Help! My Mac suddenly went black after re-booting!

Hello,
I re-booted my Mac and my screen went black. I can hear the computer starting up but nothing is showing up on the monitor. Please help!
Gladpie

Hi Gladpie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Here's what I'd try...
iMac G5 SMU reset...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

This exact same thing happened to me too yesterday and trying what you said has just fixed it right now! Lucky I happened to come across this discussion while looking for a solution and has saved me a trip to Genius Bar tonight.
Thanks very much for the solution!
This problem has never happened before and I have just updated to iOS 7.0.3 about 2 weeks ago, so wondering if it may be an iOS 7 issue...

  • Okay my Macbook Pro computer screen suddenly went black but it came back on once I clicked a key what does this mean?

I need some assistance I just bout a refurbished Macbook Pro 17 inch and i have had it for roughly 2 weeks. My computer screen suddenly went black and comes back on after I press a key. What is the matter I need help cause im starting to get upset

    Hi,
is it possible that while working in photoshop, you accidentally hit this key-command?
    Control+shift+eject
This instantly darkens your screen to black. When you hit any key, the screen comes back, the behaviour you describe.
(It's a handy thing when your boss comes in and you don't want him to see your "confidential information".)
Maybe there a key command in photoshop you used and you missed a key?
(Or something was pressing on the right top corner of your keyboard (the eject key) en you pressed ctrl-shift to execute some other keycommand)

  • 4s screen went black after updating to iOS 8.2

So i updated my iPhone 4s to iOS 8.2 and the screen just went black after that. The phone is on but nothing appears to the screen and booting doesnt help. What should i do?

Try waiting about 30 - 60 minutes to make sure that it isn't just the software being installed. After that, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for 10 - 20 seconds until the apple logo appears.

  • My daughter's IPhone 5c suddenly went black.

My daughter's IPhone 5c suddenly went black and won't power back up.  She took it to the Verizon store, and they could find no physical damage to explain it.  I tried a holding the on button and home button at the same time, but nothing happened.  Any suggestions?

    Hi acoan,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
In order to resolve this issue where your daughter's iPhone 5c will not power on, I'd like you to please follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • My mac keeps turning black after 15 seconds

I have trouble even getting this questions in.  my Mac keeps going black after 15 seconds.   then I hit the key and it comes back .I need help!

What version of the Mac OS are you running?

  • My Mac just went black and the battery no longer work properly.

My Mac just went black and when it rebooted the battery seems to now work. The battery icon in the tob bar is gone and the button on the side to show battery percentage no longer works. The charger light doesn't work either. Why? How to fix? Is it a software or hardware problem?

Did you try any of the reset steps, etc. outlined in some of these forums or pretty much do nothing until it started working again? Also, do you have an iPhone 4 as Sam The AMAZING does?
(I'm desperately grasping straws to figure out whether or not I've exasperated all options and my iPhone is lost forever...)
    Thanks, L

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive.

  • Monitor went black after changing resolution

I changed my mac mini resolution to something higher. The screen went black and now it never shows anything on it anymore. I turned off the mac and the monitor but still the same problem when I turn the mac back on. How can I get to see the screen again?

    Hello Bill,
Welcome again to the Apple Forums.
Most likely you have picked a screen resolution and/or screen signal frequency that is not compatible to drive your monitor.
You have a couple options available to you.
    Option 1.
Restart your mini computer and turn off the monitor.
Let the mini computer start up completely.
The mini will detect no monitor is detected and default to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
Turn on your monitor after the mini has completed its start up.
    Option 2.
Restart you mini computer and leave the monitor turned on.
Hold down the shift key on the keyboard after you hear the start up tone.
The mini will start up in Safe Boot mode and switch to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
    Cheers

  • Computer screen went black after trying to adjust settings

Hello, I prior to upgrading to win8, I was using two screens with my b320.  After upgrading I could only use the main screen.  I was trying to adjust the settings to extend the view to the second monitor when...the main monitor b320 went black.  I know it is on in the background.  When I restart the screen flashed Lenovo...the window 8 emblem appears...then nothing, but the sound at startup.  I don't know what to do, since I can't SEE anything..can't adjust anything etc...any advise?

    hi Sassygurl,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Your display might be switched to the Second Screen (external monitor).
    Can you try to:
    1. Press the Windows Key+P and press the Up Arrow 3 times then press Enter (check this thread)
    2. Unplug the external monitor and change the screen source.to PC Screen
    Link to picture
    3. If same problem, try to boot into safe mode by prssing Shift+F8 (might require a few attempts as dicussed here)
    Let me know your findings.
    Cheers

  • My iBook G4 suddenly went black and won't restart.

This afternoon my Mac iBook G4 was running on house power (plugged into outlet) and it suddenly went blank.  It won't restart.  Any suggestions what I should check out before I spend good money on a repair shop?

I'm new to MACs, but might I suggest that you first check the power ar the outlet and then the power at the end of the power cord.
My old iBook gets only to the Apple stary-up screen.  If you can get that far, please try the suggestions I got through the forum from Old Comm Guy

It's stalling in the boot somewhere.
First thing to try is safe boot by holding down the shift key when you power up.  Safe boot
loads a minimal set of kernel extensions and also checks and attempts to correct problems
in the boot volume by running fsck which is a Unix function that checks directories.  This can
take a little while longer than a normal boot, so give the gear a chance to spin for a bit.
If you get to a safe boot, then it would be a good time to open Disk Utility in
the /Applications/Utilities folder and repair permissions on the boot volume.  Then command
a restart and see what happens.
If things are not yet working, either because Safe Boot didn't work or it worked and you can't
boot, then you should try a PRAM reset, by holding down the cmd-option-P-R keys at power
on until you hear the boot tone (chime) a second time, then see how boot goes.
Finally, you can start to troubleshoot a boot stall by booting into "verbose mode" by holding
down the cmd-V key combination at power up until you see a black Unix terminal display on
the screen, then watching to see where things hang up.  You may not know what they mean,
but there are folks on the discussions who can figure them out."

  • PowerBook went black after attempted disc insertion

I got really scared this morning, because my PowerBook just went black without any possibility to switch it on again. Now, it seems to work again.
This is what happened: I had several apps running, music was playing over my Airport and my computer was plugged into the power net.
I wanted to burn a cd, so I tried to insert one— with no success. For some reason the disc tray wouldn't grab it. I tried several times, but resorted to closing the PowerBook to make it sleep. I woke it up again after a few seconds, hoping to wake up the disc tray as well.
Nothing happened. No hardware sounds, no display, and no 'respiration light' to signify it was still sleeping. It seemed to be switched off. Trying to turn it on did not work for about five minutes.
I checked if nothing was overheated, the battery was alive etc. I tried to switch it on again and BANG, the disk tray made this horrible sound and everything was back to how it was.
Can anyone explain this phenomenon? Because I'm scared it will happen again or that maybe it's a permanent fault.
PS: Posted to wrong topic, can't migrate.

I have been burning cds succesfully again, so it must be a temporary error. I have no clue as to what might have caused it.
What was funny is that switching my machine on worked only after I had turned it upside down. Another post about a malfunctioning disc tray also mentoined this 'trick'.

  • Mac Pro intermediate black screen at boot after installing mountain lion

I have a 2008 Mac Pro tower, but since installing Mountain Lion I now get a random black screen at boot. Unplugging the apple cinema 20' power supply for 15 minutes seems to clear the fault. Have had no such problems with other OS until Mountain Lion, seems OK when booting to Snow Lepoard on my other drive?
    Anyone have the same fault?

Thanks for trying the help! I tried every version of start up, but with no screen it was no good..
Finally solved the problem, it was the ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card that was dying a very slow death.
Replaced it this morning with a GT120 Nvidia.
Anyone with this card should Google it, as apple did a big recall on these..

  • IPad suddenly went black and want turn off or on

New iPad Air 2 screen suddenly went blank and want respond or turn on or off. Hook up to Mac and iTunes recognises its there etc.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Try resetting your device: Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). If the Apple appears, the reset is in progress, and the Slide to Unlock screen will display shortly.
Be sure that your device is charged. If you are not sure, then hook it up to a charger and wait 5 minutes before resetting.

  • Help! MacbookPro screen went black

I am lost, my computer was on sleep mode and I went to turn it back on and the screen went black even though I could see a faint view of my screen in the background of the black screen, it was also making a lot more noise than normal so I turned it off and then it wouldn't boot up. It would start too for about 2 seconds, literally, and then the screen would go back dark. I took it to be fixed and had the hardrive replaced but it won't work. Is my computer a lost cause, is my motherboard damaged? Help ... What can I do I need it for school!

Apparently the folks who fixed it didn't. So take it back.
