Help installing Snow Leopard without DVD drive

Hi all,
I've seen this question posted before but the solutions are not working for me.
I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11.  I bought the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Install DVD from Apple but my DVD reader just keeps ejecting it, lens must have died.
My roomate has a Windows 7 laptop, and I see here that I can put my DVD into his DVD player, and remote it over our wireless and install it to my laptop.
I've run through the instructions but I can't see Remote Disc under the Mac's finder.
I've made sure to run the following commands in my Mac console too but no luck:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
Is it possible to even do a remote install via one Windows 7 Laptop and my MacBook Pro with no optical drive?  Do I have some other kind of options to get this upgrade working?
Any and all help will be appreciated!

What solutions have you tried other than the one you already mentioned?
Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

That's actally a pretty good and cost effective way to do it.  I see some from Walmart for like $30, and it's possible to refund them if it doesn't work.
    Thank you

  • Need help in installing Snow Leopard without DVD drive

    Hi,
I have a White Macbook 2008 model with 2.1 ghz processor and 1 GB Ram. The dvd rom is not working in my machine. It spits out the dvd's 99 out of 100 times.
I need to upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6. Apple has sent me a single disk to install snow leopard.
I am not willing to invest in new dvd drive either internal or external. Needed help on ways to install snow leopard please apart from using the dvd option.
I do have a Firewire 400 cable but i do not know anybody anymore who has a mac machine with 400 port.
Hence the cable is also useless and i cannot connect to anyother macbook and do the install using their drive.
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Rahul

There are no direct options. Find a friend with a Mac that has a working optical drive. Buy an 8GB USB flash drive. Partition and format it for the Mac then clone the mounted DVD to the flash drive. Take it back to your computer and boot from the flash drive.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon for the flash drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Install Snow Leopard without dvd, without another Mac

    Hi,
I have a macbook (intel core 2 ) with OS X 10.5.8 and i want to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) but my dvd drive is dead. I do have access to a Mac Book Air with the latest OS.but no dvd-drive.
I have the Snow leopard DVD in hand and i have tried to install it from the dvd-drive of my pc but it didnt work. The instructions seems to be for MacBook Air.
Do you have any suggestion other than buy an external dvd-drive ?   I did not use dvd for years, external usb drives are more suitables for my needs..
    Thank you,

    Kurt Lang wrote:
With OS leopard i will be able to upgrade to newer OS without any optical drive so I won't need the optical drive no more after that install !
And you're going to ignore the important point I made?
Plus it would be needed by whoever uses the older Mac to reinstall the OS
Whoever has that older Mac may at some point, need to reinstall the OS. Since you have no intention of replacing the broken internal drive, they will need the external drive to do that from either the original 10.5.x Leopard disks, or the 10.6.x Snow Leopard disk. You can't install the OS on any computer and presume you are done with it from then until eternity.
I still fill my gas tank without having to buy a new reservoir cap.
So you're going to ignore the incredibly obvious, and completely spelled out point I made that things wear out. Yup, great comeback.
About the incredibely obvious , why ignore the main question ?
"Do you have any suggestion other than buy an external dvd-drive ?   I did not use dvd for years, external usb drives are more suitables for my needs."
    Also :
There is less and less software avalaible on DVD, it is almost all on download basis. Don't you use Apple Store ?
i do not reinstall my OS every year, when it wil be done, i expect that it will run for the rest of the life of that MacBook.(2 or 3 years) .What do you do with your Mac to have to reinstall your OS, i never had to reinstall OSX Leopard nor do i had to reinstall my Win 7 pc.
I cannot download OSX Lion because i do not have Snow Leopard installed !!!  USB bootables for OS Lion are avalaible. Why not for Snow Leopard ?.
The solutions have been made for new MacBook that excluded older customer. I can update my MacBookAir from a PC-drive, why can't i do the same with my old MacBook ?
Finally i will try Drew's solution.

  • Macbook Pro Installing Snow Leopard without DVDs

I want to install a SSD into my MacBook Pro (mid-2010).  So, after I install the new SSD, I need to reinstall my OS (Snow Leopard).  But the internal DVD player is broken.  I have an external DVD player, but I am afraid the Mac will not recognize it because when I plug the external DVD player to the mac with USB cable, there will be no operating system on the mac.  Am I just worried too much?  Can I just install OS x from an external DVD player?
Please someone answer this question.  Thank you,

Can't you temporarily install the SSD in an external enclosure and install the OS onto it that way, while you still have a bootable drive in the computer? After you verify that it works, you can install it in the MBP.

You need to purchase the upgrade disk (it is a DVD). Then just put it in and run the installer. When it was first released it was $29 USD, do not know if the price has changed or not.
The usual precautions about backing up your data apply. In fact I would recommend either making a Disk Image of your current boot drive or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to an external drive. I upgraded 5 machines from Leopard to Snow Leopard without any issues, but better to be safe than sorry.

  • Need help installing Snow Leopard.

Need help installing Snow Leopard on a 2009 iMac. Hard drive is only choice for location and message says hard drive can't be used because it is used for Time Machine backups. Ultimate goal is to upgrade to OS 10.6.8.

Check to see if you have a file called backup.backupdb
If you do that means at some time in the past Time Machine was configure to backup to that drive
If that is not where you want your backup to to go, and it should not be stored there any way, then delete it and the install should work then.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • Can't Install Snow Leopard on new drive

I'm having a relatively serious problem with upgrading my hardware. I have a Mac Pro tower with an empty HD slot into which I installed a new drive which mounts properly.
My plan was to simply move everything from the old hard drive to the new one, using Disk Utility's "Restore" function.
That seemed to work fine, but when I restarted and attempted to switch startup disks, selecting the new drive caused an immediate kernel panic (the grey screen saying "You need to restart your computer") which was preceeded momentarily by some very strange dos-like text in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
So after several attempts, I gave up and tried to simply install snow-leopard on the new drive. That never even got started. While the snow leopard installer would happily install the OS on any of my external drives that had enough free space, the new drive (despite the fact that it was mounted on the system) would not even show up in the list of drives to select in the Snow Leopard installer.
I checked the formatting of the drive, and it seems to be the same as both my current startup disk, and the external drive that the OS could be installed on.
How can I move my entire system to this new drive without causing instant kernel panics? Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers,
    Ari

Interesting. Yes, I think that is what macjack had in mind. However, after doing what macjack said, your drive would be erased Mac OS X extended (journaled), and, after shutting down disk utility, you could just continue the install you would have started. At the end of the install, you could restore your files, data, settings, and apps from your other drive. The choice, of course is yours. If I were doing it, I would perfer the first alternative.

  • Install Snow Leopard without Leopard

I have a MacBook, which was running Leopard.
It got corrupted, and even I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard. So I purchased Snow Leopard Retail Box.
Now, I want to install Snow Leopard, but I cannot start Leopard. How can I perform clean install of Snow Leopard, without needing Leopard.
    Videos Links are welcomed too.

Do you have the $29 Snow Leopard DVD or the $169 Boxed Set? If the former then do this:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
When the installation has completed your computer will require a restart after which you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

  • Can't Install Snow Leopard on external drive

    Hey Mac Addicts,
I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on an external drive (Lacie Triple Rugged, FW800 USB3.0)  but keep on getting "Installation failed, can't copy the support files.
My drive is partioned in to 5x100GB partitions, GUID partition scheme. I boot from my installation disk, choose my partition and hit install. The DVD spins and spins and eventually give me a failure. I've tried not installing the custom options (Quicktime 7, Rosetta and have even unchecked X11) but still get the same.
The MacBook Pro I'm trying this from is running 10.6.8 and previous successful attempts at doing this were from 10.6.4, I'm thinking this is the issue, but would rather not have to clean install my machine and try again.
If anybody has any idea's that'll be marvellous, as I am a little confused and lost, especially as I've done this before.
All the best and thanks in advance.
    BigMik

    Two things,
    1: Use FIrewire
2: Use Disk Utility to first Erase with Security Option Zero All Data, the entire drive, then setup the partitions
3: If it doesn't work, then increase the size of the 10.6 parittion or reducing the partitions until it works.
4: Also do all this from the Disk Utility on the internal drive, then try again from the 10.6 install disk. Apple might have pulled something.
Also you can clone your present OS X 10.6 partition using the donationware Carbon Copy Cloner, however the external partition needs to be large enough for all the contents (recommended)

  • Cannot install Snow Leopard onto external drive

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on a second drive, an external bare drive in an Icy Dock enclosure connected to a MacPro (running 10.6.6) via serial port. Apple Disc Utility confirms that the external drive (a Seagate 325gb) has a partition map scheme GUID Partition Table. SMART Status is not supported. Connection Bus reads as SCSI but it's connected with a serial cable.
I'm able to perform the first part of the install by selecting the external drive but when I have to restart and complete the install from the original Snow Leopard disc (10.6), the external drive no longer shows up. I've tried several times and have restarted the Icy Dock external drive enclosure.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

Not necessarily. Use a backup utility so that you can deselect all the data from within your Home folder as well as third-party applications in order to create a bootable disk but without some of the excess. Any of the following should be suitable:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Install Snow Leopard without CD

    Hi
I bought a Macbook pro, and the previous owner formatted the whole HD. So, there is no operating system anymore in there.
Now, i wanna install OS Lion and then upgrade to yosemite. But i have no CD for snow leopard. I saw i can order from store, but i dont wanna wait till they ship...
Is there any other possibility to be able to boot the macbook and install an OS?
They said from apple i can go to the genius bar, they will upgrade for free to yosemite and install me snow leopard. but i have to wait a week.
    What can i do?
    Thank u

Okay, that's what we needed to know. Your Mac came with Snow Leopard, 10.6.6. I guarantee you cannot install the retail 10.6.3 version of SL on that Mac. The version you need were on gray DVDs that came with the Mac, and were supposed to stay with it. If the seller no longer has them, you'll have to get replacement disks from Apple.
Call Apple customer support and let them know you need to purchase replacement OS disks. They will ask for the Mac's serial number to make sure you get the correct ones. Typically, there are two disks. Pretty much the machine specific version of the OS on the first disk, and all of the bundled software such as Garageband and such on the other. Expect to pay about $45 for the two disks.
After you finally get the disks and install Snow Leopard, you'll be able to create an App Store account. Then download and install Yosemite.

  • My Macbook Pro has just had a new hard drive put in it but i still need to install snow leopard without a disk?

My Macbook pro has just had a new 500gb hard drive in it and osx snow leopard had not been put on it because i never got a disk when i bought it. It still comes up with the grey screen with the flashing folder which i think would be normal because there is nothing on the hard drive. How do i install OSX Snow Leopard back on it the cheapest way possible?
    Thanks

You might be in a bind. While is is normal for new Macs that shipped with Lion to omit a system installation DVD, yours was running Snow Leopard. Apple included a system installation CD or DVD for every computer that shipped with every computer through Snow Leopard. Lion was installed on every machine built starting about August 2011, ending the DVD era.
Apparently your computer had been sitting in someone's inventory for a while, but that's no excuse for them to have removed the DVD from its box.
Try booting Lion Internet Recovery. Read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
I suspect Lion Recovery may not work since "your computer's eligibility for Lion will be verified with Apple" and you appear not to have purchased it.
Please let me know what happens when you attempt to boot Lion Recovery.
