HD on normal 4.7 DVD's

Can I author HD or HDV material onto a standard 4.7GB DVD with Encore 3.0? (This is out of curiosity) Would that DVD be playable on normal DVD players, and still play on HD DVD players? If the TV was not HD but the DVD disc was, would it then play fine in a SD setup?
I have asked this on the Premiere Forum, but what would you benefit from the H.264 codec?
Thanks

In theory yes. The player just needs to be "aware" of the DVD in its firmware so it knows how to move its optics and the laser needs to be powerful enough to handle the thicker layers of a burned DVD. It is unlikely that it will happen this way, though. Most combo players will use a dedicated legacy red DVD laser either routed thru the BD optics or with a separate lens and carrier. The main reason is the low energy yield of the blue lasers and their difficulty in producing them. More than anything else this is a problem of manufacturing cost.
>You say it's more of a difference between the actual way data is >stored on a BR disk compared to HD DVD's?
Certain clusters in any disc format are used for identification of the disc itself to differentiate CDs from DVD-R and those again from DVD-RAM and BD. It's the same thing like when your burning program tells you you cannot burn DVD content to a CD (in addition to checking file sizes) Some players will use this info and not play discs even if the data contained on this disc is correctly formatted. This is to prevent damage in the player. However, these days most players will simply scan for a given directory structure or files and play them according to their firmware and chipset, regardless whether it's DVD (video), DivX, XviD or some day even BD.

  • Is it normal for a dvd - rom to be detected as a cd - rom ? ( Note:problem since new 2005)

intermittant ahum.... so after a time i upgraded the cd-rom-rw to a dvd-rom-rw to solve the problem. once all was well i swaped locations of the 2 dvd-rom so the writer is at the top. always things work when first discoverd. but after some time not so much. since then..... i have also upgraded OS to windows 7 from xp sp2/3  . worked just as desribed above. been through the mill with the fixit and manualy upper/lower, enable -disable ... only thing i can think of is licenseing that pops into action stopping use. and i'm not doing any illegal downloads or copy protect etc..  i just watched matrix on dvd 2 piece movie and when switching to disc 2 it would not continue. what happens ?

    Hi,
I don't think that the laptop is powerful enough to handle blu-ray disks. I have checked the specs for a dv6910us and there is a D2C AMD 2GHz cpu and nVidia 7150M which is a very poor config for playing BR disks. Blu-Ray players are supported on Intel based full featured dv6700 series laptops which might suggest that it would be the same on dv6900 series laptops.

    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with

I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS

I understand that you are having an issue with your battery and the lightscribe drive. You would also like to know about DL(Dual Layer) support.
Here is a link to  Troubleshooting the notebook battery to assist with the battery concern.
You asked what dual layer support is , here is a definition from webopedia for the explanation.
    What is dual layer support
As you stated in your post your system supports  reading
The DL refers to dual layer, it does not list a CD DL.  What type of disk are you using?
From your post I noticed it does read the title of the disk but is unable to read the file.
Did you use any form of compression software  when writing the files?
Would you try inserting a  supported blank disk and writing to it.  If you can do this and read the disk after your drive is functioning.
The only other way to check would be to remove and reinstall it  into another computer to test if it works there.
Yes there is a bios update listed on the driver page for your notebook.

Updating the bios does have a potential to cause damage, for this reason I suggest contacting HP support for assistance.

    Thanks a lot,
I wish that Paul_Tikkanen could have participated in solving this issue since I know he has insight in such problems.
Could you please be a little bit patient with me and go through all my points below and answer me::
IF you had  had a close look at my screen shots before, you would have seeing I have classified the disc haveing and not having the problem  into three categories each of which has its screen shots under it.
Blank Or Used(containg data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe is unable to be  read by optical drive
Not Blank(containing data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON -Lightscirbe disc opens normal
    Blank CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON-lightscirbe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD)::
First The kind of discs I have been used to using, and seeing in the market are only:
    CD-R, C-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
    However, I never ever used or saw 'CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM CD-R DL, CD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-RW DL, CD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+RW DL.
Thus, Could you please be a little more detailed about each of the above disc types?
Second: I don't know if I can see 'DVD+R DL' written on the cover of DVD like what I am accustomed to see 'DVD-R'?
Third: What difference is there between 'DVD-RW', and 'DVD-RW DL', and 'DVD-R' and 'DVD-R DL'?

NOTE, those discs are for HP Factory Recovery Discs.I have created those Discs via HP Recovery Manager.  After creating them, I have labelled them with lightscribe software. ALL LightScribe are not read well and are unknown. Thus, my answer for your question is No, I don't use compression software unless if the program 'HP Recovery Manager' used a compression built-in tool while creating those discs'
Moreover, I have even restored my laptop from the HP factory Recovery discs which means everything must have been OK

Have you seen my screen shots well?
The key of my problem as to unable to reading LightScribe is the answer of this question of mine: Why do I see 'RAW' or 'unknown' as a file system for disc inserted whenever I insert a ligthSribe disc into drive?
All Blank Or containing data CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe are unable to be  read by optical drive. When clicking on drive 'duble-click', I found it opens  like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player, however, 'with CD/DVD Player' is grayed out) When I chose 'like a USB FlashDrive, I found there was no disc inserted, although it was.
If you mean other discs not LightScribe, then I would be saying YES. And they all worked well, except the lightscribe(Blank, or containing data) were not read well at all.(all are unknown).

You mean I need to remove the optical drive and install on another laptop brand. If so, It would be compatible with any laptop brand?
NOTE: the reason around this problem is not lightscribe discs(I think) since any optical drive without having a lightscribe feature can read lightscribe discs. For instance the Dell laptop(Windows 7) could read all lightscribe disc or non lightscribe discs, even although it doesn't have any lightscribe feature, nor a disc recording software, except the Windows built-in default  tools. Dell optical drive, although not having a lightscribe feature, read all discs no matter the disc type is. Thus, In my HP optical drive having a lightscribe feature, I have decided to get rid of (lightscribe feature by removing the lightscribe system software, and all Cyber DVD-Suite). However, the problem is still with reading lightscribe discs.

    Updating the BIOS
First:: I have updated my BIOS from F.05 into F.1B by using HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) (sp55068) F.1B hoping to get rid of this problem, but that made no difference at all.
    NOTE
Other suggested that I insert an empty rewritable CD and try running the following command: format e: /fs:UDF
I did, but it didn't help.
Other suggested to download the latest version LightSribe system software, but I would be saying how to do that as long as HP would be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology.
Second:: I've also been searching in HP forums, but always they said nonsense comments which I don't put up with. Take this one for example,
I'd be happy to do all I can to help with your lightscribe. Please note:Beginning May 2011 and throughout the year, HP will be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology. While this transition may affect other HP products, this document is specific to HP notebooks.- Source

NOTE:Hewlett-Packard's LightScribe website is no longer active. LightScribe software and disc utilities
may be found on a number of public websites. Search the Internet for LightScribeto find these pages.
This blurb and much more information can be found in the following document; Creating Disc Labels with LightScribe
    The compelet discussion is here.
Finally I would be saying that LightScribe website is no longer available(discontinued). As HP said. IF HP customer care couldn't help their customers, I think it would be better to completely discontinue selling HP products.

primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and
then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOTrecognised/Installed on
BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files
at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS.  However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then
clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that
made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto thesecondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same
primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS.

If you had had a look again at my first post, you would have seen that I said that I have done some things, among of which is: I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software
which came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
Yes, you're right the two threads below are concerned about one issue.

However, this thread contains more precise details and screen shots about the problem. I was not able to understand whether all lightscribs were not unable to be read or not. However, I now recognized that, and I recognized that only all LightScribe(empty
or used) discs are unable to be read. furthermore, that other thread got far too longer to be followed.
Moreover, I would like you to take some time out to answer my problem about Lighstscribe discs since I am going to purchase 'A battery, Cooling Fan' From the HP agent in Yemen, which is far away from me about 1000 Km. Thus, If my optical disc drive was corrupted
as well, then I would be requesting the 'optical disc  drive' as well from the HP along with 'Battery, Cooling Fan' .

  • Blank DVDs and CD-Rs No Longer Appear

Since installing the latest security update for 10.3.9 on my 1.8 Dual Processor PowerMac (yes, I repaired permissions immediately before and after installing the update) blank recordable media no longer appear in Finder or on the Desktop. I am able to use iTunes and apps with the ability to burn to record some things and the discs behave normally, but I can no longer insert a blank disc and copy folders or files to it to burn because it does not appear anywhere on the system. Named blank discs do not come up when I use Search either. These are the same batch of discs I have been using for months with 100% success (Imation brand of DVD-R and +Rs), and like I said, they work fine through certain apps that have a burn function. Seems like a Finder issue to me. Any thoughts?
When I insert a blank it get this error in Console:
Apr 25 11:35:57 ####-####-Computer kernel: disk4: media is not formatted.
My optical drive is a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A
Here is a list of what I have done in an attempt to resolve the issue:
    -repaired permissions
-in System Preferences set the action to open Finder when blank discs are inserted (tried changing settings and restarting)
-used Onyx to clean system and app caches
-put machine to sleep and woke it (read somewhere this might do it)
    -trashed the finder.plist file
-used Panther install disc to verify and repair the Volume (says all's good)
-downloaded the update again and reinstalled
My three external firewire drives all show up as usual, and USB CF cards mount normally. Recorded DVDs and CD-Rs appear normally.
In Disk Utility I see the disc icon with the name of the optical drive when there is a blank disc in the drive, but it says under Total Capacity: 0Bytes, and under Write Ability: Read Only (CD-R).
Any thoughts or ideas on what I could try will be greatly appreciated! I really need to burn some backups!
    Thanks very much,

  • DVD Player crashes after drive change

    Hi everyone,
For the last 6 months or so, I've had my ThinkPad T23's Combo drive installed in my Pismo. It's a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-RW that came with the ThinkPad originally, but has recently failed. I took the drive out and reinstalled the Pismo's original DVD-ROM drive, but the result has been that DVD Player now fails to load up when I put in a DVD Movie. Specifically, the player tries to load up, but stops, crashes and closes. I had to use PatchBurn to install the 720, but all related files have now been removed. Incidentally, I had the same trouble with the Combo when I first installed it, remedied by using PatchBurn 4. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
I have no specific fix but here are a few suggestions:
    - If you have an external monitor connected, remove it and test DVD Player.
    - Are you sure the DVD-side of the OEM DVD-ROM drive is sound? These drives are known to fail in various ways. Check its health by booting your Tiger DVD.
    - Make sure you have performed routine maintenance by flushing all the caches; the caches have occasionally caused problems on the Pismo with proper operation of the optical drive.
    - If no success at this point, it is recommended you download to your desktop the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC). Installing the Combo on top of your existing 10.4.8 will often solve various software issues; this Combo also includes the DVD Player.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
I install system updates in a very conservative manner: Run Repair Disk Permissions if you have not done so recently plus Verify Disk; if 'Verify' in First Aid fails, boot to your Tiger DVD and make repairs. A Safe Boot will also make most directory repairs but not all.
Once the HD is healthy, I restart with a Safe Boot/Safe Mode and run the Combo installer. Restart normally and test DVD Player.

  • DVD drive doesnt read DVD-R discs on Mac G4/350 AGP?

    Hi,
I noticed that my DVD-ROM drive can read a DVD+R and CD-R disc just fine, but when I stick in a DVD-R disc, it just ejects it. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.
Is this normal that the DVD-ROM drive can only read in DVD+R discs? The Apple Spec page doesnt say much about this.
    Andrew

    Hi-
Try downloading and installing the Patchburn Utility. It might help your media reading. I assume this is a disk that someone burned? Could be your drive doesn't like the media, itself, or the burn speed was too high for your 5x DVD=ROM to read.
If Patchburn doesn't help, may be time to move up to a more modern drive to replace your antique.....
There is a real nice,Pioneer DVR-112 replacement you might consider.

  • CD/DVD dropped after Hyper-V role installed

    Hi,
yesterday I installed server 2012 from the scratch (quite normally from a DVD). All went OK and CD/DVD drive was present after OS restart. Today I installed Hyper-V role on same machine. After reboot DVD drive was vanished from Windows Explorer. It didn't
show in the Device manager either. I checked registry HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\atapi from SRV2012 and SRV2008R2 machines just to compare them.
It appears that there is one more line (key) in the Hyper-V machine (running srv2012) registry: the"Owners" key, which is missing in the srv2008 machine not running Hyper-V. I don't have a clue what that means and if that has anything to do with
    the issue.
So, my question is: Where has my dvd drive gone after Hyper-V role installation and how can I get it back?
Can anyone show me the path forward with this problem?
    Jussi

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 Burning cd-rom, not dvd for playback on TV

    Hi there.
I completed an HD project in FCP 7, compressed in "Compressor" and now want to burn a DVD in HD in DVD Studio Pro 4.
I went into "Preferences" and made what I believe are all of the necessary changes to make this happen.
However, when it burns, it won't burn a DVD for playback in a DVD player. In fact, one of my DVD players identifies it as a CD-ROm, and sure enough, it plays in the computer, but not in a DVD player.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kevin

HD DVD is a dead format, abandoned by its developers a few years ago after losing out to Blu-ray.
However, HD DVDs will play on later model Macs and a couple of (now obsolete) models of HD DVD players that were made by Toshiba.
Normal, set-top DVD players and Windows DVD player programs have never been able to play HD DVDs. They only play DVDs, which are standard definition only. Some DVD players will upscale the output of a DVD (again, standard definition) to HD dimensions for playback on HDTVs. Some actually do a pretty good job ... some don't. But the fact remains that the source being played can only be standard definition.
So, if you want to make a disc that will contain HD content, you'll need to make a Blu-ray disc. If you want to make a DVD that will play in DVD players, you'll need to make a DVD, which again, can only be standard definition.

  • DVD Dual Layer Not Working?

    Hi all!
This is my first time to these forums and I have some trouble with a used Toshiba x205-SLI1 I just bought. the HD Dual Layer burning does not function and the driver appears to be updated properly. It is a TS L802a model, with drivers dated as of 6/21/2006 version # 6.0.6002.18005.
When I insert the Memorex HD +R Media Nero 9 runs up and begins the process but only goes to about 1% then stops. It ejects the DVD which apears to have nothing written to it by looks since I can put the DVD back in and there are no written areas all i can see with data.
Plus the speed of the drive only reaches 2.4 when the max is 8X.
Is there a newer driver somewhere? I need to get this working if possible and without spending tons of money on different media types to "test" the Burner.
Does this burner have some inate problems as i have read on other forums in burning dual layer dvd's?
oh, and it does work with the normal 4.7GB DVD's just fine i have done several of these to back up data on the system.
The system is running as the following drive configuration:
2 @ 200GB Raid 0. Vista ultimate 64 upgraded from Home Premium by the original owner.
The Laptop works in everything else and is in pristine condition all over.
Let me know if more info is needed to make a determination for help please.
    Thanks in advance!

It sounds like a hardware problem to me.  Your best bet considering it is new is to take it back to the place of purchase and exchange it for a working model (if it's within the exchange period) or contact Toshiba Support and have it repaired under warranty.  Se the Warranty Link at the top of this page for details.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Too big to fit DVD -what to do now?

I've made a 2hr 20 min movie in iMovie which I want to burn to a DVD, but iMovie tells me it's too big.
I've already done all the menus and so on in iDVD, and if I click on the "Info" tab (after clicking on the "Customize" button in iDVD's main window it says:
    DVD capacity: 9.4GB og 8.0GB
I noticed that if I go to the preference menu and choose "Best performance" under "Encoder settings" it becomes a lot bigger (18.9GB), so I've set it to "Best quality". What does that mean anyway?
The movie I made was originally shot on a VHS tape, so although quality is good for it naturally doesn't compare to DVD quality (I imported it through my Mini-DV camcorder which Vidi (http://www.mitzpettel.com/software/vidi.php) was used to capture -iMovie apparently can't capture anything which isn't on DV tape).
I assume I'm really wasting a lot of additional space on the DVD for the added quality which the movie doesn't take advantage of, so is there a way I can make space on a DVD without sacrificing quality (or at least not too much)?
It would be really nice to put it all on one DVD (my PowerMac G4 has a dual layer Superdrive, though I've never actually tried burning anything other than "normal" 4.7GB DVDs with it).
Alternatively, how do I go about splitting my video into several parts so that it will fit on several DVDs?
    Message was edited by: osmanthus

Just a suggestion for splitting your project ... (will require major memory 'til you split it)
I would think your project is saved and named? Copy and put it in another folder, then chop the other, delete first half, SAVE AS a different name BEFORE you Empty the Trash. I hit Save again and close.
Open the original again and chop the last half .... I used to overlap the second half 2-3 minutes ... a sort of reminder of the "last episode". Save as the different name ... Part 2 or something!! Then empty trash .... Save BEFORE emptying cuz my iDVD anyways, just Dumps and Saves, I have No choice!! You don't want to destroy the COMPLETE Project just yet. So SAVE,SAVE,SAVE Before you empty the trash!!!!
So now you should have 3 projects .... 1 complete, 1 first half & 1 second half (see major memory temporarily used) Then I test burning the first half to a ReWritable DVD ... (I wasted sooo many discs with this bloody program.) If it says it's Successful .... TEST that disc in a DVD player, 2 different ones if you have them ... Do this BEFORE you touch the computer, It should be asking to burn more or are you Done! If it works in the player then I go on, I put a Write only dvd in the disc tray and close it ... it should take over and burn another and 2,3 4 more whatever.
I then Erase the DVD-RW and repeat this circus with Part 2 onto the RW, test in dvd player then burn permanent discs.
ONLY after I know Part1 & Part 2 (in iMovie or iDVD) can stand alone, do I trash the Complete Mega Gb project to free up some space.
(I have to look for another DVD Burning program, this iMovie & iDVD I find too clumsy, restrictive and tooooo hungry for memory ... for what you get!)

  • I made two picture cds with dvd r and computer says incompatible. cyberlink to go was used

I have a HP Pavillon 6gbyt desk top computer, I used Cyberlink to Go to make two picture Cd's using a DVD+R disc. I got it to work fine, but after it would not play the cd on the computer or the tv dvd player saying it's incompatible. I was able to use a portable DVD player but it kept formatting each picture. I  made these for grandchildren, so am anxious to figure out what is the problem.  It said it was writing and burning fine, but won't play. Please help.

    Hi,
Please let me understand what are you trying to do: Do you want to make a slideshow DVD of many photos for your grand children. The DVD can play on ANY DVD player ? Is that right.
If YES, you need to tell CyberLink to use video format to burn. I normally use Windows DVD maker, much easier and it can't be wrong.

  • Has anyone gotten an official fix from EPSON for printing on CD/DVD's?

To re-iterate the problem, I am unable to normally print CD/DVD's with my EPSON R220 printer after installing Leopard.
    I get the following message:
"The EPSON printer driver dealing with CD printing is not installed"
After hitting OK, you get brought to (what I call) the EPSON CD Print window which lets you edit Color Correction and Print Position but the "Print" button is grayed out.
I can use the workaround I found in these discussions (thank you by the way) by hitting "Manual Print" from this window and select A4 for paper size and I'm able to print using the CD tray as normal.
But has anyone heard back from EPSON with an official fix?
    Thank you.

I spoke to EPSON support via the phone today.
They said that the "Manual Print" option button is available due to the Easy Print software they released early November. This is their workaround and they said they are working on a real solution but it's just not available yet.

  • What Handbrake setting to use to convert DVD to play both Appletv & ipod???

When I convert a DVD using the Apple Tv setting it doesn't play on my ipod. What setting should I use on Handbrake to play on both? Does it matter as far as quality of play?

    It definately matters.
iPod High Rez is limited to 640 horisontal resolution, normal wide screen DVD's are often up to 1024 pixels horisontal resolution, so you are throwing away a lot of quality by using the iPod preset.
I convert all movies using the AppleTV preset, then make copies for my iPhone using the iPhone/iPod Touch preset (a bit higher resolution than iPod low res).
Sure it takes up more HD space, but USB2 harddrives are cheap these days and I want the best possible quality on my AppleTV and the smallest filesize on my iPhone.
Even HD TV-shows from Apple come in 2 versions (both are downloaded when you buy an HD show) - a "SD" version (640x480) and an "HD" (720p) version so this is the way Apple does it as well.
