Help with Java project!!!

Please help me out with this, I've written this as a start to my program about kids grades and it won't compile!! I've tried everything, I just have no clue why it won't work.

What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!

Again, I've been all around the bushes trying to alter this but I still get 13 errors! Everytime a mark is entered I am trying to add it into the correct category so that at the end I can see how many have firsts, seconds, thirds etc. I just cannot see what I'm doing wrong.

  • Collage Students need help with Java project(Email Server) whats analysis?

    Hi im studying in collage at the moment and i have just started learning java this semester, the thing is my teacher just told us to do an project in java , since we just started the course and i dont have any prior knowledge about java i was wondering if some one could help me with the project.
    i choose Email Sevice as my project and we have to submit an analysis and design document , but how the hell am i suppose to know what analysis is ? i just know we use ER diagrams & DFD's in the design phase but i dont know what analysis means ?
    could some one tell me what analysis on an email service might be? and what analysis on a subject means? is it the codeing involved or some thing coz the teacher told us not to do any codeing yet so im completly stumped,
    oh and btw we are a group of 3 students who are asking u the help here coz all of us in our class are stupmed ?

    IN case any one is interested this is the analysis i wrote
    ANALYSIS
    Analysis means figuring out what the problem is, maybe what kinds of solutions might be appropriate
    1.     Introduction:-
    The very definition of analysis is an investigation of the component parts of a whole and their relations in making up the whole. The Analysis done here is for an emailing service called Flashmail, the emailing service is used to send out mails to users registered with our service, these users and there log activities will be stored in some where, the most desirable option at this time is a Database, but this can change as the scope of the project changes.
    2.     Customer Analysis:-
    We are targeting only 30 registered users at the moment but this is subject to change as the scale changes of the project .Each user is going to be entitled to 1MB of storage space at this time since we lack the desired infrastructure to maintain anything higher than 1MB but the end vision of the project is to sustain 1000 MB of storage space while maintaining a optimal bandwidth allocation to each user so as to ensure a high speed of activity and enjoyment for the Customer.
    The Service will empower the user to be able to send, read, reply, and forward emails to there specified locations. Since we are working on a limited budget we cant not at this time enable the sending of attachments to emails, but that path is also left open by modularity of java language, so we can add that feature when necessary.
    3.     Processor Load Analysis:-
    The number of messages per unit time processing power will be determined on hand with various algorithms, since it is best not to waste processor power with liberally distributing messages per unit time. Hence the number of messages will vary with in proportion to the number of registered users online at any given time.
    4.     Database Decision Analysis:-
    The High level Requirements of the service will have to be decided upon, the details of which can be done when we are implementing the project itself. An example of high level requirements are database management, we have chosen not to opt for flat files because of a number of reasons, first off a flat files are data files that contain records with no structured relationships additional knowledge is required to interpret these files such as the file format properties. The disadvantages associated with flat files are that they are not fast, they can only be read from top to bottom, and usually they have to be read all the way through. Though there is are advantages of Flat files they are that it takes up less space than a structured file. However, it requires the application to have knowledge of how the data is organized within the file.
    Good databases have key advantage over flat files concurrency. When you just read stuff from file its easy, but tries to synchronize multiple updates or writes into flat file from scripts that run in different process spaces.
    Whereas a flat file is a relatively simple database system in which each database is contained in a single table. In contrast, relational database systems can use multiple tables to store information, and each table can have a different record format.
    5.     Networking Analysis:-
    Virtually every email sent today is sent using two popular protocols known as SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions).
    1.     SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
    The SMTP protocol is the standard used by mail servers for sending and receiving email. In order to send email we will first establish a network connection to our SMTP server. Once you have finished sending your email message it is necessary that you disconnect from the SMTP server
    2.     MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)
    The MIME protocol is the standard used when composing email messages.

  • Help with java project... stuck!!!!

    Create a TrafficLight that models a traffic signal for a simple four-way intersection.
    In this kind of intersection, there are really only two directions of traffic flow, which for convenience I'll abbreviate as ns and ew for north-south and east-west. There's nothing fancy here; either ns traffic is moving or ew is moving, or the signal is in the failure state and is blinking red in all directions.
    Here's the outline of the new class, which I called FourWayTwoSignal for lack of any better ideas:
     Data members: two Traffic Light objects for the two ns and ew directions.
     Default constructor: Both lights start off red and non-blinking.
     toString: Have the string representation of this new object use a format like: <ns:red, ew:green> where for each direction it shows either the color of the light or the word blink.
     fail: Both lights go to blinking red.
     reset: Both lights go to non-blinking red.
     cycle: The light cycling is a little more complicated here, but can be broken down like this:
    o If both lights are blinking red, they stay that way (only a reset operation can fix this).
    o If both lights are non-blinking red (the initial or reset state), start the cycle going by cycling the ns light to green.
    o If one light is red and the other isn't (this is the normal operating state), cycle the non-red light to its next color. If this causes that light to change to red, then also cycle the other light so that the other traffic direction now sees green.
    1. Both blink
    2. Both red
    3. One red, the other green or yellow
    And note that combination 2 should only appear when the light is first created or just after a reset; as soon as you invoke the cycle operation, combination 2 changes to some variation of combination 3.

  • Help with java mapping

    PI File adapter has a processing option u2018Empty-Message Handlingu2019 to ignore or Write Empty Files. In case there is no data created after mapping on target side then this option determines whether to write an empty file or not. But there is a catch to this option when it comes to using it with File Content Conversion which is described in SAP Note u2018821267u2019. It states following:
    I configure the receiver channel with File content conversion mode and I set the 'Empty Message Handling' option to ignore. Input payload to the receiver channel is generated out of mapping and it does not have any record sets. However, this payload has a root element. Why does file receiver create empty output file with zero byte size in the target directory?  Example of such a payload generated from mapping is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns1:test xmlns:ns1="http://abcd.com/ab"></ns1:test>
    solution :
    If the message payload is empty (i.e., zero bytes in size), then File adapter's empty message handling feature does NOT write files into the target directory. On the other hand, if the payload is a valid XML document (as shown in example) that is generated from mapping with just a root element in it, the File Adapter does not treat it as an empty message and accordingly it writes to the target directory. To achieve your objective of not writing files (that have just a single root element) into the target directory, following could be done:
    Using a Java or ABAP Mapping in order to restrict the creation of node itself during mapping. (This cannot be achieved via Message Mapping)
    Using standard adapter modules to do content conversion first and then write file.
    can someone help with java mapping that can be used in this case?

    Hi,
        You have not mentioned the version of PI you are working in. In case you are working with PI 7.1 or above then here is the java mapping code you need to add after message mapping in the same interface mapping
    import java.io.FileInputStream;
    import java.io.FileOutputStream;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.OutputStream;
    import java.util.Map;

    import javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory;
    import javax.xml.transform.Transformer;
    import javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory;
    import javax.xml.transform.dom.DOMSource;
    import javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamResult;

    The code for PI 7.0 should also work for PI 7.1 provided you use the right jar files for compilation, but vice-versa is not true.
    Could you please let us know if this code was useful to you or not?

  • Need help with calculator project for an assignment...

    Hi all, I please need help with my calculator project that I have to do for an assignment.
    Here is the project's specifications that I need to do"
    """Create a console calculator applicaion that:
    * Takes one command line argument: your name and surname. When the
    program starts, display the date and time with a welcome message for the
    user.
    * Display all the available options to the user. Your calculator must include
    the arithmetic operations as well as at least five scientific operations of the
    Math class.
    -Your program must also have the ability to round a number and
    truncate it.
    -When you multiply by 2, you should not use the '*' operator to perform the
    operation.
    -Your program must also be able to reverse the sign of a number.
    * Include sufficient error checking in your program to ensure that the user
    only enters valid input. Make use of the String; Character, and other
    wrapper classes to help you.
    * Your program must be able to do conversions between decimal, octal and
    hex numbers.
    * Make use of a menu. You should give the user the option to end the
    program when entering a certain option.
    * When the program exits, display a message for the user, stating the
    current time, and calculate and display how long the user used your
    program.
    * Make use of helper classes where possible.
    * Use the SDK to run your program."""
    When the program starts, it asks the user for his/her name and surname. I got the program to ask the user again and again for his/her name and surname
    when he/she doesn't insert anything or just press 'enter', but if the user enters a number for the name and surname part, the program continues.
    Now my question is this: How can I restrict the user to only enter 'letters' (and spaces of course) but allow NO numbers for his/her surname??

    What you could do is checking the input string for numbers. If it contains numbers, just reprompt for the Name.
    AND you might want to ask yourself why the heck a calculator needs to know the users Name.

  • Help with Java Web Start

    Hi everybody,
    I have a simple Java application that has a JFrame containing a TextField displaying some text inside it. I am using the NetBeans IDE. I am trying to Enable Java Web start for this application. The steps I have taken upto now are:
    1. Right click on Project, Java Web Start -> Enable Java Web Start. This created the jnlp file.
    2. In the Resources section, I added the jar file for swing. ( I am not sure if I have to add the path for jnlp.jar etc, or are these found automatically?)
    3. Right click on Project, Java Web Start -> Deploy with Java Web Start. This launches the browser with the Click me link, but on clicking this link, I get the following error.
    description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.

    I am not sure what it has to do with servlets, I just followed a tutorial on using Netbeans with Java Web Start, and did only the steps as mentioned in my first post. And ended up with the error.
    Anyways, I added the jnlp jar files(jnlp.jar, jnlp-servlet.jar, jardiff.jar) in the WEB-INF/lib directory. And it seems to deploying it now. I can get my application to load on clicking on the "Click me" link. But the controls on my application don't seem to be working.
    Also, when I try to Right click on my project -> Java Web Start -> Run with Java Web Start, I get the following error message,
    javaws-run: C:\Documents and Settings\Lux\Visualization\nbproject\build-jaws-impl.xml:36: Execute failed: java.io.IOException: CreateProcess: C:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin\javaws "file:///C:/Documents and Settings/Lux/Visualization/Visualization.jnlp" error=2

  • Help with java coding involving stacks and queues.

    I was wondering if anyone can help with tips on what to fill in for the coding.
    My project is to creating a word processor by the process of 2 stacks. The methods are given, but I'm not really sure what goes in them. So I was wonder if anyone can answer this for me, or give tips that would be great thanks.
    Example Code, similar to what were suppose to do, but instead it's CHARACTER stacks rather than String.
    [http://www.cs.jhu.edu/~jason/226/hw3/source/EditableString.java]

    /** Stack of Characters to the left of the cursor; the ones

      /** Stack of Characters to the right of the cursor; the ones

    Yes - Then why can't you read the comments above each method. Is it really that hard to understand?

    One way is to
    1) pass a reference of the Window object to the USDListener class, and set a local Window variable say call it window, to this reference.
    2) Give the Window class a public method that returns a String and allows you to get the text from USDField. Same to allow you to set text on the euroField.
    3) Give the Listener class a Converter object.

  • New @ RMI need help with  java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling

    Hi @ all out there,
    I'm new with Java RMI and have to write a EventSystem for an college project where clients can subscribe to a topic and get notified when someone publishes a message to the subscribed topic.
    At server-side I have a class called EventSystem that provides methods for subscribing and unsubscribing from topics, and also for posting messages (for publishers).
    To subscribe i thought that the client must specify the topic and also itself ( means that a client calls in this way: obj.subscribe("mytopic", this).
    The EventSystem handles a list of all clients, and whenever a new message is posted it goes trough all clients and invokes the handleMessage(String msg) method that all Clients have to provide.
    On my local machine without RMi this concept works just great.
    I now tried to get it working using RMI , but I get the following Exception when starting the client (the server starts fine) :

  • Help with J2EE Project Management

    Hi,
    We are about to begin a large J2EE project and are wondering if anyone could help with the following questions:
    1. Given the division of labor on J2EE projects (JSP developers, EJB developers, application deployers, etc...), what are "best practices" for building a team and ensuring that they communicate well after the design phase? How will the left arm know what the right arm is doing?
    2. What documentation should be produced during the design phase to give to the developers? Will this allow them to go off and develop independently of each other?
    3. Is there a "best practices" document anywhere on J2EE project management?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi,
    I feel any project to start with should have a prior planning,that too particularly for Object oriented programming projects,I feel UML is the best tool for entire process.I think rational software has got lot of Project Management Tools(PMT) and products at all stages.Please go through the rational.com site and hope you could find some info.I feel the answer to your second question is partly 'yes' and partly 'no'.The modules that you can split it up which have got some independent attributes,but it should not be too much in your project,then it affects the work matrix/There should be a optimal process to decide and that you can yourself formulate depending on the time frame,either way the last step of build or integration is not flexible enough that you should mind,modular flexibility can be there but the integration stage you are tied with a fixed process.So plan accordingly using a PMT tool for any project that matters and all the best.Bye

  • Help with JAVA StringObject - & assign user input; StringMethod

    Hi Everyone! I need help with this Java Program, I need to write a program, single class, & file. That will prompt the user to enter a word. The output will be separted by hypens and do this until the user enters exit. I think this is done by using a string variable. Then use the length of the word to setup a loop to print each letter out with hypens. (example c-a-t)
    1. I think I should store the word like this: Word.Method(). Not sure of this the API was confusing for me because I wasn't sure of what to do.
    2. A string method to find out how many letters are in the user's word in order to setup a loop to print each letter out. I think I can use a While loop to accomplish this?
    3. A string method to access each letter in a string object individually in order to print individual letters to the screen with those hypens. This is really confusing for me? Can this be accomplished in the While loop? or do I declare variables in the main method.
    Any examples you can refer me to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Getting user input:
    This may look strange to a newbie but there's nothing much you can do since you wanted a single class file:import java.io.*
    public class InputTest {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
          System.out.println("Hi! Please type a word and press enter.");
          String lineReadFromUser = in.readLine();
          System.out.println("You typed " + lineReadFromUser);
    }You can get the lenght of a String using the length() method. Example: int len = "Foobar".length();
    You can get the individual characters of a String with the charAt() method. Example: char firstCharOfString = string.charAt(0);
    (remember that the argument must be from 0 to length-1)
    You can access the documentation of all classes, including java.lang.String, at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/index.html You can also download the docs.

    I can print fine when I don't try to set the MediaSize to a custom size or when I use already named constants like: "MediaSizeName.JIS_B4"

    The offending line(103) looks like this:

    public  void printDocument()
    try
              System.out.println("input file name is");
         System.out.println(inputFileName);
    PrintRequestAttributeSet pras = new HashPrintRequestAttributeSet();

    job.print(doc, pras);

    catch (Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    }Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to java but I've programmed a bunch in c++.

    Hmm ... no real help, but I found this note in the API:
    MediaSize is not yet used to specify media. Its current role is as a mapping for named
    media (see MediaSizeName). Clients can use the mapping method
    MediaSize.getMediaSizeForName(MediaSizeName) to find the physical dimensions of
    the MediaSizeName instances enumerated in this API. This is useful for clients which
    need this information to format & paginate printing.
