Help - Resizing images WITHOUT awt or graphics2D

Hi all.
I have a JSP application running on a shared Tomcat hosting.
My users can send images to the site.
I cannot find a way to resize an image without using AWT or graphics.
(I also cannot switch to headless mode, the JVM is not mine to control)
I tried using ImageIO but crashed because there is no X11 graphics on the server.
I tried using the PJA toolkit, but I could not find a way to RESIZE an image using PJA.
Help ! This is driving me mad.
Thanks !
Shachar Weis.

Jeff,
The printing service should only need to know the size at which you want it printed. At that point they can adjust the PPI to a number that will shrink the print size, but not destroy any pixels.
You can adjust the DPI as you Export if you wish, but that should not be necessary. To change the DPI, choose JPEG Original, say, and click on Edit and you can change the DPI to a higher number, and export.
If you export any photo, open it in Preview, click on Tools and choose Adjust size then you can see the impact of changing the Resolution on inches/or metric measure, which is what the printer can do. In Adjust Size be sure to Deselect the option to Resample -- the latter would otherwise remove pixels and result in a lower resolution.

  • Resizing images without export

    Hi all,
    I would like to create a folder that contains re-sized versions of my master images. The folder will be photos that I am posting to my web site and I want to be able to control their size and keep this resized image in my aperture library. I am uploading them through the site host's uploader (squarespace) using finder, not exporting through aperture. Is there a way to create duplicate,resized versions of the images without exporting and re-importing the photos?
    I know that aperture isn't photo editing software, but i expected that it would be able to do basic things (mirror, resize, etc) and am constantly disappointed. I could round-trip to photoshop, but I hope there's an easier solution.
    Thanks,
    John

    First question - why do you need the JPEGs? If it's to upload them to a site via FTP there are export plug-ins to do this directly from within Aperture.
    Using the media browser isn't going to help you at all because that will be accessing Previews in Adobe98 profile - not something you should be putting up on a website.
    I also came across this problem when I wanted to convert a large number of raw files to jpegs and keep the new jpegs in my library. At the time I was running low on disk space and didn't need the raws anymore, but had to go through the process of exporting and re-importing for a bunch of projects.
    Sorry, but that's a bit too alien an idea for me - I never threw away negatives back when I was using film, why would you throw away RAW files now?
    Another pet peeve I have is that there is no status indicator when exporting (2 minutes left, 25% done, etc....anything besides a beachball), so I don't know how long the export will take, and on my 2006 macbook it sometimes takes a while.
    At the bottom of the Browser pane on the left you will see a progress 'swirl' when exporting, importing or generating Previews. Click on it to bring up the activity window with progress bars for all current actions. You can also access it through Window>Show Activity.

  • Creating Thumbnails of Images without AWT

    I've searched in a lot of places, and am becoming increasingly surprised I cannot find a straightforward answer to a problem I have. I run Tomcat on a server which has no X11, and I do not want to install it. However, I am also trying to create a servlet which will take an image from a byte array and create a thumbnail of it.
    While I have seen many examples of this, all use AWT, which seems to require using X11 or some windowing system even to run at all (despite my not trying to create a window or anything). While I understand that there is an option that can be added to the initialization script for Tomcat ("JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.awt.headless=true") I would far prefer simple code that didn't use AWT at all.
    Does anyone know how to create a thumbnail or resize an image without the use of the AWT library whatsoever? Thanks very much!

    Hmm... sorry I didn't know that.
    I remember seeing some section on this website about Java Imaging or something like that and it seemed totally independent of AWT.
    I came accross another imaging article:
    http://johnbokma.com/java/obtaining-image-metadata.html , this one doesn't seem to use AWT - at least I don't see any in the imports.
    May be Images are supposed to work only with AWT.
    Here's another set of examples:
    http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/javax.imageio/pkg.html
    that demonstrates the javax.imageio package, but those examples also use AWT.
    I think one could re-size an image on a website to create thumbnails, by specifying a percent width and height. and may be there's no need to have a package to create thumbnails on a web page when it could be done with HTML and that's probably why there isn't image processing for web pages (this is just my guess work, I could be wrong)

  • Resizing an image without AWT

    Hello, here is my question:
    I have seen many examples on the Web explaining how to resize an image in Java. All of them use AWT. The problem is, my application is web-based, hosted on a server without X11 installed. Now, I know from the Java2D FAQ that from Java 1.4, you should be able to bypass this problem by setting this system property: "-Djava.awt.headless=true". But unfortunately, I don't have access to the system properties either. My website is hosted by a company sharing it's servers between many customers, and therefore, I cannot customize the Caucho Resin server to fit my needs.
    So I'm wondering if there's any other way to resize an image in a web application with Java.
    Thank you in advance!

    Unfortunately, it does not seem to work... I'm still getting an "Exception Class:      class java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError" error as soon as I try to use the "getGraphics" method on the webhost's server. It works on my local machine, thought. Here's the trace I'm getting:

  • Resizing images without pixelation

    Hi everyone
    This is a topic that everyone seems to be wondering about but
    nobody has the answer. If you look at a site like
    www.manipulator.com , the screen can be resized and the images will
    increase along with it (until a certain point of course) but at no
    point do the images pixelate? Where as my images do not matter how
    good the quality or picture format.
    If anybody has any ideas how this is done I would be
    greatful!
    Thanks

  • Help resizing images using aperture

    I don't use photoshop and am trying to figure out the best way to size an image of photos to put into a locket. I am not sure if the resizing (not crop) can be done in Aperture or do I need to use a tool like photoshop (or GIMP since I don't own photoshop.) OR instead would this be done in the export settings when I send it to the online printing company?

  • Help: Resizing images for Printing with CS3

    Hello All,
      Thus far, I've done most of my printing with my Epson 3800 on paper below 8.5 x 11 which was no problem.  Now I'd like to do some larger stuff like 13 x 19 and 17 x 25.  Image size is 3504 x 2336 psd. @ 360ppi. (workflow is RAW to Adobe RGB 16-bit 8.2MP)  I'd like to maintain the 360ppi resolution, but resize to say 12 x 18 or larger and then apply final sharpening.
      My confusion is with the up-sizing steps themselves.  I've heard it's best to increase image x% over target image size via Bicubic(?) and then to reduce x% to target size using Bicubic sharpener(?) or something to that effect.  Can someone please walk me through the process so I can get the hang of it?  Thank you!
    Mike

    Sounds like one of those tales from an older technology.
    Just use the resampling method as recommended in the Image size dialog

  • Resizing image without cropping

    I am trying to add a value to the width in InDesign in order to resize an image. What's happening is that it is resizing the image by cropping it. I don't want the image cropped; I just want it reduced proportionately. What should I do?

    Answered in your other thread.

  • Mail is resizing images without my permission!!!

    I've been trying to send a TIFF file to a printer for a business card. They said my image was all fuzzy, so I checked my Sent folder, and sure enough, it was fuzzy. I assumed it happened again. So I created a new TIFF for them, attached it to an email, then opened the attachment - looked great full screen, very sharp. The printer made a proof for me - fuzzy proof, crap image. So I checked my Sent mail, and sure enough what was sent was not what I attached and viewed before Sending.
    Mail is dumbing down my attachments. How do I stop this?

    At the bottom of the new message window is the Image Size set to Original?
    If all else fails, you could put the tiff into a .zip and send it that way.

  • What software do you reccomend for resizing images for web ?

    I am looking for some software to help resize images on my mac to post online eg 470x 707 at 72 dpi (something similar to Faststone for PC would be good ) >Any recomendations?

    72 dpi doesn't mean anything in terms of video and 470 x 707 is a rather peculiar size, what is the source of the video and what exactly are you trying to achieve.

  • How to proper resize images and videos at runtime without losing quality?

    Hi guys. I need a bit of help here.
    I've built a flash site in which i want to resize a movie to the stage. I do it by keeping the proportion, thus i only resize the width and then i resize the height acordingly to the new width but keeping the proportion.
    The problem is that my film still looks "pixeled".
    I found a website on which the stage resizes dinamically with the movie and the background images without either of them losing quality. Till now i knew that resizing images or videos in flash at authoring or runtime produces pixeled results.
    This is the website: http://kampanjeweb.apt.no/jotun/romforrom/. Can someone tell me how do they do it without losing quality? just make the browser windowed and resize the margins to see the effect.
    Thanks.

    Hello, Venian.
    About the video, you could try setting the flash.media.Video's smoothing property to TRUE. This should keep a quality, but you can do nothing if the video has a poor quality. You need a great video.
    About the images, you you need to redraw the image each time you resize it. To achieve it, use a combination of Bitmap, BitmapData and Matrix classes. Any doubt, just call again. Here is a simple example:
    var scale:Number = .5;
    var highQualitySourceImage:Bitmap = ...your image...;
    var scaleMatrix:Matrix = new Matrix();
         scaleMatrix.scale(scale, scale);
    var bitmapData:BitmapData = new BitmapData( scale*highQualitySourceImage.width, scale*highQualitySourceImage.height);
         bitmapData.draw(highQualitySourceImage, scaleMatrix);
    var finalBitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(bitmapData);
    addChild( finalBitmap );
    Cheers,
    CaioToOn!

  • Placing images without resize?

    When I put some images into a psd via placement instead of copy/paste, the images are resized, often by a lot. It appears that different resolutions is the reason.
    Image sizes are retained in copy/paste, but placement is faster, so I'm wondering if it's possible to retain image sizes via placement without tweaking the resolutions.
    Disabling "Resize Image During Place" doesn't help. Neither does changing the W and H values to 100% during placement, as it appears that the images were already resized so that 100% of the placed images are still way off of the original image sizes.
    Thanks!

    As Wade said, I don't think this is any bug. sounds mor like you are using some sort of hyper-sensitive input device (or misconfigured one) that causes accidental selection and move of existing work.

  • Need help on quality of resized image!!

    I am required to resize images to max 1240pixel (longest dimension) as a submission of work, though when work is viewed it will be at 30"x40".  Can not figure out a way to do this where images don't become quite pixelated when viewed at larger size.   Appreciate any suggestions.

    Is there some software to verify if my graphics card is shotty?
    Techtool Pro has some testing, the AHT tests VRAM, but game benchmarks and stressing will tell you the most.
    Is re-seating the graphics card or memory worth trying?
    Absolutely. Just don't reinstall the graphics card until you clean it thoroughly.
    Cleaning the dust out of my machine?
    YES. A dust filled graphics card heatsink will cause the GPU to cook, and cause problems thet you describe.
    If I need a new graphics card, what are my options? Do I have to purchase it via Apple store? I would like to stick with an Nvidia card so am I stuck buying the same card I currently have or can I upgrade?
    You don't have to buy from Apple, but using with OS X limits your choices to Mac compatible or flashable PC versions.
    There is an awful lot of user input into this topic here:

    I need some help resizing my images on PS6. I am using a mac and have been trying to resize with same resolution and constaining proportions but for some reaseon the smaller resized image appears pizelated. Heres an image of before and after. The first image I use is a JPG 72dpi 1500px x1500px and I want to downsize it to 600x600px same res, but it keeps pixelating, this has never happened before. Any suggestions, thoughts?
    thanks!

    I wouldn't say pixelated; more like blurry.
    Like ConnectedCreative said, what steps are you using? Are you using "bicubic sharper" when resizing down?

  • PSE newbie frustrated, please help with image resizing

    Hi!
    Tutorials aren't helping me, nor is trial and error. I just want to resize some photos I downloaded to my computer, then upload them to a website to use as my avatar or signature. There are specific pixel dimensions I must adhere to. I want to keep the photo in it's entirety, but when I resize it, it distorts a bit, looks fuzzy...
    I can't figure out what the heck I am doing wrong. Some pictures turn out just fine and others look really bad. I know it can be done because I've seen the same pictures I'm trying to size, being used for the same thing I want to use them for, but theirs are clear, absolutely no distortion whatsoever. The pixel dimensions I have to work with are either 100x100, or 450 pixels wide by 90 pixels high.
    I hope this made sense, I'm not sure how else to word it. Please forgive my ignorance, I've really been trying.
    Thank-you
    B

    For an avatar it’s possibly best to crop to begin with so you get a true square.
    Open the image and select the crop tool and change the aspect ratio to 1 x 1 or 5 x 5 then drag out a square and move the image around inside it or drag the bounding box borders until you have it looking as you want. Then click the green check mark.
    On the top menu click Image > Resize > Image Size and in either the height or width box type 100 px (you only need to type the dimension once the other box will change to 100 automatically. Make sure you have the bottom three boxes checked:
    Scale Styles
    Constrain Proportions
    Resample Image
    With all three checked set the bottom dropdown to Bicubic and then hit OK.
    If you want to apply some sharpening select Enhance on the top menu and choose Unsharp Mask.
    Make sure the Radius is no more than 1.5 and use the amount slider to get the image looking as you want it then save.
