Help! Where'd my default fonts go?

We use FontReserve at work (which I loathe). And a few weeks ago I opened a Quark file and BAM! ...all my resident Mac programs went wacky: Mail, AddressBook, iCal, Safari... And they stayed that way even after I closed the file, closed Quark, and even turned off all the fonts in FR.
I told our IT guys that I thought FR had over-rode Apple's default font(s). But they went ahead and did all sorts of deleting and replacing... and now, everything is even more wacky!
I can turn on headers in Mail without TONS of space in between them (I have to scroll for days just to read an email), and the only message font I can choose from is Monaco (yuk). AddressBook, iCal and Safari are readable, but look very weird... the font is strangly thin, and there are no bolds or italics to be found.
All I want is to have my default Apple fonts back!
Help?
tia,
e

The advice about Pacifist on the FAQ was right-on. I grabbed my Tiger install DVD, used Pacifist to extract JUST the original font folders, and it automatically installed them in the right places... and VIOLA! All good!
Turns out, my IT peeps had erased the Helvetica! ...Um, thanks guys?

  • Need help on defining a default font in a JTextPane

    Hi, I'm currently programming a HTML Editor and I'm stuck with a problem I don't know how to solve:
    I have defined a default logical style for my JTextPane.
    I decided to set the font to "Arial". So here is how it goes:
    import javax.swing.text.StyleContext;
    import javax.swing.text.Style;
    Style styDefault = StyleContext.getDefaultStyleContext().getStyle(StyleContext.DEFAULT_STYLE);
    StyleConstants.setFontFamily(styDefault,"Arial");
    //tpEditor is a JTextPane
    tpEditor.setLogicalStyle(styDefault);
    I have also bound a CaretListener to my JTextPane so that
    it get and output display showing the font family of the character over which the caret is positionned.
    Alright, here is how all this behaves :
    When I run my HTMLEditor (a JFrame) and I click on the JTextPane, I get this
    in the output : "Arial" . This is correct, that's what I expect the output to display, the problem is that when I start typing text,
    even though the caret listener keeps sending to the output "Arial" for every key that I press, the displayed
    text is not Arial text, instead,it is this default font called "dialog". This is the code that I use to display the font over which the caret is positionned :
    //Code inside a CaretListener extended class
    System.out.println(StyleConstants.getFontFamily(tpEditor.getCharacterAttributes()));
    Another strange behaviour is the following :
    If I select, let's say "Verdana" from my JComboBox, any further typed text or an already selected
    portion of text has its font set to Verdana. Displayed text and font name sent to the output by the caret
    listener really match this time ( I set the font using Actions that are bounded to buttons I added to my JComboBox)
    If I erase text, typing on the backspace key, and I get to the beginning of the line (the
    border of the JTextPane), the font (which was set to Arial) is set back to this default font called "dialog"
    that I don't know how to get rid off.
    Does any one have any clue about this issue ? Is there a sort of background font that can't be changed ? It
    seems awkward to me to have to manage an event for when I get to the beginning of the line. There has to be
    a way of getting control over the default font (or style) of my JTextPane and it's associated document (which
    happens to be a HTMLDocument for me).
    Any help would be really appreciated,
    thanxs,

  • Anyone know how to change the default font for the new pages? Apparently it does not even come up when I search the 'Help' section of Pages. The level of incompetence in this new version seems breathtaking

    I cannot find how to change the default font in the new Pages. It does not appear in the Help area when I search for it. I am never sing Helvetica for my standard documents and cannot seem to change it. What am I missing? And why does Pages help not have an easy answer?

    You open a blank template and change the font to you liking. Remember to also get all the styles changed with new font. Then Save As Template. Now you have a template with the font you like.

  • How do I set default font size?

    Some programs (most importantly for me, Thunderbird) use a default font size that is too small for my eye comfort. Some (such as Firefox) allow me to change the font size, but Thunderbird does not (though there is a menu item to change font size, which does not work).
    I gather that such programs are using a default system font size. So I would like to change this. Some Help articles suggested that I could do this from the Font Panel, but they give no indication where to find the Font Panel. I cannot find it in System Preferences or via the Spotlight.
    I am using OS X 10.4.7
    I am computer-literate, but new to the Mac, having had this computer for about a week and a half.
    P.S. In Thunderbird -> Preferences -> Fonts there is an option to configure the fonts used by Thunderbird. The settings affect messages, but not the main window with the message list. However, at this point I'd really like to set the system default so all programs that use the system default will be affected.
    Thanks.
    Daniel

    This still does not work.
    I tried all of them.
    Theme Font & Size Changer
    Big Buttons
    Default FullZoom Level
    NoSquint.
    It only works for that page of that web site, as soon as you leave you start all over again.
    Can't we just say Firefox messed up and needs to revert to the way it used to work without have to do ANYTHING to adjust any sizing.
    This is utterly ridiculous.
    It's a web browser for GOD sakes...not the OS. It shouldn't be doing anything but displaying web sites with NO INTERVENTION by the user for each and every page.
    Why are programers always looking for ways to take a working product and make it useless???

  • Reinstalling Default Fonts in Mountain Lion

    Hi,
    After buying the new iMac and have used it for two day I noticed that some files were in the Trash folder including the Fonts folder (don't ask me how they got there becuase I would swear I didn't move them). Since I didn't know where the Fonts folder belones to (system or user folder) I search on the internet and some people sugested doing a restore using Font Book (File>Restore Standard Fonts), but this made it worse since when it when and check it deletes the existing folders so now I only have the folder that was in the trash and I'm for sure missing one folder.
    Is there a way to reinstall the default fonts in Mountain Lion without reinstalling the operating system?
    This is the only thing I found but this will reinstall the OS.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4201528?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks a lot

    You can use FontBook to find and delete duplicates.
    Have you checked for updates for your iWork?
    I did use FontBook to delete the duplicates.
    The applications were working fine before the reinstall, I checked for updates but it doesn’t show any for these applications.
    My problem with this is that I cannot reinstall these applications since I have them in a DVD and my computer doesn’t have a DVD drive.  I installed them sharing the DVD drive from my old MacBook but I sold it two days ago, the only thing I have is an Acer laptop but I don’t know if it is possible to share the drive.
    Is there a way to somehow put my DVDs in a USB drive, so I can install them without needing a DVD drive (assuming I can barrow my nephews Mac which has a DVD drive)?
    Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Email editor default font

    Hi all,
    We are using the email editor in the webclient, which is build-up via javascript.
    Now we are experiencing a problem with the default font.
    It should be arial 11, but it always shows Times New Roman.
    I have already played around with the tables TBTFFONTMAPDEF and TBTFFONTMAP.
    This doesn't change anything.
    I have deleted the Times new roman font from the table TBTFFONTMAPDEF (then the system dumps). I have set the Arial to language Dutch, but it always takes the language * also. I have deleted all fonts where language was equal to * except for Dutch, but since this is a dropdown, when you click on the box, it closes IE7...
    I have already tried filling the TBTFFONTMAP table, since this is a customer table. With no succes.
    Does anybody know how I can change this default font??
    Thanks in advance.
    Micha
    helpful answers will be rewarded!

    Hello Micha,
    Since you don't had any response yet, I'll share my experience in the past concerning this subject.
    I've also searched a way to change default font in ICWC 4.0 about two years ago. I didn't find any customization for this, and at the time I don't found any way to change the default font using only custom objects.
    I remember that the html dropdown box code is built at RENDER_DEFAULT_FONTNAME method, at class CL_BTF_BSP_EDITOR.
    Inside that method there is a call like this:
    l_configuration = document->get_configuration( ).
    In l_configuration variable, there is an attribute DEFAULT_FONT that is initially setted to value 'TIMES'. Unfortunally, even by changing this value in debugging, it didn't change the default font to another one.
    I ended giving up to do this changing (since was not important also). However, I hope this information may help you go a little further...
    Maybe in future releases the default font may be included in the email profile
    Best of lucks.
    Regards,
    Bruno

  • Replace missing fonts with default fonts

    I used fonts in my document that were not downloaded to my computer.  I would like to replace these fonts with the default fonts that the computer automatically substituted.  Is there any way to find out what fonts were used to make these substitutions?

    I realize this is an old post, but maybe it will still help.
    Was looking for the same functionality in Photoshop as in InDesign, where upon selecting "Replace all Missing Fonts", there would be a dialog box allowing me to choose the fonts to replace to. Instead, it just arbitrarily selects "Myriad Pro", regardless.
    My solve, as clunky as it is, worked OK if your whole document uses the same font for everything. E.g. a font across multiple slides of a presentation.
    Using the newer filtering options in the Layer menu, select the "Filter for Type layers".
    Select all the type layers with the yellow triangle warning.
    Go to your Type menu and select the font you want to replace to.
    You will be prompted for each layer to confirm the change, get ready to hit "OK" a lot of times.
    Click on the "Filter for Type Layers" option again to restore your full menu list.
    Should take care of the issue.
    With that said, this is a feature request that is well overdue!

  • Netscape default font query

    I seem to have this problem where the default font is italicized. I went to Appearances in the Preferences area, but I can't seem to change it.
    I'm using Netscape 7.02. I can't figure out what's going on.
    Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

    That's the weird thing. I even set it up so all my fonts are Arial (san serif), even the italicized choice.
    I don't think it happens all the time. Today I noticed it on an attachment I sent someone. It was from, I think, a word document. Actually it may have been done originally on a PC, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
    I know I sound stupid, but I can tell something's weird because, for instance, I went to web site and the home page was in italics. It seemed sort of strange. I looked at the source code and there was no font choice, so I figured it was the default. Even stranger, I went from Netscape to iCab and viewed the same page. It wasn't in italics (I think I'll go check out the default fonts in iCab).
    If you can help, that would be great. If this just seems like a mess, I understand that, too. Thanks

    Thanks Charles, I'm not sure where preferences are, I wish photoshop would

  • Howto set default font for JLabel & JTextField in JClient?

    Hi,
    JDev 10.1.2
    Can you please tell me how to set the default font for labels & textfields in JClient?
    For some reason the proposed font is now "Microsoft sans serif", before it was "Tahoma".
    I search the preferences all over and didn't found any clue.
    I know you can change the font of the source editor.
    I suppose the default font is taken from the OS environment, but where?
    I intend to deploy to linux so a Microsoft font doesn't suit me.
    I changed the style to bold for some labels and in this case the font parameter is part of the code.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hello
    The defaults reached thru the Terminal are not storing infos about the font used as default one in a template.
    I apologize but when I select all in a Numbers document and save it as a template, it doesn't match your requirements.
    Each time I insert a new table it defaults to HelveticaNeue.
    This is why I gave the tip which changes the font name in the Index.xml file.
    From my iDisk:
    <http://idisk.mac.com/koenigyvan-Public?view=web>
    you may download:
    :For_iWork:changeFont.zip
    which gives you the ability to do the job very easily.
    you may also download
    For_iWork:removePrintRecord.zip
    which removes the print Record embedded in our documents if this one is annoying.

  • Script UI default font on a Mac?

    Hi,
    I'd like to know what the default font is on the Mac for ScriptUI
    windows, when targeting the ESTK.
    For Windows it's SegoeUI.
    The following script should return the font:
    w = new Window("dialog");
    alert(w.graphics.font);
    Could someone with a Mac do me a favour and run that script from the
    ESTK, with the ESTK targeted? An indication of ESTK version would be
    helpful as well, I guess, if it's changed in the course of the various CS's.
    Many thanks,
    Ariel

    Shane, the JS Tool guide does not mention these standard fonts by name; SUI for Dummies mentions 'dialog', 'window', and 'palette'. (I have no idea where Peter Kahrel got those names from.) All three of'em return "Lucida Grande:13" on my Mac (CS4).
    None of the others you suggested return anything useful -- it just echoes the same word, which is SUI's way of saying "whatever you want, dude" for a font name it does not recognize:

    Hello,
    I'm trying to get a default font set for all word 2013 Users that access word via the Terminal Server. I have not been able to find any articles that shows how to get it done, though i found this technet link (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179141.aspx)

    Chris,
    My question extends beyond Word.  We have some older printers that do not have Calibri in them, so any office product that prints Calibri comes out garbage.  Some things simply cannot be changed as needed (ex: outlook body messages can not be changed).
    How can I change back to Arial for everything office produces.  Thanks in advance, my users are ready to kill me.
    Mark
    a) I haven't seen printers which use "hard" fonts in over 15 years - are you sure about that?
    b) this might help you:
