HELP - My sound is gone, both audibly and in Prefs

My sound has crapped out on me. I thought maybe my speakers had just gotten unpluged but it's everything. In the Sound section of Prefs. It no longer shows the digital and analog options... it doesn't show anything in the box at all.
Is my sound board dead? I didn't know Macs even had sound cards at least stand-alone units. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• miniDV tape Camera - FireWire
• .avi, .wmv, .mpeg4, etc
My general list on this - May be not Your problem at all ?
*No Audio in iMovie*
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
Work around -
• Select needed audio to one new playlist
• Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
• Use this in the movieproject
Other origins are
1. strange/ailient file formats as -
• .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
• Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
• Close iMovie and other programs
• Start GarageBand
• Make a new GB-project and play some notes
• Close GB and Save
• Now try iMovie again
3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
a. in iMovie pref - deselect ”Playback via Camera”
b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
without me knowing why.
Stuttering audio and video
1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)

I have a Probook 4440s with windows 8 pro(64 bit) with IDT high definition codec installed. Yesterday when i was playing some songs i noticed that the sound was coming from both headphones and speakers even when my headphones are plugeed in and my lappy was having no such problems a few hours earliers while i was watching a movie. Please help..

It may be because you have both the internal speakers and headphones enabled at the sametime on your laptop. This might just happen automatically when you plug your headphones in. You need to manage your audio devices on your laptop.
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sounds> Manage Audio Devices> Playback Tab (which should already be selected)
In the playback tab there should be a list of all the audio devices you are using on your computer. Right click on the one you don't want to use and click disable. This should stop the sound coming from that audio device.
Remember: You will need to enable that audio device if you want to listen to sound through it again. Your internal speakers won't work once you enable them again. This might also be the case with your headphones. You may also have to do this every time your plug in a device or once you restart your computer.
Another note: Sometimes disabled devices will not show up on the audio device list so once you disable a device it will dissappear. This is an easy fix too. Just right click on an audio device and make sure show disabled devices and show disconnected devices is checked.

(I was using a computer with Windows XP to explain the instructions but it should be similar with your Windows Operating System. You may however have to play around a little on your computer because it may be slightly different)

L channel sound comes through both L and R speakers after installing IDT High Definition Audio Codec

I noticed a sound problem on my laptop. The R channel works as expected but the L channel is split between the L and R speakers. After checking several different possibilities I narrowed the problem down to the IDT High Definition Audio Codec that I downloaded from the HP driver support page for my notebook model and operating system.
I uninstalled the IDT High Definition Audio Codec and restarted. This forced Windows to resort to using its generic "HD Audio Device" default. When I did this the sound was equally split between the L and R speakers as I would expect - L channel 100% though L speaker, R channel 100% though R speaker. I then re-downloaded the IDT High Definition Audio Codec from HP (sp59654.exe), re-installed it, and restarted. Immediately the sound problem was back - while the R channel comes 100% though the R speaker, the L channel is split between L and R speakers.
Please note this has nothing to do with adjusting speaker "balance". Both L and R channel volumes were set to 100% while investigating this problem. It's definitely some sort of incompatibilty between the IDT High Definition Audio Codec and Windows 8 64-bit or the sound hardware in the HP Envy DV6.

Here is what I would recommend you trying. Go to device manager and uninstall the audio driver. Once it is uninstalled, go to the device manager toolbar and select "Scan for hardware changes". After it completes, reboot the computer. Once the computer is rebooted, test the audio and let me know if that helped.

OMG Help notes are all gone from outlook and i phone I can't get them back

I havent synced my iphone in a long time. I used to have an itouch (gave it to my son) and everytime I synced it on itunes it was replacing what was on my itouch in outlook onto my iphone getting rid of the recent stuff it was a mess. I have had some stuff going on and i thought i should sync now since imp stuff going on. well I deleted what was in outlook hoping to just put what was on my iphone into outlook but it deleted everything i had in it on both phone and outlook except for what was actually added on phone not even the stuff I have typed in from older messages to update like all my blood pressures recently it is all gone, I am ready to freak out is there anyway to undo a sync or a delete and put it back on my phone, help please

You could just restore your Outlook PST file from the latest backup of your computer. This will not bring back what was on your phone.
This is what sync does. If you delete i in one place, it will delete it all the way down the line. If it were to bring it back from the phone after you told it you didn't want it anymore in outlook, what would be the point?

Help with a PCR using both 401KL and 401KS

Has anyone set up a supplemental savings plan that begins deductions when 401k limits hit either 401KL or 401KS? I have it setup using 401KS and it works great but unfortunately that scenario is only for one employee out of 48. I really need to be able to compare against both 401KS and 401KL to fully automate this. I'm new to PCR's so any advice would be greatly appreciated...

[SOLVED] Pulseaudio, sound coming from both headphone and laptop speak

I switched to PulseAudio a while back, everything is working fine, except I can't find a way to get sound "only" in headphones.
"Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" has three Ports: 'Analog Output', 'Speakers' and 'headphones'. Choosing Speakers give no sound, and choosing Analog output and headphones gives sound from both headphones (if it's attached) and laptop speakers.
I have pavucontrol installed but can't find any option for it in it either. Any suggestions?

That code looks specific to that sound card, though I tried it anyways, by changing
device=hw:M2496
to
device=hw:1
(where 1 is index of my card), but now I can't get any sound from my sound card. I have commented out those lines, removed .config/pulse, restarted pulseaudio, restarted laptop, but I still can't get any sound from that soundcard anymore. (EDIT: Apparently sound was muted in Kmix (thought it wasn't in pavucontrol), don't know how that works, maybe I missed something, anyways, I am again getting sound, but everything else is same.)
And my original problem still remains.
I am assuming if I know the names of channels (for headphone and laptop speaker), I can create a new sink/source and use that to route the sound properply, but I can't figure out exactly how to do all that.

Sound Coming From Both Headphone and Speaker (Elitebook 8460p)

I have windows 7 64-bit and when I plug headphones into the jack in the front right, the sound comes out of both the speaker and headphones. Here's what I've tried to fix the problem:
1) BIOS update to P20
2) Audio driver update to latest on HP site
3) Make headphones not the communication default
I'm running out of options here, and it seems like nothing will solve this. Thanks

I recently downgraded my Pavilion dv2615nr from Vista to Windows XP. Managed to install all the drivers and then followed advice from CherylG (to whom I owe my ability to do anything with this laptop, frankly) to get the sound working.
My remaining problem is that plugging in my headphones doesn't cut off the sound through my speakers.
I have tried reinstalling the drivers following Cheryl G's advice but it returns me to the same problem.
Can anyone help a newbie?

That driver is known good and I used it in my notebook (see my sig)
However, that driver have poor quality when I use mic for chatting.

Help! Sound went Out on HDTV and Surround

I have an LG HDTV, Blu-Ray DVD, Surround Sound and Cable Box connected along with a Harmon all in one remote control. Everything was working fine last night and then no sound. The DVD sound works. The TV "test" sound works (but I cannot get the sound to work through the TV speakers if I turn off the surround sound). I have tried plugging and unplugging the HDMI cable. I can't figure it out and need help! Thanks.

Click once on your desktop and then hit F1. When the help window opens type in sound. You should be able to try some of the articles to determine what is causing the issue.

Hi Eric, it is Safari but I thunk I've solved it by dragging the autofill into the safari toolbar and clicking on it when I want to use the fearture. Nothing else worked. this OS is a crock as far as I am concerned.

Using both Picasa and Aperture

I am looking for help so I can use both Picasa and Aperture on the same Mac. I am using Picasa on my Mac and have all my photo and video files stored on a Time Capsule under a folder called "Pictures." I set Picasa to "watch" these folders for new files and changes.
I have installed a trial version of Aperture and would like to see if I can use both it and Picasa on the same machine. I would like to keep my photos on the Time Capsule (I have about 300 gb of files, so I don't want to put them on my 500gb drive on the Mac), so I created a Aperture Library on the Time Capsule. As a test, I imported one subfolder (about 20 files) from the Pictures folder and noticed that Aperture made copies of each of these files. Is there a way to set things up so that I keep a single copy of each file without making the duplicates? Thanks.

Two things you should keep in mind:
The Aperture Library itself should not be located on a network volume (e.g. Time Capsule), see:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
You can however store the master image files on a network volume, e.g. in your Pictures Folder on TIme Capsule.
In the import panel of Aperture it is possible to specify, that the imported image files should be left in their current location:
This way you could share the master image files (not the edited versions) with Picasa, provided you do not alter the shared files in any way.
But frankly, I do not see any reason to do this - Picasa would be very much redundant - to keep both programs synched propery will give you more trouble than benefits. If you only want to use the Picasa web albums, then you can do that by exporting or using the Picasa plug-in from Aperture.
Perhaps you may care to elaborate a little on what exactly you want to achieve by using both programs simultaniously.

Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

I have been having the same problem as the original poster. After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
Here is a run-down of my process:
0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!
