HDCP error with Hulu and Netflix
I've had a Apple TV 2 for a few years now and it has worked great.. Two days ago it stopped playing Hulu and Netflix and Vimeo.. All worked fine up until then.. It continues to give me a HDCP error when I try to use them.. It will try to load the program then after 4secs I get the error.. I have changed nothing on my set up.. I have reset and restored, unplugged the HDMI cable and power cable as well.. No luck.. The only thing it will play is content I purchase or have purchased from Apple.. Is anyone else having this issues.. Any help would be appreciated!!
I would try testing with another tv to verify the problem is with the tv and not with the atv

HDCP Error with atv2 and Philips TV
I have a atv2 and a Philips TV, everything is working fine, but not iTunes. I bougt 2 films on iTunes (rented) and after a few seconds (1-5 seconds) the films stops and after a while it´s displayed, that my connection does not support hdcp. But that can´t be, becaus I use a blu-ray player on that TV too. I tried with different hdmi cables, I even bought a very expensive and short one, but always the same error. I tried different hdmi inputs, even downloaded a new firmware on the Philps TV, restarted the atv but nothing worked. Now I payed for 2 films for I´m not able to see. Does any one can help me????

I just downloaded 5.2 and both my Apple TV shows and movies won't come up. Hulu and Netflix works fine, but when I go to select a purchased move or show through the apple menu, spiral comes up for about 10 seconds and then brings me back to the main page

Try logging out of your Netflix and YouTube accounts and see if that will work. If not, a common reset should solve the problem.
Depending on the generation, you should be able to restart the Apple TV through the ,"General" option on your menu.

Random HDCP errors with Netflix
I've been getting random HDCP problems when streaming from Netflix, the error message "This content requires HDCP for playback". Have tried the various fixes discussed here (swapping out my HDMI cable, power-cycling the ATV 2). Some days it works, some days it doesn't, and it's getting very frustrating. I have a Sony Blu-ray player that also streams Netflix, and it works fine. I prefer the interface of the ATV 2, but I'm getting fed up with it working only inconsistently. Also...I was under the impression HDCP is some sort of DRM for downloaded movies, why would/should this even apply to streaming Netflix content??
Swapping HDMI cable was a sensible thing to try.
I would also test another HDMI input if you have one.
I can't get Netflix in UK but would assume Netflix may require HDCP to prevent copying of it's streams - the big companies want to prevent you from copying/recording shows/movies irrespective of how you watch them.

I am a premium subscriber to AcornTV. I have been unable to stream video on my home MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.8) using Firefox 3.6.12. I can easily stream Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, etc, but NOT AcornTV. I have tried the AcornTV player on Safari, Chrome and Firefox, nothing works. I use Time Warner High Speed internet at home, and they claim the problem is on Acorn's end, which Acorn denies. The biggest frustration is that I CAN stream Acorn videos on my office iMac desktop, using the same OS and same version of Firefox (we have our own server at work, though).
I'm watching it right now on Firexfox, but it's on a Dell, not a Mac. Have you tired watching it on a Chrome or IE browser instead of Firefox? And does it work on those browsers?
You should continue to follow up with Acorn TV - email [email protected] and you will get help, from the CTO, if necessary. Also, they now have a diagnostic page built that can analyze your computer and it will give them more information about your system. So, if you haven't tried in two months, it might be worth trying again. -

I purchased a new Apple TV for my parents. I first set it up and tested it on my home TV (at 42" LG LCD TV) and all worked fine. So, I gave it to my parents and set it up on their home TV (a 32" LG LCD TV). As soon as they try and play rented content from iTunes store or Netflix, they get an error that says "This content requires HDCP for playback" and the video won't play. So, I brought the Apple TV back home, updated the software on the ATV and tried it again on my TV — again, no issues playing content. So, I brought it back to my parents, thus time with the same HDMI cable I was using at home, but again, I get the HDCP error and the video won't play. Tried three different HDMI cables and many of the suggestions found online to get things working, but nothing. For the records, the TV that won't work is an LG 32" LCD TV, model number 32LH30-UA. Anyone else have this model and having these issues?
Right now, my only solution is to give them my old Apple TV (gen1) in exchange for the new Apple TV (gen2) since the older Apple TV had component connections, so they can at least use that get around the HDCP bug for iTunes rentals (though, they'll be out of luck for Netflix since Apple abandoned older Apple TV users on that one).
Honestly, this is very frustrating. Once again, all these copyright protection "schemes" end up screwing the legit customer. If this doesn't get sorted out, then it's time to provide alternate, copyright protection-free content to my (and their) Apple TVs via the torrent of options available out there...
k.I searched on LG's website for how to update the firmware on an LG TV. It says you need a "wired connection" (meaning via an ethernet cable) to an Internet modem or router, but my model (the 37LH30-UA) doesn't have an ethernet port. I have emailed LG about the issue, but my conclusion so far is that this TV is just not compatible with Apple TV. We'll see what LG has to say for themselves.
If your parents' TV has an ethernet port, try updating the firmware and see if that works. -
HDCP error with new HDCP compliant monitor
I just bought a new Asus VE228H monitor. I have a ATI Radeon HD 4200, HDCP compliant video card and I am running Windows 7 and iTunes 12.1.1.4. Even though the new monitor is HDCP compliant, I still get an HDCP error in iTunes. I replaced the cable with a new HDMI cable and I still get the error. I have tried searching online for a solution, but haven't found a solution. Thanks in advance for your help.

i have now got my atv2 unit to power back on - and we can play the rented SD movie which is playing now to a happy family....
No HDCP error message appeared this time.
This what we did to fix our issues....
1) Pressed the HDMI cable more firmly into the HDMI port into TV - this allowed the ATV2 to actually show/reappear onto the tv panel.
2) Plugged both power leads for TV and ATV DIRECTLY into wall. (Previously, we had both AC leads plugged into a 4x multi power board and had this plugged into the wall.
We started the SD movie and no HDCP error appeared and movie is still playing as i type...
Now, to repeat this error/diagnostic, we then plugged the TV power lead back into the 4 x multi power board and plugged the board back into the wall. Immediately, the dreaded HDCP error re-appeared. We then replugged TV back into wall directly and no HDCP error message.
Hypothesis #1 :
Now, this 4 x multi power board also had our DVD player and stereo connected to it. Perhaps our DVD (potential recording device) was being detected and hence the HDCP barrier came up so that we were not able to record this movie.... just a hunch but sounds plausible.....
Hypothesis #2 :
Also, this 4 x multi power board was within immediate vacinity of the ATV2 unit. Possible interference.....
When the 'dust' settles and the family finishes watching the movies, (1 x HD , 1 x SD), i will plug the 4 x multi power board into another AC wall socket way out of the way of the ATV2 unit (around 4m) and try to repeat this error to validate my hypotheses - noted above.
I will report findings later in around 6 hours...

[SOLVED] errors with fdisk and cryptsetup; is my drive going bad?
I'm having issues with re-formatting an external hard drive using dm-crypt. It was previously formatted with TrueCrypt/NTFS, which I used as a shared backup drive between Windows and Arch. At some point, it stopped being able to mount, which I attributed to allowing Windows to "fix" it after improper dismount (e.g. a hard kill).
I decided to re-format with ext4 and only use it from Arch, but now I'm wondering if I may have a hardware issue with the drive. I've tried a lot more (like going through the full zero write after mounting the drive as a temporary dm-crypt device), but here's the condensed version to illustrate the problem.

This is on a fresh boot. Just adding that as I've had issues with kernel modules after updating if a new kernel comes through. A fresh boot removes that potential issue.

I had a bunch of custom options, but other Arch posts suggested just trying the default, which is what I've done here. It fails with the same error as when I try to pass a cipher, key size, etc. ("Command failed with code 5: IO error while encrypting keyslot.").

Things also tend to hang with respect to the drive at this point. For example, fdisk -l spits out /dev/sda partitions immediately and then just hangs instead of printing out /dev/sdb info, then eventually quits (without ever writing it).
Any suggestions on where to look/how to troubleshoot? I found some possibly related posts, but nothing that looks promising:
- Impossible to crypt the drive using cryptsetup (fixed by rebooting)
- cryptsetup fails to open Udev cookie 0xd4d94f5 (semid 0) waiting for z (no responses; the hang after seems similar)
There's a couple odds and ends references to cryptsetup 1.6.6 having issues. I downloaded 1.6.4-1 and 1.6.5-1 and -2 from ARM to try, but wanted to post this in the meantime in case something stuck out.

It had been chugging along a good few hours, and I was surprised it would take that long. I was able to format it with ext4 using Windows 7 (I dual boot) with the MiniTool Partition Wizard but I didn't use it like that before trying to solve the cryptsetup issue again.
This last time around, I was getting unresponsive behavior. I think I need to reboot each time I try something with cryptsetup, as any commands related to that drive seem to hang afterwards (fdisk, umount, eject, mkfs, or trying crypsetup again). Perhaps I'll just let it cook overnight with mkfs and see if I can at least have an unencrypted, but functional drive.
One interesting tidbit is that even though cryptsetup fails, when I've tried to issue mkfs afterward, it asks me to confirm that I want to format the disk since it has a LUKS header... so something appears to have been written. Is it possible the header is causing some issues? I don't know much about the structure of a disk (like what range the MBR resides in, what constitutes a header, etc.) but have been wondering if there's some way to start really, really clean with the disk. Like I'd just bought it -- something appears to be lingering around from previous efforts?

I paged down quite a ways and those seem like the unique messages when I search the journal for "sdb". Anything stand out? I will say that the same sector numbers appeared in multiple blocks of the third error type listed, so that makes me wonder if something is genuinely wrong with the disk. I'll post the output of the full smartctl scan when I hopefully run it tomorrow.

[Partially Solved] Error with bsdtar and symbolic links
I'm trying to install a package (asymptote) from AUR but am running into an odd error. During the extract phase I get errors like
asymptote-1.70/base/asy-keywords.el: Can't update time for asymptote-1.70/base/asy-keywords.el: Function not implemented
bsdtar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.
I found a post that may help: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=50750. Do I really have to do this?
By the way, I too am running on a Linode (Xen virtualization).

However, others might find my work-around useful, so I document it below.

Error with calculations and printing output
Been a few months since I did any kind of java programming and cannot seem to figure out what is wrong with my program. It gives me an error with rentalCost when it goes to printout the value, does not seem calculate the values, and does not print any of the things I call for at the end. Maybe I need a seperate class or the if/else statements are wrong. The point of the program is for fun, but is to calculate the cost for a cabin based on certain coniditions the user inputs. High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) Errors in iTunes and Display Link Drivers
Since August 2014 after an upgrade to iTunes, my 2010 white unibody macbook has been unable to run ANY videos bought from the iTunes store citing HDCP issues with my INTERNAL screen. I tried external screens, TVs, resetting PRAM, ... etc to no avail. I found a mention of Displaylink drivers as a possible issue.
I use Display Link drivers to run my ASUS MB168B+ external USB screen (which I love). I uninstalled the drivers and voila! the videos work again. Sadly, my screen won't run any more...
I am posting this in hope that the iTunes team and the Display Link team partner up to fix this issue which seems to be affecting a number of Mac users around the world.The problem is probably your internet connection not the Apple TV.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net. If you do this using a computer connected by ethernet, you should get a fairly good indication of your incoming speed from the ISP. If you are using a device connected by wifi you will need to take account of the portion of your internal network being used and the effect it might have on the result you are seeing. Another option is to access your modem (see your manual to determine how to do this) through your web browser or specialist software supplied by your ISP, the software on the modem itself will often tell you your connection speeds somewhere.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps. -
Hdcp error trying to stream netflix
We have been using Apple TV to stream net flix for about 9 months. Today, when we try to play any content it goes straight to an HDCP error or freezes after two seconds then goes to the HDCP error. I have restarted everything several times and replaced the immediate hdmi cable (the other is in the wall). Nothing seems to help.
I have a Verizon TV. I did a restore to the Apple TV and nothing. I took the apple tv upstairs where we have another one and there were no issues. I brought the upstairs one down, and same error. I was going to try another port, but the way the tv is mounted, I can't access the a port. I am starting to think it may be a cable running in the wall, but it has worked for several months.
