scripts to make soft links int the /mnt/files folder, but I wanted to see if anyone has a better solution

It depends how you connect the external HDD. If it is permanently connected mount the disk thro' fstab on the directory of your music in mpd. or if you want to mount a particular folder only to that music folder use mount --bind from rc.local thro' a script. Normally starting mpd from .xinitrc is good imo instead of starting thro' rc.conf.
