  • USB ports only work when the device is connected at start up

    I have a dv5-1110em laptop which I have upgraded to Windows 7.
If i connect a USB device before I start the machine then it works fine as long as I do not unplug it.
If I unplug a device and then need to use it again I have to restart the laptop.
If there are no devices plugged in at start then the ports will not work with any device.
I have installed the new BIOS.
I have uninstalled the USB ports and then re installed them.
I have been searching for an answer to this for months and found nothing that solves my problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem.  Installed windows 7 professional over windows 7 home preminu.
Only see USB device if it's plugged in at startup.

  • 8520 curve usb port only working with live battery

    Hello
I have 4 8520 curves that when a charger is inserted without a battery, nothing happens. Only when a live battery is inserted does it charge. I have also noted that when a battery is inserted on these 4, the keypad lights flash then the red light comes on. Any ideas as to what is the problem here?

No matter what, nothing will work unless there is a minimum charge in the battery. If a battery is depleted, you can't do any processes, even if you have a charger attached to the BB. As I recall, 10% is the minimum...but I could be recalling incorrectly. And what the BB screen can display will change as well with the level of charge in the battery...with insufficient charge in the battery, it will not feed any power to the device...hence, no display.
Further, if a battery fully depletes, then it can actually be damaged, even to the point of being rendered completely useless. Likewise, as batteries age, their ability to hold adequate charge and work with the BB can degrade.
The advice would be to try what you are attempting, but with already fully charged batteries. If all goes well, then cease using those batteries that do not provide proper functionality.

  • Usb will only work for powered devices

I am having an issue to where my USB ports will only work for devices that have power supplied to them, ie an external hard drive that has a power adapter and not for devices that do not have power supplied to them.  I was seeing if anyone could help me resolve this issue?
    I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch Late 2011 model w/ the 2.2 Ghz i7 Processor.

    Eustace Mendis wrote:
This is simply a case of the USB ports not being able to provide enough power. I do not know if there is a way to change this.
This is highly unlikely, the USB specification (to which Apple adhere) requires a constant 1 amp at 5 volts, a peak of 2 amps for a brief period is available. All reputable manufacturers adhere to this spec, it is more likely a fault condition.
To the OP, reset the Pram http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reboot the machine and try again.
If this brings no relief you should follow Oglethorpes advice and take it to Apple for repair.

  • USB Ports not working with specific devices

So this one has me scratching my head. My USB ports on the back of my iMac are working except for a few devices. 1 being a logitech USB receiver, and 1 being a usb mp3 player. When I plug the received into the iMac the keyboard won't work, but when I plug my USB hub into the same USB port and the receiver into the hub it works fine. The mp3 player isn't working in any usb/hub (so that's a mook point).
Here's what I've tried to resolve this issue:
    1. Reset iMac
    2. Reset PRAM
    3. Try every usb port on the back of the iMac
None of these have fixed my issue. Plugging it into the hub isn't a huge deal, but I'd like the option to use my USB ports as I wish without having to deal with this. Anyone have advice on a solution?

It is not a matter of using your USB ports as you wish, it is a matter of what you are plugging into them and the power demands that what you plug into them makes on the system.
Not all USB ports or devices are created equal. How many ports are you using? What exactly are you plugging into the ports? What is the power demand of each item that you are plugging into each port? Are any of the USB devices self powered from their own separate power supply? Are all of the devices dependent upon the iMac for power?
It sounds to me that you have too many high power devices demanding more power through the ports than the iMac can accommodate. Is the USB hub self powered? If so, that is probably why it resolves your issue with the Logitech Unified receiver. There is very little info on this device on the Logitech website, so I could not ascertain its power demands.

  • Left USB port only works when entering BIOS

Hi all -- I have a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5106, the LEFT USB port only works when I enter the BIOS at boot-time. If I disconnect the drive, i.e. eject it and then remove it, the port stops working. The other two ports at the right work fine. I've tested this with known good flash drives and Kensington USB trackball that work fine on four other computers, and the other two USB ports. I'm thinking its software/BIOS because hardware would fail intermittently, I could not get the port to work if there was a failing connection. As stated, this work-around succeeds EVERY time. I have not upgraded the bios. Has anyone had this problem?

If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, contact support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 457-7777.

  • One of USB ports not working with wireless mouse USB receiver (MBP mid-2009

    Hi,
I've got a weird problem with one of the USB ports (the one next to SD card slot). I use a Logitech VX Nano (wireless) mouse.
When I plug the usb receiver to the USB port, no device can be detected. But when trying the other USB port, all works fine.
I also tried using a usb extension cable with the USB port (problematic one). All works fine again.
The same happens with windows xp pro.
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,

    Is the monitor powered?

  • My USB ports only work if i unplug them, swap them around and plug them back in. Its driving me crazy! I have done a pram and smc  reset, reinstalled lion and spent two hours on the phone to apple. Now what?!!

I have a optical lead coming out of the headphone jack in to a dac that goes in to my amp (which has speakers connected) so i can listen to music. The Dac is powered by usb. Recently the sound stopped working. I called tech support and they suggested the resets (pram and smc) and i reinstalled lion and reinstalled itunes, deleted audio files, blah blah blah.
So now when the computer turns off, or indeed randomly sometimes, I have to uplug the usb cable and put it in a different port, it then works. If I then put it back in to the original port it still works. Totally baffled. Can anyone please help. i have 3 children who are getting very bored at the sight of my growling perplexed face and the sight of my back!

I don't know why that happens, since I don't own products of this type...  However, if the sole purpose of the USB connection is to provide power (not a data connection), can you connect it to something that just provides power, such as a USB power adapter (like the one that comes with iPhone)?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD810LL/A/apple-5w-usb-power-adaptor
Or, if it needs to be connected to a USB port, it might work properly if you get a self-powered USB hub and connect the USB cable to the DAC to the hub.  The hub would act like a "buffer" between the DAC and iMac.  It needs to be "self-powered" (comes with its own power supply). Here's one such USB hub
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/USB2HB7PRO/
Do you have anything else connected to USB (other than standard keyboard and mouse)?  If so, have you tried it with ONLY the DAC connected, to see if the problem recurs?  USB devices can interfere with each other.

  • USB ports only working intermittently

I have an MSI Z97 gaming 7 motherboard, the USB ports on the motherboard only work intermittently, MSI support have suggested I upgrade to the latest bios, which I believe is MS7916IMS.172 and they have sent me a link for this, however I want to use the forum flash tool this is what I used to flash from 1.1 to 1.5 and was very easy to do, could someone give me the correct link to this bios that uses the forum flash tool, I have seen this in posts made by Svet and other forum members for other bios

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
    Steps I've taken:
    Disk Persmission
    PRAM
    SMC
    Reapplied the 10.9.2 update
    Sent feedback to Apple

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

  • Acer C710 - USB Ports not working with patched kernel

    I have an...
    Acer C710-844G01ii
I have replaced the original SSD with a Mushkin 120GB SSD (MKNSSDCR120GB-7)
I've used John Lewis' script at https://johnlewis.ie to flash the firmware. It works great. It loads 64 bit dual arch iso (2014.10.01) written to a USB flashdrive (Well, I'm actually using SD card in a USB reader. Not sure if that makes a difference) without having to utilize the workaround listed on the Chromebook wiki page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … stallation). I just create a regular arch bootable usb and it seems to work fine. I can use the bootable USB tools. I can install arch to the hard disk fine. (I did this a couple of times on the original SSD that came with the chromebook before I replaced it, so I know it works without having to change the SSD).
The problem I'm having occurs after I install the patched kernel (linux-chromebook-3.16.4-1-x86_64 or linux-mainline-chromebook-3.17-1-x86_64 I've tried them both. Both times I wiped the hard drive and went through the entire install process from scratch). After booting, everything loads up fine except that I lose functionality of my USB ports. The custom BIOS still reads the arch bootable USB if I choose to boot into it. If I boot from the hard drive though, as soon as the patched kernel loads, the USB ports are not working.
    The output of
    dmesg | tail
is the same before and after inserting a flash drive into a usb port.
    Running the command
    lsusb
    gives output
    unable to initialize libusb: -99

Updated the system, now using arch kernel 3.17.1-1
    Problem still exists.

  • Front USB doesn't work with some devices

    Hi,
I have 2 front USB ports and have wired everything correctly (not using the 10th pin).  I tried my digital camera and the maxtor USB hard drive and they both work.  When I try plugging the Adaptec VideOh! USB capturing device, it doesn't seem to work right.  It is detected and the drivers for it installed correctly, but I can't capture any video.  When I unplugged it and plugged it to any of the 4 ports on the back, it works fine.  The D-bracket ports also worked ok with the device.  I wired the 2 front usb ports the same way as the d-bracket (they both have the same color wirings).  The front ports seemed to work ok with the other devices I mentioned, just not the Adaptec Videoh! USB device.  There is a JUSB1 and a JUSB2 on the motherboard.  Are both the same?  I have JUSB1 for the D-bracket and JUSB2 for the front usb ports.  Both are wired the same.  I just wonder why the Adaptec device can work with the D-bracket and not the front USB ports even when they are connected the same way.  Any suggestions?

At the cable end that plugs into the motherboard snip the jumpers between pins 7-9 and 8-10. See Wonkanoby's signature for a link to diagrams.

  • USB Port only works on Reboot

I've been trying to put some files onto Thumbdrives, and my external hard drive, but My Mac won't recognize them when I plug them in. It will, however, recognize them when I reboot.
When I plug one of the two in I get a screen that says
"A storage volume is attempting to mount on your computer. Do you want to allow this volume to mount?"
    I always click Allow
Then another screen pops up saying "InternetCleanupAgent requires that you type your password."
I type in the password and push ok. All the screens go away, and usually this is when my USB would pop up on the desktop, only now...it doesn't.

  • USB3.0 Port only works with driver uninstalled?

One of the 3.0 ports of the 4 USB3.0 does not work when the driver is installed. But works without the driver. Why is that?

Using Win 8 or 8.1 OS? It has it's own drivers for USB 3.0.
As a side note, you have provided '0' information as to what platform or system is involved.

  • HT1349 Can a USB SuperDrive only work with a mac or can it work with other computers?

I received one as a Christmas gift but have an Asus computer. I want to know if it can work for it before I open it or have to return it.

Only with those Macs that do not come with optical drives.
