Help: iPhoto quits on its own, doesn't generate crash log

I cannot open iphoto long enough to do anythign with it. It reports that there are "incostencies" it needs to repair, I let it do that. Then as soon as I click around in the application it quits on me. Rinse, lather, repeat. In particular, seems as though turning on Photostream makes it even more unstable.
I do not have 3ivx installed (checked /Library/Application Support/) and I even de-installed Perian (which as a 3ivx component in it). I would post an iPhoto crash log here but the last crash log generated is from 2007 unless I'm looking in the wrong spot (Console.app > Crash Reporter > iPhoto.crash.log).
Someone please help with whatever suggestions you have.

Hoo boy, excuse my egregious spelling errors in the first post. I was typing quickly while trying to get out the door for something.
So, I attempted your suggestion after getting home again. I was unable to get the behavior to repeat itself with the new test library. I even turned on photostream and played around with Faces a bit.
Now, after switching back to my default library, it hasn't crashed doing the same things that I was trying before (accessing photostream, playing with Faces, clicking around rapidly). So, for whatever reason, that may have helped it? I'll post if there's another crash later.

Either get a self-powered drive or buy a ($30) powered USB hub to plug the external drive into.  This hub draws power from the wall instead of the Mac.
I once replaced a 250W power supply on a tower system for a friend with a 500W.  Suddenly all of the 2 USB pprinters and 2 USB external disks and keyboard and mouse and camera suddenly worked.
You cannot replace your MBP power supply but can provide external power to USB devices.

  • 4S goes blank, thought battery low, finally got it to work but quits on its own. Any ideas?

I need some ideas. 4S turns on/off at random. If I hold on button down it reloads which seems to have stopped working. I plugged it into computer and am at the point of reloading software. I have iPad and ICloud, will I loose all of my information if I download?

    Hello Dobby554,
I would be concerned too if my iPhone was shutting down unexpectedly.  I found an article with some steps to take when you encounter an issue like this:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

You also mentioned that you were not sure if the data will be lost if you restore your iPhone.  You will need to backup your data before you restore your device so that you can restore the backup:

  • Mail service quits on its own

    Hello,
The mail service on my server is turning itself off automatically. I can turn it back on and for a few moments it will run, but them it shuts-off. The System log is awash with messages relating to postfix and dovecot, but I can't understand what they mean. Is there something, specific, I should be looking for in the logs? I know the logs are a key component in troublshooting, but I am just unsure what to look for. Also, clients cannot make IMAP connections to the server, SMTP is working fine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

There is a whole bunch of these messages. The Mail server is currently off at the time these messages are logged.

  • Word document shutting down on its own

    Hi,
This seems to be affecting only one document. All the other Word docs are running fine.
To clarify - the is Word 2004 on Mac OS X 10.5.5
The document is my notes document, created by me and not downloaded from the internet.
Its been fine for the last 3 months.
However, anytime today that I have tried to add to it and pressed the save button - it has quit on its own and show an error message.

This seems to be affecting only one document
Well then it's a no-brainer. The document is corrupt and you should copy/paste it's contents into a new document.
But since this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Microsoft Office, you should really consider posting issues with Office on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products as they would be focused more toward the issue than an Apple forum and there are Microsoft appointed MVPs there to assist.

  • Why can't I turn Airport on in my iMac? It turns off on its own.

I have an iMac with leopard and an intel processor. Airport (the hardware/software responsible for my Wi-Fi) seems to turn on and off on its own.
Sometimes when I log on, Airport is on. Sometimes after it goes to sleep, Airport is on. But sometimes, Airport isn't on, and there's nothing I can do to turn it on. It appears that this is an issue other users are having, but I can't find the resolution. I am looking for easy steps!
I have gone to network preferences, and tried pushing that cute little "Turn Airport On" button. Nothing. I've tried deleting the locations and adding a new one. Nope. I've changed the order of the network devices. I've tried to turn airport on through that little icon in the upper right. It's hollow, and tells me "No Airport Card Installed". It's lying. It was there two days ago. System profiler tells me that there's no Aiport card installed, but it did *two days ago*.
I admit my ignorance of Macs whole-heartedly. I bought my first a month ago - I only spent 3 hours that first day getting it on my network. The next day I spent another 3 hours getting it BACK on the network. Now I have spent 2 days trying to get it to believe it CAN get on a network.
An Apple salesman convinced me how terrific Macs were, and impressed me with how easy they are to use. He made a crack about how inferior Dell was and how sorry he felt for me. I am writing this message on a Dell laptop. It is connected to my wireless network. It took me 3 minutes to connect it, and it never once has told me that it no longer has a network card. Neither have the other 3 PCs in my house.
Can someone PLEASE save a poor, helpless PC user. I clearly need assistance -I read somewhere that I can run a 'script' to turn it on - but I don't know this OS so I don't understand what that entails
If any answer involves taking my Mac into a "Genius Bar", then the "Genius" can keep it. I've never had to take an out-of-box PC to a "Genius" - because it doesn't take one to fix a PC. Please guys, save a PC user. This Mac cost more than the PC I wanted and it's worth a lot less to me right now.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are experiencing these problems, but sometimes a new machine (be it Apple, Dell, whatever) can be defective right out the box - its not unheard of.
If your machine came with defective hardware and is still under warranty (seems to be the case here) then you have nothing to lose taking it back to where you bought it and, if there really is defective hardware present I am sure they'll rectify the problem.
A small note: these problems are not manufacturer-specific - its pointless blaming the manufacturer as I can assure you this happens with ALL brands. Apple supplies quality hardware and software - I know of a user who has had a machine switched on since 1987 without problems

  • My MacBook keeps restarting on its own....

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro (2010) keeps restarting on its own and i get the grey message upon restartup that my computer restarted because of an unknown error, or something to that effect.  I actually have taken it to Mac Hollywood, an authorized Apple repair facility but they were totally useless and said they didnt encounter that problem although I insisted that it was an issue.  Anyway, they grudgingly replaced the hard drive but after getting it (clean install) it happened again before I even got the setup complete!  Can anyone please please help me??  I do have the latest crash log and can post it to make it easier and hope that info helps.  Thank you in advance

Thank you Clinton for such a fast reply!  I actually did purchase AppleCare and even forwarded some logs to AppleCare support, but they all insisted it "probably" is/was a hard drive failure.  Even that authorized center didnt find or even suggest that my MacBook has any problems at all!  I will definitely let AppleCare know that a wise forum member mentioned to watch out for a GPU problem!
    Thanks so much!

  • How do I get photoshop to open up, after shutting down on its own?

I have been editing images all day on my laptop, and out of no where photoshop quits on its own. I tried restarting the laptop, but that did nothing to fix the problem.

Supply pertinent information for quicker answers
The more information you supply about your situation, the better equipped other community members will be to answer. Consider including the following in your question:
    Adobe product and version number
    Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
    Screenshots of the problem
Computer hardware, such as CPU; GPU; amount of RAM; etc.

  • DPM doesn't clear transaction logs

We use DPM 2012 to backup Exchange 2013. It works as shown the screenshot.
However, the Exchange Admin Center shows no full backup.
Also, we have a lot old transaction logs. How to DPM clear the transaction logs?

    Hi,
Check the application event log for events from exchange after a DPM synchronization is complete.  Make sure DPM is configured to perform FULL backups for one copy of the DB's in the DAG and not just copy only.
DPM is not responsible for truncating exchange logs. Exchange Writer tells Information Store, that backup has completed. Now Information Store using its own logic can decide which logs can be truncated. Basically IS will retrieve from passive copies
information about what is the oldest log not yet replayed to the database and will look for the Checkpoint at Log Generation in log header in this log. It will allow logs older than Checkpoint at Log
Generation to be truncated. Approximately 200 logs should remain.
See Tim’s excellent blog post on this subject:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/timmcmic/archive/2012/03/12/exchange-2010-log-truncation-and-checkpoint-at-log-creation-in-a-database-availability-group.aspx

Specifically, the Microsoft Exchange Replication Service manages CRCL so that log continuity is maintained and logs are not deleted if they are still needed for replication. The Microsoft Exchange
Replication Service and the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service communicate by using remote procedure calls (RPCs) regarding which log files can be deleted.
For truncation to occur on highly available (non-lagged) mailbox database copies, the answer must be "Yes" to the following questions:
    * Has the log file been backed up, or is CRCL enabled?
    * Is the log file below the checkpoint?
    * Do the other non-lagged copies of the database agree with deletion?
    * Has the log file been inspected by all lagged copies of the database?
For truncation to occur on lagged database copies, the answer must be "Yes" to the following questions:
    * Is the log file below the checkpoint?
    * Is the log file older than ReplayLagTime + TruncationLagTime?
    * Is the log file deleted on the active copy of the database?

    Regards

    Hi Paul_PMA,
    Based on this
MSDN document, trace files are not created without initially creating the log directory. Make sure that the directory for
web_messages.svclog or web_tracelog.svclog exists, or specify an alternate logging directory in the listener configuration. Please also mark sure that IIS has write permissions to the log file path.
For more information, please try to refer to the following articles:

  • Computer restarts on its own, help!

Hey all, perhaps this isn't the right place in the forums, but I just don't know where else to go. My computer just in the past 24hours has been restarting on its own saying 'Your computer was restarted because of problems' or something along those lines. From what I've gathered online this may indicate a kernal panic, but I just don't understand on those other sites how you go about solving this problem or even what it means fully. Is there something I can do on my own, or do I have to bring it into the mac store? Please help me if you can, I am not very tech savvy but I will try to do my best to save my mac. It is a new macbook pro retina display and I just don't understand what could have happend. If it helps I am going to copy the specs below, and thank you anyone who takes the time to help me with this problem (sry i know there is a LOT of text below):

Disconnect all third-party peripherals. Quit all active applications. Do the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Applet not opening a socket on its own host. Please help.

I have also posted this in JSC2 forum.
My applet is not able to open a socket on its own host.
The applet is being served by a JSP (developed using Sun Creator2) from my laptop behind a DHCP broadband router at (say) 125.238.104.132 at my residence. I have a URL samsub.no-ip.biz that redirects port 80 calls to 29080 where my application runs. All required router rules/mapping are done and the JSPs run perfectly fine. In one of the pages, I have inserted an applet inside an escape disabled statictext field as follows:
    <applet code="AppClient.class" width=540 height=440></applet>
The applet code and the test server code are shown below for your analysis. Note that, when run on the same machine (at home), the applet works fine. The commented lines will show other failed test. The error reported at the java console was: null pointer at line 56
Could someone help me please. Thanx. MarySam

    Hi Guys,
I'm not actually from Mozilla Firefox, but I've had this problem before, and I've solved it with the help from another website.
What you need to do is download a programme called "tdsskiller" from here:
    http://www.geekpolice.net/t23369-computer-infected
scroll down the page and you should see a link. (I know the article itself seems irrelevant to your problem, but trust me, the programme they recommend works on this virus too.) It's only 1.3MB or so, so it doesn't take up huge amounts of space either! :)
I can safely say that it is COMPLETELY safe to download this from geekpolice.net, as this website is a free website which helps people with viruses on their computer. If you ever have another problem with anything to do with computers, go and have a look on geekpolice.net, they should have something that might help you.
Before anyone wonders why I am singing its praises so much, no I am not advertising them for any personal gain, but they have helped me get rid of some pretty nasty viruses on my computer before, so I am very grateful to them :)
SO, anyway, after you've downloaded the tdsskiller, you should run it, and it may find some infected files, in which case let it repair them. After rebooting your computer, the annoying opening tab thing should be gone!
I hope this works for anyone who's stuck :) If it doesn't, I'm really sorry, but it has definately worked for me!
    Good luck!
    Yashmeee :)

My MacBook Pro 10.6.8 prompted me of a new itunes update this morning, so i downloaded it. Since then itunes has been starting up randomly on its own, and starts playing the first song on the list. I pause the song, and it resumes it on its own again. I'm not joking. So, I end up quiting out of itunes; but, it starts right back up again on its own. After quiting out of the app a few times, it eventually stops reopening; however, about an hour later (or less) it opens again. HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP? I'm just about to delete itunes, because I've had enough of this crap. I hope someone can help. I've restarted the laptop, and it seemed like that fixed it, then itunes started up doing the same thing again an hour later. ituneshelper is unchecked; bluetooth is off; i only have speakers and a mouse plugged in (also charger).

Read this Apple Discussion Thread and possible solutions. The audio jack has been the main culprit, also certain sync and automation settings including connected remotes.
