Help optimizing my PC for HD editing

Recently, I upgraded the cameras & recording system in our city council chambers to HD. My current PC was
purchased to edit SD footage (480p), and it excelled at rendering the footage. This same PC struggles to handle HD footage. Here's some info:
Council recording system: Data Video HDR-50 (http://www.datavideo.us/products/players-recorders/hd-recorders-players/hdr-50-rackmounted -sd-hd-sdi-hard-drive-video-recorder.html), 1080i recording (don't remember the bitrate off the top of my head, but I think it's around 20)

C drive is the Raid 0 array: Contains OS & Apps (Premiere)
D drive is video storage. All projects & scratch disks are stored on the D drive.
Our last meeting was 2 1/2 hours long (approx 129 GB), and after some simple editing (cuts & overlays, no color correction), it took approximately 15 hours to convert to 480p 4:3 format for TV (we are still running an SD TV server). After that finishes, I export using the Vimeo HD setting for the web (H.264), and that took more than 25hrs.
My questions are:
1. I know HD footage is much more hardware intensive than SD, but are my rendering times normal?
2. Are there any configurations I can change in Premiere to speed up the rendering time?
   (a) If not, what could be upgraded on this system to improve rendering times? SSD? (this PC is due to be replaced this July, and I'll then use this system as a secondary workstation)

Well.... the biggest limiter will be how much you can spend...
But, you need to look for a higher end processor and a fairly decent graphics card.
No new computers come with any decent graphics program.

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.

Help with apple script for Chapter Markers (on each edit)

My goal:
Add for each edit in the sequence a chapter marker til the end of the sequence.
(Bonus track would be: Name the marker like the current clipname )
so far I could work it out, with a lot of googling.... but:
Not working: character "a" is not typed, no idea why ?

And: I need something like a loop til the end of the sequence

Use Automator. It's great for repetitious tasks (like the one you've described), and it's very user-friendly. Open Automator, create a new workflow that executes the action you want, and you can apply that action to the resources you wish to edit.

Which 2013 Macbook Pro for Video Editing? "Help"

Hello, I am new to the Apple forums and this is my first post. I'm a 19 Years Student and I'm actually attending a cinematography and television school
I am looking for a Macbook Pro 15" for Video Editing, the sowftware I'm be using and studying are Avid Media Composer, Adobe AE and Premiere , and Photoshop.
My budget is around 2500 - 3000 Euros, And I've been reading every kind of post about the Macbook Retina 2012 and Macbook Pro 2012, but I Really don't know what to get, and if some video editors here can help me would be awesome! So, Let's getting started:
( Both models "Costs" the same, I don't mind paying 100-200 more Euros for a 2500 Macbook so i'd love to have to find the perfect balance with Performance/Design and everything else!)
I'd Like to get a Retina to be honest, but I know every kind of problem that the retina has at this moment: Expensive Repair Costs, High Framerate Drops, Choppy Interface, Burn-in screen and ghosting. I've seen by myself these errors and I don't know if there's a true fix, my opinion is that the GPU is not enough to use smootly the Retina Resolution, and I'm afraid that If I'll buy a macbook retina, the low and suffering GPU will decrease a lot the performance of these software when Rendering, Exporting, and when working with big files. ( I'm asking you if this is true, because I don't have a macbook so I couldn't test by myself how a rMBP works under pressure for atleast 3 hours with one of these softwares, my experience with retina is limited to an Apple Store Experience ). Happy that Final Cut X and CS6 Suit now Supports Retina anyway!
But, Since the retina has all these problems, I'll not be buying THIS version of the retina. I've readed every kind of rumor and even talked to some Genius in my Apple Stores, in June 2013 the New Haswell processor might come, I don't know exactly how it works but Intel says that the GPU performance might be increased by 20 - 40%. Do you think it will resolve all the problems that this rMBP has? In The apple store I've also heard that in June 2013 the Macbook Pro Line will be RETINA ONLY, and this is going to be a issue for me if the retina will still have all these little problems, because I don't want to buy a machine that makes me work bad
The Macbook Retina I'd Like to get by now is the 15" Quad 2.7Ghz 16 Ram 512 SSD = 2800 Euros
The Other Macbook is the Macbook PRO 2012, It still good looking, but placing inside it an SSD makes it so **** expensive, and apple won't put inside more than 8 GB of Ram inside of it, so, If I'd choose to buy one and buy the 16 GB of Ram from 3rd Part, and is aroudn 200 euros, Plus a 600 Euros Samsung 512 SSD since the Apple one costs 700 euro. And it doesn't come with retina display, remember, it's not needed I know and the screen is gorgeus, but I feel and fear that the Macbook Pro hardware is outdated, and might not catch the other in the next years ( I might be wrong, but I believe that Retina motherboard and Retina Chipset are more Fast/Good than the 2012 Macbook Pro, even if everything is glued in there and is not user-friendly )
If I buy the 2012 Macbook Pro By following Apple Products, I'd be spending 3000 Euros, and I found it too much since It doesn't come with retina, I might be wrong.
If I buy the 2012 Macbook Pro By placing the Ram and SSD by myself i'd be spending 2800 Euros, but 3rd part hardware is not under apple warranty.
If I buy the 2012 Macbook Pro WITHOUT SSD, but a 750 GB 7200 and by placing 8 GB Ram It's 2500 Euros.
So, here it is, I don't know what to do :\ Actually I don't like the retina and I hope that in June 2013 they'll change the Processor, Fix all the problems, and maybe add a solid Graphic Card, ( I doubt the'll change the graphic card, just the integrated intel graphic card might change, not the Nvidia for sure, because the rMBP thin )
But, If I wait June 2013 I Fear that the 2012 Macbook Pro will disappear, and if there's only a Not-So-Good Retina left, I'll really not know if to buy it or wait more monts.

I edit video and am familiar with the MacBookPro models. Both the 15" MBP and the 15" rMBP will be fine for editing with Avid Media Composer, Adobe AE, Premiere and Photoshop. But there are some differences that may be important to you, depending on the external equipment you plan to use:
The regular MBP has the following i/o ports:
1 FW800 port
1 Thunderbolt port
2 USB3 ports
1 SDXC slot
Audio line-in port
Audio line-out/headphone port
The rBMP has the following i/o ports:
2 Thunderbolt ports (no native FW port)
2 USB3 ports
1 SDXC slot
Headphone output port (no audio-in)
HDMI output port (output, not input)
The lack of audio line-in port and native FW800 in the rMBP rule out that model as far as I am concerned.
Also, you need to be aware that you cannot upgrade the RAM memory after purchase. There are no RAM slots in the current MacBook Pro models (rMBP included), so no after-market upgrades are possible.
I would not recommend purchasing the very expensive SSD. I suggest configuring a MBP with the 750GB, 7200rpm SATA hard drive and invest the savings in external hard drives - you are going to need them for video work & backup.

Optimizing for AVCHD editing

I am trying to switch to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 4.0.0 for my editing from Final Cut Pro but working with AVCHD files is a real bear. I don't mind so muc having to initially Render the Work Area in order to make editing smoother, but every minor edit requires you to re-render the clip, which for me averages 10 minutes. If I have to do this 5-6 times per video, I have added an hour of waiting around to my workflow. Are there any settings, preferences, or best practices for working with AVCHD files that would help make this process closer to the experience I have with Final Cut Pro? I am not opposed to even converting the videos to a different format if that would help so long as it doesn't dramatically affect the workflow time. Right now we would rather spend money on a high end PC than on a high end Mac, but if we can't make editing easier on a PC we will be forced to stick with Final Cut Pro.

Look at the system configurations at http://ppbm4.com benchmark to see what is in your terms high end. Do the benchmark yourself and submit the results to Bill (you can also send them to me by private mail or here if you want). That way you will know how your system performs and whether further tuning is needed to handle your AVCHD material.

Need help choosing the best laptop or desktop for video editing.

Hi guys. I'm a videographer and am in need of upgrading my current Dell Dimension 8300 desktop to either another desktop or a laptop. My current Dell is just too slow. It takes forever to render a video.
Anyhow, what do you guys recommend for video editing? I'd like something with plenty of hard drive space, plenty of memory, and a powerful video card. There are just too many to choose from and was hoping to get some feedback.

You can find a fairly cheap quad core desktop with a nice video card. So if you need something that will last a while and not cost too much I would go this route.
If you want a laptop, put yourself in one of these categories: someone who needs high mobility/battery life (14 in screen or smaller), someone who needs high mobility with a big screen (15.4in), or someone who needs a powerful computer with a big screen (17-18.4 in).
Don't worry too much about laptop brands, only a handful of them actually make their own laptops, most of the big brands use the same two or three laptop manufacturers.
Get the most powerful intel processor you can afford, and put either a 9 series nvidia, or an ati radeon 4800 series in, four gb of ram, and a 7200 rpm hard disk.
After that it really comes down to price and personal style, I would stay away from the hp laptops, the brand that they use doesn't do so well making the internal components.
Here are some good picks.
1) ASUS G Series G50VT-X3 (15.4in)
2) Sager 5793 (17in)
3)ASUS N80 Series N80Vn-X5 (14.1in)
Asus actually manufactures their own laptops, and my experience with them has been spectacular. The Sager is a rebranded Clevo, which is one of the brands alienware, falcon northwest, and other high end companies use.

Optimal Ethernet Network for FCS Usage

Hi I recently purchased a G5 Dual 1.8 G5 PCI-X. I also have a G4 QuickSilver 867 with an upgraded processor (Sonnet 1.8 Ghz). According to the specs, they both have Gigabit Ethernet built in. My question is this....
To maximize the transfer of files, etc. between the two, I assume I need a Gigabit Ethernet hub. I have a hub now, but I know it is not GB Ethernet. I also have a G4 QS 867 with OS X Server 10.39 on it. I would like to use the server to store my video, audio and graphic files for retrieval. Is this a workable set-up. I talked with Larry Jordan who trains on Final Cut Pro and he says my down side will be the speed of the network via Ethernet. I know the optimal transfer of data for video editing is via Firewire (preferably FW 800). The G5 will be used exclusively with Final Cut Studio 2. I plan on adding two 1.5 TB drives and have an external FW 800 enclosure with two 500 GB drives for storage.
The question is this--do I need any additional cards in any of the machines for Gigabit performance between machines or is the built-in Ethernet with a GB Ethernet hub sufficient for my intended use?

Thanks NL Edit. I knew the downsides going into the purchase. However, What I am using now is a QuickSilver 2001 G4 with a Sonnet 1.8 Ghz upgrade card and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition card. I produced a 30 minute documentary for a local church's 50th Anniversary using that and FCS 2. I actually can work 3D in Motion as well. My issues are two things: Time and Money...TIME, because the G4 takes a bit to render and MONEY because for what I picked-up the G5 for was a pittance for the nominal bump in performance. I have already installed FCS in the G5 and notice a significant increase and time savings.

24"iMAC optimal screen resolution for photo processing

I have a 24" iMAC (matte) and do mostly photo editing. What is the optimal screen resolution for photo processing work?

All Screens are 72 dpi (dots per inch- in reference to pixels) no matter what screen resolution you use. The only difference the screen resolution will make is the size of the photo when you are viewing. Higher resolution means the picture will take up less space in you work area, but you will most likely have to zoom in to edit finer areas. Lower resolution will cause the picture you are editing to take up more of your work space and to see multiple photos side by side you will have to zoom out of fron the photos. So, really the choice is up to you.
When creating the original document, this is where you need to monitor the dpi. The higher the dpi, the clearer your photo will look in print. A high dpi also means more disk space is being taken up by the photo. Generally a good dpi for print is 300 dpi. Anything that is only purposed for a screen based project (i.e. internet logos) should be saved at 72 dpi. Why use disk space and cause your pages to take longer load if no one will be able to tell the difference on screen between 72 and 300 dpi?

AMD FX3850 For budget editing build?

First off I would like to thank the dedicated users who have shared there knowlage over the years. Its taken quite awhile but ive sifted through alot of it over the last couple weeks with the intent on chosing parts for a new build. I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on the knew piledriver achitecture in the FX 8350 and 8320 and if it has a place at the center of a budget workstation.
A little bit more about my needs.
At the moment I'm a student and under a vary tight budget. Photo and video editing has long been a hoby and only recently turned more serious/semi-professional (aka Friends pay for odd jobs). Im happy to say that this is ramping up. I personal plans to take things farther and more work then my current tools can handle (aka asus gaming laptop). This comming year I will be doing a series of web videos in conjuntion with a website I will be managing. A more personal project will be starting a documentry on the local action sports scene. So broken down more briefly.
- I will by no means be editing 24/7. Though quick response and smothe performance will be required.
- I will be shooting mostly with Panasonic GH2/3 The Hacked footage is high bitrate AVCHD
This isn't my first PC build. Though the first workstation. I will overclock.
It seems everyone is a proponent of Intell. I can see why they firmly sit on top of the performance heap. The money you pay to get to the top of said pile grows exponetionly the closer you get there. The reason i'm even considering AMD is they fall into my price range with a chip that seems well tailored to pp. well its benchmarked at exporting certain formats well. anyway. So why not go with what is tried and ture? say a i7 2600, it could be good for a budget build. Well that chip is almost 100 bucks more then the amd's current price. If you upgrade one part of your system you either forgo balance and end up wasting your investment, or you upgrade more and the price grows. That said I havn't tested it, I dont know if my FX build would be balanced.
As much as I want a cheap system I dont want somthing that wont hanndle the work load, especialy as its unlikely to change for at least a few years.
so with that in regard I have not left the i7 3770k and 3820 out either. With Haswell comming it would be nice to be able to upgrade, though realisticly that would be several years out bacause the build should need it untill then.
The amd build orrigaly hit about 1k when i priced it out. I thought the i7 would run close to 2k so i discounted it as an option. then I saw this.

i7 3770 for $1200. for sure! However further inspection shows some of thoes components are well, cheap. exactly what there supposed to be . So do I go with a AMD build for 1k. Or maybe upgrade to multiple HDD 32gb ram, SSD with the AMD chip and a 660ti for 12-1300. Or would it be better to do the budget i7 system for about the same price. Or, what I maybe leaning to more now, a i7 with a good board, 16gb ram(should be enough), and bare minimum HDD as AVCHD dosn't seem to as r/w dependent as it is CPU processing power.
So for thoes that want the shrot version and avoid my long winded speach. here are my questions.
AMD FX 3850: is it enough to edit AVCHD single cam smothly? If an intel chip is prefered even in the same class, say an i5 or i7 2600 why?
is AVCHD format video CPU depended enough to need, say a i7 3770 and will it bottleneck on the drives without a fast or multi drive setup? am I better off with the AMD chip and multiple harddrives?

Thanks for your reply and PPBM. The way I understand it "pile driver" supports thoes instructions. Is it that it may not perform said instructoins as efficently givving ground to the intel chips?
With your i7 2600 machine do you have a multi hard drive setup or raid arary. Certainly a fully optomized systeem, especialy one with a i7, would have raid. but because of the compressed nature of AVCHD would single drives suffice?
Hacked Gh2 footage is often low GOP at bitrates over 150 mb/s Though I may have answered my own question here. Would a bitrate higher then a drives R/W rate be a problem requireing raid for smoothe editing?

Again thanks for PPBM. I enjoyed your build log and helpful forum posts. Putting things in lamens terms really sped up the learning curve. I have spent some time on PPBM. What gives me pause about the FX results is there are only 2. It's certainly not enough data. With other chips, like the 3770k or 2600, you can see results from 1000+ to top 100. This surly shows setup and configuration are more important then just the chip. Could this be true with the AMD chips?
Would a less then optimal set up hold their score back to 500, just as with some of the i7's?
The builds seem all over the place. even the i7's over 500: some have 8gigs of ram, some have 16, some have raid, and some dont. i dont know quite what to make of it.
My thinking is that I would be better off with an Optimized AMD setup then a not optimized i7 priced similarly, with bottlenecks left and right. However if AVCHD stresses drives less and the CPU more, I certainly see merrit to a i7 without a raid setup for better performance, then amd at a similar cost. With better upgrade options as well and the peace of mind knowing that if its done right a solid score is achiveable. with amd its unkown it seems. Thats a big one.
With PPBM not spicificly testing AVCHD performance. What are key areas for good performance with that codec?
If I can wait I certainly will and will likely build a system based on parts you have outlined in other posts, in the intermediate or warrior catagory. Or see what Haswell has to offer next year: at least price drops for existing chips.

1TB Hard Drve vs 500GB Hard Drive for Video Editing?

I've heard rumors to stay away from the 1TB internal hard drive? Something about how it makes video editing slightly slower because its a bigger drive? This has always confused me because I was under the assumption that Both 1TB SATA drives and the 500GB SATA drives run at 7200 rpm and both with 3GB/s data transfers.
Are these rumors backed up with anything else?
I'm interested in the optimal set up for a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio and working with High Def footage.

I don't think it is worth swatting flies or every rumor. A drive performs slower as it reaches capacity, and there is full track seek if a file is scattered over the full track or platter. By "slightly" that means it isn't an issue or matter, or not critical.

DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?

Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?

System configuration question for HD editing on new system.

I've been editing in premiere for close to 9 years but have stuck mostly to DV video. I recently bought Production Premium and wanted to jump into editing HD. Here is the system I installed the Production Premium CS4 on; (I will use Premiere, AE, and PhotoShop the most)

I have two IDE 120gig WD drives I was thinking of putting in a raid 0 for the scratch. Would this be advisable? Would the IDE configuration be quick enough for this purpose? How much space should I dedicate to scratch (do I really need the full 240gigs)?
I will buy two more 1TB Seagate Drives for more video storage. would running all 4 of the seagate 1TB drives in raid 0 be beneficial for HD editing? or should I just create a separate raid configuration for those two additional drives?
(I will backup to a network drive(s) so I want the system itself to be built for speed [without getting obscenely expensive])
What is your opinion on addition hardware such as the matrox cards for help with HD editing? (I used the RT2000 with the DV editing and it was an "adventure" to say the least to get that one working right.)

As long as you can stuff 2 IDE drives in your case, go ahead and use those in a raid0 for a fixed pagefile of 8 - 12 GB and set your scratch to this raid. If you want to use this array for temporary storage of downloads, etc. no problem.
The two additional disks would be used best if you create either a 4 disk raid5 to have at least some redundancy or as spearate disks. One for projects, the other one for exports and your current raid0 for media. I would not advise a 4 disk raid0 because of the chance of disk failure.
I would not use anything Matrox, better to invest that in a good raid controller, so you will profit from the performance gain with all applications, or by increasing memory.

There is some kind of error. The new version of iTunes is 11.1, which although is not available via updates, it can be downloaded from the Apple website here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
After updating iTunes to the newest version you should be able to update your iOS

How to set up multiple hard drives for video editing?

I have recently purchase a new custom built PC for video editing with Premiere.
I have 3 seperate HDD's as I read on one of the forums that I should set up the hard drives as follows:
one for OS/programs
one for media
one for pagefile/scratch/rendors (these are new terms for me and I am not exactly sure what they mean)
If anybody can help walk me through the steps to set up/program my HDDs properly for editing video for adobe CS5, it would be greatly appreciated.
I do not know where to begin to set this up as recommended.

This video helped a lot. I have configured through my adobe software accordingly. Another user also suggested that I configure redirecting of my swap files through windows. I was unable to figure out how to do that.
