Help! I think I killed my PowerBook...

Yesterday I posted about my computer going on the fritz, but when I got home everything was fine. Well, things went from bad to worse today. Now my computer won't even start up. When I press the power button, I heard the hard drive spinning, actually it's more like a light "grinding" sound - almost as if the fan inside is hitting something - and I get the blue screen. No icon, no startup, nothing.
I had originally thought it was a bad 1GB RAM card that I had installed a few weeks ago because I had taken it out and replaced it with my original 256 card. Things were working fine for a few hours, then it started to slow down again. I was going to reinstall my OS (I had backed up all my info to my iPod) but when I was trying to shut my computer down, it froze up. I pressed the power button for a few seconds to force it to shut down, then the blue screen thing happened. I'm not sure what to do now, I'm posting this on my wife's VAIO so thankfully I have access to help.
I'm currently running OS 10.3.3.
It's imperative that I get my PB up and running by tomorrow 8am or I am sunk! Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Alec,
Well I'm not sure if you have a hardware issue. Try re-installing the 1gig of RAM and reboot to see if you can get back into the system. Usually 3 beeps during startup will alert you to defective RAM. Since you didn't report hearing them maybe the RAM is ok. The missing user login window happened to me twice. I didn't run the Apple hardware test or any other diagnostics as I orginally thought it was an issue with the USB drive I had hanging up during ejection. The second time it occured I found a file in the startup folder for a Lexmark printer (which I deleted then rebooted the system) I was using. At the time I first connected the printer I got an error message stating it's security level wasn't correct. There was a prompt for me to fix, ignore or decide later. I believe at the time I selected decide later which a subsequent message alerted me that by doing so I could encounter problems. All of this is annecdotal at best because I never definitively determined the cause of the issue. It has not reoccured again so far. If you have the opportunity try running the hardware test and post back the results.

  • Thinking about upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB

    I am thinking about upgrading my powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB, or even larger if possible...
    I have checked the macsales.com website and found this seagate 160GB, is it a good choice? Can anyone suggest a better deal or a better choice...?
    but I also notice one thing... it says that any powerbook model prior to 2003 might not support the any hard disk over 120G....
    So I am wondering is my powerbook G4 15inch 1.25GHz SuperDrive model able to have a 160GB hard drive...?
    Thanks a lot!!!!!

    The 1.25Ghz Powerbook came out in fall 2003, so if what MacSales says is true, then it should work.

    Help,
    I think I have Macvx on my iMac late 2012 21.5 running the latest OS.
    I am getting heaps of ads in my web browser.
    I have seen similar question from other people and responses explaining to find and search for it in your applications menu but I can't find anything that relates to it or that was installed recently.
    I have even looking in the library and through spotlight search searching the specific words Macvx and Vidx.
    Please help,
    Thank you very much.

  • 10.4.8 killed my powerbook! Help!! :O

    I went a long time without installing any updates on my powerbook so today I figured I would update to 10.4.8 from 10.4.6 among other things. After it installed, my powerbook restarted like usual and then restarted again but this time spent about 20 minutes on the screen with the apple logo and the little whirling thing underneath.
    I took it to a mac genius who tried some stuff and told me that he could not fix it--that I must do an archive and install otherwise he would charge me for it. I went home and tried to fix permissions first and I got this message:
    -Keys out of order.
    -Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
    -The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
    -Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    -1 HFS volume checked
    -1 volume could not be repaired
    -Repair attempted on 1 volume
    -1 volume could not be repaired...
    Great! So I just resigned myself to doing an archive and install and when I get to the screen to select the destination volume, nothing appears!
    I have not backed up my data either so desperately need to copy the files somehow...
    A simple OS update gone wrong!
    What can I do?

    Glad to help. If you are lucky you'll recover your files. Once that is completed be sure to do the following before reinstalling OS X:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the installation. After you get a successful installation going you can restore your files from the backup.

  • HELP! I think I killed my Mac!

    I have a Mirrored door, 1 ghz dual, G4 that I bought new in 2002. I recently needed to do some upgrades and I think I exceeded it's capacity and fried it!
    I recently upgraded (a month ago) to 2 ghz of ram, added a 20" LCD monitor, and added a 4th internal drive 2 nights ago (500 ghz ATA, joining my 2 old 80 gig drives and a 20 gig drive). The new HD was added in desperation when my external 230 gig drive went down with all my UNbacked up files on it. I was able to getthe drive working again and desperate to get everything on all my drives backed up. Finished backing everything up to the 500 yesterday morning and everything seemed fine... then last night I was reading email and suddenly my screen went blue and wouldn't come back. I restarted and at first the power wouldn't even come on... or the button lighted up and then died out before the start up tone. I thought maybe the power supply couldn't handle the load, so after letting it cool down for a long time, I unhooked 2 of the internal drives... leaving my startup and 500 gig running. This time the power came on, start up sound played and the button stayed light (and I could hear fans), but the monitor stayed black. I turned the monitor on and off and got the little "analog / digital" box in the upper left corner for a couple minutes and it seemed like the screen lightened a tiny but, but then it gave up and went black again.
    Soooo... is my mac dead... the motherboard fried... or could it just be my graphics card? How can I tell?
    I'm in the middle of several huge deadlines and need to resolve this NOW... if it can't be fixed today I need to buy a new Mac immediately, get everything installed and get the deadlines done by Monday even if I work all day and night through the weekend, so I'd really appreciate advice ASAP.
    I have every reason to believe my data is intact... but if I get a new Mac, is there anyway to move my internal drive to the new Mac so I don't have to reinstall all of my software or is that just an exquisite form of suicide?
    If I get a Mac Pro (w/intel processor) will my regular Mac OSX software still work ok? Or Should I go for a G5 machine for convenience?
    HELP!
    G4 dual 1Ghz, Mirrored Door   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Unfortunately this goes to prove why backups should be external, not internal. Neither G5 nor Intel Macs support ATA/IDE drives directly. They use the new SATA technology. However, a Firewire/IDE hard drive case will let you use the old hard drives on a new Mac. The G5 Mac has better support for Mac OS 9 applications, though not as good as a non-Firewire 800 Mirror Dual G4 (the Firewire 800 Dual G4 only could use Classic and couldn't boot Mac OS 9), and the Intel Macs have no support for Mac OS 9 at all. In addition if your applications have no Universal equivalent they may run slower on an Intel Mac than a G5 as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#INTEL
    Macmaps will be down briefly today for an upgrade.
    If once you connect the old hard drives you aren't able to see them on the new machine, you may want to use some of the tools on my backup FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    and directory FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
    In the worst case scenario you may be forced to use a data recovery firm.
    Good luck in retrieving your data!

  • I think I killed my Mac, trying to install XP - Help, please!

    I am at a loss. I cannot boot my computer in OSX, but when I try to boot it will the install disk....it comes to the first screen for what language, but then says OSX cannot be installed on this computer.
    Perhaps it is still on the computer and that is why...but I cannot find it, though I am not that savy with this stuff. I tried holding down the option key and it just lists a windows start up disk...but that is not working as it just recycles trying to install windows xp.
    oh my, I am sick.
    If anyone can help, please let me know!!

    It is common when installing Windows for the install disk to have to reboot the machine to proceed to the next step. People familiar with Windows installation are not thrown by this - but a person new to the task might be confused.
    In Boot Camp this can throw you off because it does not prompt you as to your job in the procedure.
    If you don't do anything your Mac will boot back to OSX and Windows will remain un-finished. Here it is: if you are installing Windows and the machine closes down and re-boots, always hold down the 'option' key (or if you like - the 'c' key) so you can avoid an automatic boot to OSX - choose the 2nd hard drive icon. Windows always wants to boot back to Windows - to finish the job.
    If you want to erase your Boot Camp error - just boot to OSX, open Boot Camp Assistant (found in "Utilities" which is found in the Applications folder) and choose to create one partition. Your OSX install will not be hurt by this.
    If you want to wipe your computer completely (as if factory new) in order to install OSX from scratch then first install your OSX DVD and boot (holding down the option key or else the c key - then select the disk icon) - after language selection wait for the tool bar at the top to appear, select utilities > disk utility and click the hard drive (listed at the top of the list) and then click 'partition'. Then under 'volume scheme' select 'current' and create a 3 or 4 partition (takes a minute) and then undo this and create a one partition. This should blank-out the computer hard drive completely for you to start fresh - all will be erased.
    If your Mac will not boot properly and you happen to have materials on your machine that you MUST save or recover, then you will need different help than I describe here.

  • Please help, I cannot start-up my PowerBook G4 (grey screen, no options)

    Sir/Madam,
    My PowerBook (PB) started misbehaving two weeks ago. It seemed difficult for i to access its drive (repetitive whirring sounds). I made a clone while I could and tried to fix any problems using Disk Utility.
    At first, minor problems were detected so I booted using the clone (on firewire) and tried to repair. Disk Utility reported the drive was fine. I tried Drive Genius, Disk Warrior and Techtool. I rebuilt the directories, and yet when using the drive, the access problems and delays continued. During this whole process, I kept finding that in System Preferences - Startup Disk list, my firewire clone was not detected. I had to boot with the OPT key pressed to use it (this was unusual).
    Anyway after hours of trying to find the fault, I decided to boot from the firewire clone again and completely erase the built in PB drive. After this, I thought, I will do a clean reinstall.
    When the time came to do a reinstall, I found that my PB got stuck on the grey screen. Even if I pressed OPT-C on startup (to reinstall the system from optical) nothing would happen. In fact the only thing that does anything different is when I just press OPT on startup. I then get asked my firmware password and there follows what should be a menu of startup options but is actually blank. My firewire clone is absent from the menu, as is any optical disc that I may have placed (eg Leopard installation or the original system discs that came with my PB). The screen with the curly arrow on the left and the straight arrow on the right remains while a little clock mouse pointer shows time passing. After about 45 seconds, the clock hands stop rotationg and the pointer will not longer move. This remains as long as I have waited (hours)
    I am now at an impasse where I do not know what to do. I am frustrated. I cannot run any hardware tests, I cannot install any system, I cannot get my PB to see my clone and startup. I would appreciate any help.
    Thank you

    Maybe this will be if interest. Hi everyone. First post...
    Anyway, I was updating my 1.5 G4 Powerbook to 10.5.7 and scored the interminable grey screen. No joy from Option, C, Safe Boot, Verbose Mode etc, etc. Ran fsck in Single User Mode and got the all clear from the hard drive. So...
    Off to the Genius Bar in Sydney's new Apple store. Again, all clear on the hard drive, so must be an operating system error.
    Back home, transferred everything I could think of via Target Disk mode and Firewire to the other Mac and re-installed Panther - yep, it's an oldie but a goodie. Then updated. Then upgraded to Tiger. Then updated. Then tried to load Leopard again. No joy. Grey screen, blue screen, spinning beachball, and clicks and whirrs from the DVD drive.
    After about a day of wracking my brains - I may be slow - I checked the About This Mac feature and it hit me. The RAM was 256MB, not the standard 512. Which is a prerequisite for Leopard. And the Diagnostics line said Memory Failure...
    Then I found the faulty RAM slot thread/lawsuit/recall notices... None of which applied to my serial number.
    To cut a long story shorter, either the RAM module or the slot is stuffed. I need to do a bit more diagnosis, but I can see an expensive swap to a MacBook Pro coming up...
    If you're having trouble booting your G4 Powerbook, check it for memory failure. Apparently it's not uncommon. And apologies if this has all be covered before. Hope it helps.

  • Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

    Hello,
    Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
    Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
    I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
    Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Yes. Leopard can damage hardware. See my long-winded post here.
    It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
    Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.
    option-apple-O-F
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
    That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
    I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

    You did get a Pro program. Here is what I would do.
    Panic. Just kidding, it sounds like your already doing
    that. Get a Belkin 7 port POWERED USB hub. This
    will let you plug your keyboard into the laptop and
    will not drain energy off the system. Price about
    40.00 Next download this LSO file here,
    http://storeandserve.com/download/338634/MOTIF%20ES%20Multi%20Logic%20MAC.LSO.ht ml
    This is a Logic song with a Motif ES
    multi instrument object already set up.
    This will allow you to control your ES6 from
    Logic when you want to use it as a sound module.
    What I would do with this is to open your autoload
    song then open this song. When Logic asks you if
    you want to close the first song say no. Then with
    both songs open go into the environment/audio layer
    of each song. In the song I sent you there is a
    multi instrument object called ES. Click on it so
    it is highlighted and use the command "command-x"
    to cut the object out of that environment and go to
    your autoload and using "command-p" paste it into
    the audio layer there. You can now close the song I
    sent you but when Logic asks if you want to save it
    select "dont save". This way if anything goes wrong
    with your autoload not taking the multi, it will still
    be in the other song. Next go here
    http://storeandserve.com/download/338606/LogicMulti.mov.html
    and download this video tutorial on creating a multi
    instrument object for an external synth in Logic.
    this will show you how to hook up your object in
    the environment so it will work. The creating
    part has already been done, you just have to
    hook it up and create the tracks for the 16
    midi channels. I did not do this until I had been
    using Logic almost a year. You are finding
    out what they meant when they said Logic
    has a STEEP learning curve!
    To control Logic with the ES, I believe if it
    is like mine you just hit the remote button
    and wham it is a controller. You can only use
    the board for controlling then, if you need it
    it to do other things you will have to hit the
    remote button again. Well, I hope this will
    help you, remember to install the
    Pro App Support Runtime file in the Apple
    support section if you havent already.
    Set up the ES in the Audio Midi setup
    in the Utilities folder and download the
    latest USB midi driver here
    http://www.yamahasynth.com/download/midi_driver.html
    I think that is everything. I hope this helps
    just post if you need more help.

  • I killed my powerbook

    Late last night my powerbook took about a two-foot fall onto a wooden floor. It turned off, i turned it back on and i got no apple boot chime, after a few seconds i got the apple boot screen, i happily walked off for a glass of water and came back to find a "no entry" sign (what i originally called the 'no smoking' sign without the cigarrette) - i went to the apple store this morning, they plugged in a firewire volume, it booted, my drive was in tact. i went back to the office, plugged the powerbook into a powermac via firewire booted with a "T" option and backed up all my data. I verified the disk in disk utility, it showed two errors, i "repaired" and the errors were gone. I verified again and no errors. Still, a "no entry" sign.
    Back to Apple store, he told me to pop in an OSX disk, boot with "C" and format and re-install. I have a tiger disk which i used, the computer came with 10.3. When i boot with "C" i hear the CD-ROM spin (still no start chime) and it eventually stops spinning and after a minute or so proceeds back to my "no entry".
    When i boot holding "option" it shows the Macintosh HD and the OSX Disc, i tried going to the OSX disc, same thing, CD spins (while showing apple boot screen), eventually stops spinning, then goes to "no entry" sign.
    Please help. Thanks!

    One of two.
    Likely your Hd got damaged / scratched like a old LP player with LP disk.
    Or your Motherboard got some damage around the mounting screw holding it all in place.
    It could be that a connector is not making good contact to your Hard drive.
    If you can connect it to the firewire connection and partition / erase it from the other Mac and then do a normal install using disks "c" if this fails you can or a Apple technician can replace the hard drive as likely it got some damage.
    Also remove all power or reset the Mac with I think shiftaltoption or something like this and then remove all power for 5 minutes and try installing again.

  • Ipod nanos killed by powerbook g4

    I have a powerbook g4 (1.5 GHz running 10.4.11 with itunes 7.5) and I recently purchased an 8GB ipod nano. I synched the ipod with itunes and shortly thereafter the ipod stopped functioning. I exchanged the ipod thinking it was defective but a similar thing happened again. At Best Buy I tried 2 more ipods and In each case, after successfully synching with itunes once, the ipod was more or less incapacitated and could not be synched again. Resetting the ipods did not help and neither the Best Buy geek squad nor the apple help line had any solutions. The only theory put forward is that there is something wrong with my computer's usb ports although I use them regularly without any problem to connect to keyboards, memory sticks, a scanner and a camera. Any suggestions?

    First one is that you post in either the 3rd Generation Nano or Powerbook forums, unless you also have an iPod Touch that is somehow related to this.
    You might try an archive and install on your PB in order to replace the iPoDDriver.kext file.

  • HI there, need help in thinking of a logic.

    Good Day!
    I'm having trouble thinking of the logic in this simple (but tediously hard for me) problem.
    I've got two internal tables, say table A and table B. I need to output records from table A that do not match records from table B. and vice versa.
    The thing is, before I can output them, there are 3 primary keys for each table. let's say, ID, Document, and date. I need to match 3 of them to the other table, and if they don't match I would have to print them out.
    What I did was.
    Loop at TABLEA.
         Loop at TABLEB.
            IF TABLEA-ID NE TABLEB-ID AND ...
            WRITE TABLEA-ID ...
            ENDIF.
         ENDLOOP.
    ENDLOOP.
    The problem is,  let's say table a has
    ID: 0
    Doc:1
    Date: 1
    ID:1:
    DOC:1
    DATE:1
    table b has
    ID:1
    DOC:1

    and so on..
    the loop will first compare table a with b and if it doesn't match well.. it prints it out immediately. Maybe the 1st record of table A is in the 20th record of table B. So I get multiple unmatches. So now I'm turning to the experts here, hope you guys can help.
    I'm not sure if there was a faster way to do this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Help I think my power supply is going bad! Where can I buy parts?

    I am getting random reboots and it doesn't seem to be the OS... My first guess is the power supply but I can't seem to find one to buy... Does anyone know where I can buy one at?  Is there a good place for parts for the MEGA 180?
    Thanks
    Mobile Bob

    you need to post more information about the problem you're having, before we start pointing the finger at the PSU, which is the one part that is difficult to obtain now
    >> Getting help with random restarts and blue-screens <<
    Post more info on the hardware in your Mega PC, refer to >> Moan Guide <<
    Download Speedfan and use it to measure CPU temps both at idle and under load and post them here. >> How to use Speedfan <<
    Test your memory using >> Memtest86 <<
    The thing is that windows never leaves an error... I get nothing in the event viewer except windows was shutdown error no other errors are listed so I don't think it's windows... I ran a CPU Burn in test for over 24 hours and never had a problem so I don't think it's heat either... And the reboots are quite random I will go two weeks without one and then get them two and three times a day...  To me the power supply seems to be the easiest answer but since there hard to get I guess it's not so easy to check eh...
    I have done the fan mod (Turning it so it sucks in cool air) and I have a slot fan dumping tons of air out the back so I don't think it's a heat problem... I started to have the problem running Windows XP SP2 so I did a complete reload from scratch to Windows Vista (I know not completely supported but it works fine) and am still having the same problem...  I have a Haugpauge 150 pci card, Haugpauge USB2, A usbuirt pluged into usb and thats about it...  2 gigs of ram 2x1gig sticks from Crucial,  yes I have already run a memory check and it passed...
    Is there not anywhere to get a power supply?  Or is there another model that fits the mega 180 case?

  • $20 to anyone who can help: (I think) how to send the right cookie info

    Yes, we're so befuddled and stumped that we are willing to pay $25 by Paypal or any other method (check, money order) to the first person who provides us with a concrete solution that allows us to read this page through a Java application:
    http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/subst/your-account/your-open-marketplace-items.html/104-3907538-7794313
    The problem (we think) seems relatively simple: how can we pass the correct cookie to a server? We want to search our merchant web pages on amazon.com (and perform other operations, but for the purposes of this problem, just assume we want to read the above web page). We wrote a variation of a webcrawler which works fine on most web pages. However, the Amazon web pages we want to crawl (i.e., http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/subst/your-account/your-open-marketplace-items.html/104-3907538-7794313) require you to sign in first (otherwise you get redirected to http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/subst/your-account/your-won-zshop-items.html/104-0793551-2976761). So we thought that this meant we had to figure out how to get our webcrawler to login first (we implemented the Java Almanac example for accessing password-protected URLs: http://javaalmanac.com/egs/java.net/Auth.html?l=rel). During the course of testing this out (the code seemed to work, though we still got redirected), we realized that the Amazon web page is not actually performing basic authentication (not asking for username/password), but instead seems (that is, seems to inexperienced us) to be looking for a cookie. We believe this because after we sign in to Amazon, we can access all our merchant web pages just fine without ever needing to log in, even if we turn off the browser (or computer). Also, if we try to access the web page after deleting all cookies, we again get redirected to the page requesting that we sign in.
    So we took a look at the Amazon cookie that was created after we signed in to Amazon (printed below), and then implemented the cookie-passing code from the Java Almanac (http://javaalmanac.com/egs/java.net/SendCookie.html). This seemed to have no effect:we still got redirected. We hunted around for other Cookie examples and found achase1's example from a previous forum question (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=375956), which seemed to add a few HTTPUrlConnection.set's, but this also had no effect--our Java crawler still gets redirected to the page that requests that we sign in first.
    So we think that either we are somehow passing the wrong cookie information, or are just missing some critical HttpURLConnection setting or parameter.
    So, if you can tell us how to read the Amazon page that seems to require a cookie, and your explanation actually works (that is, we can read the page), we will send you $25 immediately--like so many others on the forum, we're frustrated and lost and need an answer that works!
    Here is the Amazon account information (naturally, this is a working dummy account on Amazon, not our actual account, in case you want to test your solution before posting it):

    Here is the extra-simplified version of our webcrawler, which simply tries to read (and print out) the web page:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class PasswordReader {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
    // Try to access the page

         m_urlConn.setDoOutput(true);
         m_urlConn.setDoInput(true);
         m_urlConn.setUseCaches(false);
         m_urlConn.setRequestMethod("POST");
         // optrional
         m_urlConn.setRequestProperty("User-Agent","Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0; H010818)");
         m_urlConn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type","application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
         m_urlConn.setRequestProperty("Cookie" , "session-id=104-3907538-7794313;session-id-time=1055491200;ubid-main=430-1017936-7312154;x-main=Z3yciaQAfpzN?CPFkzeRd8z1U2lWcoap");
         m_urlConn.connect();
    // end cookie code
         BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(
                        new InputStreamReader(
                        url.openStream()));
         String inputLine;
    // Read and print out the web page
         while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null)
         System.out.println(inputLine);
         in.close();
    } catch (MalformedURLException e) {
    } catch (IOException e) {
    Thank so much to anyone who even tries to help us!! We've been poring through the Sun forums, almanacs, and sample code all week without much evident progress. You'd really be making us very, very happy.
