leroydouglas is correct, DO NOT install Norton or any other commercial anti virus software. They all work very poorly with Macs. If you insist on AV software, consider Sophos, it is free.

Hello, I have a problem, my macbook pro runs slowly when unplugged but if I plugged it, it runs perfectly.
The battery needs to be replaced, or there is some other hardware problem.

The only real and safe way to do this is to do it manually looking through each folder individually.
Many third party utilities claim to clean out a hard drive of various detritus, but some times will delete data that it shouldn't and delete any other important data that it shouldn't have.
The only "safe" way to accomplish what you need to accomplish is to do this manually.
Stay away from the OS X system folder!!!!!

You can download an app called OmniDiskSweeper.
This app will allow you to see where files maybe able to be delete are located.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you have images stored in iPhoto,,the only way to weed out duplicates is to do this manually.
When you delete them, they go to iPhoto's Trash. Remember to empty this when you are done.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what are duplicates and what isn't
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

My laptop a macbook pro is my only connection with the outside world, I would like to be able if possible to watch or stream video content to my bigscreen tv as I easily can via the 1080 connection available on the two of them.
But I would like to be able to keep the video playing on the external TV screen and use the computer screen to view other content on the web simultainously is that macbook pro posterous or MB Propetually possible?

On the screen containing your menu bar, you should now see a Displays preference dialog box with an "Arrangement" tab in it. Click the Arrangement tab. Uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays," or make sure it is already unchecked. In the image within the preferences dialog box you should see two adjoining blue rectangles representing your two screens. A white bar on one representes the menu bar and indicates that that is the primary display. The larger rectangle represents your TV screen. If it's on the right side of the smaller rectangle representing your MBP's screen, then dragging a window off the right side of the built-in screen will move the window onto the TV.
Now open any application window — a web browser window, for example — and drag it by its title bar to move it off the edge of your built-in screen onto the TV screen. Got that? You can do the same thing with any other window, including a DVD Player or VLC window containing a movie that you want to watch.
Things to note: In this dual-display mode, which is called Extended Desktop mode, the menu bar and Dock will always appear on only one of the screens, and you can choose which one they appear on by dragging the white bar representing the menu bar from one rectangle to the other in the System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement tab. You can also set the resolutions of the two screens independently of each other. The highest available resolution on each screen will always provide the sharpest image. -
Using a Macbook Pro and OSX 10.9.2. When I am typing an email, it fills my trash folder with multiple copies of the email before I send it. I can have over 10 copies every time. How can I keep this from happening and filling my trash folder? I did not have these issues with previous version of OSX.

In Mail, my icloud account the smtp's server is offline & the incoming server is gray? How can I reverse this ?
did try going on server SMTP in the edit section, both on " accout info" and "advance". no change. thanksOkay, fixed it on mine. In Mail.app:
1) Mail menu | Preferences.
2) Select problematic account in list on left.
3) Select "Edit SMTP Server List..." from Outgoing Mail Server drop-down.
4) Fix username by appending domain name
(append "@gmail.com" if standard account, or your own domain if apps user).
5) Re-enter password.
Save your preferences. -
I've installed the new ios on my mac mini and ever since i can not shut down my computer, it does now restard itshelf and give me a messages saing that it has shut down because of a problem.

If you are downloading multiple apps then they will download one at a time. If it's just the one app that you are downloading (and you're using wifi if it's over the 20 meg limit for 3G), then try a reset and see if it resumes loading after the iPad has restarted : ress and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.
2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that. -

Each time I boot my Macbook Pro running a currently patched version of Yosemite I am asked to "Sign in with my Apple ID." After that I have to approve the use of Find My Mac, and then I have to agree to the Terms and conditions of Use. This is very annoying since I use Bootcamp a lot and it adds a fair effort to the reboot process. Any thoughts?
Some additional clues that may or may not have bearing on this.
Once I am booted into Yosemite completely, if I open Safari (also current version) I am told my Safari Extensions have been migrated and I have to re-enable each one individually. They have all been disabled. This will occur each time I completely close Safari and reopen it.

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on a couple things about your specific configuration. The message you mentioned about the disk being encrypted would seem to indicate that you may have File Vault enabled. If that is the case and you are having a login issue, you would need to use the File Vault recovery key to reset your login password instead of your Apple ID, as noted in the following article:
