Help-think i have a kernel panic
I need help, every couple of months my computer goes nuts and crashes either when i start up or when using the internet or entourage mail. Usual starts with colored little dots on the screen and then the screen goes grey and the restart message shows, sometimes a red bar appears on the top of the screen. I think its a kernel panic?
Anyway, I have had it checked out, and the repair person swears my computer is fine, and must be a plug connected causing this issue. I have unplugged and plugged in many scenarios and seems to happen in all of them. I have even replaced my ethernet cord. Does not matter. I dont know if this a random fluke, but my computer keeps asking me to update airport for the past couple months and i dont have an airport-could be random. Can anyone help me??
here is my log:

my white macbook keeps showing a screen when i start it up that says "you need to restart your computer..." but i do repeatedly and its the same, when i start up and hold the option key an image that says "hard disk" shows up and if click on it it goes back to the same screen as before. does this mean i need a whole new hard drive?
It may mean the drive is bad, but it could also simply mean the drive is corrupted and needs to be reformatted and OS X reinstalled. First try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this proves unsuccessful but the drive tests OK, then do the following, otherwise you will need to erase the drive and reinstall OS X.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. 2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Will the USB debug kit help me with the USB kernel panic?
Hi.
Some time ago I posted a question regarding USB trouble and got the answer that I have a 'kernel panic' (Thanks for that!). I did not do anything about it, I just did not use Memory Sticks etc. Now I want to try and solve the problem, because I hate it when things does not work.
I searched for 'kernel panic' to learn more, but I must admit that I did not understand much of it
Apple has something called 'mac OSX USB debug kit'. Can that solve the problem? Is it safe to run?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Regards, Littaol
iMac G4 Flat screen Mac OS X (10.3.9)Hello again Littaol,
After a brief read of this page, I would not start messing with developer tools, scripts, programs and "kits", before having explored every other "human" solutions.
Firstly, I would simply try again to use my Memory Sticks.
Perhaps this model was not yet handled properly, but now causes no problem after you updated Mac OS X or after you installed a Security Update.
Secondly, do you have other problems with your USB ports?
Keyboard, mouse, printer, etc, all is going well?
Kernel Panics:
Yes, they are caused by a problem, not always but often a hardware problem.
Sometimes though, they come for "no reason" and never show up again.
However, they have almost completely disappeared now from our Mac OS X users' lives, or?
If they occur only one or two times a year, there's nothing to worry about.
Let us know.
Hopefully this first answer will wake some good ideas from one of the many helpful and knowledgeable members of these Discussions!

Hi! I have a kernel panic problem on my macbook pro! Please help me!!!
Hi! At the Apple store they changed my harddisk twice, but they didn't solve my problem.. Every time I try to install applications or to update the software, the kernel panic message appears (you need to restart your computer..etc) and I don't know what to do! I have already sent the signal to apple and verified permissions and when I did the hardware test, it appeared that i have a 4MEM/1/40000000:0xa9facf98 error...
this is the problem when I restart my computer:

Help!!! Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and I have a kernel panic!
Upgraded my MacBook Pro 15" from Lion to Mountain Lion and I get the following kernel panic at each restart:
panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff8000540a4f): Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 2"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.26.8/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546
[IOBluetoothHCIController::setConfigState] calling registerService
Then the backtrace fllowed by:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: init
Boot args: config="\OS X Ibstall Data\cpm.apple.Boot"
Mac OS version:
Not yet yet set
Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 11.4.0: Mon Apr 9 ...
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
YoussefOk, ressetting the PRAM did the trick for me. I should have read a similar thread about a kernel panic after installing Mountain Lion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/19020046#19020046) :-(
It's now installing the OS. Crossing my fingers!

Help! New MacBook getting Kernel Panics!
Hi,
After many years using PC's I finally decided to take the venture into a Mac. I love(d) it.
But, just three-weeks in, my laptop has crashed via a Kernel Panic (or, "The Grey Screen Of Death") THREE TIMES now. I'm getting really, really concerned - and unimpressed.
I don't treat my computers badly, I'm overly safe when it comes to unsafe websites, downloads and programs, etc, so I don't understand why this is happening - and if it is a hard drive issue then I'll be even more worried because this computer is brand new... and wasn't cheap either.
I run:
Mac OS X, version 10.6.6
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I do, however, get the sense that the issue might have something to do with Safari. My Safari often shuts down and closes because of an "unexpected error" more than a few times every couple of days - and, so far, whenever the computer has completely crashed with the Kernel error it's while I'm using Safari (the first time it happened I was closing a tab, the second time it was when I went to switch tabs, and the third time it happened was while a website loaded). Do you think Safari has anything to do with it?
If you need the logs, here they are (but forgive me for the length that's about to follow). I will be eternally grateful to anyone who might be able to give me some form of answer. I'm really anxious about it, and I'm worried I'm going to have to go through the hassle of sending the computer back to get fixed/replaced or something. For one, I can't afford to do it right now and, importantly, I edit and film videos, and I have a wedding to film in the next couple of weeks therefore I will NEED to be able to use my computer free of any troubles.
Many, many thanks in advance for ANY kind of help.

nullI am having a similar problem with kernal panics on a new MBP--I crash about 2 weeks -- usually in safari on pages that use flash. And I did add RAM myself --about two months ago.
If the RAM is not set properly could this be the cause of my kpe's? Or would the crashes mean the RAM is bad? The error log mentions (AppleIntelHDGraphics): could it be the graphics card?
Thanks for any help!

Help! G3 freaking out/kernel panic/memory problems
Hi All,
I put some pc 133 512 mb memory in my G3 [which is actually pc 100, but supposedly should work fine] and then it kernel paniced.
Now it mostly seems to recognize memory in the slot closest to the screen. But only 64 and 32 mb sticks.
Plus, it only boots to OS9 which is on a seperate partition to OSX which is where it is supposed to go, even after setting OSX as the startup.
It also always wants the time adjusted- perhaps the battery is flat- I put it all aside for a month after it happened.
Could the 512 MB pc 133 have fried something? It seems very fragile.
Safe start just keeps rebooting, and X on startup is ignored and os 9 starts.
HELP!!!
Any ideas gratefully received,
WumpsdadHey annexit,
Yes I get a lot of donated computers so I have probably 80 or so sticks of RAM around here mostly PC 100 and 133 out of both PCs and Macs. I'm constantly sorting through them and marking them: "Works w/ iMac G3, Kernal panic in iMac G4, Works in tower G4 Sawtooth, not recognized...etc."
..old G3 iMac 500 Mhz with one 128 and one 256 PC133 (probably scammed from a G4 tower when I upgraded that),
Was planning to replace the 128 with a 512 PC100 - I saw the post from spudnuty
If you look here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/G3450MHz_500MHz_600MHz700MHz
OWC sells a mix of PC 100 and 133 for that machine. They are very good at taking it back if it doesn't work.
Is your G4 Tower still on your net?
running panther, safari crashing and I can't print to the attached printer from the intel laptops wirelessly..
Hmm that should work. I use a MDD G4 Tower as my workhorse and am able to print to it no problem. It's running Leopard now however but I don't remember a problem when it was running Tiger.
Running Panther could be your problem. I was lucky when I bought an iMac G4 for $50 (bad hard drive) in the bottom of the box was a complete set of Tiger CD installers (rare).

Help me with GSOD and kernel panic on 24" imac!
im sorry if this is the wrong place for this.
also sorry if the answers to my questions are somewhere on this board.
However, i have looked all over the internet and everywhere and found no solution.
it seems simple enough.. here goes!
one day, computer freezes, i get a msg saying please restart your computer blah blah in the middle of the screen
looked like this from memory
http://i44.tinypic.com/2n1gvf4.jpg
then it wouldnt turn on at all.
a few days later it turned on, power on, but didnt load up.
just the grey screen with the apple and the spinning wheel.
i dont know what version os i was running but it must be something 10.5 something?
i went out and purchased snowleopard as i dont have any of my original cd's
hoping it cud help me install a new os.
put the cd in but it didnt run, tried pressing c after turn on but wudnt boot from cd drive.
and the cd wont eject either.
please help me! i need my computer back for uni asap!

Go here for help to Resolving Kernel Panics
To eject the disc, try starting up while holding down the mouse. If that doesn't help, startup while holding down the Eject key ⏏
Try starting up while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. Select MacintosHD 10.x.x

HELP! New RAID causes Kernel Panics
Okay, I am pretty sure I did something stupid here, but I desparately need some help for the gurus.
I got the following to setup a RAID:
Rosewell R2 RAID/dual disk enclosure
2 WD Caviar 750 drives
I have:
Tempo SATA Express 34
MBP 2.33 GHz 2GB running Leopard
Here is what happened:
I put it all together and the MBP recognized each drive.
I went into the Dis Utility to use the RAID setup.
Set it to
Volume Format - Mac OS Extended (journaled)
RAID Type - Mirrored RAID Set
I dragged the two drives into the list and clicked "Create"
Then all heck broke loose.
I got a Kernel Panic as the grey curtain dropped.
I have tested the Express card separately with another eSATA and it works fine.
I have tested 1 of the two 750 drives in a different enclosure and I get the Kernal Panic. I still need to check the other drive and load a known good drive into the enclosure to test it, but I don't want to kill a good drive.
So I assume I did something really really stupid.... I usually read much more about these types of things before setting them up but I am traveling and brought this with me to work on as I traveled. Unfortunately, I have had somewhat limited access to the internet and been unable to find any discussions of a similar situation occurring.
PLEASE HELP or at least come up with some good explanations.
ThanksI'm not familiar with RAID setups all that much (the only RAIDs I've ever set up have been my Drobo's, and those were zero-config), so excuse me if any of my questions or suggestions seem dumb.
Have you tried reformatting the drives individually then set the RAID up again (reformat in APM just to be safe)?
Instead of setting up the RAID in a normal session of OSX, how about booting into your install discs and do it from Disk Utility? (although you said you were traveling, so I don't know if you'd have those on hand - maybe a retail copy of Leopard?)
When I have drive problems, I usually follow this pattern:
1) Reformat and try again. If that fails, then
2) Reformat, this time writing the drive over with zeros (an option in Disk Utility, which I'm sure you're aware of). If that fails, then
3) Try doing the setup in a lower level setting (i.e. single user mode, safe mode, from the install discs, etc.), as it might be something in your setting that might be messing it up.
I'd also try the requisite stuff for system troubleshooting as well - run a Disk Repair and Permission Repair on your boot drive, and clean out caches and whatnot (Onyx is a good utility for this - http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html). -
HT1338 I Have a Kernel Panic and I would like to know why
Hi there,
I'm Adauchat, I have a MacBook Pro (baught less then a year ago).
And when I'm using U-torrent, and I leave the computer going to "sleep" (it doesn't really go to sleep, just screen saver then black screen). And when I try to wake it up, I have Kernel Panic.
Without U-torrent ON, I don't remember having any.
Here is the copy of the Kernel, if anybody that have the skill to read the lines can confirm what is it about.. That would be AWSOME!

i just replaced the hard drive on my macbook pro, reformatted new hard drive, installed a back up from time machine and now have kernel panic ( you must restart your computer) what do I need to do?
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. -
Why did I have a kernel panic?
I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.
Here is the message from panic.log:

Help! Eclipse Adapter Caused Kernel Panic
I tried to add a USB monitor to a Mac mini at church and it has a kernel panic.
I have a Mac mini at home and tried to set it up for service and loaded the same driver. It caused the same kernel panic.
So now I have two Mac mini computers that can only be opened in Safe Boot.
It is a Eclipse SEE2 Xtreme UV250. There is a warning to install drivers first before connecting the adapter. I didn't see it (dummy!)

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Did my Macbook have a Kernel Panic? ! ? !
Well let me start out by saying that this has happened twice. I put my computer to sleep by closing the lid. 5 min later I come back to the computer because I remembered that I had to do one small little task, so I open the lid to wake the computer and I get this ominous black menu "thing" (?) in the center of the screen telling me to restart the computer in 4 languages.
So..........
I restarted the computer both times, and everything seems to work fine. The machine really flys, but I read in another post that that might have been a "kernel panic" which all I know about kernel panics is that they are rare and not good.
I then decided to run the apple hardware test to see if I had faulty RAM or something, but it passed the Test with flying colors and no problems.
Should I be worried? This is only the second day I have had this computer.
I would also like to add:
Each time I closed the lid to put the computer to sleep, dashboard was up and running on the screen. Maybe that has something to do with it
Thanks in advance.
Macbook 2.0 1gb 60gb Mac OS X (10.4.6)Alright, I went into startup disk and found the panic log. Here is the information for the 3 kernel panics I've had. Can anybody interpret this and tell me whats up?

I have A kernAl panic thAt isn't responding to the shift key being depressed during boot. Any suggestions?
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems on a laptop, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.
