HELP!!! iMac drive slot jammed.

The CD drive slot on my G3 imac is not the only thing stuck. I am, too.
Where the heck is the emergency paper clip hole for forcing the drive to eject my disk?
I've been sitting in front of my computer . . . off and on for hours . . . paper clip in hand, but still can't figure out where it has gone or what else I can do to retrieve the disk, which unfortunately, does not belong to me.
I probably have enough vacant space on my hard drive to copy and save the data if necesssary, but still won't be able to burn it onto a new disk unless I can get the drive to eject the disk that's in there now.
By the way, although I'll confess I'm a packrat, the original manual (if there was one) has disappeared — which leads me to believe hard copy never existed and probably was only available online. But the one illustration I found that showed the front of the computer with a hole did not match my iMac, which must be at least 4-5 years old, and according to the Apple Profiler is machine model 33.11.
Can anyone help me? . . . PLEASE?
Thanks.

You've raised some interesting points, which, frankly I had never given any thought to before.
For one thing, it's possible that my husband COULD still access the net if my computer were in for service. That he would not be able to was just an assumption on my part; but thinking about it now, his reception seems to depend mainly on the position of the router's antenna. Perhaps because of the distance and other interference . . . even slight movement of the router sometimes causes problems for him. But even when I can't access the net, he usually is still able to. Anyway, checking that should be easy enough. While I'm sure he wouldn't care, I don't like messing with his computer in his absence, but when he returns, I'll shut down mine and see if he can still access the net. If so, it will not only rule out any any interruption of service if I send the iMac in for repair, but perhaps also my excuse for treating myself to a new one. (Even so, now that I'm revved up, upgrading my equipment immediately (instead of waiting for a more serious emergency) still makes sense.)
As for the initial hook-up, either I misunderstood the installation procedure or did not explain it correctly. The installation was done by Time/Warner, which also provided the router. As I recall, because of the layout of our home and the possibility of stuctrual interference, they felt a wireless network was the best solution. As I understood it, that would have required an ethernet card for my husband's PC. Since all my equipment (multiple computers, printers, etc.) were already networked via ethernet, it probably made sense to set things up the way they did. For that reason, my computer is hard-wired to the router, which also sends a wireless signal to my husband's PC.
My thought re: AOL was based on my assumption that the disk they sent me was just for dial-up service, since that's all they were offering in our area before their recent hook-up with Time/Warner. I've never opened the package, so really don't know what the promotion consists of.
As for re-establishing the PCs connection, that's the one area where my husband and I run out of steam. I guess my fascination with understanding WHY things go wrong has made me a reasonably good troubleshooter with respect to my Mac, but I know zip about PCs. He, on the other hand, has no patience and would rather pick-up the phone and call the nearest freelance technician to solve even the smallest problem.
As for the airport card, unfortunately I don't have that . . . although I believe the iBook I bought a couple of years ago (but have only used once or twice) either came with one or was ready to have one installed. I suppse I should at least pull it out and find out what other goodies it has. I know they definitely include a CD drive.
Hmmm . . . if I can connect it to my network, it might be useful.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

    Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
    I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
    It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5

  • How do I install Bootcamp on 2nd internal iMac drive?

    Have a new iMac with a 1TB internal HD in addition to the SSD startup drive.
    Can I, and if so how do I, install Bootcamp on the 1TB internal HD? Will the Bootcamp Assistant point out the 2nd internal drive and proper location during the install process?
    I purchased this iMac w/wireless keyboard, mouse, and trackpad...is that going to be a problem during the Windows install?
    Thanks,
    David

    Bootcamp actually gave me an option to install on the 2nd internal iMac drive and it's working like a champ!
    Thinking I was relegated to a Bootcamp partition on my SSD startup drive, I went ahead and delved into the Bootcamp install, only to find an option to install on either my SSD startup drive or my 2nd internal iMac drive. I simply chose the 2nd drive and lo, and behold, as I hold the Option button down on startup, both of my operating systems (OS X and Windows) available for selection.
    Thanks for all the help, but it looks as though the latest edition of Bootcamp has addressed this issue, I am quite pleased.

  • IMac vertical slot scratching discs?

    Lately, after installing software on dvds, I have noticed that the discs have become scratched, in some cases scratched so badly that they are useless. Could it be that the iMac vertical slot exposes the disks to damage from contact with the aluminum shell or some internal parts? I didn't check the discs before I inserted them, but they were fresh out of their square white envelopes. Anybody else had this problem? My solution was to re-employ an old LaCie external optical drive with the usual horizontal plastic tray. No scratches thereafter.

    I'll keep it in mind. Mine doesn't make any noise yet, but I have Applecare too. I found after I started this thread that there are already a few on this subject in the forum, so It's a systematic problem and hasn't been corrected yet. It could probably be fixed with a deburring tool and some high-number emery cloth; far be it from Apple to do that for us.

  • Trouble with my DVD/CD drive/slot.

    I am having some trouble with my DVD/CD drive/slot. It will not accept any CD's or DVD's that I have tried to insert. I have tried restarting the computer and updating software. Does anyone have any ideas that may help? Thanks

    try doing a SMC reset and see if that makes your CD/DVD work again.
    if that doesn't work, try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    if not, make an appointment with apple to have them look at it.

  • Moving contents of FCE scratch disc to external Drive from an iMac Drive

    Is there a way of moving the captured HDV video in the Scratch Disc for a project from an iMac hard drive to an external drive if the initial capture placed it in the iMac drive.
    FCE captured my original HDV on my iMac in the FCE Document folder. I thought I had specified my external Glyph drive for the captured video but discovered after editing and saving the project to the external GLYPH that the original capture was in the FCE document folder on the iMac --where I did not want it. The project is saved on the external GLYPH. Is there a way of moving the Scratch Disc (original captured video) for this project from the iMac Hard drive to the Glyph drive (in other words, after the initial capture) without screwing up the editing I have already done.
    I had created a "Media" folder on the external drive for all media to be used in this project before capturing the video but the Easy set up did not give me a scratch option and placed it in the default (iMac) drive.
    This is my first time trying out FCE. Help would be appreciated.

    Is there a way of moving the captured HDV video in the Scratch Disc for a project from an iMac hard drive to an external drive if the initial capture placed it in the iMac drive.
    Yes, just copy the files to the folder(s) you want them to be in.
    I normally capture to my internal drive (Final Cut Express Documents > Capture Scratch folder.) After capturing, I copy the clips to a folder on one of my external drives; usually give the folder the name of the shoot. That's my simple way of organizing clips on my hard drives; and it makes backing up easier too.
    After you copy the clips, you should delete the clips from their original location (I assume that is your Capture Scratch folder on your system HD). Be sure to Empty the Trash. Very important - make sure you have successfully copied all your clips to the external drive; once you empty trash, the originals are gone.
    When you open your project file the next time, all your clips will be offline and you will have to go through the Reconnect Media process to re-associate your clips with your project. After successfully reconnecting media, Save your project and all should be fine.
    I highly recommend reading the sections of the manual (online help) about scratch disk locations; and reconnecting media.
    but the Easy set up did not give me a scratch option and placed it in the default (iMac) drive.
    Scratch locations are not part of Easy Setups. You set your scratch disk location in FCE > System Settings.

    will Mac OS X Snow Leopard INSTALL on a IMAc g3 slot lOADER?

    That's what we needed.
    Officially your iMac--known as a "tray-loader" for its optical drive type--can go to Panther (10.3.X). Panther is quite better than Jaguar (10.2.8) that you now have. You probably need more RAM than 160MB for even Jaguar. I feel that 384MB is about min for that OS.
    The big problem is that the early iMacs came with painfully small hard drives --4 to 6 G--and OSX need a lot of free space on the disk for efficient performance. It's hard to keep a Jaguar system under 2G with a few useful apps installed.
    Bottom line: you'll spent money for a hard-to-find retail OS install disk, more RAM, and a bigger hard drive, and you'll still have a slow computer that will always struggle with modern web pages. If you want to upgrade and experiment as a hobby or learnign experience and you can afford the parts and time, by all means--go for it. However, if cost is an issue, throwing money at this unit is not cost-effective in terms of how much more yo ucan get from it.

    Welcome to the Communities.
    We want to help you but unfortunately you have given us insufficient information.
    Please find a moment to tell us more about your machine, the model identifier, the OS version, and the total amount of RAM you have.   It also helps to know where you are, nothing specific, just the country.   Macs do not run on iOS 6.1.6 as your profile says.
    Then fill those same details in your profile for future use

    IMac 350 slot loader: Display VERY VERY DARK. I have a slot loader 350 imac. The display is so dark its unusable until night time when I came make out most of the desktop. I have OS X installed, 9.2.2 installed and upgraded the firmware. I also replaced the RAM and tried booting from a CD. Nothing helps. The iMac works but is very dark. The Monitor control panel is set at max contrast and brightness set to max now, too. No relief. Any ideas? It must be hardware at this point.

    I'm wrong. It's the sign of a dying CRT. You can have a look at this possible repair.

  • Time Machine for Partitioned iMac Drive - Wireless Backup w/o TIme Capsule

    Hi all, does anyone think it is possible to set up a Time Capsule type backup on a large iMac hard drive. my household has one iMac and two mac books. I would like to partition a portion of my 1TB imac drive and wirelessly back up the mac books on this drive via time machine just like it would for Time Capsule. The home network is fully functional so it seems like this should be possible since I can already move files around on the macs. I guess I could just get a time capsule but this seemed possible and way cheaper. anyone have any ideas?

    That should work. See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • How can I store iPhoto files on an external hard drive rather than on the iMac drive

    How can I store my iPhoto library on an external hard drive rather than the iMac drive to make my computer faster?

    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Cloned iMac drive onto a new macbook???

    hey all,
    I am converting our family pc from an intel 20" iMac to a new 2.4ghz macbook. I have a current copy of my iMac drive made by CCC onto a firewire drive. I was going to just boot off that drive on my new macbook then clone the drive onto the macbook drive. I was already running the latest verizon of 10.5 and iLife. And reasons this would be a bad idea??
    Thanks!
    Tony

    Don't know what to tell you, if I choose about this mac, and click where it says version, I get Build 9C7010.. I did what you said, ran it off the firewire drive for a while everything seemed fine, so I went ahead and cloned the drive. So far so good..

  • I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a

    I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a all-in-one
    Product: D110a all-in-one
    OS: Windows XP Professional
    Error messages: None
    Changes before problem appeared: None--new installation
    The quality of photo images (mostly JPG files) in printouts is awful even though the files display beautifully on the PC screen. I am using
    IrfanView software for displaying/printing. As far as I can tell, IrfanView is not the problem.
    When I print the same images on a Deskjet 5150 attached to a different PC also running XP Pro and IrfanView, the quality of the printouts is at
    least acceptable, Some would probably say good or very good.
    It's dificult to explain in words the problem with the printouts. A picture of really pretty vegetables (squashes, tomatoes, watermelon, etc) comes
    out much too red. Moreover, the red, which appears shaded on the screen, seems to be all one shade in the D110a printouts.
    Something similar happens to a view of a huge tree in full leaf. On screen, there are subtle variations in the "greenness" of the leaves. In the
    printout, all green is the same shade. In the same printout, the trunk of the tree is all a single shade of grey. It isn;t even obvious that the
    trunk is a round, solid object.
    I liken the effect to audio that disappears entirely when you lower the volume and gets clipped into square waves in even moderately loud passages.
    I don't know whether the D110a driver software permits adjusting the parameters that appear to be set incorrectly, and if adjustments are possible,
    how I would identify which parameters to adjust, how I would access them, or how I would adjust them. I'm hoping that someone can help. Thanks.
    I forgot to mention that I have used the diagnostic application and it tells me that there are no problems.

    Hi everyone,
    I noticed the following message when network starts on my gateway
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated.
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    Then I realized the way network settings should be written in rc.conf has changed. But I can't figure out how this should be done.
    Currently, my set up is the following (old way):
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="eth1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    eth0 is on DHCP because the IP is dynamically assigned my ISP.
    eth1 has a fix IP because it's on the LAN side.
    No problem to use DHCP on eth0 with the new settings.
    But for eth1, I don't know what I am supposed to write for gateway.
    Wiki isn't clear on that one either, and it looks like many articles still refer to the old way.
    Any guidance appreciated, thanks.
    brazzmonkey,
    you can't define 2 interfaces the old way (even though I saw some tricky workaround somewhere in the forums).
    Use, f.e., netcfg:
    Comment your old lines.
    In /etc/rc.conf insert:
    NETWORKS=(Eth0-dhcp Eth1-static)
    DAEMONS=(..... !network @net-profiles ....)
    In /etc/network.d create 2 files:
    First one is named  Eth0-dhcp.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION="ethernet"
    DESCRIPTION="Whatever text"
    INTERFACE=eth0
    HOSTNAME="your hostname"
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=15
    Second one is named Eth1-static.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='whatver'
    INTERFACE='eth1'
    HOSTNAME='hname'
    IP='static'
    ADDR='192.168.0.10'
    GATEWAY='192.168.0.1' # your gateway IP
    DNS=('192.168.0.1') # your DNS server
    The names Eth0-dhcp and Eth1-static are not magic. They just must be the same in rc.conf and in /etc/network.d.
    Hope it helps.

    PS: netcfg must be installed.
