HELP! Firewire Drives Unmounting by themselves.

I have a small workgroup with a G4/800 server with two FireWire drives connected. One of the drives contains ALL of the organizations files and is shared over the network using the SharePoints software. The other Firewire drive is just a backup drive which is used by Retrospect. What is happening is the users will frequently find the firewire shares mounted over the network on their machines will disconnect and users will receive an alert telling them that the network volume is no longer available or something. When we go to the server we find the Firewire drives are no longer mounted on the desktop. Otherwise, the machine is running normally. Trying to remount the drives usually does not work and I have found that the only surefire way to get them back is to turn the drives off, restart the machine, then turn the drives on. After that, they will mount fine and once again become available to the clients' machines.
I am at a loss as to what would be causing these volumes to unmount or eject themselves. Can anyone help me to troubleshoot this?

External hard drive spontaneously unmounted? Try these tips:
NEW FIRMWARE: Try updating your external hard drive's firmware, which is available from your drive manufacturers Web site--or just use VersionTracker's (www.versiontracker.com) search function to find it. Be sure to back up your data before applying the update, and carefully follow the manufacturers instructions.
OUT OF iSIGHT: If you're using an iSight camera while you're using a FireWire drive, the camera may be interfering with the drive's ability to stay mounted. Try temporarily disconnecting your iSight and moving it to a separate FireWire port. If you have multiple FireWire devices, try using a FireWire hub.
POWER PROBLEM: A faulty power adapter could be causing your drive to unmount. Your drive may not be getting enough juice to stay on, causing the drive to turn off and thereby unmounting it from your Mac. Alternately, the power adapter may not be providing a steady amount of power, causing your drive to turn on and off. Try replacing the adapter. If you can't get a replacement adapter from the hard drive manufacturer, try your local electronics store. Just make sure the adapter you choose has the same connector and input/output voltage. you can find the input/output voltage on the adapter itself.

  • FireWire drive unmounting/disapering when computer returns from sleep

I have a problem since the latest software update 10.4.10
that my WD 500GB FW800 drive keeps unmounting/disapearing after
the computer returns from sleep, and subsequently issuing a unclean unmount message!
Toggling the drive power restores it and so far no data is lost... I hope..

Well, yesterday I decided to do some troubleshooting to confirm the source of the problem. I connected a different external hard drive using the same USB2 cable that I was using with the problematic WD Mybook. I performed flawlessly and showed no issues with not being accessable after the computer woke from sleep. Next I connected the same drive via Firewire 400. Also no issues. That seemed to confirm that there was a problem with the WD drive! However, just to be sure, I reconected the WD Mybook with the original USB cable and gave it another whirl. It has also been performing flawlessly for the past day!
    Possibilities:
1 There was minor oxidation on the contacts of the cable or in the drive socket which gave a poor connection resulting in the problem. Removing and replacing the cable several times removed the oxide and restored proper electrical contact and drive operation.
2 Something in the WD Mybook firmware "reset" when it was unpowered for a few hours, also restoring proper operation. WD's website states that the Mybooks are able to remain in standby mode for long periods of time but that they recommend they be powered down when not in use.
It would be interesting to see if anyone else can confirm that their Mybooks begin to operate properly after "giving them an unpowered rest" or by cleaning the USB connections.
I know how to keep my Mybook operational for now, but I will likely have to ditch it when I move to a multi FW bus computer in the future (unless WD can correct their firmware).
    Cheers

  • Mount USB/Firewire drive from shell or cron job

Is there a way to mount a USB/Firewire drive from the shell or possibly mount it using a cron job? Here's the situation. I have a user that keeps all of her data on her desktop or in her Documents folder. I have attached a firewire drive to her PowerMac G5 (OS 10.4.6) and successfully created cron jobs to backup her entire user folder every night. The problem is that she logs off of her computer before she leaves work. When she logs of the firewire drive unmounts and the cron job fails because it cannot find the drive. I was hoping there was a way to mount the drive using a script so that it will mount, let the cron job run, and then possibly unmount the drive afterwards. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
MacMini, PowerMac G5, iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Try adding the following line to the beginning of the job:
    mount -a
You may need to add u and/or w to the command after the a without any additional spaces for the mount to work properly.

  • DVD Drive unmounts and crashes any app that tries to access it...help!

    Hi,
I have a MacPro with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR106d. All has been working well until recently.
Yesterday, I started a project to encode my DVDs for Apple TV using Handbrake.
When I insert a DVD, it spins up, mounts it, and allows normal operation.
However, once the drive spins down (e.g. after a rip), the drive unmounts and won't eject the DVD. I've tried ejecting it using the Terminal, but Terminal freezes. I've tried Disk Utility, but it won't get past the 'gathering information' stage. I've tried any other app that accesses the drive, and they all crash. Eventually, Finder itself crashes and won't restart (or allow me to shutdown).
The only thing to do is a hard-reset (ouch) which makes it work as normal.
    Any ideas?
I've done a Permissions repair but no joy.
    Mat

Really strange. If I 'catch' the drive before it's powered down and eject the disk once Handbrake has finished, it's fine - and will do another. If I leave it for a minute, the drive just switches off completely. So so strange. I wonder if Handbrake is to blame?
I've tried it on another user account as suggested, and it does the same thing. I'm going to try not using Handbrake and just play it, stop it, try to eject it and see what happens. Thanks for your help.

  • Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!

Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

  • Please Help! - Cannot Access Or See External USB/Firewire Drive

Can anyone help or advise me as I’m really at a loss as how to fix a problem I have with my external hard drive and OX 10.4.6.
I had just completed a fresh install of OS X on my PowerPC iMac G5 using the “Erase & Install” feature.
Everything had gone extremely well, all my applications and settings had been re-set as I normally have them (I made backups) and was able to access my external hard disk, which is a Maxtor OneTouch USB/FireWire 250 GB model.
I then setup a second account for my brother, which I setup as a “Standard” account.
When I then went to access some of the files on my external disk and tried to copy them over to my Desktop, it refused me permission and said that I had to ask the permission of the “Owner’ which it said was Steve (my Brother) which was strange because as I said his account was only setup as a standard account whereas I had an administrator account (and am the main user of the computer).
I went into the Steve's account and looked at the Permissions information using the “Get Info” dialogue box. This showed that the owner was indeed Steve, so I changed it to my Name (Andrew) went back to my account, and found could no longer see the external disk at all.
Returning to Steve’s account I checked the permissions again, and asked it to ignore permissions.
But now I cannot see or access the disk at all in either account, it just does not show up on the desktop or in the Finder Sidebar.
The strange thing is I can see it in “Disk Utility” but when I ask it to either verify or Repair the Disk permissions, it reports that they are all or OK and “no repairs were necessary”.
I have tried connecting the disk with both types of connection - USB2 and the Firewire drive, and the results are exactly the same, the drive is not visible on the Desktop or the Finder Sidebar, but is visible to Disk Utility.
The disk is formatted as a ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive
Can anyone please tell me how I can get my external disk to show on my computer again, as ALL my backup documents and programs are on the disk, and most of the data cannot be replaced.
Would doing a complete fresh install of the OS X operating system fix this as a last resort?
I hope someone can advise, as I really am desperate.
    Thanks

Yes, I didn't think it was very good either!
You are correct in I should have said "Repair Disk" - Verify Permissions is not available on the maxtor drive ( it is dimmed) in Repair Disk.
Until now, the drive has worked perfectly, and I did not install any of Maxtors software when I originally connected the drive to this system, I just formatted it as a Mac Extended and it worked great. It was only after the fresh Erase & Install - even then it worked fine. It was only when I created a new account that the problem started.
What I have done is get hold of a demo version of a program called "Mac Drive 6" which allows you to read any Mac formatted disk or drive on a Windows system, - fortunately i still have my Windows XP Pro system which I have also connected to my home network.
So for the next four days (the length of the demo) I can access all of my files on the disk and copy them to my Windows system.
This is really great because I have all my data and images back which were my biggest concern.
I thought I might get another drive anyhow, and when I have everything backed up on a new drive and on the Windows system, I can then reformat the Maxtor drive and start afresh with it.
Thanks for all your help anyhow.

  • Trying to move film project between external firewire drives HELP!

i have a film project that i've been working on and all of the media files and the project file are on one external firewire drive. I want to move the film project to a different, smaller and more transportable firewire drive, however, when i use the media manager to make a copy of the project on the second external drive, when i try to open the new project, it uses only approximate outpoints of the clips in the sequence and all my editting work is pretty much lost. is there a way to preserve my editted outpoints? please help! thanks, jkkjnz

the clips all have names. 01_01 until 01_85 or so and 02_01 until 02_52 or so. when the cop of the project is finishing up, a series of error messages appear which say "an unknown error occured while trying to reconnect clip 02_12 [for example] to the copied file". Then, when i try to reconnect the media from the new project, it says specifically for some clips, "02_09 does not have enough media content to reconnect clip in Sequence 1" and then after a list of similar messages, it says "one or more files did not have enough media to reconnect some clips. some edited clip items have had their outpoints adjusted." grrrr...

  • USB drives keep unmounting by themselves

This keeps happening over and over...
my USB drives are unmounting by themselves.
    with no prompt or eject.
I've tried to re-set the PRAM. with no luck.
    is this a on-going problem?
    what can I do?

There are several reasons this might be happening so you'll need to provide us with more information.
    1) are the drives connected directly to the computer or to a hub? If to a hub, try removing the hub and see if a drive or two connected directly to the computer will stay mounted.
    2) who is the manufacturer of the drive(s)?
    3) has this been an ongoing problem from day one or did it just recently start after a long period of stability? If the latter, did you make any changes about the same time the trouble began?

  • FireWire drive keeps unmounting when nobody's logged in

I have a Core Solo Mini I am using as a server for various purposes (shared iTunes and web server, with another partition reserved for Time Machine once Leopard comes out) as well as for normal desktop use for my wife and kids. The server partitions are all on an external 400 GB FireWire drive, since the mini's internal drive is so small.
[FWIW, I used to use a Cube in this fashion, but came up against its 120 GB limit for internal drive]
Anyways, even though I have it set to share the FireWire partitions via AFP, and even though I've pointed Apache over to directories on the FireWire drive as the root directories for various virtual hosts, the machine still has a habit of unmounting the FireWire drive if nobody's logged in and I'm not actively using the net-mounted drive on another machine (eg, if I'm not playing iTunes off of it).
When this happens, trying to browse its drives from another machine only shows the internal partitions, not the FireWire drive, and Apache barfs up errors like "document not found for /".
This kind of s*cks. Is there any way I can get OS X to never unmount the FireWire drive?
To answer the obvious question: yes, the mini is set to never sleep.
    Thanks in advance.

I had a similar unmounting issue with one of my internal hard disks that I was using for nightly backups. I discovered that when no one was logged in the backup would fail. I have to look up the required fix to keep the disk mounted, someone here gave me the method for changing that default behavior with a simple terminal command. Don't have it handy with me right now, but I think this should be fixable by the same method for your FW drive. I'll post it later, if someone else hasn't before me.

  • CentOS & dropped FireWire drives -- please help.

I installed Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.3 (as well as RDBMS 10.2.0.3) on 64-bit CentOS 4.5 running on 2 AMD64 machines. Installation went fine and everything started/worked. But occasionally the FireWire drive is disappearing (fdisk –l giving nothing) and CRS crashing! The problem doesn’t seem to be CRS – it got to be the combination of OS (Linux kernel 2.6.9-55.EL) & Oracle FireWire module (built into kernel using source code) – or may be the Card or Ethernet cable! I didn’t see anything in the /var/log/messages -- totally lost & can’t do anything!
Can you please tell what might be the reason & how to resolve it? Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi, Thanks Very much for the reply.
I got into this situation by applying a permission change to the whole of the Macbook folder, i dont really know what you would call it but the one containing all the system, library and other system files. Here is the result i got

    Help!

This forum is for Mac hardware made before 1998, and gets very little traffic, so I doubt you'll find anyone here with experience with a newer drive made by a third party.
We don't know your Mac model or OS version but, if the G-Raid is a Thunderbolt drive, you can ask in the section for your computer model or the forum for your OS version. However, were it mine,  I would start here:

Please let us know what Mac model you have and we can ask the hosts to move your post to a forum where you are more like to get views and help.

  • Firewire drives random unmount

I have 2 WD My Book external drives attached via Firewire to my 27" iMac, one is used for Time Machine backups the other is additional system storage
I had this config running under Snow Leopard on this system and my earlier 24" iMac with no issues.
Since upgrading the 27" iMac to Lion I am experiencing random unmounts of both Firewire drives with the result that  the Time Machine backups are failing and I have to physiclly reset the external drives to get them to sucessfully mount again.
Both WD drives have the latest firmware and OS X is up to date - any thoughts how to resolve this problem and keep the Firewire drives mounted at all times ??

No, never solved the problem, I still get the Firewire drives randomly unmounting and I have to power then down to get them to remount - this never happened with Snow Leopard ( or prior OS versions on my previous 24" iMac ), only started after the Lion upgrade.

  • HELP! - Error 1309 - Can't copy file over 10gig to External firewire drive.

I know this is more of a hardware issue but I know that only other final cut users would be copying single files over 10gigs.
I have a G5 that I use for video production. Video Files can be large and to back them up I got an external hard drive ( Maxtor 1-touch 200gig) When I try to copy a file on to it that is 10gigs it give me a 1309 error. I have found that other people have had trouble copying files over 2gigs over to an external firewire drive. But I haven't found any answers. Can anyone offer any advice on how to solve this?
    Thanks

If you don't want to format it for the mac, you are limited to file sizes under 2gb.
Another alternative is to hook a firewire drive to your Mac and then share it with your windows machines (the program SHAREPOINTS is useful for this).
The drive can then be formatted Mac OS Extended and, once shared, the PCs can access all files without size limitations.
    good luck.
