Help with Internet Connection

Hi, Have just installed a NetgearDG834G to my imac G5 with success as far as the connection was concerned. Safari works a treat and it's nice to have a permanent connection. However when I log onto AOL I cannot get any websites to open no matter how long I wait (password required for AOL).
AOL were no help. They say that they do not support AOL on a mac (in the UK that is). I am stuck on a 12 month contract after running a windows PC with AOL before buying the mac. Previously I was using a USB modem.
Being a novice with mac OS and only had the G5 for a month it is probably something I am doing wrong! Can anyone offer any guidance/advice?
Although I can use safari to browse, when I try to use the login from my bank's website nothing happens, just a blank screen.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Keith

Hi,
After much of checking this, checking that and searching through manuals ect an article suggested that I change the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit!!) in the router settings. AOL(UK) have a maximum MTU rate of 1400. The router/modem was set at 1458 as default. I went into the router setup and found the MTU in LAN settings and changed it to 1400.
Apparently changing the MTU setting can help improve performance with an ISP or other internet services. For example Yahoo Mail, MSN and in particular AOL(UK). However it is advised to proceed with caution in every case!!!
Connection is a lot better now, although not as good as I expected (maybe I'm just expecting to much from a broadband connection).
Rod - If your reading this I also enabled pop-ups (Java was already checked) Perhaps this helped as well. No doubt there will be something else to frustrate in the near future. Thanks again to those who replied and I hope this thread may help someone else with a similar problem. These forums really are a great help.
Cheers

• Help with Internet connection (WRT54G)

Hopefully someone has some helpful advice to my question.
I'm not too sure where my problem is.  I think it's in the modem, but could be the router (less likely as explained).
I recently set up to open a few ports (I dont remember the exact #s) through port forwarding for Warcraft III.  To do so, you need to set up a custom IP for your connection through 192.168.1.1xx.  I did all this and was happy to see that I could now host online games for Warcraft III.  Fast forward to a week ago (I probably turned my desktop on about 3 times between the first time of opening ports and from successful uses until now) and I am unable to connect to any sort of Internet, on my desktop only.  My 3 laptops I have work just fine, but my desktop will not connect.  I'm not a computer dummy (but no computer expert either, I know my stuff) and have tried everything I could think of between setting up static IPs (192.168.1.99 is a static IP I do believe?) to obtaining IP addresses automatically to turning off the router and modem, etc. and nothing.  I am unable to even get to 192.168.1.1 to try and change my past changes and see if that would work.  Because of that, I'm at a loss.
Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.  I can still access everything on my desktop, there's just simply no internet connection.
Thanks in advance

there seems to be consistant issues with Linksys routers according to all the posts ive been reading for the past month while i try to fix my on and off again internet connection.  its becomming very annoying.  i have asked my cable company to replace my modem, which they did and that didn't even help.  last year i bought a new linksys router thinking it would solve my problem back then.  it did for a while, then my lap top wouldn't connect any, so i sent it into have it checked and it came back with no problems.  soooooooooo apparently, while i am connected to my neighbors open connection from his BELKIN ROUTER and even though the signal is very weak............amazingly enough!! i am still online while typing this.......funny eh?? WELL........it seems to me......that i guess i wont be buying linksys anything anymore.  Especially after spending hours on the help line (INDIA) trying to reset channels and reset the router box itself.  i give up.......i  have 2 pieces of crap routers for sale cheap......any takers?  dont waste your time.

• Help with internet connection please????

I am currently running 2 iMacs on Mountain Lion, one iMac Mavericks, iPad Air, 2 iPad minis, iPad 2 , 4 iPhones, Apple TV and an Xbox One in my home. I also have a time capsule and an airport Express and an Ethernet switch.
We recently had an internet switch to LTE from WBBI. Our internet worked great on the WBBI but since switching to LTE, it has been a nightmare for ALL devices. The internet connection is continually disconnecting. I have tried using the Time Capsule as a bridge, taking the Time Capsule and Airport Express out of the equation all together, rebooting, rerouting, you name it and no success.
My internet service provider put a trace on my line and found it was working normally. No one else in my area seems to have any problems but they are running pcs.  This is the only internet available where I live. When using our personal hotspots, everything works like a dream but since we are running a business, a 10Gb data cap per month just won't cut it should we choose to go strictly to hotspots for internet. Lol!
The current router is a Huawei For LTE. Devices wired in and on the wifi network are affected the same. The Internet technicians switched out some equipment concerned that there may be a hardware problem and their PC laptop worked perfectly. I am beginning to believe it an apple issue. I have been fighting this for 2 months and cannot find a solution.
Help?

Does the Xbox work?  It is not Apple equipment.  That is to say, remove ALL other equipment from the "Huawei For LTE" and JUST attach the Xbox.  Does that work flawlessly?  If it also fails, it is not Apple equipment, and you need to hound your ISP to get this fixed.  Have them prove it work using equipment they bring, and then when they say, yea, it work, have them try your Macs.
If the Xbox works, then disconnect everything (including your switch).  Now using an Ethernet cable connect 1 Mac.  Can you get that to work?  If no, try the other Mac.  If not to both Macs, then your ISP is rather hostile to Mac   Actually, check your System Preferences -> Network Settings.  Assuming you have the original "Automatic" settings, that should be as standard as it comes.  You might try adding System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP -> DHCP Client ID -> aSimpleUniqueName (long shot to see if it makes the LTE provided router happy).

• Problem with internet connect?

Hi,
I have installed a Netgear wireless router, which is connected to my eMac by an ethernet cable. I can access the internet through Firefox without a problem, but when I try to check software update or get to the itunes store it says it cannot connect to the internet. I think that this must be something to do with internet connect, as when I log in a error message comes up on the screen and also the only options for connection when internet connect is opened is BT Voyager 105 (the previous ADSL Modem) and Internal Modem.
If anyone can offer any advice I would be very grateful!
Thanks very much,
Claire

Hi David,
I opened up Safari, went to preferences, and then clicked the advanced tab. There should be a button saying 'Proxies: change settings', I clicked on this and it opened up the network settings (through system preferences),and found that it was trying to connect through an old proxy set up whilst it was on a university network. I simply highlighted the proxy (xxxx.ac.uk), pressed the delete key, and then clicked on the apply now button. All seemed to work then! I suspect I was just lucky that this was the only cause of the problem, as it seems that some people have not been able to resolve their problem this way.
Hope this helps in some way,
Claire

• Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

That's what I would have thought, but even after saving the setting, as soon as I shut down my computer or log out of Mail, it automatically defaults back to 25. It's a bit frustrating.
Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of those horrible pop-up banners but still have my glass sound and number of emails in the red dot when I get an email...
These little tweaks are the only thing I HATE about upgrading my OS.

Chuck's Dilema

Hi Chuck,
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/
Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
Also...
The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

Flash player 11.1 hack on PowerPC - https://discussions.apple.com/message/16990862
Might be later ones around also... saw 11.3 I think.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
See in each Browser which version of Flash it thinks it has...

• Problem with Internet connection sharing between eMac and Powerbook G3

Hi,
I seem to be having a slight problem with internet connection sharing.
My eMac is the main machine with the internet connection, and its running 10.4.6, the Powerbook G3 is running 10.2.8.
I can connect them all up and get online with both, but I the problem I am having is when I turn the Firewall on on the eMac, the powerbook can't connect.
Is there anyway I can keep the Firewall enabled and still use internet connection sharing?

How do I know which ports the Powerbook is using?
Also I had web sharing enabled on the eMac and it made no difference at all.
Plus I don't know if this means anything to you, trying to decipher it myself, all I can make out myself on there is port 80.

• Why am I having trouble with Internet connect?

I have just set up a broadband connection using a USB modem on my phone line. I have to reconnect each time I wake the computer from Sleep as the Modem gets its power supply through the USB port. Sometimes it takes several attempts to establish a connection. I have checked the configuration (several times). Is the problem most likely to be:
a) With Internet Connect ?
b) With my ISP?
C) With the modem?
G4 ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
G4 ibook

My guess, the modem.
It's probably taking some time for the USB modem to power up, perform its startup tests, load its configuration and be ready to respond to the network.
It's one of the reasons I never recommend USB DSL routers.
If the modem supports direct power (vs. being powered by the USB line) you can try using that - at least that way the modem won't power down and need to do its whole startup process again. Either that or replace the USB modem with an ethernet-based one that won't have this problem.

• Anyone having trouble with internet connection after downloading mountain lion

After installing Mountain lion to my mid 2011 imac 21" I am having trouble with my internet connection.  Anyone else have to deal with this?

Are you on 10.8.2 as ypur profile says? If so, it's worth updating to 10.8.3 which was released last week.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640
Here's a link to some suggestions that helped some users with similar problems in Lion. May still be relevant to MLion. Also check the links within the article:

Also when I had wifi problems in the past, creating a new network location resolved it:

I've also seen threads where users with wifi problems have successfully solved them by changing the channel in the router's wifi settings.

• Trouble with internet connection after update to Snow Leopard

Happily surfing the internet with the most recent update of Tiger until deciding to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that I could connect to a wireless printer. Noticed almost immediately that Safari was spotty, sometime normal, but often painfully slow. Have checked forums that suggest dumping caches, reseting Safari, repairing permissions, doing fresh install of SL. Nothing has worked. Can't even get internet with Firefox. Internet connection seems to work after I start up, but then fails after 5-10 minutes. Most of the time it doesn't work at all. Doesn't seem to be a problem limited to Safari since Firefox won't work either. Phone support tried saying that SL likes a WPA router connection and not WEP, which is the current setup.
Finally, I decided to boot to my clone of Tiger. After a little bit of fussing around setting up the internet connection over Airport everything works just fine! What's wrong with SL and how can I fix it. Really like the iLife11 upgrade and being able to print wirelessly, but if I can't get internet access that makes it rather pointless. Know this is a lot and rather hastily written, but please help!

Hello
Sorry, I have no answer to your problem. I just want to share that I amexeprience similar issues with my iMac since I upgraded to Snow leopard :
The LAN connection of the iMac slows down after accessing Internet, usually less that one hour. I can measure it through an Internet throughput utility on my provider's home page.
I have two Macs connected on the same DSL box, with the same OS version, Snow leopard, and nearly the same sofwtare configuration. Thus I can compare the Internet access speed :
After starting the computers, it is above 12 Mb/s.
On the iMac that I use most for Internet, it slow down to more or less 2 Mb/s after a few minutes, whereas it stays at 12 Mb/s on the MacMini.
Because of this, I believe it is LAN problem, not an Internet/DSL problem.
The same phenomenon happens if I connect to my DSL/Router with Ethernet or with Airport. The speed drops to similar values, below 3 Mb/s. Thus, the problem dose not seem to be related to LAN connection hardware.
Curiously, the speed is high again after shutting down and restaring the iMac. But it slows down again after a few minutes. Putting the computer to sleep does not help to restore maximal speed: it has to be shut down.
From all this, I draw the conclusion that the problem lies in a LAN software layer that is common to Ethernet and Airport and that is restarted only after shutdown.
I am using the MacMini as a reference for Internet access performance, in order to have a benchmark for iMac performance. I hav enot tried yet if the LAN performance of the MacMini collapses in a similar way if I use it to surf on the net.
I hope this will be helpfull do draw some attention from experts at Apple. It looks like a bug in a Snow Leopard LAN software layer.

• Need help sharing internet connection between pc and mac using airport

Hello
I have a PC with an internal modem that connects to the internet via 3g+. it's got wi-fi as my macbook.
i want to share the internet connection of the pc via wifi (using what is called an "ad hoc" connection ( a pc to pc network)) so that the mac can connect to the pc (via wifi) and use its internet connection.
i've already tried a bunch of things but they don't work, can someone help me or tell me where i can find a GOOD guide to do this? (i've already looked around but i haven't found anything that works)
thanks

Hi. I'm not sure if this helps, but I just found a nice way to do it the other ways around (share the internet from your mac with your pc).
See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
The main idea is that MAC-WEP and PC-WEP are not quite the same, so this tweak makes them line up. Perhaps you can do it the other way around from PC to MAC by sort of reversing the idea?
Hope that helps you!

• Configuration update with Internet Connect and connection blockage

I have been having the same sort of problems (i.e., suddenly for no apparent reason, being unable to get or maintain an internet connection). I use an internal modem and Earthlink to connect, not dsl or cable. I ran across a discrepancy concerning configuration updates between the three places that allow me to select "Connect" (1) Sys Prefs-->Network-->can select from different configs/locations (2) Internet Connect-->can select from different configs, and (3) Earthlink's Total Access-->can select from different configs/locations.
I noticed that in Internet Connect the dots that represent my password were longer than that in Sys Prefs-->Network, but all Keychains contained the shorter, correct password. I can't change the password nor change or delete the configs in Internet Connect.
When I created a new config/location via SysPrefs-->Network, it showed up in Total Access, but not a peep of it in Internet Connect. Have tried trashing the prefs files for Internet Connect as well as deleting almost all keys in Keychain that relate to online access. No change.
I can now get and maintain a connection only if I connect using Network or Total Access. Any ideas on how to fix Internet Connect application?

I don't know if I can help much, but I think elko has the right idea about repairing permissions after an update. It's good practice to use Disk Utility to verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the disk. This will sometimes resolve the problem.
Another thing to check is all your settings for internet under system preferences. I have heard about things ending up too low in the heirarchy and not working properly for reasons that are unclear. You may be able to reconfigure it.
It is also possible you have an airport card that is failing intermittantly. You can try running the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
You could also try turning off the airport and seeing if you can connect by dial up using the internal modem. If you can, the problem may be with the airport. If you cannot, there is something else going on.
One long shot might be to turn the computer off and remove both the power cord and the battery for 30 minutes or so. You will have to reset the date and time after this. But sometimes things do "reset" and start working again.
As it happens, I have not had any problems on my iBook G4 following the latest updates, so it is likely not too common a problem. Your question has been out here for some time, and I hope someone more knowledgeable than I am will be able to suggest more things to try.
Please post back and let us know if anything has helped.
Good luck!

• HT1349 problems with internet connections

ISSUE : I am having trouble loading common internet sites like youtube, ebay, google, etc. This issue doesn't occur everytime but often enought for me to seek help. This is my first Macbook and I dont know if it is the computer or if it is a issue with my internet provider. Also, strange enough my girl friend's Acer computer (Window 7) has no issue with failed connections. We can be sitting side by side and my computer not load a site while hers loads the site without issue. I would appreciate any help on the issue.

Have you checked to see if a firmware update is available for your router?
And what specifically are the symptoms? Do you get a connection, but no apps work? Is it able to find the network at all?

• Issues with internet connection.  Logic board?

I have a 17" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, serial ...GV3R9.  More often than not my internet gets disconnected.  The Wi-Fi icon indicates it is ON, but there is no connection at all.  Then if I manually turn OFF the Wi-Fi, it won't turn back ON again until I restart my computer, sometimes more than once until the internet connection is active again.  I could not identify a pattern of when the Wi-Fi turns OFF.  I suspect something could be wrong with the Logic Board, but I don't know how to diagnose it.  Any ideas?

Does this WIFI issue happen everywhere (other networks outside your home) or is it limited to your home WIFI network?  If it's just your home, then the problem is with your home router.  If the problem is everywhere, then it's suggested that you back up all your personal data and then erase and reload the OS on the laptop first and retest the wireless capabilities before loading anything back on it.  If it works fine, then it was just a borked OS load.  Restore your stuff and go from there.  If it behaves the same way, then it could be hardware related, but it's probably just the WIFI card on it and not the entire logic board.
