Help icon in the finder

Hi I'm a newbie in the Mac world. I just bought a PB 15'' (Mac OS 10.4 Italian)
I never used a Mac and I come from PC world.
Well my problem is: after I installed Office 2004 for Mac, the "help" in Finder is not working properly. By clicking on the "help" label a blank "help" page is shown; then I need to type my question in the box (top right) and scrolling the list on the second option, which is "search in the whole help", while the first option (checked by default) is a blank line. Moreover the help icon shown in the dock is a Black and White doughnut with a question mark inside. Shouldn't it have red stripes instead of grey?
What can I do to restore the normal and simple working of the help function?
thank you, sorry for my poor english.

Hi, Foucault. I (and many others) have also had problems with Mac OS Help.
Try this site for some good tips. I recall something on that page worked for me.
You correctly describe the Help icon, by the way, no red stripes. I think it's meant to be a lifebuoy basically - the sort of thing that is thrown to someone having difficulties in the sea.
And your English is fine!

  • How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Were transferred when I set up laptop from my desktop computer.  Tried dragging off but that didn't work.

How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Transferred info from my Mac Pro desktop computer (using target mode) and there were folder icons on the Mac Pro Finder sidebar that are now on the MacBook Finder sidebar, even though these folders do not exist on the MacBook.  Tried to drag them off, which is the usual way to get rid of folders that the user adds to the sidebar (as opposed to those that can be added via the Customize Toolbar dropdown menu) but was unsuccessful.  I then unchecked all of the Customize Toolbar menu items and the folder icons still remained.  What else can I do?

Did you hold the Command (Apple) key while dragging them off the sidebar? That usually makes them go *poof*.

  • HT2470 i have just purchased a mac. i can't find my music icon nor my picture icon in the finder folder how do i get them

i have just purchased a mac. i can't find my music icon nor my picture icon in the finder folder how do i get them.

Not sure exactly what you mean by your, "finder folder."
However, in your Finder's preferences, under Sidebar, do you have Music and Pictures checked off?

  • Please help, I broke the Finder

I think I broke the Finder. I was trying to transfer some photos as my disk space was running low and I was trying to clean up and back up stuff so I could install Leopard. I had a bunch of photos I was trying to drag and drop from one folder on the desktop to another. My hand slipped and suddenly it said that it was copying the 1700+ photos to the desktop. Then my finder had a breakdown. Spinning beachball, had to force quit the finder, then had to push button because nothing was happening. When the computer came back up my dock was there with some apps still on it, but the hd icon, some folders and the ext. hd icon were gone. Finder would not work, could not open a new finder window. I unplugged hd manually, and got told that was bad, which I knew but if it had no icon on my desktop, I could not eject it.
Anyway, I ran disk utility (it is in my dock). It sees nothing wrong. I was going to run it from the install disk, but when I put a cd or dvd in the drive it does not show. The finder toolbar (or whatever it is called--File, Edit, View, Window, Help--at the top of the screen does not function. Trying to get a pull down menu results in more spinning beach ball. Apple menu seldom works.
I have turned the computer off twice with button, and unplugged it for a few minutes after one of those times.
I am at my wit's end. Is there any help? Closest apple store is 70 miles away, so if there is something I can do, I need to.
    Thanks in advance.

You want to run Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk. Reboot from it, select your language, and once the menu bar appears go to it and select Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk function. If everything passes, fine. If it finds something to repair, run it again until the disk is reported fine. If it finds something it CAN NOT repair you'll have to invest in a specialized repair utility, Disk Warrior is one that many people recommend.
The hardware check is specific to each machine. To run that you would need to use the disks that came with the computer. The exact way to do it depends on the machine. There should be instructions on how to do it in the documentation that came with your computer. If you can't find that, do a search here on the Apple site for the appropriate computer.
I doubt you have a hardware problem, but wouldn't be at all surprised if Disk Utility finds something that needs repair in the directory structure. If it does, and is able to repair the damage, then you're fine. When you boot up normally into Tiger, launch Disk Utility again from the Utilities folder, and this time run Repair Permissions. You should then be set.

  • How do I view only the desktop with icons and the finder?

I have a hot corner set up to show the desktop.. in Snow Leopard when I exposed the desktop and then clicked on the finder in the dock *just* the finder would show.
Now, with Lion, when I click on the finder it comes into view but all the other open applications come sweeping back in hiding the desktop.
Can I change this back to the way it was before? Or is there another sneaky quick way to show only the desktop and the finder? Set up an entirely different "desktop" in mission control dedicated only to having nothing open in it?
In short: I need a fast way to drag icons from the desktop into folders in the finder. Also, this is driving me nuts.
thanks to anyone who can help.

If you can see a patch of Desktop, with a program (any program other than Finder) window active, hold down both Option and Command and click that patch of Desktop. This will auto-hide all windows for all other programs and switch focus to the Finder/Desktop at the same time.
This works when going from any active program to another, except that the Desktop itself will not get hidden (open Finder folders will get hidden).
To bring a program's windows back to visible status, just click the program's icon in the Dock. For open Finder windows which are hidden, just click the Desktop (plain click).
If you want to hide the windows of just one program, with it the active program hold down just the Option key and click in the window of another program (the Desktop or a folder window counts for this purpose). All windows of the original program will be hidden, and focus will switch to the second program.

  • I don't have any color in my icons in the finder

I don't have any color in my application icons in finder.

Go to the link below, download and install the program. Please read the instructions on the page.
    http://culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
Then go to the link below, download and extract the program. Put the program in the plugins folder created above.
    http://cooviewerzoom.web.fc2.com/colorfulsidebar.html
Force quit Finder and when you open a new Finder window, you should have color in the sidebar, although not across the top. You will need to Force quit Finder and open a new window after almost all restarts and startups.
    Not perfect, but it works.
As an alternative, you can go to the link below and download the program. In the Lion Tweaks section, there is a tweak to restore color in the Finder sidebar, but I haven't tried it, so I don't know if it works.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using Custom Icons - Changing the Finder Icon

So I know you can just do a simple copy and paste under "get info" in order to change icons for applications and folders, but how do you do this for Finder? I know this is possible, if not for the simplest reason that one of the downloads that Apple has featured on this site for icons has a Finder icon (bad logic I know, but it seems odd that Finder would be the only icon you couldn't change). The problem is, how do you "Get Info" on Finder? Where would you find finder (no pun intended)?
    Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the help in finding the icon, the only problem is that it won't let me alter it. I even changed permissions on the bottom of the "get info" screen to allow the current user (also the administrator) to both read and write, but it wouldn't let me paste a different styled icon over it. Any suggestions on how to change the Finder icon to a custom one? And ya we were thinking about how we would change it back too, but realized its not really that big of an issue because all our friends and even we have multiple macs, so we could always just copy it back that way.

  • My Imac won't read an external hard disk. No icon in the finder. It's visible in the disk uitility. NTSF format

    Hi!
Every time I connect my hard disk, I get this message:
The hard disk is in NTFS format.
So far I've connected  3 different hard disks, and I always get the same message. I also have a mac laptop and I can see all of them in the finder and read and save stuf in them, too.
I've contacted Apple support and they've told me it's a problem from the hard disk and I should format it into the Exfat Format, and see if it works and the imac can read it.
I don't really want to delete all the stuff I have in the hard disk.
How can I find out if there's a problem with the computer or if it is a problem with the hard disk? Is there an app I can use that might help? Shall I format it into Exfat?
I'd be grateful if anybody can help,
    Thanks!!!

    Then you haven't removed it.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • How do I remove the hidden file icons from the Finder folder?

I recently had problems with Final Cut Pro and had to remove QuicktimeX and use Pacifist to re-install QuicktimeX back into the Applications folder.
I now have "hidden icons" that are lightly grayed out in the Finder folder. I was told by the Apple Genious leave them alone until you know the correct way of removing them from the folders because they play an important role in the system folder.
Can someone advise me on how to make them go away again?

LOL! Sorry Niel, I 'm just a beginner when it comes to more the double clicking on the Mac. I just had to laugh at myself after reading your response. I should have been in a Three Stooges movie....
Thank you, it worked and I saved it just in case one of my friends have the same problem. I will fix it for them then claim to be a Mac Genius.

  • Can't right-click on icons in the Finder...

...suddenly. When I right-click on a Word doc (or any file), instead of an option menu appearing, the Finder seems to reset itself and open up the main window of my harddrive. I can right-click in other applications - and I tested multiple mice to see if that was an issue (it wasn't). I deleted my finder plist file in Library, and all that - no success.
Please, please, PLEASE don't tell me I need to reinstall my entire system (again).
    Help!

You need to re-install your ENTIRE SYSTEM!
    (Just kidding
It could be an item in /library/contextual menu items. Drag the contents of that folder to the desktop and test again. If that sorts it put the items back one at a time to find the culprit..
If that's not it, navigate to ~(yourhome)/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Finder.crash.log open it and paste the contents here for the latest Finder crash and maybe we can figure what's going on.

  • Seeing pictures as icons in the finder

When I look at jpeg photos in my finder to see which ones I want to add to iphoto, some of them have the actual picture as an icon and some just have the "preview" icon. How do I have them all have the actual picture as an icon so I dont have to open each one of them to see them?

Were all photos taken by and imported from the same camera?
You must have the Finder view "as Icons".
Change it to "as Columns" and regardless if the icon includes a preview, you will see a larger preview of the selected file in the adjacent column.

  • Can I turn off certain classes of icons in the finder.

In general I like the 10.5 idea of making the icons for files be a preview of their contents, but there are some, like pdf or doc (sorry) files where I can actually visually process them much easier if they retained their old style generic icon.
Is there any default I could set with the Finder that would enable me to keep all files of a given file type generic?

    Bill:
I agree with your comment; it's Excel spreadsheets that are the problem for me -- I have a bunch of text files from a database in a directory with the converted Excel versions. It would be easier for me if the Excel files still had their old icons so I could tell them from the text files.
However, I think you might have better luck if this was in another forum; the UNIX forum doesn't seem like the right place for it. (I stumbled onto this message while looking for some advice on using Terminal.)

  • Hide "Users Shared Drive" and "Network Icon" on the Finder

Is there a way to Hide the Blue Highlighted Icons or Make it invisible on Finder. Thanks for the help...

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop and uncheck the 'Connected Servers' option.
Alternatively, if you want to leave other servers showing, you can manually mount the volume at any other point, bypassing the /Volumes directory:
    mount smb://server/sharename /some/other/mount
This should mount the share at the path /some/other/mount rather than at the default /Volumes/sharename
