Get or open a program that allows you to do word processing, and start typing away. It's no different than using Windows or Linux, but it's definitely not texting so besides typing spaces you'll have to give your thumbs a rest on this one.

Sorry, I'm new to the Mac world. I recently got a new IMAC and installed my Epson CX5800F printer and it worked fine. Then a few weeks later I installed Windows7 through Bootcamp and I think it reconfigured a port or something and now I get a communication error and it won't print. I'm new to the MAC world. I turned my computer on from 'sleep' mode, and a window was up stating that the IOS disk was full; asked me to force quit, then it just froze. It's been 2 hours. Help! I'm worried about losing photos/videos of my children. Im not sure if there's something special I need to do once I turn it back on; in the meantime, its still on... which I'm afraid the picture on the screen will burn into the screen. Does that happen on iMac's? Thx!
Try a hard reset. ( holding Power til it restarts)
Once to your desktop. Click the Apple icon >> About this mac >> More info>> Storage
Once you see what you have the most of. Try to see what you can delete.
Open up any folder>>all files>> or buy an external to store more data.
Once deleting make sure you empty your trash.
If you are new and its a new computer, you might need to bring it to a store for further assistence.
Coast Guard Mechanic w/ an Apple Problem -
there is panel in the upper right corner of my screen that says 'copy' preparing to duplicate to "desktop". I clicked stop three days ago and it is still trying to stop. Tried to 'force quit' does not show up in finder, looked in activity monitor but i am not sure how it is listed. I am new to the mac world.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions. -
i have a canon hf10 and need to be able to transfer my video from my camera to my computer so I can burn them to dvd is there a step by step process? i'm new 2 the mac world. I already have an itunes account on my laptop but have been setup on a mac and have songs that have not been purchased from the itunes store, I cannot get the songs from my iPhone onto my itunes account on the mac. how can I do this?
You copy them from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.

New to the Mac and need a little help!
I recently upgraded our pc in the house to windows vista. Before the upgrade I could use remote desktop to access the files on a shared drive. Now I cannot. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using a mini Mac with 10.4.9 on a 1.873 core duo mini.
Using remote desktop on XP allowed me to access and move files from a shared D:\ drive that Vista will not allow me to see. HELP??? the drive used to be accessible through the finder.Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm a little confused, are you running the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software on your Mac mini under Mac OS X? So, after the upgrade to the PC, the Mac mini can no longer connect with the same software? So your question is actually about how to re-configured Windows Vista settings so the drive is available again to the Mac client?

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer. -
Received a macbook pro and im trying to log onto my wireless network and it just ain't happening. the mac is for the missus for xmas day and im setting it up while she is away, however i cant connect to my home wireless network which is WEP encrypted 128-bit. It has originally been configured on a PC (I know boo hiss!). I'm putting all the correct info in and im proper scratching me head now. Any help would be greatly appreciated on this. PS My wireless router is a Sitecom Broadband 2.4GHz, 140g. The mac can find the network on the scan and displays it but other than that, no go. Boo Hoo:(i haven't tried it with the Ethernet cable as yet but im sure the wep key is ok, ive looked up my settings to confirm it is wep. I can connect other devices to the network no problem such as my Nintendo DS and PSP, Laptop PC etc, just not the mac.
Its back in its box now so ill have to wait to xmas day when the mrs opens it, its hers ya see and today was the only opportunity i had to get connected and play about with it!!! So ill try again on xmas day!!!

I recently bought the Mac OS x version 10.9.5 a few weeks ago and before then I have been reading up on wether or not to get a malware protection or not. It has been mixed reviews as I have seen that some say the os X has built in malware protection. also, I've seen that many people recommend the AV Sophos. I was about to install it but then I decided otherwise and that brought me here. So, a few questions;
1. Should I install Sophos
2. This computer is used as luxury, not work. So, the only websites I get on are YouTube and facebook. Can I "catch" anything on those websites?
3. How common is Malware/Trojans/phishing/etc?
4. What are some ways to protect my computer? (I have clocked all pop ups, disabled java ((I never ran it but I made sure it wasn't on my mac)) and take precautions while browsing the web.)
5. Should I update to Yosemite? (As of now, I have Mavericks 10.9.5) Would I be more susceptible to Malware if I don't update?

Quite common, and that's nothing new. Nothing can protect you from common scams and phishing exploits, other than your own intelligence. Malware of various descriptions is also fairly common, but that's nothing new and once again only you can prevent installation of sordid junk.

As you wrote, "taking precautions while browsing the web" is one effective defense, to which you should add other common sense defenses explained below. Most of them are equally applicable to any computer or communications device, not just Macs.
Yosemite will result in nothing but improvements over Mavericks. Back up your system before contemplating an OS upgrade. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support. As of right now Mavericks is still completely supported and upgrading will leave you no more or less protected than you are now.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.

Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -

It depends on a few things 1st Your Mac must have a Superdrive which is a CD/DVD Read and Write Hardware.
Next If you have to use the Finder, or Software to Burn it. If it is a Commercial DVD Movie there is Software out there but we are not able to talk about it here because it is a Violation of the Terms Of Use.
If it is not I suggest you use the Finder and it won't cost you anything but the Blank DVD.
