Help! Returned ipod won't be recognized

I updated itunes, updated the ipod.
my ipod crashed before. i sent it back to be repaired and got a new one. so this one won't be recognized.

I have the same problem.. returned ipod is MAc enabled and BUT it wont restore!!
My new ipod is not being recognised on my pc.
I have:
Reintstalled the latest Ipod Sw 2005-26-6 (and the original version 2004 8-6)when the latest load didnt work. reinstalled iTunes and tried to restore my ipod.. when i do, i have a pop up that says that the ipod is locked!!. I have gone on the apple support website and it tells me to format my ipod for windows i need "iPod for Windows Software 1.0" but the website also states that this Sw cannot be found on the Apple website! The original packaging (for my last ipod) only had the one disc with itunes and ipod sw updater (no specfic Windows sw)... Before anyone says what i expect them to say..even if this sw is on the original CD.. it wont connect to my laptop as its formatted for a mac!! Im going on holiday in two days....

Your Touch is working correctly. Currently, without unsupported third party hacks, the Touch has NO disc mode. It will only show up in iTunes.
how do i put programes and games in my ipod touch
Right now, you don't. The SDK is scheduled to be released in Feburary. Then developers will be able to write programs that will be loadable.

You said you updated yur 1G iPod to 4.2.1. A 1G can only go to 3.1.3 and thus you must have jailbroken it to get to 4.2.1 and that can cause problems.

Apple tech charges $29.99 for out of warranty products and if I am reluctant to pay with them telling me its simply a hardware problem.

  • Help my IPOD won't start PLEASE HELP

It gives me the apple screen and then switches into the foloer with an exclamation point and i don't know how to get it out. I have tried restarting, and plugging it into the computer doesn't do anything. It is charged, please help.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Help! iPod won't work or connect to XP

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. All the music was erased off my 5G 30GB iPod Video last week for some reason (interestingly, the photos were still there). When connected to iTunes, it gave me an error message about needing to "reinstall the iPod software."
Today, I got a new hard drive and installed XP Pro on it. I connected the iPod via USB and the little taskbar bubble popped up saying "Found new hardware -- iPod." Next, I installed the iPod + iTunes software from the CD, restarted the PC and run iTunes. My PC and iTunes didn't indicate that the iPod was connected, so I plugged the USB cable into another slot -- nothing. (I know it isn't the USB because I plugged in a thumb drive and it works fine). I've also tried to update/restore the iPod... but alas, I can't because it's not recognized.
What happened to the iPod is even stranger. After the hard drive was wiped, I was able to turn it on and off and view photos. Now, it only displays the white Apple logo with the black background. The backlight keeps switching on and off randomly, the iPod won't turn off, and the hard drive is making the same noise it does when you change a song, only every few seconds (I assume it's doing this because it keeps turning the backlight on and off constantly).
I've only been able to use the iPod one week out of the two weeks I've had it -- and I'm really disappointed about it. Will I have to send it back to Apple? (hopefully under the 30 or 90 day warranty, whichever I qualify for)
    Help is appreciated.

5G Video 30GB   Windows XP Pro

In order to restore it, it has to show up on the desktop, I think. It doesn't. I downloaded the software, and it's waiting for me to plug in the iPod (which is plugged in).
I actually have been reseting it every minute or so since I read your post. Before I restore it, the battery icon doesn't show any lightning bolt or motion. Then if I restore it, it appears to be charging for a short time. I was wondering if I was going to have to charge it in lots of short increments (I don't have the optional charger).
I dug out the manual from under the desk. And it says that if it is extremely low on power, I may need to leave it charging for 30 minutes before it is recognized. I think from a sentence in there: "Leave iPod mini connected until at least the battery icon animates." So, maybe it is actually charging when it appears to be unconnected and has no lightening bolt.
I've turned it off and left it plugged in and am waiting for a charging battery icon to appear. If that doesn't work, I will try leaving it on and plugged in (so far it just turns off when I do that). Again, any suggestions are welcome.

  • Help! iPod won't connect to computer

So, I got a new iPod Touch 5g about a month and a half ago and it was connecting to my computer just fine up until about 2 weeks ago when I updated my iTunes. I have an HP laptop that runs on Windows 8.1. I have gone through all of the steps that everyone keeps telling me. I've uninstalled iTunes, reset my iPod, checked my cable, which I know is not the problem because it works everytime I plug it into the wall, I have checked multiple times for a new update, and I've run diagnostics multiple times and everytime the same thing happens and I get the same steps which I've run through multiple times. When I connect my iPod it will charge but it won't recognize it in iTunes. I'm sorry if I sound rude, I've gotten extremely fed up with this because it happened to my last iPod aswell. Please help me.

  • Help! ipod won't charge or anything

so, i'm not sure as to whether or this goes here, but...
i guess my computer is not detecting my ipod
i'll plug it in, and it will say it's charging
but when i unplug, it still has the same battery life
i can't put anything new on the ipod, and itunes doesn't pop up or read it's there when i plug it in
    help would be appreciated, thanks

You'll probably need to format your iPod to this computer (i.e., restoring your iPod will do this).
Your iPod won't be able to be restored, though, if it's not recognized in iTunes.
To get it recognized, first try putting your iPod in disk mode, then connecting it to your computer. For more info on this, read here : Putting your iPod into Disk Mode
If that doesn't work to get your iPod recognized by iTunes (to restore it), give the Five R's a try. For more info on the Five R's, read here, and here.
If this doesn't work either to get your iPod recognized properly in iTunes (i.e., you should see it in the left panel of iTunes), I would suggest trying assigning your iPod a different drive letter. Follow these instructions below:
Log off of any other users on your computer.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:
Windows confuses iPod drive letter / Changing drive letter
After this, (whichever technique worked: disk mode, five R's, or the different drive letter), restore your iPod.
This should format it to your computer. Although this will delete all the content off of it, this may be your long-term solution (so you won't need to connect your iPod in Disk Mode every time you want to sync songs to your iPod).
I hope that helps you. If you need any additional explanatoin of those things, post back wit the details of your issue, and I'd be glad to try to help you again with this.

  • Help! Ipod won't shuffle songs, the song cover flow disappeared!!

Anyone, please help me. I am new to Ipod. I have 8 GB Ipod Nano, bought two weeks ago. I recently purchased more songs and currently have 50 songs on my play list on my computer. So last night after I bought the songs and transfered and sync all those songs, my Ipod worked fine (I could listen to all the songs, shuffle the songs, see all the cover flow, etc). This morning, after I fed my kids, I grabbed my Ipod and started listening to my songs and it worked fine - nothings wrong, until in the middle of playing one song, all of the sudden the song stopped playing. I thought the battery had died, but when I checked, the battery was still half full. So I went back to the menu button and tried to shuffle my songs but it didn't do anything/didn't play the song. My Ipod just showed that I have 50 songs on my shuffle songs. Then I checked the song cover flow, and it showed NO pictures of the song album (before this happened, when I check the cover flow my Ipod show the pictures of music/CD albums of a singer, but now it just blank!!). I already restart the computer, unplug the USB cable, restart my Ipod, re-sync my Ipod and still it doesn't work. I can't shuffle the songs, Ipod won't play the songs (though it shows that I have 50 songs on playlist), the song cover flow disappeared! I don't know what to do. Please help!! Thank you.

Ok so do the songs play and show up ok in iTunes? Were you playing the iPod through a set of speakers and not connected to the computer?
Have you tried performing a reset on the iPod yet? Or a restore on the iPod yet?

  • Help:my ipod won't turn on

I was playing around with my 4th gen iPod the other day when I hit a series of buttons that caused it to freeze.
(I think it was the skip song button while it was in the mode that let's you skip to a part of a song and paused)
I tried doing the reset sequence by holding down the select and menu button. I then tried the play and menu button. No matter what I did, the screen stayed frozen.
After about 5 minutes, I gave up. Since the backlight was on, I figured I'd just let it drain its batteries and reset itself.
Well... I came back to it yesterday and now the iPod won't work. When I plug it into the charger, I see the apple logo appear for about 1 second and hear the HD starting to spin, but then it shuts itself back off. This happens when I try pushing the menu button unplugged, pushing the menu button pluged, or simply plugging it into the power supply.
I tried leaving the iPod charging for about 4 hours. When I came back, it behaved the same way.
What can I do now? Did the iPod really destroy itself because I hit the skip-song button at the wrong time?

i have a 60G ipod video and it is doing the same thing. I had just connected it to my PC and transferred all my music and videos, and then the computer made the sound when something is disconnected from the USB drive. And i looked at the ipod and it comes up with the Apple boot screen, then makes a few clicking sounds then shuts off, then does the same thing again. It's been constantly doing this for the last 20 minutes....
I can reset it using the centre and menu buttons, and the screen goes blank, but then it just starts doing the same thing a few seconds later...
i only just got this ipod this morning and already it is stuffing up.... any help?

I'm having the same exact issue! Have you been able to figure something out yet? I've tried everything and I just can't get it to connect to my Mac. It works with my PC just fine though. I heard that it would be beneficial to reformat the iPod but I'm not sure how.

If your computer or the updater isn't picking up the iPod try putting it into Disk mode first: Putting your iPod into Disk Mode

  • Help! iPod won't work - started with iPod updater

    Hi,
I tried updating my iPod nano today as suggested. It installed and everything fine. But when I tried updating it, it gave me an error and I couldn't use my iPod. So I tried restoring it with the updater.
Nothing worked. The "Do not disconnect" sign is up all this while. So I try restarting my computer. The DNDisconnect sign is still on but now.. nothing works. I can't do anything with it and iTunes does not even recognize it. I don't even have the iPod sign on My Computer. So I disconnect it, against my better judgement. And it gives me the exclamation sign and tells me to go to the Apple Support site.
I do.. and I follow the 5 Rs. I start by resetting it. This brings me into the Disk Mode which is where I'm stuck at now. It won't exit even when I try restarting it. I've reinstalled the updater AND iTunes and nothing seems to work still. Everytime I connect it to try to restore it with the updater, it says Service error.
    Help.......?

If you get a message with iPod Service Error please see if either of these two links are helpful:
