Help: Install Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 on Mid-2010 Mac Mini, then update?

I just purchased a Mid-2010 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Client 10.6.3 (the new ones just released) with the idea of installing my copy of Snow Leopard Client on it and using it as both a network server and media server.
I own Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 (the initial DVD release) and was thinking I could do a fresh install and update to 10.6.4 on the Mini without problem, but that didn't work. I also tried doing a Target Disk Install to the Mini using my MacbookPro, but the installer choked at the Machine Checksum saying MBPs weren't supported to run the installer.
So, that blows both of my previously known installation options. I was wondering if anyone else with the new Mini and Snow Leopard Server had any suggestions on how to get my current version of Snow Leopard Server (10.6.0) installed on the Mini and then run system updates to get it to boot properly.

It is pretty clear that my installation disk is too old, hence looking for options and suggestions.
In years past with previous versions of Server, there was a way to install an outdated install disk (a point release or 3 behind) and then run the necessary installation updates...either through target disk mode or on to a separate boot disc.
So, with my 10.6.0 Server Install disc, I am not able to do so in either scenario because a) My other admin machine is a MB Pro and the installer performs a hardware checksome preventing install...so no Target Disk Mode, and B) Install on other disc from mini, again Hardware checksome since hardware not recognized.
I am looking at options to enable an install with my disk short of having to physically walk into Apple (a huge trek) and get a new install disk or ask Apple Support to mail one.
So, again... Any options from OS X Server Admins out there?

are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
is all.

Need help installing Snow Leopard.

Need help installing Snow Leopard on a 2009 iMac. Hard drive is only choice for location and message says hard drive can't be used because it is used for Time Machine backups. Ultimate goal is to upgrade to OS 10.6.8.

Check to see if you have a file called backup.backupdb
If you do that means at some time in the past Time Machine was configure to backup to that drive
If that is not where you want your backup to to go, and it should not be stored there any way, then delete it and the install should work then.

You need to purchase the upgrade disk (it is a DVD). Then just put it in and run the installer. When it was first released it was $29 USD, do not know if the price has changed or not.
The usual precautions about backing up your data apply. In fact I would recommend either making a Disk Image of your current boot drive or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to an external drive. I upgraded 5 machines from Leopard to Snow Leopard without any issues, but better to be safe than sorry.

Can I install Snow leopard server on the new Mac Mini Lion server?

Hi guys, I purchased a Lion Server and I am wondering if its possible to install Snow Leopard server on it.
I have the Snow Leopard Server install discs and everything , just wondering if there is any thing I should take note of, I personally prefer SLS over Lion.

Install Windows 7 on a Mid 2010 Mac mini using USB or SD media?

Is is possible to install Windows 7 on a Mid 2010 Mac mini using USB or SD media? I have not figured this out. Here's what I have observed:
I can install OS X Lion using USB or SD media. Both are detected in the boot menu, and will boot.
An SD card with Windows 7 installation files formatted MBR/FAT32 using diskpart appears (with an SD card icon) in the boot menu but when selected as a boot device, the boot fails and the existing OS X instance on the Macintosh HD starts. A USB stick formatted as described does not appear in th boot menu at all.
An SD card or a USB stick formatted as described will boot on a Mid 2011 MacBook Air, and can be used to install Windows 7.
Is this due to EFI differences between a Mid 2010 Mac mini and a Mid 2011 MacBook Air?

The Mac Mini Mid 2010 has a DVD player built in, you can startup and install from a Windows 7 DVD. The Mac Mini Mid 2011 does not have a DVD player built in. I am happy that in new computers I can make use of an USB-stick to install Windows 7. Windows 7 uses MBR and Mac OS X uses EFI and that is why it was not possible on a Mac Mini Mid 2010. I think the EFI on a Mac Mini Mid 2011 is different.
I should like a firmware update on my Mac Mini Mid 2010 if possible. In that case I could choose between DVD or USB stick if I want to install Windows 7.
I also have a FireWire CF Card Reader. I think it is not possible to install Windows 7 via FireWire too.
I do have an external USB HD with 2 partitions: Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Windows 7, but is is not possible to start up Windows 7 from the external HD. It is possible to start up Mac OS X 10.6.8 from the external HD on a Mac Mini Mid 2010.

Installing Snow Leopard Server From a USB Sticki

In my job, I install Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server three or four times a day.
With Snow Leopard, I've found it easiest to install from a USB stick. So, I did a restore from a DVD to a USB in Disk Utility and it's worked great.
With Snow Leopard Server, it is not so simple. When trying to install from a USB stick, I get "Mac OS X 10.6 Server Cannot Be Installed To This Machine." Though strangely, installing from the DVD is no problem.
I've tried to restore straight from the DVD to the USB. I've also tried to install from the DVD to a disk image to the USB. Both times, the USB will mount fine, but I get that error message.
Am I missing a trick here?

Oddly enough it is working for me. I had some issues initially so I went out and bought ONE 16GB thumb-drive (major vendor) and partitioned into two partitions.
I restored one of the partitions with 10.6 and restored the other with 10.6 server. Works flawlessly for me though I do like netinstall. It is a bit slower than the FW800 drive though I do not have to carry around a power brick.

Help! I have a 10.8 macbook, purchased Parallels 9 and Snow Leopard Server to create virtual environment for old ppc software (namely final cut pro 6), but the SLS installation halts saying not enough free RAM, but laptop meets min 2gb requirements... Does anyone know how to solve?

Final Cut Pro 6, which is a component of Final Cut Studio 2, is not a PowerPC application; it was written for Intel Macs and should run fine in 10.8, Mt. Lion.
The problem is that there is a "bug" in the installer application that triggers the "PowerPC" dialog box when attempting to install FCP 6 into a Mac running Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks.
If the MacBook is old enough to run Snow Leopard, one solution is to partition your hard drive, or add an external one, and install Snow Leopard on it. Then use the "dual-boot" method to run either Snow Leopard or Mt. Lion on your MacBook. When running Snow Leopard, you can then install FCP 6 and run it.
In theory, once you have successfully installed FCP 6 into Snow Leopard, you could then upgrade this partition to Mt. Lion as well, and it should continue to run.

Installing Snow Leopard server (10.6.0) over Snow Leopard 10.6.2

I need to convert my Mac Pro to run Snow Leopard Server. I have the DVDs.
The installer tells me I cannot perform the upgrade because the OS on the machine
is more recent than the one on the DVD. I guess I have to downgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.0
before I can install the server OS. I do not want to reformat my hard disk, because I want to
keep the data there. How can I accomplish what I want to do.

assuming your mac pro did not come with 10.6.2 preinstalled you can reinstall 10.6.0 on it in the usual manner. boot from the snow leopard 10.6.0 install dvd (insert the dvd, reboot and hold "c" at the chime). and follow the instructions. this will preserve your data and applications. but as with any system install you should have a full backup before doing it.

Install Snow Leopard Server Software on non server version mac mini (2009)

Recently purchased Snow Leopard Server software to install on a early 2009 mac mini (non server version) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My goal is to set up and manage a server for a small group and leverage some of services from snow leopard server.
First of all, can server software be installed on a early 2009 mac min configured with Mac OS X Snow Leopard? This 2GHz Intel Core Duo mac mini has 2GB Ram and 120GB HD. Will the server software install remove the current snow leopard software or is there any special steps I need to take to get the server version software loaded on this mac mini. Any suggestions or advise is greatly appreciated.

Yes you can install it on your mini And Yes it will wipe the mini clean with a fresh install of the server software.

If you have a Mac Pro desktop system running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 you can Clone the Macintosh HD partition to an external drive and then Boot your mac notebook from that external and then Clone the internal drive of the notebook from that external.
The only thing I would do before starting this process is to run the 10.6.8 Combo update on the Mac Pro desktop system to make sure all the proper drivers are installed so it will run on the Mac notebook you have.
The Combo updater loads all drivers for all model Mac computers that version of OS X can run on. The Software Update version of the 10.6.8 update only loads/installs drivers for the specific Mac computer model it is being installed on.
You can download that Combo updater from the Apple Support Download website.

My roomate has a Windows 7 laptop, and I see here that I can put my DVD into his DVD player, and remote it over our wireless and install it to my laptop.
I've run through the instructions but I can't see Remote Disc under the Mac's finder.
I've made sure to run the following commands in my Mac console too but no luck:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
Is it possible to even do a remote install via one Windows 7 Laptop and my MacBook Pro with no optical drive? Do I have some other kind of options to get this upgrade working?

That's actally a pretty good and cost effective way to do it. I see some from Walmart for like $30, and it's possible to refund them if it doesn't work.

I am currently trying to upgrade the OS on my old MacBook to the latest version it can handle. It appears OS X 7 (Lion) is the most I can upgrade it to.
Apologies if this gets confusing or long winded...
I also have a Mac Mini which is running the latest OS, and purchased Lion a few years back. I was hoping to use that purchase on my MacBook, which is currently running Version 10.5.8. I was told by Apple I need to first upgrade to Snow Leopard to download the App Store on it before I can install Lion.
After inserting the Snow Leopard installation discs (that came with my Mac Mini) in the MacBook, I hit a road block.
I received a prompt telling me "Mac OS X Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer".
I checked the minimum requirements which it appears to meet...
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB Memory (RAM), 35GB of disk space available. After speaking with the Apple technical support they suggested the problem may lay with my Graphics card which is an Intel GMA 950. Have looked around online, this doesn't seem to be an issue or have stopped others who made the upgrade.
Is there any workaround this, without having to replace the internal components? I'd greatly appreciate any help, as I would like to use my MacBook when I go on holiday next week. Thanks.

That seems a bit long winded and not a certain option that will work. Not to mention I have to pay £14.99 and wait 1-2 business days for it to be dispatched when I have already paid for and purchased Lion, a version that is compatible with my MacBook. Is there no other option to install it without having to pay and install the previous OS before it?
