Help! "Use iTunes to restore.."(CAN'T!!)

Hi all,
I got an ipod nano.(4 gb)when i tried to open my ipod ,it gives an error "use iTunes to restore" then i try to restore but it gives an error "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore the ipod before it can be used with iTunes"
Hundreds of time i tried to restore but all of the time same error..
Anyone have any idea?
Ipod Nano 4 gb   Windows XP

My Problem iz rather weird nd strange. about a month back, my 2GB nano just freezed due to no apparent reason. i used the hold-menu-and-centre-key strategy to reset it and the next screen said somthing like USE ITUNES TO RESTORE. i connected it thru my USB cable to my PC and i tunes wudn't recognize it. then i used the updater which said can't mount iPOD. i then checked ur forums and tried tht manual disk mode to format it in my PC. but on right clickin on
iPOD(which shows as REMOVABLE DRIVE), nothing happens. no format screen iz displayed. but somehow trying again and again and restarting and shutting down the ipod service solved the matter. for testing, i copied one song with couple of photos in it. it worked reallly fine until i
formatted my pc.
I re-did the partitions, reinstalled the windows
and every software. then i downloaded the latest iTUNES(7.0.2) from apple's website. ripped a few cds on my pc, then opened iTUNEs to copy more music in my iPOD. just after the copy started, iTUNES gave error which had something to do with the transfer. i unpluggged my iPOD
after ejecting frm iTUNES and found the same freaky error (USE ITUNES TO RESTORE) again. as i had tackled thru this error earlier, so i repeated the same procedure but with latest iTUNES this time. i had to download the latest iPOD updater(1.3 i guess) too as it is not included in iTUNES.
and after every step, it is still giving the same error over and over again. i hav another pc which iz using the same windows with previous iPOD updater and iTUNES. that updater givez errors like CAN'T MOUNT iPOD,FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILURE, etc. and also hangs sometimes. and even if it
restores, the iPOD never restarts. when i use my other PC with newer iTUNES and new windows on it, it givez errors like UNKNOWN ERROR, etc. also after restoring, the iPOD restarts and shows the same USE ITUNES to RESTORE error. main probelm i m facing in restoring process thru disk mode iz tht whenever i right click on the iPOD in my COMPUTER, there r 99% chances that it wont show any format dialogue at all (even if the iPOD service isn't running)
kindly help me az i m tooo much fed up of this thing. i mite smash the nano onto my computer screen if nuthin helps :S
kindly reply soon. please note tht the country i live in doesn't giv support for iPODs and i received this product as a gift about an year back and has been working fine ever since (except last two times) also i cant afford to send it bak to UK or something like tht. so online
help wud b much appreciated...
also i cudnt find any POST new TOPIC button on these forums, kindly help me in tht regard too...
THANKING IN ANTICIPATION
P.S. i've tried it three different PCs with frsh installations. so suggest me something different also drive letter can't b changed for iPOD in disk manager..

My old iPod Nano says to use iTunes to restore and I've followed all suggested help steps, but I can't get it into disk mode nor can I get it to show in my computer or in iTunes.  I have the latest version of iTunes.  Windows has all the most recent updates too.  I can reset the iPod, but the message to Use iTunes to restore comes back and I am stuck.

Already tried another USB port, still nothing.
I don't have another PC to check, I only have one which is the one not working with my iPod.
It appears under my Computer, just not under iTunes. Plus, the iPod classic troubleshooting assistant doesn't work because I can't restore since it can't come up onto my iTunes! Even my iPod says "Use iTunes to Restore" once in a while, but I plug it in & I'm not able to restore it since it won't come up under iTunes.

  • "Use iTunes to restore". How can I access the iPod w/o losing present data?

I have a request from my grandaughter to download a number of songs to her iPod. I charged the battery fully. When I tried to start it , it read "Use iTunes to restore". How can I access her iPod w/o losing any of her present songs? Please please help.

You can't. Restoring will always erase the device. Unless you have a backup in iTunes or iCloud everything is removed. Purchased items can be re-downloaded as long as the original Apple ID used to purchase them is also used when reconfiguing the device after it is restored.

  • HELP! "Use ITunes to Restore" but need to backup :(

Okay so I have an 80 gb IPod classic. Not sure what generation it is, but I've had it for about 6 years. It has all my music on it, some that I cannot get back unfortunately. I cannot remember the last time (if ever) that I voluntarily backed up the IPod. Now out of nowhere after it being fine, I am getting the message "Use Itunes to Restore" over & over again. I know doing this will wipe away all of my songs, and I don't want that because I can't get a lot of them back. (The first 3 years of having my ipod I used a desktop that has since crashed)
My question is, does anybody know if there is a way for me to back up my iPod, and then do the restore? I've tried a hard reset and everything, but it just brings me back to the message about restoring. Please help in any way you can!

  • TS1456 My 4th Gen iPod Nano isn't displaying a "Use iTunes to restore" message, but iTunes is displaying a restore message when I connect it. I have original music that I can't back up on my iPod. Is there any way that I can fix the iPod without restoring

My 4th Gen iPod Nano isn't displaying a "Use iTunes to restore" message, but iTunes is displaying a restore message when I connect it. I have original music that I can't back up on my iPod. Is there any way that I can fix the iPod without restoring it?

It's not designed to work like this. When you sync, the iPod stores some information that basically says 'this iPod belongs to computer xyz'. Apple did this to prevent copyright issues (syncing someone else's music).
If you really want to do this, you'll have to at least tie both iTunes installations to the same account. Maybe have them sync with each other.

  • Help getting"use itunes to restore" error message

I connected my ipod to my friends computer to copy a program i had on their to his computer and i then i take my ipod out and get the "connect to your computer use itunes to restore: error message. I know i can just restore it im not going to do that becasue it would be the third time doing so. I get a error with the ipod software but when the ipod updater program comes on the only option is restoring. So i am wondering is there a way to reupdate the software? if not is there any other solutions not involving reformatting the whole ipod.
    Thanks in advance

    hey kurtis,
seems like you and i were having the exact same problem. i took mine to an apple service centre today. the guy said if he can restore it in store it'll cost me $44- for a service fee if not he'll send away for a replacement iPod for free as it is under warranty.
got 10 mins down the road and recieved a SMS from the apple account saying it couldnt be restored and therefore had faulty hardware or the like and so i should be recieving the new one friday.
i recommend if you're still under warrenty (you can check by entering the seriel # on the back of your iPod somewhere on this site) that you follow my lead, even if they fix it in store $44 is better than $450.
    cheers!

  • Use iTunes to restore...but can't!

I have a 2GB Nano. The display says "Use iTunes to restore" then underneath it has text in other languages. I plug the ipod in and itunes doesn't recognize it...nor does it show up in "My Computer". When I plug the ipod in, the display say "ok to disconnect" with a check mark. I've tried turning it off/on, toggling the hold button, etc. Help! My 8 year old son is not happy!

this is not the page you are to be on for the 2G ipod nano.

  • "Connect to Computer. Use iTunes to Restore" but can't 'see' it in iTunes

I got the error message on my iPod -- "Connect to Computer. Use iTunes to Restore iPod." Problem is, when I try to connect to my computer, it asks if I want to restore it with iTunes, I say yes, but iTunes doesn't 'see' the iPod, so I can't restore.
The iPod just sits with "Do not disconnect" on it and the battery icon moving. I'm dead in the water.
    Any ideas?

You might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

If that works, then you should be able to attempt a restore.

After I slide to power off my iphone 3GS it would not turn on again.Only the apple logo comes on and then it is off. If I connect to the power the apple logo comes
and then it comes on . I have just used itunes to restore my iphone. How can I make my iphone work again?

Keep using it untill it powers off, then charge it to full to re-calibrate the battery.
If problem persist, maybe your battery needs to be replaced.

  • My 5th gen Ipod won't do anything but show the " Connect to your computer, use itunes to restore" screen. However my computer nor anyone else's will recognize my ipod. What can I do?

My ipod will not do anything but show a screen that asks to "connect ipod to computer, use itunes to restore" My computer however will not recognize my ipod at all so there is no way to restore my ipod. I am not skilled in computers but if anyone has a step by step that would be great.

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC?  Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • "Connect to your computer. Use Itunes to restore" Help!

    Happy Holidays!
I am a first time Ipod user and I now have a 30GB that I am trying to figure out.
I was messing with it last night and it kept flashing "Do Not Disconnect" so I left it overnight to charge. It wasn't recognized in my Itunes at all (but was by my computer) which I figured because I haven't downloaded the latest version. In the morning, my computer had a message saying "Device was disconnected" and now I have a permanent message "Connect to your computer. Use Itunes to restore" and I am having a hard time resetting it.
Sorry if this is a stupid question! I have never used one before! Just trying to figure it all out.

    welcome to discussions!
Have you tried the five r's? (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/)
Also, to get rid of the Do Not Disconnect you have to eject your iPod. See the articles below for information on how to eject your iPod.

  • "Connect to your computer, use iTunes to restore" loop! Please help!!

Everytime I try to turn on my iPod, it gives me the "Connect to your computer, use iTunes to restore" message so I use iTunes to restore but once it's "done" restoring, it tells me the iPod is still in Recovery Mode and needs to be restored. Someone told me to change the file to a Fat32 file but it's already a Fat32. Someone else suggested to change the drive letter but , unless I'm not doing it right, that's not working either. Any other suggestions?? Thanks!

Yes, it does need to recognize the iPod in order for you to do something like this.
Have you first tried working through these troubleshooting steps to get your iPod recognized in iTunes?
