Help me wrap my brain around two-color printing.

I am doing my first layout for a two-color print job.  It's a double-sided promo piece for a local non-profit.
Armed with my Pantone solid uncoated swatch book (rest assured, we are actually using uncoated paper) I am trying to piece together how to get all my ducks in a row.
The solid color blocks/text colors are pretty easy to work out - my swatch is the darkest color I can go, and I am able to lighten that Pantone color by tinting with white.
Where I'm running into issues is with my graphics.  I am using two images (raster graphics) that have been converted in Photoshop to a single Pantone color.  I did this by converting the image to grayscale > changing the mode to duotone > choosing "monotone" from the dropdown menu, and picking my Pantone color from the list.
Where I get confused is in reading online about other folks doing two-color printing, they are importing the grayscale image and a separate Pantone spot layer on top of it into InDesign.  I don't even begin to understand this.  Is it necessary?
By reading my process above, does it raise any red flags for you more knowledgeable folks out there?
Thanks so much,
Sara

Thank you - I actually was able to accomplish the task by using .psd's instead of .gif's.  They were not in spot color originally, they were all over the board actually (of course!).
I am baffled by one last thing, however.  I did the separations preview and took out all CMYK colors.  However, when I exported the "package" the process color "black" was showing up.  Yet, whenI did the separations preview and ONLY viewed black, both pages were completely blank.  Luckily, I'm on good terms with the printer, so I explained this mystery to him when submitting the package of files.  If he has any issues, I trust him enough to let me know what needs to be done.  This printing firm does design as well, so I feel confident they will red flag any really serious things.
Thank you all again for your help!  I've attached the final file in PDF, in case you'd like to see what you helped me do!  The fades around the top text have some weird lines in PDF, but I assured they don't exist in the actual print file...

  • Tips on wrapping my brain around using compression and expansion

I have audio of an event where unfortunately some people were standing too far form the mic at points so their audio is low. What i am trying to do is wrap my brain around the Dynamics Processor to raise the low bits up to peak at -3db and then if anything peaks, I'd like to lower it to about -3db also. I'd like to keep the dynamic range between only about -8 and -3. Can anyone give me a play by on how to go about using any of the plugins to accomplish this?

You could try the Speech Volume Leveler effect under the Amplitude and Compression menu. Some experimentation may be needed to find the best parameters.

  • On-screen proofing - please help me get my head around Aperture color!

The context: I recently sent some files for printing to an online lab, and found the prints looking very dull and "muddy" compared with what I'd seen on the screen of my iMac 24".
Looking for what I'd done wrong, I experimented with "on-screen proofing", but I was surprised to find that using a big variety of proofing profiles, the "proof" display looked hardly any different from the "raw" display. I even checked that it was working at all by using a b&w profile!
Next I calibrated my monitor using a Spyder2Express. This isn't the most full-featured tool, and I calibrated the monitor to gamma-2.2, white point "native". Now the screen looks a lot duller.
Going into Aperture I again find the same thing with "soft proofing" - changing the colour profile makes hardly any difference. What also surprised me was that using my original screen profile "iMac", the display doesn't look like it did before I calibrated the monitor (if you see what I mean ..)
Obviously there are some tricks I'm missing here. If someone could set me straight, or mention some resources for this specific question, I'd be very grateful!

as a photographer I know the frustration you suffer from , very well.
Once upon a time photographers went to the "darkroom". there they cutted stripes out of photopaper, exposed them in diffrent lengh to the light under the filmp rojektor. Then developed them and compared to decide, how finaly to expose and develope the Image.
To get a good print out of your picture I have some sugestion.
    A ) try until it fits :
if you want to go on with the onlinelab, take the picture you got and change the settings in Aperture according to what you think is not right.
    f.exemp.: +10% contrast, -50 % Booster, +20% saturation. then "save as" and
name the file xxxxx_v1.jpg . Next version you increase all changes values for another 10 %. then send the pictures to the lab and see what comes close to your expectations.
    B ) change the fotolab :
you will get a beter result if you decide your nice pictures are worth some more cent. You choose a recommendet digital fotolab. One benefit willl be, they´ll tell you how to set your color managment so it fits best to their printer.
next you bring one picture file to them to print. next you make the correction you want to come close to what you want. so here we are what Micheal suggestet.
    C ) do it yourself :
get your own good printer like Epson 2400....
Please don belive that a cheap printer does the same like the one mentioned above.
here you will spend more money than on way A+B, but in the end you´ll have prints wich look like you want, on the fineart paper you want them and they will last very long time.
    D) the professional way wich may include also B+C:
You want or need professional quality and have the money to spend on it.
Sorry, but no Apple Monitor comes close to a hardware calibratet Monitor. Maybe they are semi-professional. I dont say this to insult Apple, ore somebody else, but i say this to sway out the illusion, " if I just spend more money on the calibration tool and software, I´ll have better prints". It´s just not possible, because the monitor cant show what is there. A Apple CRT monitor is far better in this. I you want to have a flatscreen TFT monitor to bring good results you have to choose one that is able to be hardware calibratet and has a higher lookup table (EIZO, LaCie, QuatoGrafics......)
I use use one professional EIZO CG21" and one semi-prof. EIZO FlexScanL985EX(21") and the diffrence is importand betwee the two.
But i need only one to be Print Proof ready.
Before i was always afraid when i gave the picture file to my client, because of what my pictures look like once it is printet. Now the outcome is right or differs only very little from what I saw on the screen.
my calibratiob tool is EYE ONE.
I write in such lenght, because in the beginning I thought I could get arround to by prof. hard-and software. I lost a lot of time and money in that way. so now i know
    Cameras I use: D200, D5
    G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   EIZO CG 21"+EIZO L985ex 21"
    G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   EIZO CG 21"+EIZO L985ex 21"

  • Printing photos from iPhoto 9.5.1 on my printer yeilds garish two color prints. Exporting the photo from iPhoto to desktop then printing from Preview works fine. How can I get good prints from iPhoto?

When printing photos in iPhoto 9.5.1 with my HP inkjet printer the multitude of colors in the photos are reduced to two, Magenta and Yellow. If the photos are exported to my desktop (MacPro) and printed from Preview, the colors in the prints are fine. How do I get iPhoto to print the colors correctly?

    Brad
What settings did you use in the Export Dialogue?
When you go File -> Export you get a tabbed box with various options. In the File Export tab you can choose to scale the pics, or keep them the same size, change or retain the format.

  • Changing CMYK preview to two-color

I have a two-color logo that appears in CMYK. I need it to be in two-color for a two-color print job that I am doing. How do I change that in Illustrator? Thanks!

    Cameo,
Are the two colours two of the CMYK or spot?
Depending on your printer you may be able to just use two of the CMYK colours and have them replace if relevant.

  • Wrapping vector label around a photographed bottle

I've designed a label for a soda bottle and now want to wrap it around a photograph of a bottle.  I actually mocked up the label and conducted a photoshoot, but now that I'm looking at it, the colors just don't match (see examples below) - which is why I want to utilize the vector label and slap it over the photograph.
Since I've gone ahead and mocked up the bottle with the  printed wrapper adhered to it, I want the positioning of the vector label to match up to the photographed label as closely as possible - because you can't get any  better perspective than reality.  The bottle was shot as dead on to center as possible, there is only an inkling of a vertical bulge.
This is the screenshot of the entire vector label that was printed and used on the photograph above.  The label overlaps itself by only a several militers for gluing.
So how do I go about wrapping this vector around the photographed bottle in order for it to match?
I've already tried freestyling with Transform > Warp in PS - but its painstakingly hit or miss.  I thought about mapping the vector label around a 3D cylinder of the same diamter of the photographed bottle and placing it over the bottle in PS.  Any other suggestions?
In the future, would taping a grid onto my bottle then photographing and aligning a digital version of the same grid & label be the best workflow?  Such as shown in this tutorial
    Thanks!

    Hi,
In the Layers panel of the 3D layer, you can revel the layer effects (which also has 3D texture maps) by clicking on the triangle at the right. From here, double clicking the name of the texture will open it. Alternatively, you can open the various texture maps inside the 3D panel, by first choosing the material to edit then navigating into the pop-up menus of the properties area.
I see that I actually scaled your artwork beyond the bounds of the cylinder edges to quickly get the artwork centrally placed. It would be better to start with your AI artwork placed into a new document and generate a Cylinder from that layer.
Once you get that created, place it into your image document and using the 3D camera, change the zoom level to affect the perspective (I over zoomed to 300 mm) while at the same time walking the camera back to keep it in frame. Once you have the perspective looking close, use the 3D axis widget with the cylindar mesh selcted, to constrain scale the cylinder to fit your image.
Hopefully this helps. It would be much better to see an animated walk thru but I'm not really setup for that at the moment.
    regards,
    steve

  • How do I select two-sided printing on LaserJet Pro 200 Color?

How can I print documents with two-sided printing with LaserJet Pro 200 color printer. I have Mac )S X 10.10 Yosemite.

    Hi @jleo ,
I see that you would like to know how to select the two-sided printing. I would be happy to help you, but I will need some more information.
What is the full name and product number of your printer? How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Are you using the Full Feature HP Software and Drivers or the Apple Update drivers?
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
Depending which printer you have and what drivers you are using, usually from the application you are printing from, go to File, Print, click on the Layout in the dropdown and you might have one also listed for Manual Duplex option, you should be able to select the two-sided setting there.
    Have a nice day!

I had a case that I drop little juice  over my macbook air, I dried it immediately and it keep  working fine, as this happen while I am traveling I kept working on it for around two week, it was working fine except that the few key became sticky.
When I back to Jordan I sent it to the authorized support center “ Multivision” in Amman and asked them to help in cleaning the keyboard as it still sticky and I explained to them that the issue and I clarified that all are working fine.
For a two days they didn’t back to me and they answered that they are still checking it, and then after they just called me saying that my macbook is damaged and not working and its better for me to buy a new one!!!
They say that the liquid damaged the main board! I explained to them that this can’t be as it was working fine when I delivered it to them and I didn’t ask them to open it I told them to help in cleaning the keyboard!
I am complaining about this support behavior and they were not cooperative nether polite in communicating.
I am not convinced that the liquid damaged my macbook and I think that the staff at “Multivision” are not qualified and did something wrong to damage my macbook!
I need you help to investigate this issue and have a feedback.

Get the new keyboard at eBay and replace by yourself may be cheaper way, though you're required higher skill and well know about MacBook Air.

  • CS 4 Wrapping a logo around a bottle

I am trying to remember how to wrap a logo around a bottle and can't remember how to do it. It isn't working with warp in photoshop. I have the text rasterized since it was created on a PC and don't have the matching fonts on the Mac. Help please? Thank you.

Several ways but next time you should have them outline the text and not rasterize it.
But since it is done then you can place the logo image under a closed path shaped like a can and Use Object>Envelope Distort>Make with Top Object
But before doing so copy the can shape and you might want to fill the copy which you send to the back and fill it wih a gradient and the set the top object with the distorted log to multiply in the transparency panel
Or use Use Effect>3D>Revolve and then use the Map art Feature
You have to turn your logo into a symbol but
if it has an opaque background you have to
Copy it it and paste in front or paste in back
then select both and make the top one an opacity mask by going to the Transparency and from the flyout choose Opacity Mask Make
and the choose clip and invert to make the background transparent then make the art a symbol
Then map the symbol to your 3D can  as such
If you need a tutorial I will do a video later but perhaps someone else can explain it better.

So as you can see these are all on the same date. We currently collect three indices every day, but a user with the click of a mouse could add another or take one away.
What I am trying to do is get output gives a date and the indices contained in a given day and their adj_close as a single return value from a query.
I have spent the day trying to wrap my head around PIVOT or LISTAGG but just can't seem to get a grasp of the damn thing. All the examples I have seen incluse sums and such and I need, nor in fact do I want anything summed. This would seem to come down to grouping by the trade_date and that where something is just not making sense.
More then an answer ( although an answer would be very helpful :) ) It would be great if someone could simply lay out how this is supposed to work. Uhm did I say an answer would be helpful <big cheesy smile >
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi,
Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements. Please test any code before you post it; there seem to be a lot of mistakes in those 4 statements. Don't forget to post the results you want from the sample data, and your version of Oracle.
One thing that is common to all forms of pivoting or string aggregation is that you need to know, for each row of input, to which row and which column(s) (or position(s)) of output it corresponds. Sometimes one or both of these are already in the data, but sometimes they have to be derived from the data. I'll assume you have one of each: that trade_date indicates the output row, and that the column you called timestamp (but which I'll call tmstmp, since timestamp isn't a good column name) can be used to tell the output position: the earliestt tmstmp goes on the left, the 2nd lowest tmstmp goes next, the 3rd lowest tmptmp goes next, and so on. We can use the analytic ROW_NUMBER function to assing consectuive numbers (1 for lowest, 2 for 2nd lowest, 3 for 3rd lowest, and so on) to the different tmstmps for each trade_date. I'll assume you don't know how many of these there will be on any given trade_date, and there may be different numbers of them on different trade_dates in the same output. I'll assume you're using Oracle 10.
If you have an unknown number of items, then string aggregation (concatenating all the values into one big sting column) is a lot easier and more robust than pivoting, so let's do it that way.
Here's one way to do string aggregation:
    WITH     got_c_num     AS
         SELECT     adj_close
         ,     trade_date
         ,     ROW_NUMBER () OVER ( PARTITION BY  trade_date
                             ORDER BY        tmstmp
                           )     AS c_num
         FROM     ti
--     WHERE     ...     -- if you need any filtering, put it here
    SELECT       trade_date
    ,       REPLACE ( SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH ( TO_CHAR (adj_close, '999990.000')
                )          AS indices
    FROM       got_c_num
    WHERE       CONNECT_BY_ISLEAF     = 1
    START WITH     c_num          = 1
    CONNECT BY     c_num          = PRIOR c_num + 1
         AND     trade_date     = PRIOR trade_date
    ORDER BY  trade_date
    ;Output from your sample data:
    TRADE_DAT INDICES
03-JAN-11       48.230     105.630     127.050CONNECT BY is used for parent-child realtionships of variable length within one table. Here, we have assigned c_num to be 1 for the first input row for each trade_date, 2 for the next, and so on. In the CONNECT BY uery above, we're saying that every parent-child-grandchild-... chain will start with a row numbered c_num=1, and that a row will be considered the child of another row if its c_num is 1 higher, and their trade_dates are the same. (That's what the START WITH and CONNECT BY clauses are doing.)
SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH gives a delimited list of items, starting from the root (the item with no parent, c_num=1) and showing the lineage down to each item in the original table that is descendedd from some root. That means we get 3 rows of output in this case: one showing just c_num=1, another with that same c_num=1 and c_num=2. and finally one with all 3 c_nums. We're only interested in the last one, the onme with no child, so the WHERE clause discards the others.
By using TO_CHAR in SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH, we get items that are padded to the same length. That way, when they are displayed, they will appear to line up in neat columns. SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH reuires that you delimit the output items with some string that cannot possibly occur in the items themselves. I chose '/', but, since we don't want to see those '/'s, I used REPLACE to get rid of them once we were finished doing the SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH.

  • How do I make a two color gradient?

I've been trying to create a two color gradient and I cannot find how to do so.

Make sure you have two SPOT swatches available, or else your gradient will contain 4 process colors. If you only want the two colors in the file, make sure you choose those colors in the gradient panel (in pull-down menu, choose swatches). Then your gradient will use only those two spot colors. Hope this helps.

    Hi 1283ar.
Unfortunately, iOS 7 is too hard to push for the iPhone 4 and therefore has a lot of effects turned off to try to get it to run as smoothly as possible.
However, it becomes better and better with each update coming but it's hard to do anything about the hardware on an already released phones.
If you still have trouble or think they are too hard. My tip is, if so, to restore your iPhone 4 and make a clean setup with no iCloud backup. But all your photos in a photostream so you can access it later.
