HELP!!!  Font Book crashed my OS, I only get my desktop image on startup

I was importing a large folder of fonts into Font Book, which apparently couldn't handle it and froze, I force-powered it down and now anytime I start up, I get my desktop image and my cursor moves but I get no menu options or anything but a search icon (magnifying glass) over a tiny portion of what would be the top menu bar. When I roll over this I get the spinning color wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Font Book importing large font library

Restart and hold down the shift key. This starts in safe mode. rebuild permissions and try restart again. It might take a few minutes to start in safe mode. If this works fine but dont use font book. I'll tell you another way to deal with fonts.

  • Font Book crashing

As I'm attempting to add some new fonts, Font Book crashes whether I add one font or a dozen. I'm not installing them, but just want them handy in the event I want to use them. Is there a limit on the number of fonts this app can handle?
Also, do you recommend any other font management software? This is the first time I've had this issue with Font Book and I'm perplexed.
    TIA
    Ruth

Here's a sampling of the fonts:
    KuriakosSSK BoldItalic.ttf
    KuriakosBlackSSK Bold.ttf
    KoreanTimesSSK.ttf
    Koksure.ttf
    KleinsFirstScriptPark-Medium.ttf
    KG hALLOWEEN1.ttf

    KerusaSSK Italic.ttf
    KerusaSSK BoldItalic.ttf
    KentuckyFriedFont.ttf
    KR Foo'ball.ttf
    KR Fleurish Circle.ttf
They were a download from a trusted source. In this particular download, I was able to add some to Font Book, but then I started having crashes. Before adding to Font Book I verified and deleted fonts that were suspect. I haven't been adding them to the main library, but making a new library that I can access if and when I want. Does this answer your question or do you need more information?
The Help section of Font Book doesn't have a lot of help for a situation like this.
I'm planning on looking at the software you suggest, but was away a good share of the day so I'm finally getting around to answering your question.

On the iPad that only get books purchased on it, do this:

When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
    I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
    before.

  • Font Book crashes when trying to remove corrupt fonts

I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and am having problems with my fonts.
After installing some of my previously used fonts, some of them didn't pass validation. I don't mind removing them - I barely use 1% of the fonts I have, but when I run Font Validation in Font Book and then select all the corrupt files and click "Remove" - Font Book just gets stuck.
Then I went by the list and removed MANUALLY all the invalid font files (the ones with the red cross sign).
Then only the minor warnings remained , but even when I try to remove them with Font Book - it still crashes.
It's ridiculous to remove them manually one by one, cause I have a huge collection of 1000s of fonts and there are more than 500 corrupt fonts there. I'm not using many fonts, but I want to keep my library up and working, so I want to get rid of everything that might cause problems...
    Any help?

    Hi Kurt
Sorry, was busy, didn't answer for some time. Thanks - it helped me to run Font Book again and install new fonts, but Font Book is still causing me a lot of trouble - never had so much in Leopard - I'm frustrated, maybe you can help on those:
After completely wiping clean all my fonts databases and folders etc. I've started loading back my Font libraries into Font Book. I don't copy fonts to any new folder, I just activate them from wherever they are without copying. First thing I noticed, is the amount of "corrupt" fonts has increased enormously - I have a couple of folders with alsmot all 400-500 fonts corrupt (yellow sign) with this error message: 'kern' table structure and contents. All of them with the same Error message.
The next thing that happened, is that at some point Font Book has just deleted my new font libraries again without any notice. Then I installed them back again. It deleted them again (I think after a restart).
Another bug is that Font Book always activates all the new fonts upon loading them, although I clearly runed off "Automatic fonts activation" in the Preferences. So every time I load a library I manually disable all of the fonts, and then enable only the ones I use.
BUT! What happens next, is completely outrageous - when I launched FB next time, all my new font libraries where activated again! jezus - I had to go and disable them all and again activate the ones I need. This repeated several times, until I decided to delete the fontbook.plist prefs file from Preferences. I think it helped for now, but I'm not sure yet - will wait and see.
Also there is a bug in FB, that when I install a new library, it always jumps my cursor into renaming the name of this library, and doesn't let me navigate the fonts with keyboard, unless I restart. This is an obvious bug.
And the last thing that happened is that I cannot type my Baltic languages fonts anymore - the input of the keyboard is completely wrong. Those are TrueType fonts, and most of them worked perfectly in Leopard with InDesign. Now when I type the baltic letters in InDesign I see squares. But when I open Glyphs - I see all those letters and need to put them in manually from Glyphs panel. This is totally frustrating and I cannot work. But I will make a separate post about this issue.
    Thanks in advance for help...

  • Font Book Crashes

Whenever I open Font Book, it crashes immediately. Deleted preferences, fb.db, logged in in Safe Mode, repaired disk permissions. Doesn't work. Appreciate any help.

Since you've already tried trashing the database file, then it's got to be a corrupt font, which will cause the database to be damaged each time it's added to the list.
Create a new folder on the desktop. Move all of your fonts out of the /Library/Fonts/ folder and the Fonts folder of your user account into the new folder. Dump Font Book's database file again. Also clear out the font cache files after moving the fonts. Font Finagler can do that.
After the Mac restarts (Font Finagler will force a restart), try Font Book again. It should open.

  • Please help -- Address Book Crashing on Launch, causing problems with Mail

    Problem:
Address Book crashes on launch. Mail crashes on launch as soon as it tries to access address book. Can't use either program.
    History:
First noticed problem after an out-of-hard-disk space problem. Had about 2 GB left on the 80 GB hard drive in my 1 GHz iMac G4. Was comparing two very large TIFF files in Photoshop when it crashed because it had used up all the available scratch disk space. Mail and Address Book were also open at the time, along with a number of other apps.
After re-starting, Mail began crashing on launch. There had been a message open at the time of the first crash, and it appeared that the crash was happening as soon as Mail went to Address Book to find the sender's image for that message. The crash report showed that Address Book was the thread that failed.
Tried to launch Address Book; crashes on launch.
    Both applications refuse to launch.
(Have also noticed that Safari crashes when entering text in a field -- good thing I have an iBook to use to post this plea for help!)
    Attempted Solutions:
    Scoured these discussions for suggestions.
    Trashed preferences, re-started & re-launched; no luck.
Repaired permissions and disk repeatedly until squeaky clean
Used Pacifist to re-install sync services, address book, mail; no luck
Re-run Combo Update PPC 10.4.6; no luck
Have now done a full Archive and Install, re-installed the 10.4.6 combo update and the most recent security update, and verified permissions and disk.
Problem still persists -- which suggests it's something in my User library, I presume, but I'm out of ideas. Very tired and frustrated -- please help!
I've copied the most recent pertinent information from Address Book's Crash Log and posted below. Let me know if I need to post anything else, or logs from other apps. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem, everyone!

I'm no expert on Address Book, but I can tell you that the files involved in the crash could be HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and anything in HOME/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/. It looks like you have ignored this latest folder so far. I would try moving both items to the Desktop, restart, and see whether that stops the crashes.

  • Font book crashes on launch, can't use MS Office

    Hi there,
I have a problem which started with MS office not opening. As soon as I tried to open a Word document, it would close saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. After a spot of googling I discovered that this might be a problem with a corrupted font, and sure enough fontbook wont open either!
When I try to open fontbook, it says that it has closed unexpectedly. Unfortunately, all this happened the day before I was due to hand in a 6,000 word project for my MSc which I could suddenly not access to print off... needless to say that after 4 years of trouble-free (ish) Mac ownership I was more than slightly hacked off.
Anyway I decided to create a new user account to test if the problem happened in there as well, and luckily everything was fine and I was able to print the document, but font book and Office still wont open in my regular user account.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance

Does Font Book still not open? If so, then you probably have some damaged fonts. Though it could also be an OS problem. But it's easier to start with the fonts, so try this.
At the bottom of my article, Font Management in OS X, you'll find instructions to reinstall all of the fonts that come with OS X.
Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
    ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
Go to the /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts/ folder. Copy all of the fonts in that folder to the /Library/Fonts/ folder, overwriting all of the existing fonts of the same name. The ones you want to replace may also be in your user account at ~/Library/Fonts/. You'll just have to look first.
If after that you still have problems, then it's more likely a problem with Office itself, or the OS.
The link, or one of the links above directs you to my personal web site. While the information is free, it does ask for a contribution. As such, I am required by Apple's rules for these discussions to include the following disclaimer.

  • Help - Font Book and font Library doesn't work

I've just updated to a new iMac on Yosemite, and Font Book doesn't work. Neither does putting fonts into the "Library"
There is a range of fonts that ARE working that are already in either place, but some (that worked up until two days ago in my old Mac running OS 10.6.8) just won't work.
If I select the fonts in Font Book, Font Book doesn't load them. If I put them in the Library, they don't appear for use in any application.
As a designer, updating fonts is essential, and if this can't be fixed I'm in serious trouble! So any advice welcome!

We see posts like this here all the time. A person upgrades to a new OS, and Font Book suddenly stops working. Usually, the problem is that Font Book's database has been trashed by the upgrade with the very common symptoms you're seeing. You suddenly can't add fonts, and fonts Font Book says are open don't appear in some, or any apps.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
If that alone doesn't do it (it should), then clear out all of the font cache data.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Help!  PC crashed.. how do I get my music from my IPod back onto my ITunes and PC??

My PC recently crashed.  I have a new one now, but once I re-installed ITunes it only pulled the purchased music.  How do I get all the other music that I burned from CD's and from other sources back onto my PC from the IPod?  I know there has to be a way to do this... please help!

You'll need the assistance of some sort of third party software.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering a few different possiblities.

  • When I bought my notebook it came with Itunes, I purchased a few songs, then my note book crashed.  How do I get back what I purchased?

When I purchased my notebook Itunes was a feature.  After I used it about 6 months ago my computer crashed and I had to reinstall everything.  I need to know how to get back my purchases from Itune store?

Songs that have been purchased from the iTunes store can be downloaded again at no charge. Open iTunes and sign in to your account in the store. Under Music Quick Links on the right hand side, look for the Purchased link.
From here you can download all your purchased music again. No charge. The only exception to this might be if a song you purchased is no longer available on the store.
    Best of luck.

Thanks! It has become apparent that I do indeed have
a few hours to kill before Diskwarrior hopefully
works it's magic. In the meantime I checked out
MacOSG.com, lots of interesting stuff and very
informative. I have had issues on this G4 I'm working
on now with garbled type on some websites so I
downloaded a copy of Font Finagler as recommended on
your site. But it didn't resolve the issue. I suppose
with this time of reflection while I await to see if
I'll have a repaired disk when DW is done, I can go
through fonts and start trashing fonts and see if I
can resolve that! Thanks again for your advice on my
