HELP!!!  Cannot transfer music from one computer to another?

I have an older computer with itunes 7 and several purchased and music from CD's burned. The issue is that the older computer's cd-rw drive is broke. I just purchased a new computer. How do I get the music from my old computer into itunes on my new computer. I am using the 5th Gen 30GB ipod and have all of my music and podcasts on the ipod.

I'm sorry i've been the only one replying you, i myself am waiting for replies on my own question.
My advice is that there is no fail-safe device that can protect your files safely forever. The safest way is still to have more than 1 backup. You have your ipod and an external drive so thats 2 options, provided there's enough space. Remember the link i gave you in my 1st post? I just read about a 'Consolidate library' option and i felt it can be useful.
Let me give you an example using Windows PC:
I have 'Song A' on my desktop and 'Song B' in \My Documents\My Music. Assuming my itunes library is empty with no songs, by dragging these two songs into your itunes' music page, they will be added to your library. You should also know that unless you delete Song A from your desktop or move it to another location in that same PC, Song A will always play when u double-click it on itunes, this is basic information.....Ok, now i have 2 songs in my library, but they are in 2 diff directories of my PC. Go to the Advanced tab in iTunes and click 'Consolidate Library', this will create 1 new copy of Song A and B each in your \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music folder. Now connect your back-up device, it can be your ipod or an external drive, *copy the whole iTunes folder in the 'My Music' folder into your back-up device and back up is done,* according to the webpage.
Just give it a try. Provided:
1) you have enough disk space in your PC
2) the original song file is still in your PC, somewhere. If an '!' appears next to a song name in iTunes, this means the original song file has either been deleted or moved to a new location within the PC, you'll need to find the song file so that iTunes can update its brain as to where the file has ended up in.
3) you have enough disk space in your back-up device,
you should be able to do a back-up. Connect the back-up device into your new PC and copy the iTunes folder into the new PC's 'My Music' folder. Open iTunes in your new PC and it should extract the Music Library from the iTunes folder you just pasted from the back-up device.
Do you have songs in your new PC? Try the 'Consolidate Library' option on that PC first or any PC that has lesser songs cos by using this option, additional disk space is taken up to create the copies in the \My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music folder. Try to understand how this option works so that if you eventually do backup you won't accidently delete songs from either PC. It may be complicated, but do read up the link i provided earlier for more info...Cheers!

    Hi lexipuppy,
I dont know if you have your music on your other computer was on itunes, but if it was, make sure that you signed into your itunes account on your other computer. If you are signed in then your music should show up in your library.

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.

  • How to transfer music from one computer to another when they are at 2 diffe

yes hi I was wondering how do i get music off of my one computer to another when they are in two different homes. they are both authorized to my account but i have music on one that i want on my other. can anyone please help.

    Hello!
To have same library on both of your authorized machines, you need first locate, on both of them, the iTunes Media Folder location (Preferences > Advanced) then you need make them syncronized. How to do this, will exists some tools, I will not go further about that stuff, you can google them... back to topic:
After you do any change to the files content of one library, you can just drag and drop the media folder on iTunes, it will rescan the library itself and update all changes you made.
Be aware if your machines are authorized on multiple accounts, you need be logged on store with the account used to purchase any drm-enabled song you want to listen.

  • How do I transfer music from one computer to another??

I have 700 songs on an outdated laptop that I cannot update with Service Pack 2, thus it does not recognize my new ipod. However, I have iTunes 7.6 on my new desktop and want to get all that music over to that PC. Any idea how???

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
Your iPod can also be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

How do I transfer 12.5GB of music when I only have an 8GB key? also tried home sharing but if I de authourise 1 computer I lose the lot!!

These are two possible approaches that should work to move the existing library to the new laptop.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase are reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you can no longer access the original library or a backup see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
If you don't have a big enough device to backup your library I would strongly recommend you work on that issue. That said there is no reason why you can't transfer everything over a network, or breakup the transfer into smaller chunks...

  • I have an iPod touch, how do I transfer music from one computer to another?

I have an iPod touch.  I just got a new computer and need to transfer my music to the new computer.  Not all of my music is from iTunes, some is from CDs, so how to I transfer it over without loosing my music?

Since this isn't something officially approved by Apple, Im hesitant to give any detailed advice.
However, a quick Google search will surely yield plenty of information.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Homesharing gives you the option of seeing only the content in the shared library, that is not already in your own library.

    Hi,
first, I'm not Adobe's "slave" as you might to accuse me. Most of the posters here are users like me.
I only can repeat that what I found in Adobe's help sites, as I wrote above. You are free to figure out the "real" truth and - the best would be - you may contact Adobe directly, here are - I'm sure you know them -  the links I would use: http://helpx.adobe.com/support.html  and http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html.
