You can't. Until the previous owner removes the activation lock, the device is useless to you; Apple won't remove it unless presented with proof that the registered owner is dead.

I have a similar problem. I restored my iPhone 5 to the latest available OS. After completing the process the phone never restarted. The phone was fully charged when I restored it but now refuses to charge past the red battery icon. I have been able to get the phone in UFD mode several times and have been able to load the new OS on the phone. The Apple logo does come on and the software fully loads. iTunes tells me the phone will restart but never does. I left it to charge all night but it never appeared to load the battery. This morning I went to the Grand Central Terminal apple store for help. A woman at the store plugged the phone in but it never charged. She absolutely refused to believe that I got my phone in UFD mode and loaded any software on. I don't think it is a battery issue. The only solution I was given was to buy a new phone. Repairing it was out of the question. At this point the phone is completely useless. Thanks in advance for the help.

I recently got an iphone from a friend because I was never able to afford one. It's quite old, and he told me it hasn't worked in a while. He said that either the battery of the sync/charger port was no longer functioning; because one day when he was using it the battery drained relatively fast and after that it would no longer turn on. The unit itself is in brand new condition, he used a case and a screen protector, and both water damage indicators are completely white! He said it no longer connects to itunes, is no longer recognized by any computer, the screen no longer turns on, and there is absolutely no activity on the phones part. Therefore he no longer had any use for it and gave it to me, and wished me luck in my goal to fix it. Since receiving it i've gone through the normal solutions, i've tried resetting it and putting it into DFU mode by holding both the sleep/wake button and the home button to no avail. I've tried it on all 3 of my computers (although they are all fairly old) and on my fiancées computer. My fiancée has a working iphone 3g and I've tried connecting my phone using her computer and sync cable. All to no avail. I am positively clueless as to what the problem is, the phone has never been opened and theres not even a scratch on it! I can't afford a new iphone and the unit itself is an original iphone (2g/edge) so obviously the warranty is no longer active and he did not have applecare either. The phone has a serial number on the back of it if that would be of any use, I honestly would just like to know what is wrong with it, but i'm beginning to doubt that its even possible due to the phone not responding at all. Please help me with my issue =/.

ErkansusI have the exact same issue with an old original iphone and have all but given up. I want to sell the old phone, but I am afraid that there might be some information left (it is a family members phone so I don't want to do that to him). If there is no way to fix it, is there at least a way to erase content without turning the phone on? Seems unlikely.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

You just need to reset the ipod by holding down the sleep button and home button for ipod touch or the menu and centre button on others for about 10 seconds

My itunes match has been enabled. I tried toggling several times. I have restored the phone twice. None of my playlists are appearing on my phone that are in Itunes. I have to have these playlists. Why am I paying for a service that not working properly most of the time. The other day I could not play all of my songs from my playlist.
Try it again. Apple fixed the issue. Turn your Match off and then on again.

I was trying to do a simple udate of the ios software. I connected to ITunes and the Ipad screen popped up saying there was an update available. I clicked on the update and it started updating and also there was a message saying it was backing up. But then I got a message to click here to complete the update -- with a restore. I did that and now my IPad is n ot woking at all -- I get the initial startup screen and a message that says "your ipad cannot be activated because the activation server is not available" I've tried connecting to itunes and get the same message -- server not available. The devices menu option is grayed out so I cant sync, backup,, restore nothing.... HELP! please! I only wanted to do a simple update -- now I think I've lost all my pictures and video files -- is there a way to get them back??
Try restarting everything and then try to sync or reactivate. Quit iTunes, reboot your computer, reboot your iPad and then try again.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -
i have been frustrated all day and been going around asking Apple experts about this and it has to my decision to get a new phone since it's out of warranty but I want the images I have on the broken iPhone. Is there any possible way to retrieve it.
Btw, it is not photostreamedAre you sure that the battery is not empty: when the battery is VERY empty (that is when it was on and a long time off the charger) it may take an hour or even more to start charging with the charger connected. When you have an iPad charger you can also use that one, and it charges a bit faster.

My Iphone isn't responding to anything, and I can't do the home/lock button restore becasue my lock button is broken and I've been using assistive touch. Any ideas as to how to turn it back on?
Try plugging it into the charger. Unfortunately, without a functioning sleep/wake button, it will be diffucult to do a number of troubleshooting steps. See if it will start that way. If not, you may need to leave it for a period to see if the battery will die out and then plugging it in may restart it. Otherwise, you will need to take the device to Apple to see about repair/replacement.

Iphone won't turn on, and says 'unknown error 2009' when trying to restore?
this morning my iphone turned off and wouldn't turn on. I plugged it into the charger and it said to connect it to itunes. Once i finally did that, at first it couldnt detect it but now it keeps telling me an iphone has been detected in recovery mode and to sync it I need to restore it.
Here's the problem, everytime i try to restore it, it comes up with something along the lines of, it cannot restore becvause of 'unknown error 2009' and as soon as i unplug the phone it turns off. I can hear (example: can hear screen shot) but I can not see anything on the screen. I have had people call me, and I can hear that, but I can not answer. This all started when I opened a link I had on my phone. After opening the link, the screen turned white. After this, I put my phone to sleep for about 10 seconds. After this it will not turn on. I'm brining it into apple tomorrow, but I am unaware if I am still elligible to get a new phone. The only damage is that the back is cracked. If anyone can answer my question, it would be a big help.
You need to ask the personnel at the Apple Store. Their call is the final call on the matter. Don't go in with false expectations and risk looking like an idiot because of something you were told by strangers on the internet.
