Use a product such as LibreOffice, the iWork applications, or Microsoft Office 2008 or newer to open them.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

Hi - I have an older MacBook Pro (osx 10.4.11. Can I upgrade it so it will run snowleopard?

    All MBPs up to and including the 2011 models can run Snow Leopard.  You will have to purchase a disk from the Apple online store;

    Ciao.

    Yes. Here's the information:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Only you can decide if it's worth doing.

Your MacBook can not be upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion. Snow Leopard is the highest possible for that model.

Your MBP is running in "extended desktop" mode, where the two screens together make one larger area to display windows. You can drag one or more windows from the primary (internal) screen to the secondary (TV) screen. By default, the secondary screen is off to the right of the primary screen.
If you would prefer the two screens show the same image, you want to switch to "mirroring" mode. You will have to pick a single resolution for both screens, which may look poor on one or the other.
Both the relative positions of the two screens in extended desktop mode and the switch to mirroring mode can be set in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate... disconnect display, open lid laptop display will not activate... used to work fine.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button.  Worked fine before Lion update.   Any Advice?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out.  Thanks very much for responding!!!

  • HT201300 i want to buy macbook pro 15 inche ritna display from egypt & i want to know if it was referbushed or not, how can i tell

As you know there is no apple retail store in egypt
all stores who sell apple products are regular stores, they claim to be apple authorized retailers but i know for sure they are definitly not
Because i brought imac from tradeline stores in citystars in egypt a year ago & it was deficted u know techical hardware error from graphics card
and when i gave them my imac 27 inch back to repair it (a white screen appers suddenly)  they made even worse.
however i sold very very cheap to some one i know other than those idiots wh call them selves technitians & now i want to buy macbook pro from some one else other tradeline & i want to know if it was referbushed or not by numbers or letters printed on the box.
    so please advise
    BR

Once, Apple refurbs had serial numbers starting with "R" or "RM." That faded away several years ago so I don't think you can tell from the serial number any more. However, the carton is rather plain and says something like "Apple Refurbished Product" on it
Most of the "mission-critical" Macs at our house are refurbs bought directly from Apple USA. They have all given superb and trouble-free service.

  • HT4567 I have a new iPad 2.  I also have an older Macbook Pro with Mac OS 10.5.8.  When I connect my iPad to my Mac, it says that I cannot use the iPad because I need iTunes v 7.0 or higher.  When I try to update iTunes, it says I have latest version 6.8.

I cannot get my iPad 2 (brand new) to work with my MacBook pro.  It says I need iTunes 7.0, but when I go to  update iTunes on my MAC, it says I have teh latest version 10.6.3.  I have Mac OS 10.5.8 on my MacBook Pro.  Any help would be appreciated.  Do I need to upgrade my OS?  If so, which version?

In order to download iTunes 10.7, which requires OS X 10.6.8, you have to buy OS X 10.6. It's available from the online Apple store, in the US by calling 800-MY-APPLE, or online here.  After OS X 10.6 installation, run Software Update until there are no more updates available, at which point you'll be at OS X 10.6.8 and can install iTunes 10.7.

  • I have an older MacBook Pro using 10.4.11 and want to use new operating system to use the latest iLife. Can i install 10.7 on an external hard drive and use the external hard drive to run new system while leaving my old system intact?

I want to use a new version of iLife (for iMovie and iDVD) but am currently running OS 10.4.11, which won't work with the newer iLife programs. Can i install OS 10.6.3 or 10.7 on an external hard drive, boot to that hard drive and work with the new software (installed on the external hard drive) using my MacBook Pro  (circa 2005/6) as the engine while leaving my laptop running 104.11 the rest of the time?

Yes, you can use an external drive. To upgrade, however, means:
Purchase Snow Leopard DVD then update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8.
Access the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion.
Your computer must meet system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Obviously, you do not have to upgrade to Lion but can stop at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which is sufficient for the current versions of iLife apps. Note that iDVD is no longer part of the newest version of iLife. Lion 10.7.2 or later is needed should you wish to use iCloud.

  • Older MacBook Pro (10.7.5) won't update any software

Here's everything that's been stuck in Software Update for a while:
    iPhoto Update - 9.4.3
    Java for OS X 2013-004 - 1.0
    iMovie Update - 9.0.9
Digital Camera RAW Compatability Update - 4.07
    Security Update 2013-002 - 1.0
    Airport Utility - 6.3
    Safari - 6.0.5
    iTunes - 11.0.4
If I try to update, all or individually, it'll proceed as normal, sometimes even ask for the restart, but even if it gets to the end of the cycle, a warning message pops up saying none of the items can be installed.
Now, when I say it won't update anything, I mean "anything." I'm running Lion (10.7.5), but Lion disappeared from my list of purchases in the Mac App Store, which I did purchase even though it says I didn't. I've tried rebooting to reinstall it that way because it still shows Lion there, and I even called Tech Support, but they couldn't figure out why it disappeared. I just recently came to the conclusion that nothing updating and Lion not being able to be reinstalled, are likely related.
Anyone have any idea why it won't do any software updates?
P.S. - My model (Titanium) cannot support Mountain Lion.

Ok then, we can rule out the "not enough space" scenario.  Try repairing permissions and restarting your computer afterwards.  If that does not work, set up a new account and try using Software Update.  If that work, we can then rule out system wide problem.

  • How do I sync my icloud calendar between iPhone 5 and macbook pro without a 1 hour difference? I've made sure that the time zones are the same on all devices and it's still doing it.

I cannot get my iphone 5 and macbook pro to display the same time on my calendar. There is a one hour  difference between them and it is driving me crazy!! Please help!!!

Did you also confirm that the time zone was set correctly on icloud.com (click on your name, check Time Zone)?

  • Because of the new final cut pro x update with photoshop capability, does that mean 3d objects are now compatible with final cut pro x

Does Final Cut Pro X now support 3d models or objects because of the update with photshop capability?

When you import a 3D model in Photoshop, it is imported as a Layer (smart object). And, yes, you can edit 3D objects in Photoshop and import them into FCPX—AS a photohop image (you cannot manipulate the 3D nature of the object in FCPX.) You can however create an animation in PS, convert to layers from frames and import that into fcpx. You can then edit the compound clip created to make use of those "animated" layer/frames. (I'm not sure how far I'd "push it" though...fwiw, at that point, it might be better to export the animation from PS and import the MOV into FCPX.)
You can also make edits in PS after the psd is imported and fcpx will do live updates (after saving the psd file, of course.) 3D objects in PS are a special kind of Smart Object, and Smart Objects will translate to Motion and FCPX (they will be rasterized as a single layer, though.)
