Help with Shared in finder?

i recently bought a macbook pro this friday and its the first mac i have ever owned. before this i have had only PCs. i noticed something on my finder that seemed odd to me. when i click on the "finder" on my dock on the left hand under shared there is a little computer and it says renae next to it. is this normal? what does that mean? when i click on it it says comunication failed. like i said im new to macs and im not sure if thats supposed to be there or not. its only there when i connect to the internet. could someone help me with this please its bugging the heck out of me.heres a picture any help?

It's a device on your network, either a PC or a print server.

• Need help with photoshop to find TGA

Need help with photoshop to find TGA on same as because I cant find it there or is it a download you need to get it. And its for photoshop element 12.

Yeah, I thought it was dumb to remove it, too. See:
Save as TGA File ? [Photoshop Elements 12]
for the workaround.

• Need help with shared hyperlinks

I need help understanding the shared hyperlink option when creating hyperlinks in InDesign CS5 (Mac) and how to change a shared hyperlink destination.
I want to build a document that contains hyperlinks to files on the client’s server. The end use is to make a PDF in which the client can click on a hyperlink and it opens (for example) a Word document or another PDF on their server. When I started the project, I thought I would create shared hyperlinks because a single server document would be referred to by several links scattered through the InDesign document I was building.
From the Hyperlink palette fly-out menu I chose New Hyperlink, then Link To: File from the dropdown, and I clicked the Shared Hyperlink option, and then OK to close the window. I export the InDesign file as a print PDF, and the hyperlinks work.
Now I need to change the file paths, because the client moved their files to a new location. When I re-open the hyperlink in the Hyperlink palette by double clicking on it, the Edit Hyperlink window opens but it shows my link as:
Link To: Shared Destination (rather than File)
And the destination box underneath shows:
Document: [my document name]
Name [the file path I put in]
However, this link is not editable. I don’t understand why InDesign does this on its own.
I realize now that it was not necessary to tick the shared option when I built the hyperlink. Is there a way (a script? another method?) that I can remove the shared nature of the hyperlinks so that when I go to edit them they show as links to files (Link to: File, not Link to: Shared Destination) with a live Destination Path box where I can edit the link?
(If anyone tries to help with a script, note that my document also contains other hyperlinks to internet URLs and emails that I don’t want to disturb.)
Thanks for your consideration.

Well. I do feel sort of bait-and-switched, but...
I want to get the links back to the point where double clicking on the hyperlink name (number) in the Hyperlink palette opens an Edit Hyperlink dialog where the destination is Link to: File and the file path shows up in the File Path box as an editable string. Just the way I made them in the first place.
It's good that you're comfortable editing the IDML.
If you compare links made both ways in the IDML, the only distinction between the Shared and the not Shared seems to be the hidden attribute of the <HyperlinkURLDestination/> tag.
Allegedly you cannot edit this in Javascript (though you could, I suppose, create a new HyperlinkURLDestination with all the same properties and then chang eeach hyperlink to point to it).
But editing it in the IDML works fine. Open designmap.xml and change the Hidden="false" to Hidden="true". Of course, you only want to do that in the <HyerplinkURLDestination/> tags...
Something about this seems fishy to me, so you might want to verify it yourself in a single case before you put too much effort in. But I think it's right.

• Help with Shared Photostream

Hi guys!
I could need some help with the shared Photostream function.
I read the Q&A about it and i'm sure now that my shared Photostream albums wont delete by apple at anytime.
Also i read about the Limits of Upload 1000 an Hour, 10.000 a Day.
My idea is to use the Shared Photostream Album function as an online Backup before selling my old iPhone.
Here is my Problem:
I got a lot of pictures on my Old iPhone, and i experienced a Lot of Memory usage through the new Albums i created so far,
So my Memory space is totally Full... I thought it's mainly online space used?
Next Problem is that the Upload wont work correct. It's only working with a 100-200 pictures After that i Can select other pictures
But These wont upload anymore...
And If i erase my old iPhone the iCloud Shared Photoalbum wont be affected?
Thank you very much for your help!

No, the data is deleted from your device but not from iCloud. The only thing you won't be able to access after signing back in is my photo stream photos older than 30 days (which is why you should save them to your camera roll before deleting the account).
The other thing you might want to review are shared photo stream limits, in case you might have exceeded these: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858. These include a maximum of 5000 photos & videos per shared stream (combined), and 1000 photos & videos per hour (from all contributors).

• Help with shared objects...again...

Okay, I've been looking at a really good tutorial for shared objects in AS2, and I think I've gotten the basic concept down of how they work... now the problem lies in just integrating it into what I already have, which is making my brain hurt. Basically its for a quiz game, which will have a dynamic scoreboard. I want the scores in the shared object to update when the submit button is pressed, and then have the new values loaded into text boxes. Displaying the values is going to be the easy part, its just updating them is what my brain doesnt want to wrap itself around. Here is the array I have at the moment (yes, horribly inefficient, but the last time I actually did any coding before this was over 2 years ago when I was still a computer science major... with all of 4 actual Comp Sci courses under my belt -_-)
scores= new Array();
names= new Array();
insert=function() {
var newscore;
var newname;
newscore=0
newscore=_global.correct;
if (newscore > scores[0]) {
scores[14]=scores[13];
scores[13]=scores[12];
scores[12]=scores[11];
scores[11]=scores[10];
scores[10]=scores[9];
scores[9]=scores[8];
scores[8]=scores[7];
scores[7]=scores[6];
scores[6]=scores[5];
scores[5]=scores[4];
scores[4]=scores[3];
scores[3]=scores[2];
scores[2]=scores[1];
scores[1]=scores[0];
scores[0]=newscore;
names[14]=names[13];
names[13]=names[12];
names[12]=names[11];
names[11]=names[10];
names[10]=names[9];
names[9]=names[8];
names[8]=names[7];
names[7]=names[6];
names[6]=names[5];
names[5]=names[4];
names[4]=names[3];
names[3]=names[2];
names[2]=names[1];
names[1]=names[0];
names[0]=newname;
else if (newscore > scores[1]) {
scores[14]=scores[13];
scores[13]=scores[12];
scores[12]=scores[11];
scores[11]=scores[10];
scores[10]=scores[9];
scores[9]=scores[8];
scores[8]=scores[7];
scores[7]=scores[6];
scores[6]=scores[5];
scores[5]=scores[4];
scores[4]=scores[3];
scores[3]=scores[2];
scores[2]=scores[1];
scores[1]=newscore
names[14]=names[13];
names[13]=names[12];
names[12]=names[11];
names[11]=names[10];
names[10]=names[9];
names[9]=names[8];
names[8]=names[7];
names[7]=names[6];
names[6]=names[5];
names[5]=names[4];
names[4]=names[3];
names[3]=names[2];
names[2]=names[1];
names[1]=newname;
Continues all the way down to scores[14]
Now, if I wanted this to pull data from the shared object, would I just put user_so.score[3]=user_so.score[2] for instance? Or would I run the array and just update the new valued individually once the array insertion function completes? THe problem with the latter is that it's not directly accessing the shared object so I'd need to find a way to pull them out into other variables first, and this is about the point where my brain just decides to short out on me and stop working alltogether...yay...
So yea, any help on this would be much appreciated.
also, would the array have to be declared within the shared object as well? If so, how would I do that exactly? Probably something so simple but the fact that it's shared objects is throwing me off...

Ok, the shared object WAS working just fine until I had the banner start referencing it. Then the quiz began giving me syntax errors like crazy, and even when the banner isnt runnit it gives me issues.

these are the lines it's telling me I need an on handler for, which I do have, at the very start of the entire code.
Ive counted the brackets and those seem to line up, but I'll double check again. The code is on the submit button itself (yes I know it's poor coding form, but this is how I learned it and what I'm used to, and since I'm on a bit of a time schedule now isn't the time to completely re-learn the proper conventions and etiquite of coding in flash).

• Help with sharing files

I have a iMac (very recently) and just got a macbook. I am writing. I want to be able to work on the same thing from either computer. I clicked on sharing in system preferences and clicked file sharing and printer sharing. I read instructions but I must be doing something wrong, that I am not getting my computers to connect. I have internet connections working fine on both. Ethernet for imac and airport for macbook. I thought this was going to be easy. I have been going in circles for hours. (and it is probably very simple.) I also clicked to enable "apple talk" but they aren't speaking yet. How do I make that happen??? And thank you!!
Sandy

Hi Sandy,
glad its working.
I'm not expert at this, but I think there may be a security issue, in that it will be as secure as your wireless network is, and many people leave their wireless networks very unprotected. I don't think it would be straight forward gaining access to what you are doing even then, but probably possible if you know what you are doing. There are lots of things you can do to make your wireless network secure, so if you haven't done those things it would be worth looking on the web or your instruction manual. Primarily you can use encryption (WEP or better, WPA depending on what your modem/router supports) and restrict access to your network by defining which computers are allowed access (by MAC address - in this case MAC has nothing to do with Apple, all computers have a MAC address. On an Apple Mac computer it is easy to find, just click on the blue apple on the top menu bar, then About This Mac, then More info, then Network - locations, then scroll down to what you want. If for a wireless network that would be Airport if I remember rightly).
As I say, I'm not an expert so look for instructions on the Web. I managed it in an hour or so, and feel a lot happier about wireless use now.
Hope this helps,
Bob

• Help with Sharing iPhoto 9.5.1 library between users on same computer

Hi,
I have upgraded operating systems to Maverick on my macbookpro which also upgraded iphoto to 9.5.1. Previously in IPhoto I could choose to share the library in each of three user accounts. The third account was used only for gathering photos to make books, calendars etc. There does not appear to be a way to do this now. How do I share libraries on the same computer without creating a library on a separate device?
So frustrating....I was right in the middle of creating a book.
Thanks for any help.

That particular feature has been discontinued with iPhoto 9.5.1. However, you can use iCloud to share photos via Shared Photo Streams. Each user account will need their own iCloud account and each user can create Shared Photo Streams to be shared with the other accounts. The photos in the SFSs can be downloaded by any account with access to the stream.
Anbother option would be to create a Dropbox account and when the 2 accouts come across photos to be used in a project they can export the original file to the Dropbox in the account so they can be downloaded into the 3rd account and imported into the project library.
If you have an external HD you could put the project library on it and access it from each of the other 2 accounts. Project photos could be added to that library directly by the other 2 accounts by exporting to the desktop and importing into the projects library with an easy library switch. Or one can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy selected albums between libraries.

• HELP with sharing ical in icloud

I desperately need to share the same calendar to two kinds of people. I hace a person who has a .mac account that has to able to edit my calendar. And I have others who don't have a .mac account and need only to see the calendar.
When I go to that particular calendar in ical or in icloud (on the web) and click on the litlle "sync" icon, it gives me a dialog with the name of the person that has the .mac account. However, I can't find a way to share the same calendar but justa as a subscription.
I cannot beleive how difficult Apple has made this for us users.
Thanks

Ok first of all, go in the app store and find a free app that backs up your contacts. The one I used is My Contacts Backup (Globile). Use it to backup your contacts, and email the file to yourself. Now disable Icloud on all the phones. One of your phones can keep using the apple ID you have shared as your icloud ID, the other users will have to create new apple id's to use with icloud and gamecenter. They can still use your apple ID strictly in the app store so that you can share purchases, but that way each of you will have your own sync backup. Once you do that just open the file that you emailed yourself with that contact app, and it will restore your contacts (make sure the app is still on your phone). Make sure the contacts you restored are the ones only you want to use, clean out any that may have synced over earlier from the other users, and then turn on icloud to back them up.

• Help with hugely difficult Finder difficulties?

Okay, I need help, if anyone has it to offer. Here is my computer's history and symptoms:
It's a MacBook, 18 months old, running 10.5.5. For a while it worked fine and there have been no recent significant installations. My wife uses it for writing and while she does connect to the internet, she does almost no downloading or even viewing of any unusual websites.
Recently it began showing the spinning beachball far more often than usual, usually when browsing for a file from inside another application (that is, when attaching a document to an email or opening a document through Word). The beachball would interrupt for about 8-12 seconds, a very annoying difficulty. So far, though, livable.
Last week the computer spontaneously started up to the prohibitary sign. It had not been shut down improperly nor had anyone made any changes to the system software. I tried some things that didn't work, then called tech support (for $50, of course) and they had me delete the user's caches folder in safe mode and restart. This seemed to work, only the beachball problem got worse; it started happening when regularly in the finder: opening folders, clicking on menus, etc. An 8-12 second delay.
Today the prohibitary sign appeared again and I followed the same steps, with mixed results. It is now able to boot up, but has only minimal function. The beachball appears for 8-12 seconds at any click of the mouse, on a menu, a menu item, a folder, a file, etc. The desktop is not right; there is a desktop picture that's supposed to display but instead I see about the top 1/2 inch of that picture, then the rest of the screen is blue. This has happened the same way on multiple restarts. Furthermore, the dock will not show up and if I select "Turn hiding off" in the menu, nothing happens; that is, hiding is still turned on and moving the mouse down there does not work to unhide it. All applications I have tried are slow and prone to crashing.
As an example of its current problems: I tried to look and see what was going on with the desktop, see if I could just tell it to put that picture up again and maybe it would work (a long shot, I know, but why not try?). I went to System Preferences (8-12 second beachball delay) and then Desktop/Screen Savers (another delay). It came up on "screen savers" so I clicked "desktop." This time, 20 second delay, then it crashed, you know, a "do you want to send an error report?" crash. This happened repeated times after repeated restarts.
I know this is an insanely long post but I wanted to give as much info as possible. I am at a loss. Does anybody have any clear idea as to how to diagnose this problem and/or what steps might alleviate it? Much obliged. Thanks in advance!

Hello jupiter:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
Your post was not +"insanely long!"+ I found it most thorough.
You seem to have multiple issues - not just with the browser. I think I would do an archive and install to "eliminate" software as an issue:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
An A&I installs a fresh OS X while preserving your files, programs, and settings. It is ALWAYS a good practice to back up before software changes. You would, of course, need to run software update after the A&I to bring things to a current level.

• Help with Shared Library Errors?

I am getting a Shared Library Error (The application "APP NAME HERE" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "1<APP NAME HERE><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCore>") whenever I try to open a non-Mac application (Adobe or Microsoft, basically). And when I try to print, I cannot adjust anything in the Page Setup, else the application crashes.
Problems began right after a Software Update: to 10.4.8 (and iTunes to 7.0.1).
Any thoughts? I have seen references here and elsewhere to various shared library error issues, with solutions that have worked for some people sometimes, ranging from dowloading the newest version of Quicktime to archiving everything and reinstalling the system software.

I saw you had posted in the other topic and were
advised to start a new one. But did you try any of
the other approaches?
Yes. I've been trying simpler things first, such as removing certain caches from my Library.
It helps to be
more specific about the particular applications.
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and In Design 2.0.2. Microsoft Word 11.0 and Excel 11.0 are the ones that give me the shared library error. At the same time (since the upgrade to OS 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1), I have been having trouble with my printer, a Canon i850 (printer software quits with each printing, although the printer does print the item; and trying to adjust Page Setup causes whatever application I'm in to crash).
Did you look at Yo
u receive a "Shared library" error message when you
start Office for Mac programs for example?
Not until you suggested it. Thanks. It has some of the same suggestions, though — no new ones. I've been trying to avoid the archive/install option, but I guess I'm headed that way.
You say you have iTunes 7.0.1, what version of
Quicktime do you have?
QuickTime Player 7.1.3.
Unfortunately there doesn't (as yet) seem to be a
single fix for all these errors. We'll just have to
keep trying!
That's the sense I'm getting.
Thank you for your attemps to help.

• Help with Sharing Screen Many Miles Away

Hi,
To give a background. My Dad is disabled and struggles to use his computer sometimes. He has a 2008 iMac running 10.5 and I live in Australia. I am wondering is there anyway that when his computer plays up and needs a setting fixing that I can control from across here to do the job.
I am on an iMac across here on 10.6.7 any help that could help our situation would be grateful.
Olly

As mentioned, there is iChat screen sharing. You can use MobileMe accounts, OR you can use free AOL Instant Messenger accounts <http://aim.com>. You do not need the AIM software, just the accounts. I think you might even be able to use a Google gTalk account. To make it easy you setup the accounts for you Father, and then talk him through adding the account to iChat.
You could get a MobileMe subscription for yourself, then register both your Father's and your Mac(s) to your account, then you can use Back-to-My-Mac which will allow regular Mac OS X Screen Sharing and File Sharing over an encrypted connection.
You can also try TeamViewer.com. It works very well.
There is also LogMeIn.com.
LogMeIn.com has the advantage that once the server is installed on your Father's Mac, it runs in the background and you can connect without needing him to be there. TeamViewer.com is just another running app, and as such he might not always run it, or might quit from it.
On the other hand, TeamViewer.com allows file transfer, but LogMeIn.com requires an upgrade to the paid version to get file transfer. You could always use DropBox.com for any files you want to transfer. By the way, iChat does allow transferring files as well.
You could setup a Hamachi (VPN)
<http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/36286/logmein-hamachi>
network between you and your Father. Once that is in place, you could use normal Mac OS X Screen Sharing and File Sharing services over an encrypted virtual private network.
And then there is the hard way Configuring your Father's home router to port forward ports 5900 and port 548 <http://portforward.com>, getting a free dynamic DNS name from No-IP.com or DynDNS.org, running the dynamic DNS name updating utility on your Father's Mac (all the time), then connecting directly with Mac OS X Screen Sharing and File Sharing. NOTE: The Screen Sharing client does have preferences to encrypt all network traffic, and is a good idea when going across the internet, HOWEVER, File Sharing does not. If you want secure file sharing in this configuration, you would need to play other more complex games involving ssh tunnels. I listed this last as it is only a good idea if you are network savvy and familiar with ssh, otherwise I would suggest one of the more user friendly methods mentioned above.

• Help with sharing/networking an encrypted sparseimage on a LAN

I have 4 macs on an ethernet/Airport LAN, one running Lion and 3 running 10.6.8. I have an encrypted sparseimage in a 10.6.8 MBPro which I want the other computers to open and access over the LAN. When the image is mounted on one computer the others will get a message that it cannot be shared now. If I dismount it I can open it on a remote computer. I can see it on only 1 computer at a time. I have marked the mounted image and marked it shared and have even tried changing permissions for everyone to read and write.
I had this image on a machine running Tiger and did not have this problem. The mounted birtual drive could be mounted on all the computers at the same time.
The actual file exists on a User who is not an admin. I have tried putting the sparseimage in her public folder and in the Users/Shared folder without help.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA,
Bill

I have 2 iPads, and instead of using only one Apple ID, we set up each iPad with its own ID, and have purchased the same apps for both iPads. Is there a way to share apps from both iPads,
No - not now. You set them up with different Apple ID's. If you had set them up with the same Apple ID from the start - you could share all of the purchased apps across as many iPads as you like. The apps purchase are tied to that Apple ID and iTunes account. So if you buy App "A" for one iPad - you can't share it twith the second iPad because that iPad is linked to a different Apple ID.
can I set up one Apple ID and use both iPads for that Apple ID? If I do set up an Apple ID for both iPads to share, will I lose all the apps on both computers, or is there someway to save apps from both iPads and then download them later?
Yes you can set up one ID and use it on both. Yes you will lose the apps from if you create a third ID.

• Help with Shared Libraries?

I don't have a "Look for Shared Libraries" under Preferences > Sharing (which the other two computers in my home do have), all I have is the "Shared Libraries" under Preferences > General > Sources (which this is checked). I have uninstalled iTunes and then installed it again, this did not work. The other two computers in my home are running off of Windows XP, but the trouble computer is running off of Windows Vista. Not sure if this could be the problem. Please help.

krysto wrote:Yes, I have used pacman before to install software, but what if I want to contribute to the development of a project?
Usually when you are developing software you don't install the package every time you compile it. You just make sure that you can run it from the location where you compiled it. That way you can keep the latest stable version that you can use for leisure time and the development version for testing. Also for contributing to a project you should directly interact with the project's repository (svn, git, ...). So I refer back to my first post here where the PKGBUILD can give you an idea how to go about compiling the source code yourself.
Just don't run "make install" because that will leave your system in a messy state, a simple "make" (with the proper configuration) should result in a locally build binary that you can run from where it was compiled.

• Need some help with sharing files from a Mac G3 to a Mac G4

I've read through some of the forum comments here and checked with help, but still have a great deal of trouble understanding how to share files between two computers, especially when one has OSX 10.3.9 and the other has 9.2.2. I have these two computers connected with a router, but just can't seem to pass files from my G3 to my G4. All of the instructions I read are very confusing- subnet mask, IP address etc. Is there an area I can go to to get a better understanding? It seems like this shouldn't be very difficult. Is there an inherent problem because of the different systems? Thanks for any help I can get.
Dick Skover

I printed the article from Francine, and followed all of the steps and it just doesn't work. Actually, one of the first steps is to go to AppleTalk under the control panels and select "Connect via Ethernet" which I did, but got a "no zones available in that box and no options shown in that box. Is there a problem with the fact that I am connected through a router? Should I have a direct connection between computers without the router?
I'm also reading the files sharing section of David Pogue's book on OSX The Missing Manual, but still can't get a handle on it. Any further help would be appreciated.
