HELP!! Macbook won't sleep/hibernate

This is a Macbook (Intel Core Duo) purchased in August of 06. I'm new to Macs and don't know how to troubleshoot them. I need to find a solution for this problem!
Problem:
At times my bluetooth is working fine, but MOST of the time it says Bluetooth:Not Available. I don't use bluetooth hardly at all, but this is keeping my Macbook from going to sleep.
When it says "not available" and I shut the lid to put the Mac to sleep, the computer acts like it's going to sleep, then the apple light flashes and the cd drive spins, then it acts like it tries to sleep again. This continues until you open the computer back up and wait for bluetooth to become available.
I've tried multiple things: force shutdown, removing the battery for minutes, reset the PMU, trash the bluetooth plist file then reset the PMU, and I have searched Apple's site for days without success. Does the hardware just need to be replaced? If so, do I have to take it somewhere or can they ship you the part if its under warranty? I don't live anywhere near an Apple dealer/repair. HELP!!

I assume you have tried to simply turn Bluetooth off since you don't use it? (preferences->bluetooth->settings->turn bluetooth off).
If you can't resolve the problem on your own you should call AppleCare. Unless you bought an Applecare agreement you're probably out of the 90 day telephone support period. They'll still talk to you but if it turns out not be a warranty problem you'll have to pay for the service call.
If they determine that it is a warranty problem they just ship you a box to put your Macbook in. You ship it back, they fix it and then ship to back to your house. There's no need to drive to an Apple dealer.
My experience with laptop computers (Apples, Dells and Thinkpads) is that you should always get support agreements with them. A single out-of-warranty repair makes it worthwhile.

  • My macbook won't sleep

Recently my MacBook won't go to sleep.  If I close the lid or choose sleep from the menu it shuts down and restarts.  When it is closed, it restarts continuously until it's opened again.  I hadn't downloaded anything new before the problem started, and all of my programs are as up to date as they can be (I'm on the Tiger OS so I can only update programs that work with that old of an OS).  My battery was also not holding charge like it should so I got it replaced.  That didn't help the sleep issue though.

Hi. Please check if your bluetooth is on. This might cause some computers not to sleep because it keeps on looking for bluetooth devices. Also you can try resetting the SMC and see if that helps. This goes for the battery as well. You might want to put more info regarding your battery though. Use system profiler to get the info and post it. Here are  the steps for resetting your SMC.

  • My MacBook won't sleep and I'm forced to reboot...

For the past two weeks, every other time I close my MacBook it will either sleep or it will not sleep. When it won't sleep, the light on the apple turns off but the little indicator light stays on and I can hear the fans whirring. When it stays on instead of sleeping, the screen is frozen and black and I'm forced to turn the power off then turn it back on. I've tried a few things including taking the battery out and holding down the power button but nothing seems to be working. My nearest Apple approved service provider is about an hour away and I don't mind taking it but if I can fix it without making the drive that would be awesome. If there are some specific things you need to find out my computer let me know and I'll fill you in. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Failure to sleep can be caused by hardware or software. To troubleshoot the problem you'll want to make sure nothing is connected to the computer but the power adapter since a USB or FireWire device might be the cause. Your computer came with a hardware diagnostic disc - either it is part of your installation DVD or it is a separate disc. Boot up with that disc and let it run. If it shows a problem you know you need to make a trip to the shop. If not, we can't positively eliminate hardware but we'll move on.
You'll need to create a new user account, after which you should shut down the computer and then restart and log in directly to the new account. This will eliminate any start-up items that might be causing the problem as well as any munged preferences that might be the cause.
If the computer continues to show shutdown issues you'll want to look at: 1) 3rd party drivers such as all-in-one printers and scanners - uninstall, restart and try again, 2) RAM upgrades - remove and try again, 3) an OS reinstall (which I've saved for next to last), 4) computer hardware. If you get to the OS reinstall, I'd recommend that you fully back up the computer and then erase the hard drive, reinstall the OS, and immediately try sleeping the computer.
Shutdown and wakeup issues are the two problems I hate dealing with most.

What are you guys doing about this? At least provide some information on whether you have even taken notice to this problem or not! There won't be a point of a fix once the hard-disk is gone because of all the hard resets.

It's not just HP,  but Dell too.   Suggest switching the power options settings to "never" and always shutting down Windows before closing the lid.  PITA,  but avoids all those 'hard stops' doing any damage. I've partly fixed the issue on my machine by updating all the drivers to very latest,  shutting down and rebooting,  then shutting down,  removing the battery pack,  holding down the power button for at least 30 seconds,  then replacing the battery and booting up as usual.   So far,  this has fixed the "sleep" problem,  but HIbernate is still not working.     I've a Dell machine,  but a lot of the Hardware is common to the HP laptops - Intel Video etc. Steve

  • Need help macbook won't come out of sleep mode

Please help I have had my macbook since may of 2006 and this is my first real problem with it.
I basically been loading videos to watch and then downloading some of the videos, once the process had been started I would leave to allow the videos to load/download but when I come back I find the macbook in a state of sleep and the only way that I can think of to getit out of this is to shut it down and reboot.
This is my first mac and up until now I was quite impressed so please help to not soil the good Apple name.
    13" Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'm a newbie so I might not answer your question, but if you leave the macbook open and it goes to sleep, then you just have to press the power button and it should turn back on. I always thought though that if you let it sleep, then you won't be able to download anything because the computer disconnects from the internet during sleep. Am I right? Lol, now I'm asking the questions.

  • Macbook won't sleep or wake on command, overheats

I seem to have a sleeping and overheating problem with my 13" aluminum late-2008 edition 13" MacBook (I bought it exactly 4 years ago).
When I put my computer into sleep mode, be it by shutting the lid or selecting the sleep mode, it doesn't seem to stay asleep for long. I'll hear it running, it'll get extremely hot (whether or not the fans turn on seems to be a crapshoot). If I let it sleep longer than a couple minutes, the battery will run out, completely. Half the time when I turn the computer back on after plugging it back in, it doesn't respond right away and I'll have to force a reboot.
Other than sleep and possibly fan issues, the computer is running fine. No other complaints. Already took the battery out and reset the SMC. Not convinced that did anything worthwhile.
    Help?

    Hi there kbuckle!
I have an article for you that can help you troubleshoot your computer's sleep issue. That article is specific to Mountain Lion, and can be found right here:
OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11080
Additionally, this older article might have some further troubleshooting steps for you, but it is more geared toward Snow Leopard and other older operating systems:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Hope this helps. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • MacBook won't SLEEP properly?

My MacBook is custom set to go to the screensaver after 3 minutes and then the display is set to go to sleep after 4 minutes and it is set to ask for a password to wake from sleep or screensaver. Anyway, sometimes I'll walk away from my computer for a long amount of time (maybe an hour or two) and when I come back the screen will be all black so I assume it's asleep. However, when I tap the keyboard it goes right back into OSX without asking for a password or anything. Is it suppsoed to be like this or is my OSX messed up? Thanks.

This is purely anecdotal. I can't say it will work for you. My problem was similar, being that after closing the lid, the apple logo would light up and then go out periodically, but with my MB, I would also hear the cdrom eject. When I opened it back up, the thing would boot up as though I had restarted it. This happened every minute or two nutil I opened it back up or powered it off completely. To solve it, I booted off my OS X instll disk and ran an archive and install OS X. Then I ran Software Update several times until the OS was current again. Now there are no more reboots and I didn't have to erase my data. My applications, emails, photos, desktop settings and everything are still there. I'm also using Bootcamp and didn't have to erase that partition. That still works fine too. The only thing that I know of that I'll have to reinstall is Parallels Desktop where I run a virtual Windows PC at the same time as OS X. But, the Virtual Disk Images are fine, so I won't lose any info there after I reinstall the Parallels program.
I hope this reply is helpful. I was nervous about reinstalling, but I couldn't accept not being able to put the MB in sleep mode. I pretty much never turn it off.

  • Help: Macbook freezes after sleep and gray screen freeze on startup

I've got a new MacBook (45 days old, minimal usage) and I'm starting to have some problems.
When my computer goes to sleep after inactivity I have a hard time waking it. The screen turns on right away but the mouse/cursor remains frozen. The computer does not respond to any keyboard commands. I usually have to reboot the machine when this happens. I noticed this problem a few weeks ago and it has since become more and more frequent.
I've also noticed that with some regularity my computer freezes on the gray screen during start up and never reaches the mac icon. This has become more and more frequent since I first noticed the initial problem and happens one in every 3 or 4 startups.
I haven't installed any new software except for the regular software upgrades. Nothing extraordinary.
Is it possible that these problems are related? Am I doing something wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The grey screen on startup may be the known issue, especially if you start to get vertical lines on the screen. If you can reboot using PRAM reset, go to the displays control panel, set the resolution to something besides your current resolution, then revert to your original setting. That should fix that part.
As far as the freezing after sleep goes, I had a similar issue where the macbook would not actually go to sleep (white light stayed solid), and opening the lid would result in a dimmed screen that I had to force-shut down the computer to get out of. After sending it in for RSD, this seems to have been resolved.

  • Macbook won't sleep

My Macbook wont sleep, therefore it drains all power. When I shut the lid of the computer, it acts like it is going to sleep, then after about 10 seconds the apple light flashes and the cd drive spins. It repeats this process until the battery drains.
I also have been having trouble with my bluetooth being shown as "not available". I keep bluetooth off, but it always says "not available" and there is nothing I can do to fix this. I'm thinking the two problems are connected! Another thing that seems weird is, it seems the bluetooth is NOT AVAILABLE when the battery is under 50% charged, then AVAILABLE once the battery has a charge.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm new to Macs. Thanks!

OK, sounds like PMU. Call Apple, and have them tell you how to reset. 800-275-2273

  • Macbook won't Sleep or Shut Down

I just got my Macbook on Friday and it's great apart from the fact it won't shutdown or go to sleep.
When I try to shut it down, either by the power button or the menu, it just restarts.
When I close the lid or select Sleep from the menu the display turns off, the sleep light pulses once and then it kicks back into life. It's also accompanied by a drive access noise. Is this a common problem or am I going to have to send my Macbook back?
I've tried doing a software update which hasn't solved the problem and there are no USB devices attached.

Do a search for Sleep. You will find such as this
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8379633&#8379633
I suspect there is some simple fix, but getting Apple Support/Genius to do it would be best.

  • Help, MacBook won't shut down properly!!

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    Many thanks MJ,
I deleted everything you mentioned and sysprefs worked for a while but as soon as I tried opening an application e.g. mail, the first reboot of sysprefs worked fine, but subsequent ones hang. Funny thing is now the power down problem has gone away - it seems to work very quickly - I guess a function of clearing out the caches folder?
Anyway, sysprefs issue remains. Ive reported the fault to apple anonymously (have copy of report if that helps). Here are the console messages during a number of restarts and subsequent attempts to open sys prefs. If you/others need more please let me know (the last line represents me forcing a quit of sysprefs):

  • Help: Macbook won't reboot, can't reinstall OS

My MacBook hung in Quark Xpress 7.01; could't force quit, had to shut down by holding down power key. Since when MacBook has failed to revive. It won't restart on its own. Installer Disk 1 Repair Utility fails to find the hard disk to repair; it cannot find hard disk on which to install OS; hardware test using extended testing shows no hardware fault; any thoughts?
    Dave

try to restart while pressing "option" key, and when it started, see if the screen shows 2 option (OS from HD and OS from disk).
If there is only one shows (OS from disk), maybe you have a faulty HD.
Try to reset PMU and see how it goes, and if that still fail, try to reseat the HD.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/diy/order.html
and click on upgrade the HD, but you just re-seated that not replacing it.
    Good Luck.

  • Macbook won't sleep with power adapter plugged in

    Hi,
My Macbook has stopped going to sleep if the power adapter is plugged in.
I have the power adapter energy setting to sleep after 30 minutes. When I got the Macbook (about a month ago) the thing would sleep until I pressed the spacebar.
Now, the screen blanks but otherwise the Mac remains awake.
If I close the lid the Mac immediately goes to sleep.
I have reset the SMU but this didn't fix the problem. I also checked disk permissions and verified the disk in Disk Utility - all good.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    John

my MacBook has also stopped going to sleep with the power adapter plugged in or when using battery power, unless I close the lid. Did you ever figure out the problem? Did you try calling Apple Care?
    thanks,
    Liz

  • Urgent Help Macbook Won't Start Up

    Hey
Im in need of some "urgent help", yesturday i was working on my GCSE coursework, i saved and then i turned my macbook off. Later that day i turned it back on to add some finishing touches, the macbook decided not to load the OS.
It just goes to the apple logo and the circle thingy and just stays there.
I rang up the helpline but they basically said that it dosen't matter that i can't get my coursework because i don't have the extended warranty. They advised me to come here because "we are bound to have hundreds of other cases the same to your's on there" that to me say's something.
Although i will continue to use the mac if this has to go in for repair, the response is quite inconsiderate being honest. Im 15 and i can't afford the extra care.
So im really reaching out for your help here folks, it's due in next week. I need to get the file off there desperately. I've done a hardware check and everything comes up fine.
    Please guys HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks

Try running Disk Utility, and repair permissions and verify disk. If verify disk shows any problems, boot from your install disc and repair disk.
If you can't repair the disk and get going again, you may be able to do an archive and install OS reinstallation, which will preserve your data. If that doesn't work for some reason, you may be able to do an erase and install, which will erase your data. Hopefully you have a backup.
I assume phone support works the same way in the U.K. as in the U.S. You have a 1-year warranty. If you call after 90 days, they ask for a credit card in case the problem is not covered by warranty. If the problem is covered by warranty, you are not charged.
If the problem is solved by any of the above troubleshooting steps, it is not a warranty issue. The Apple support person is probably just trying to save you from being charged for what is very possibly not a warranty-covered problem.
