Help with clamshell ibook OS 9.2 upgrade to OS 10.6

I have a clamshell ibook OS 9.2 and I want to upgrade it to OS 10.6 so my mom can see her pictures from her new Canon Power Shot. I do have Leopard or 0S 5.6 but I cannot open the cd door to the clamshell it is broken. The exterior piece fell off.
Can I download from the internet what I need? Also is the clamshell able to support Canon Powershot software?

The iBook G3 clamshell FireWire model could upgrade to Tiger 10.4(.11)
+ the earlier, Panther 10.3.9. Some earlier Macs were able to use the Tiger
4 CD disc set (rare version) to install when the computer had no Combo
drive, only the early CD drive. And then, the RAM would need to be at the
max in either one to run their latest supported OS X operating system.
So the upgrade to Leopard 10.5(.8) version is out.
The idea of a USB card reader may allow
access to any jpg images from the camera.
This would avoid need to have camera software
in the computer. OS9.2 could access images.
I attach a few of my digital cameras direct to the
computer even though I do not use iPhoto or
have software download the images, because
there are times when the camera works better
as a card reader than some third-party reader.
The camera's memory card is seen as a disc
or drive on the desktop, so it should open if
double-clicked. Images could be dragged out.
Just don't mess up the card's file system.
A fairly good MacBook 13" could be bought
for about $300. with limited guaranty, from
reputable companies who rebuild them...
see wegenermedia online for an idea.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Please Help My Daughter - iBook G4 Needs Software Upgrade ??

I have recently inherited an iBook G4 1.2 GHZ 256 RAM I think 30 or 50 GB.  I cannot tell now because of what I did.  The iBook was not working and I found it had a bad solder on one of the chips (a common issue on this model).  Once repaired, it needed a new battery, and then it sprang right to life.  The iBook worked great - I could use Safari, Garage Band, etc, but due to it's age, Itunes did not work and so I thought if I reinstalled the original operating system (Panther 10.3.5 circa 2004) from the original discs, then I could upgrade from there until I found an iTunes version I could use with a newly reset iPod I had and use it basically just for music.  BIG MISTAKE. After I cleanly installed it all, I now cannot use Safari, profiler won't open and neither will most other applications - I double click them, they flash once and then go away on the sidebar.  So, I need to find a way to upgrade this machine past 10.3.5 so I can get it to work.  Right now, I can only get to the internet using ie for Mac 5.2 - UGH !!! Now I know why Apple stopped using that software.  Anyway, I was doing all of this to get a clean version of iTunes on it so as a surprise, my daughter could sell it and the iPod to raise money for a class trip she is taking to New York in the Spring of 2015.  Please please help me.  Is it as simple as getting updated OS software? I have tried a Tiger disc, but it stopped before it really even got started and said it could not be loaded.    I can see the previous user still has files under user and I can see the folder for the previous system, but they are not accessible. I do have a 27" Mac desktop if that will help me to upgrade the iBook in any way.  Thank you for reading all of this.  Please let me know what options I might have to get this running so it can be sold off. • Help with a iBook download.

I downloaded an interactive book on to my computer from iTunes.  It says "downloaded". I sync'd my iPad with it and it downloaded most of the book into my iBooks app, but will not finish the process nor will it let me delete it, open it or do anything else.  Any suggestions???  Thank you!!

You're problem is you purchased a PowePC Mac computer.  Apple left the PowerPC processor and architecture behind in 2006 when they switched to Intel cpu's and associated architecture.  For awhile, there was software being coded for both systesm, but as the Mac PowerPC has faded into history, and Intel Mac's came into their own, many developers have simply dropped all software support for PowerPC systems.
You will need to use archival sites to find older releases of software compatible with PowerPC.
for some you will find material
    e.g. adobe reader - http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4977
    firefox - http://www.oldapps.com/mac/firefox.php
But you will have to search for such versions, and for some software, you simply will not find anything available for PowerPC.
P.S. you also cannot update your OS X as 10.5 was the last release for PowerPC. OS X support for PowerPC machines officially ended with the release of OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) in 2009.  The emulation layer, Rosetta, was then finally dropped with OS X 10.7 (Lion), and Apple ended parts service and support for PowerPC machines in 2013.

  • Help with re-install of SL after upgrade

I installed SL upgrade over Leopard. Since then, I've had a lot of application crashes. From what I've read, it sounds like those who do a clean install don't have the crashes I'm experiencing. I want to now do a clean install.
Question: If I do a full Time Machine backup, then do an Erase and Install... can I then restore the Time Machine backup w/o overwriting the clean SL install?
Anything specific I need to know/set?
(I've not used TM before and can't quite find my answer)
    Thanks!

If you don't currently us TM then you can make a backup of what you do have using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the backup drive.
    Source means the startup drive.
Now boot from the SL DVD and after the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your current startup volume from the left sidebar, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window then click on the Erase button. After the erasing is completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the SL installation.
After the installation has completed and you restart the computer connect your backup drive. Open Migration Assistant from the Utilities folder. You can use Migration Assistant to migrate your Home folder and third-party application, preferences, and support files from your backup drive.

  • Tips and help with re-installing Lion over Snow Leopard

I had MAJOR issues with my initial Lion install on my Mid-2009 MBP- so much so, that I had to wipe my hard drive and re-install Snow Leopard and all my applications. My major issues were as follows:
    1. All my files were locked out- I could open them in most cases, but I couldn't overwrite them- Lion had aded some funky permissions scheme that I didn't recognize, and my user name wasn't present on any of them. In some cases, I couldn't even open files, even though they were resident on my hard drive (and in my own user folder) before the upgrade to Lion.
    2. Apple's own Universal Binary apps wouldn't work after the upgrade. Final Cut Pro 6, in particular, came up with a message that it was a "PowerPC" app and wouldn't run- yet Shake 4.1 would run just fine!
    3. Adobe Creative Suite 3- after the upgrade, my Abode Ceative Suite 3 apps worked just fine, for about a day- that is, until I tried to correct the file permissions issue by changing permission on a few of my folders in my User folder (and electing to change permissions in the files contained therein)- at which point my Adobe apps told me that they were damaged and needed to be reinstalled. Yet after uninstaling and reinstalling the entire Creative Suite 3 times, I still would get the same message.
My entire workflow is Adobe CS and FCS2- why chould I have to pay the upgrade costs just to use Lion? FCPX is completely brkoen for my workflow and eqipment, and Adobe can't even guarantee that CS5 works with Lion- so why does Apple insist on Lion when it's hardly even compatible with its own products?
I really want to use Lion, but I am looking for some tips on instalation to kep these problems from happening again. I didn' have ANY of these problems with upgrading OS 10.2 through 10.6. Any help with prepping my system/files for upgrading would be helpful. Thanks!

    any new Apple kB articles
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=articles
Me, I think clone backups are more useful, and only use T.M. as secondary.
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
I'd assume that professional apps may need to be tested still; and of course check to see what you have that depends on PowerPC code and Rosetta first. That has some in a tither.
A clone lets you still be able to boot Snow Leopard. Check out Carbon Copy, SuperDuper.

  • Help me with this iBook!!!! Please.

    Hi everyone,
I am new to Apple Discussions and am having a issue ; I received a iBook notebook with running 10.1.5 ; I noticed Internet Explorer ( not safari ) which after reading up on, apparently was stopped as of 2005. I looked when the last update was completed on this iBook and it was 2004/2005.
There are a few things I wish to do; but am running into issues.
1- I want to reset back to how it 'once' was.  Issue with this is I do not have any disks for it. I only recieved it with usb mouse/tv adapter/wall plug. So no 'boot' disk. I heard there are ways around this ( considering the iBooks age ) vs. how it was before.
2- I wish to update all software/hardware to as new as possible. Issue with this is ; it's my first Mac OS. So honestly I have no idea how or what to do.
3- find where in the system I can find out all of this iBooks information ( which is OS it runs, what the ram is, what the hdd space is; basically all the specs )
I know this Mac has a lot of history.  I just hope someone can come to my rescue.
I will be completely honest ; please use as "dummified" language as possible.  I am no good with computers.  I have always been a pc fan ( except I love my iPhone ).
Anything anyone can do would be most helpful.  I know with this being a older device not all the data is easily found.  I am willing to download a install disk to a USB drive if needed.
Since I directly can't find the specs for this iBook I did find the -easily found- 'about this Mac' and it is the following :
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.1.5
    Memory 256 MB
    Processor PowerPC G3
    Apple computer inc. 1983-2001
    If that helps at all.
    Thanks,
    Justin - Poser Punx

    Hi Justin,
1- I want to reset back to how it 'once' was.  Issue with this is I do not have any disks for it. ... So no 'boot' disk.
That's a show stopper right there.
You can revert an iBook to its originally shipped condition without its original installation discs, but to do so would require another boot device containing its original installation disc image. Apple may be able to sell you a copy but may not give you the time of day without paying a modest fee for technical support. Given these challenges I don't recommend even attempting to revert that Mac to its originally shipped condition.
It's a shame to dishonor its tenth anniversary with this comment, but OS X 10.1.5 is, frankly, horrible. You ought to be able to upgrade it to Tiger, and original Tiger discs are available on the used market. They are not cheap. You will need the retail version which is distinguished with a big X on a black background - grey discs are machine-specific and will not work.
The earliest iBooks can only be upgraded to Panther.
Your first task is to identify the exact hardware model. Click the  menu and select "About this Mac..." or words to that effect. There may be a "More Info..." button in that window. If there is click it and see if you can find out there. I don't recall what its nomenclature was with OS X 10.1. I've been trying to suppress those memories.

  • Help with system upgrade for CS6

Hello. I am hoping you can give me some advice on what to do (or buy) to improve my video editing system.  I am a bit of novice when it comes to the technical/hardware end of things and I’m having some issues with my current system.
I working in Adobe CS6 Master Suite on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC.  I mainly use Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Audition.  I create very complete animations and videos with many layers and effects (via Boris & Red Giant).  I also use Skype to record group video calls (with the program Evaer) for a reality T.V. recap show which I also edit with my Adobe suite.  However I have two main problems.
When I render out a 20 minute premier pro project (with several HD video layers and effects) it takes almost 13 hours.  It seems like this is very long considering my high end components, and set up.  For example I run ONLY my OS off an SSD.  My programs are on another SSD.  The files I use for the video are on another HDD, and I render to another HDD.  I was told by keeping all the aspects on separate hard drives it would speed everything up.  Is that true?  I also am now reading that rendering to a SSD would speed things up.  Should I consider changing my workflow/hard drive set up that way?
My other problem is that when I record my Skype group calls of 4 people (with Evaer) to my SSD the audio is always off when I bring it into Premiere.  I don’t know if this is a problem with Evaer, a codec (it records it as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Codec.  At 1280 X 720 and 30fps), that SSDs auto compress files, or that my system just cant handle it.  Plus Soundblaster & Nvida both seem to active as audio features on my system I don’t know if that effects anything.  Is there any advice any of you have on this issue as well?  Perhaps another program to record skype or group calls?
Finally… all that aside.  Considering the work I am doing should I just upgrade my system to a better Mobo and graphics card.  I see a lot of people are recommending a dual processor work station.  If so what is a good motherboard, and processor(s) I should get if I build my own workstation?  I have about $4000.00 I could invest in building one if you think would greatly improve my work flow and render times.  I also have a quadro k5000 on the way, and id like to be able to use the memory I have already.
I realize I am asking a lot of questions.  I would truly appreciate any help, advice or just a point in the right direction.  I have included my current system specs below incase that helps with any of my questions.  If you have any other questions or need more information just let me know.  Thank you again in advance for any help you can provide.

    Eric,
I would hardly call the Quadro card an upgrade to a GTX 680!
Regarding getting more speed from a faster MB / CPU, since you already have a 6-core rig with 24GB of RAM I would think that any gains you would get would not be that dramatic.
Check out your cpu usage (Task manager) and see how busy your cores are during a test render. I am guessing that the Boris and / or Red Giant effects could be jumping your projects from gaining the full multi-core capabilities of the Adobe software.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!
