Have existing wireless broadband router. Installing TC, shall I continue to use my router as before ?

Up to you.. the easiest setup is to bridge the TC and plug it into the existing router.. setup wireless in the TC to either act as a new network or complement the existing one.

  • Correct settings for wireless broadband service

Ok, I’m about to lose my mind over trying to get my wireless broadband connection working correctly.
I had the wireless broadband antenna installed on my garage. I mounted AEBS in my garage and connected it to the cable from the wireless broadband antenna. I can access the internet with no problems, but I have questions about the proper settings. (I’m having printing issues that I didn’t have with my phone line connected to the AEBS and I just want to start from scratch and try to understand how this should all be connected.)
    Here are my questions:
    1)     What settings should I be using on the AEBS for wireless broadband and which port on the AEBS should be used?
    2)     Why is it that when I look at the status indicators in the Network settings control panel, it only will show yellow and never green?
    3)     I have a second AEBS in the house, what is the best method to connect that one to the one in the garage?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. After I make sure this equipment is working OK, then I’ll tackle the printing issue.

    Thanks for the response…
    1)     I had to turn off DHCP on the AEBS in order for it to work. They supply an IP address. (If you can’t tell, I don’t know a lot about what I’m talking about…)
    2)     I now have two AEBS and an Airport Express. I purchased another AEBS this weekend trying to solve the printer problem. I think your comment is related to my green status light that I mentioned. Actually what I was referring to is if you look at the system preferences in on the Mac and show the Network Status, it shows a red dot for anything that is not working and when I’m at work connected to the network, it shows a green dot if everything is working ok. At home with the Wireless Broadband, I get a yellow dot which is kind of telling me that the connection is somewhat working.
    3)     I currently have the two AEBS connected by using WDS and I don’t plan to connect the AE until I make sure everything is working correctly and I can print again.
I assume I should be using the WAN port on the AEBS to connect the broadband. I’m not sure why I can’t use DHCP.
    Thanks again

  • I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express.
I am using a DLink DI-524 Router, Windows 7 (64), and the AirPort Express.
AirPort Utility will not recognize the AEX wirelessly, it will only recognize it when it is connected by Ethernet. I can then configure the AEX and verify that the settings stick once disconnected and then reconnected. However, even after that, it will not recognize the AEX once disconnected from the Ethernet cable.
I followed the suggestions of several other threads on these forums. But I am unable to get the AEX to work.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
It's almost always a security setting that causes problems when the Airport Express (AX) tries to join a third party wireless network. The AX usually does not "join" correctly and that's why you can't see it on your wireless network using AirPort Utility.
Using an ethernet cable is still the more reliable way to configure and adjust the AX, but if you are want to try to configure it using wireless, you must return the AX back to factory defaults as follows:
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
When it is set to factory defaults, the AX broadcasts a wireless signal with a network name like "apple network xxxxxx" where the "x's" are either letters or numbers. You must look for this network by clicking on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen. If you don't see this network, then click Join Other Network to search that way. Unless you connect to this network, you will not be able to configure the AX using wireless.
Do you know the exact security type that your D-Link router is using? That is the key element in the process.
Open AirPort utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to establish a name for the AX, device password and adjust time zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...must exactly match your D-Link wireless network name
Enable ethernet clients if you want the port to be active (your D-Link must be compatible with ProxySTA for this to work)
Wireless Security...exact setting of the D-Link network. WEP security causes a lot of issues. Try to use WPA/WPA2 Personal, which is far more secure.
Wireless Password...must match the D-Link network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
    Click Update to save settings
    Any luck?

  • HT1515 I want to extend my existing wireless router upstairs to my new smart TV.  I have loaded the AirPort Express onto my desktop Mac.  In simple terms do I now just plug the AirPort into a socket halfway between the base WiFi and the Smart TV, or do I

I want to extend my existing wireless router by using the AirPort Express for my Smart TV.  Can I just plug in the AirPort halfway between the router and the Smart TV and have no direct connection to a computer or the TV, or do I need to plug in next to the TV and somehow connect the AirPort to the TV (ethernet)?

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • Do you have to set up AE inBridge mode with existing wireless modem router?

    Hi
I've just bought the AE and Apple TV. My plan was to basically use my existing Netgear wireless modem router for the internet only and set up the AE as the wireless router. I also bought the AE to boost the strength, print wirelessly and I thought it might work better with the Apple TV. The other things I use on my home network are ipad, iphone 4, HP DV6 Notebook, Toshiba Notebook and PS3.
I've plugged the Netgear into the AE with an Ethernet cable. I initially started with the "replace existing access point with AE", as I thought I was replacing the Netgear with the AE. This option left me with internet working and a blinking amber light on the AE.
I then did a hard reset and started again. I diabled the wireless on my old modem/router and chose the "create wireless network" option in airport utility. I think it worked because I have internet and a green light but to be honest I have no idea what I did. I know it's in bridge mode but only because I didn't know how to set up the other options.
Also, I've ended up with three networks out of this process. The default network for the AE (but it has one of those yellow error icons next to it in the available network list), the one I set up and a 5ghz of the one I set up. Neither the default network of the 5ghz network show up in the Internet and Networking control panel, which is where I delete them. I just thought this was odd.
    What I'd like to know:
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing. I'm basically just clicking stuff and seeing if it works.
    Any help/advice is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Jo

Hello Jo Sugden. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
You don't have to but, most likely, it will be the best configuration choice when you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected to your main Internet router by Ethernet. In this configuration, all NAT & DHCP services will continue to be provided by the Netgear router. This will allow all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBSn to get their IP address (and be on the same subnet) from the Netgear ... and this would allow clients connected to either router to "see" each other.
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If, for some reason, you wanted to create a separate subnet, configuring the AEBSn as a router would allow for this.
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
By default, your AEBSn will create two wireless networks with the same Network Name; one broadcasting in the 5 GHz band, and the other in the 2.4 GHz band. The default name for both of these will be Apple Network NNNNNN. You have the option, within the AirPort Utility, to change the names of each network.
When connected by Ethernet, and in bridge mode, it would be beneficial to name your AEBSn's networks the same as that provided by the Netgear. This would create what is called a "roaming" network ... where you literally can roam with a laptop from one router to the other and still be on the "same" network. This also is a way to extend the wireless range of the Netgear.
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
As a minimum, you will have three wireless networks: one provided by the Netgear and two provided by the AEBSn. By giving them all the same Network Name, they will appear as one to any wireless client. However, they will all show up in a utility like iStumbler or AirRadar.
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
Yes. Operating a wireless network in the 802.11n Radio Mode in the 5 GHz Radio Band offers the best potential bandwidth ... around 300+ Mbps. The only real drawback of the higher frequency band is that the signal strength drops off more rapidly with distance than in the lower frequency band. Also higher frequencies cannot penetrate objects (like walls) as well.
Ideally, you would want to place your Apple TV or other streaming devices in the same room as the 5 GHz network ... or connect them to the router by Ethernet.

  • Can I use a airport express to get internet connection to a Mac Mini that doesn't have wireless by adding it to my existing wireless network?

I bought a first gen Mac Mini for our daughter and it doesn't have internal airport adapter and was wondering if I got a airport express can I plug it in my daughters room and use it as a local router and just use the eithernet connect from it.  Or would a airport extreme work better for this job.  I have a wireless cable modem that we connect to.  I also have a second question I have a iMac G4 that picks up the wireless signal but will not connect to it does it have to be a Apple airport for it to work or should it be able to connect to any broadcasted signal.  Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you wish to use the AEX to provide a wireless connection for a device that has an Ethernet port but no wireless capability of its own? You wish to use it in place of a wireless card that isn't internally installed? If so, the answer is, "Yes." It will work as a wireless access point. But you must have an extant wireless network because the AEX won't have an Internet connection when used in this way.
If you have an existing wireless network with a wireless router connected to your cable/DSL model or your modem is a wireless router as well, then the AEX may connect to it in bridge mode. Note that AEXs don't always play nice with non-Apple routers. Some work; others don't.

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

  • WRT54G ver 6 wireless broadband router throughput

I have a DSL 6 Mb service and the service company (ATT) is reading an incoming speed to their modem of 7Mb but when I connect my PC wireless to the router and run a speedtest I get only 2.7 Mb. at the PC. This is quite disturbing because I get longer times downloading files and I'm paying for 6 Mb.  I'm surprise to see no one has posted anything about speed of service.
I contacted Linksys tech help and they have no clue. I asked for the information that the engineers must have of the broadband degradation to be expected at the output of these units if any. They have no idea either. I can't believe that a company that makes wirelss units has not performed tests in their labs to see what bandwidth degradation the unit creates if any and then publish this information. Its like buying a car where the manufacturer does not know the HP of the engine or how much load it can carry.
If anyone can help me with this I certainly would appreciate it. If degrading the broadband tomore than 50% is normal so be it. I will have to buy another brand or connect hardwired to the service. But if this is the case they should DEFINITELY provide this information before selling these units. By the way this is with only one lap top (Dell Inspiron) at les than 1 foot away. If you connect more than one I assume the Broadband would come to its knees.
If anyone has DSL or Cable and wants to check if they are getting the band they are paying for go to SPEEDTEST.NET and click on run a test and you will get your actual speed for your downloads and uploads. You may be very surprised at what you are getting. Its a neat site and keeps your data and as you continue testing it will give you a graph of all your test and results.
    Thanks

Most wireless users are able to get 50% to 70% of their wired router speed.  A few have reported as much as 80% to 90% of their wired router speed.  So first of all, test the wired speed through the router.  It should be 6 Mbps, or very close to it.
Your wireless speed depends a lot on how good of a wireless connection you have to the router.  A good connection is both strong AND clean.  By clean, I mean that there is no significant other wireless signal that is interfering with it.  Note that having "5 bars" only indicates a strong signal, not whether or not it is clean.  For example, if your neighbor is using the same wireless channel, you could be getting a lot of interference from his signal.
Often, getting a good wireless connection is a matter of optimizing several different parameters:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
In the router, be sure to turn off optional services like logging.  Logging should only be turned on for diagnostic purposes, not during normal day to day use of the router, because logging will slow the router.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Configuring a new Airport Extreme with an existing Wireless Modem Router

I have an existing Wireless Modem Router (brand: Riger) and have an existing wireless network. Recently purchased an AirPort.
What is the best way to install a new AirPort Extreme? I know i have to connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem via ethernet cable.
Do i allow the AirPort to use the existing setting from my old wireless modem router?
Or do i create a new network with different name and password?
Anybody can help or show me where i can look up on this?
    Thanks

Hello akramaziz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will be connected to the existing Wireless Modem Router by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
As a bridge, the AEBSn will allow the existing router to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients.
