Successful update on a 3G--here's what I did

I read a lot of threads here before deciding to take the plunge to update my 3G to OS4. I was able to update successfully thanks to the things I learned here, so I thought my experience might be helpful to someone else.
Here's what I did:
1. Installed the newest version of itunes.
2. When itunes asked me to download/install OS4, I chose download only.
3. While it was downloading, I asked it to transfer purchases from my phone to itunes. I copied all pictures to my computer and copied the itunes music folder to an external hard drive. And this became important later---in the itunes folder, there's a folder called Mobile Applications. I copied this to my desktop.
4. I synced my phone so there would be a new backup.
5. After some trial and error with the "update" button, I decided to go the "restore" route. I clicked on "restore" while holding down Shift, and it opened a folder for me to find the file I wanted to use. Vista puts the iphone update file in computer name/appdata/roaming/apple computer/itunes/iphone software updates. I clicked on the OS4 update.
6. It restored the phone as a new phone, which was pretty fast. Then it asked me if I wanted to sync using a previous backup, so I selected the backup I had done right before restoring. It put all my data and settings back during this process (about 20-30 minutes) but did not return my apps or music.
7. Once it finished restoring from the backup, I synced again and it put some of my apps and all of my music back on. A few of the apps wouldn't sync, so I went back into the Apps part of itunes (not the one within the phone, but in the itunes library) and saw that there were exclamation marks next to some of the apps. When I clicked on one, it asked me if I wanted to find the file. I found the copies I'd put on the desktop and clicked it, and it asked me if I wanted to do the same thing for all the apps whose files were missing. It restored all of them that way, and I was able to sync again and put them on the phone. Then I rebooted the phone, and that was that.
All said and done, it took <3 hours. When I'd tried going the "update" route a week or so earlier, after three hours the "backing up" progress bar had moved only microscopically. So this was, by far, preferable.
My phone is fast--no problems with lagging or slowness that I've noticed. I love the folders--I went from 7 pages of apps to three. The consolidated email is handy, and the ipod app now lets you edit playlists from within the phone. My only complaint is battery performance--I hadn't been impressed with the 3G battery to begin with, and now I think it's been reduced even further. But I didn't have any of the problems I'd been reading about here for the last few weeks.
I think Apple should do a better job of giving update instructions (not just "click update now") for older phones, rather than leaving it to user trial and error. But thanks to others' experience, my update was successful and I hope in turn to help someone else.

I will post here, since this is a hot topic and I know people want help on this....I was successful with upgrading my 3G to 4.0 the first time out, got lucky I guess. I followed what was supposed to be the standard protocol and it took around 2 hours to complete without a hitch. However, I still noticed a significant lag in performance on opening most apps, iTunes, etc. I decided it was wasn't worth the few added features and after I was forced to downgrade my wife's 3G ( a brand new replacement phone one week old, since her camera had gone bad under the extended warranty - her's was crashing and hanging right and left after the 4.0 upgrade) I downgraded mine as well, and appreciate getting all the speed back. I did try the hard reset a few times, which did seem to help, but the speed is significantly better under the old 3.1.3 system from my experience.
I did lose my text messaging history, as well as pics and phone messages, but had the pics backed up, could call to listen to my stored messages and have a me.com subscription for syncing email, etc. so in the end all I lost was my SMS history, along with setups for passwords, networking, etc.
I will probably buy the new phone in a couple of months after it's stable, but I personally don't think the upgrade is worth the performance lag on a 3G. Who wants to stand around (or take your eyes off the road!) while waiting for a screen to load, so you can check messages, answer a call, etc.) Yes, I use a headset while driving, but still take calls when the road is clear, but the lag time was frustrating. Kind of like working on a Mac 20 years ago and waiting, waiting, waiting.....
The sequence for downgrading mentioned elsewhere in these threads worked for me with the option key selection on the restore button, and the use of the 3rd party software (rec? something? sorry) to force quit the phone at the end of the restore. It's been posted several times. Sorry to hijack this post in a way, but you should know that, yes, the upgrade can be performed successfully, and it may not be worth the loss of performance, and, yes, you can successfully downgrade, but you will lose some personal info.

Buttons not responding? Here is what I did.

Okay, so your shiney new iPod Nano's buttons stop doing anything and even the cick-wheel gives up on you what do you do? This is what I did:

1st Result) Not much... all they had on there was the standard, '...Is the hold switch toggeled?..'
2A) Did a little digging online to see if I'm the only one having this problem.)
2R) Found out (by looking at this site alone) I'm not.
3A) Actually 'Restored' my iPod... Not sure if this particular action had anything to do with it working again and I'm interested if this actually has any effect on the process as a whole.
3R) It did what it was supposed to. Wiped that puppy clean, but the buttons still won't work.
4A) Realized that most of the 'suggestions' I was receiving called for workng buttons to achieve the maximum effect... 4R) Uh HELLO they don't work that's why I'm here!!!
--- THE GOOD PART ---
After giving up all hope I come across this peiece of information that goes on to say that the 'Hold Switch' being toggeled on and off actually re-calibrates the buttons and click-wheel, and that if you are touching the click-wheel (even slightly) it could cause all buttons to not respond. AND (this is the part that noone else ever said) the best way to try and get the buttons to work again is to lay on a flat surface (table, desk, etc.) and then flip the 'Hold Switch.' If that doesn't work leave it lying there 'un-held' and press the 'Select Button' a few times. This is supposeed to re-align, re-calibrate the buttons all the way, not just the way the iPod reads the info they input.

Dropped to toilet, here's what i did...

well, i dropped my 5C to the toilet, i just took it out of water immediately, when it got out, the screen was flashing and the touch not responding, so, what i did is...
     - took the SIM Card Out.
     - Put it on a rice pot for at least 10 hours
     - took out the phone of the rice, then the first thing i could notice is that the de screen wont turn on, so when i was checking on that, the phone started to ring... so i swipe my finger where the "Slide to Answer" is supposed to be and i answered the call, and was working fine... i finally could turn off the phone.
     - after that i dissasembled the iphone and notice that there was a lot of water inside yet so i took a napkin and dry a little bit the phone.
     - i will leave it under a warm light and hope when i rearm the phone hopefully everything works good.
Did you guys, know another thing can i try??? any ideas?? or any comment???

Successful update of 3G to iOS4 - here's what I did

Hi All,
After having problems on my own trying to update my 3G to iOS4, after a quick call to Apple phone support (whom I find amazing, btw), everything got sorted out and I had a completely successful, smooth update.
The good news first: my 3G is actually zippier! Hard to know what to attribute this to, but part of it may have been the way I updated (see below). In any event, my 3G operates more smoothly, Safari works great, no apps crashing, all my data was restored, email works great, iPod works great, got the folders all arranged quickly via iTunes 9.2, etc.
The tips:
1. I was having an "error -5000" during my attempt to initiate a backup by using the Update button in iTunes. If you research this, it appears to be some sort of privileges issue, but in fact it occurred after waiting 5 hours for the backup to complete, something had hung it up -- I suspect something on my PC (Windows XP SP3, which I defrag frequently, have Norton AV on (latest version), and keep running clean). Hence the call to Apple, couldn't figure out how to get past it.
2. Here's the sequence the person on the phone gave me: a) restart your computer -- this makes sure there's nothing running in the background, your USB ports are reset, etc. -- it's a crucial first step. b) plug your iPhone into a different USB port (this eliminates the possibility the USB port you were using might be defective, or slow, for some reason). c) MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE A BACKUP OF YOUR PHONE using the normal Sync/Backup process before doing anything related to updating. Check under Edit/Preferences/Devices to make sure you have a good backup before proceeding further. NOTE: I would add to this: _temporarily disable your antivirus/firewall program,_ if you can do so safely, to make sure there are no complications in iTunes communicating with the Apple servers, to verify the new OS file, re-activate your phone, etc. -- anything that gets in the way of that communications process that you have running on your computer is a risk. Also, if you have any programs like a screensaver that might pop up in the middle of all this, disable those, too.
3. Ok so here was the difference in approach: rather than hit Update, I hit Restore. I got an option to Update and Restore, which I accepted. What this does is re-format your phone, set it back to factory settings, wipe all data, and install iOS4 to, essentially, a clean environment. The key thing here is to WAIT through the whole cycle, don't unplug anything, do email, run any programs while waiting, touch your iPhone, etc. Your phone will reboot itself a couple of times to get to the point where this update is finished. Upon completion of this step, you have the equivalent of a factory-restored 3G with iOS4 on it, nothing else.
4. Then you get the choice to Restore as New, or Restore from Backup. KEY HERE: do NOT Restore as New. As the documentation for this process indicates (and has since iTunes 7), if you Restore as New, it WIPES OUT your backup. You will end up with a "new" 3G with iOS4. So be sure to _Restore from Backup_, which should be the backup you made prior to starting this whole process.
5. This is the long part. Hope you have a good, reliable, defragmented hard drive, and computer, that will do the restore cleanly. Again, no using the computer for anything else while this is going on! Restore from Backup will pull all your information -- notes, contacts, email, settings, app data, etc. -- back onto your iPhone.
6. This is the less long, but still long part. After your data and info has been restored on top of the new iOS4 on your 3G, iTunes 9.2 (you are using 9.2, I hope?!), all your apps and music from iTunes will be reinstalled on the iPhone. Again, let this process complete without fiddling around with iTunes or anything else on your computer.
7. Voila! 3G with iOS4. To be safe, go through another sync and backup cycle with your "new" 3G on iTunes, to make sure you have a good backup of your new system with iOS4 running, before you do anything else.
8. After everything's sync'd, running, NOW you can start doing things like rearranging apps into folders (easier to do in iTunes, on the Apps tab, than on your iPhone itself).
9. Also to be safe, go through all your settings, starting with the General Settings page, and make sure they're what you want.
I've been at this awhile today, as you might imagine, but one thing I'll mention in addition is that my battery, if anything, is lasting LONGER than it was prior to going through the above process. I suspect doing a full firmware wipe and reinstall also, along the way, reset my battery indicator, too.
I'm very relieved my 3G's updated to iOS4 so smoothly, and I'm amazed, despite all the reports here, at how fast it is! I hope you have as much success with the update as I did. Chances are very good if you've had your 3G (or 3GS) for awhile, there are mysteries that doing a full restore and then update after that will clear, so it's well worth going this way. I will rely more upon the Restore option in the future, if my iPhone starts getting wonky, now that I understand how it works.

I had no problems upgrading my 3G iPhone last night. I did not follow the initial prompt to upgrade, but first allowed it to run through it's normal backup/sync process. Then I clicked the Update button within iTunes. So far the phone responds much faster than before. I don't know what was going on with my phone before but it was dragging with the old os and I was having to do hard resets at least 5 times a week.
After upgrading the only problem I saw this morning was that Mail on the phone downloaded every single email as if they had never been read. Not an issue except that the app crashed once in the process of downloading. Then this afternoon I noticed that the screen is very touch sensitive, much more so than before and I even have a screen protector applied which normally makes it less touch sensitive. Several times today during calls it would suddenly switch to speaker mode. Is it possible that holding to my ear caused the mode to change? It was never so touch sensitive before but I read another post from someone with an iPhone 4 with the same complaint. I also had several dropped calls with someone this evening but it may have been something on their end, it's hard to tell... My phone was on my wifi at the time and had full bars.

I fixed my battery problem!! Here is what I did...........

Ok I tried everything from turning off wifi to turning off my phone so it can recharge over night. Well last night I left my phone charging with wifi off and the battery drained. I woke up today to find out that my phone did charge all the way with the glowing battery. The battery stood still close to the very end.
So I hooked it up to my PC and it stated it was charging but it wasn’t charging. It did state the bolt in the battery icon. So then I unplugged my my iphone and connected it to the wall charger, guess what the phone did not charge at all!! No icon was coming up and I started to get frustrated. So I went back to my computer and connected it with the USB.
This is when I fixed it. I restored my phone through Itunes and then I synced all my downloads. Now its working, I have a glowing battery and it states usage.

I posted this on several other threads about this .. there are about 1,000. I got a replacement phone from Apple because of this issue. The replacement phone .. has the same issue. It never gets the green glowing battery and never shows use stats after full charge, even tho the top right battery icon does go to the "plug" graphic instead of the "bolt" graphic.
I have tried resetting, restarting, reloading the iPhone, i have deleted content twice. I have drained it dead and charged it full (it took over 9 hrs to get it to 95% after doing that, and another 2 hours to get that last 5% .. which i think is obscenely off). I had it plugged into the wall, my macbook, and some of both.
I logged yet another case with apple (800-my-iphone) and figure they'll just send me another and another til one finally works.

Problem installing QT resolved..here's what I did.

I have had trouble trying to install the new version of QT. Without it Itunes won't open, and I can't update my music on my IPOD. I have had both error-3 and error-1637. I am running Windows XP:
1) Uninstall QuickTime from the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
2) Clean registry issues with http://www.ccleaner.com/ (freeware). Once installed just click on Applications and put a check mark next to Quick time.
3) Restart windows.
4) Turn off any anti-virus programs that are running.
5) Delete the Quick Time folder, In C:|Program Files
6) Reinstall QT from the standalone installer

I had similar issue after upgrading to 10.5.4 It seems something happened with 10.5.3 and from then on the wireless problems persist. My problem specifically happened when I get far away from my access point. I normally sit at a place in the house where my singnal is only about 20%. I have been fine for a year with several different laptops, but the 10.5.4 did not work at all. Packets were lost all the time to a point where my MBP was trying to reconnect too often t make the system usable.
Anyway, replacing the IO80211Family.kext file with the one from 10.5.2 did the trick. The sysem is running fine now for months.
Google IO80211Family.kext to find instruction on how to do this.

Are you having problems syncing with Pocketmac, Missing Sync or Media Sync? Here's what I did...

Just throwing this out there as a solution that worked for my situation. It may not work for everyone's needs.
After NUMEROUS emails back and forth with Pocketmac support I was finally told that Pocketmac will not work if Media Sync is also installed. It causes the "Error 1 Skipping" problem due to a USB driver conflict. So I tried Missing Sync's free trial. No good. It would not sync either, so paying money for the non trial version wasn't going to happen.
So, I ended up keeping Media Sync to keep my iTunes library synced and I started to use a wonderful little free app called "Google Sync". It works beautifully for my needs. It runs in the background (with no negative effect to the BB's performance or battery life) and automatically syncs your gmail contacts and google calendar to your BB device. If you change something on either the BB itself or online, google sync catches it and updates the other accordingly.
So if your sick and tired of messing around with Pocketmac and Missing Sync, give Google Sync a try. I love it!

It turns out that 8X DVD burning means about 47X CD burning - you were requesting 8X DVD but only got 4X DVD burning.
I haven't seen it discussed anymore so maybe Apple got around to eliminating that 'quirk' in terminology.
I suspect some of the early 8x DVD burners didn't perform as advertised. I'm glad your new 16X burner is working for you.

My DVD burning problems solved....here's what I did.

Like some of you, I was having MAJOR problems burning DVDs. My initial setup was a dual 2.0 ghz G5 purchased in July of last year, so it came with a 8x burner and iLife '04 (iMovie 4.0.1 and iDVD 4.0.1). Seeing as how I have 1.5gigs RAM and a fairly new system running 10.4.3, I didn't think I was going to have any problems burning DVDs....

Nothing worked right......a 1-hour long project burned for more than 8 hours without finishing, or iDVD would quit for no reason, or the burn would fail. I noticed that Terminal said that during these burns it was only burning at 4x even though 47x was requested. Chapters were not working. Applecare was not helpful, only suggesting that I try to burn under a new user, and then call them back. That didn't work either.
I probably took the lazy man's way out, but I decided this waste of time was unacceptable. I went out and purchased a 16x SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-110D replacement from MCE for $92, and upgraded to iLife '05 for another $79. I installed the drive myself (VERY easy with the included instructions), and tried the new setup under a newly created user.....
PERFECT burning every time. Not only that, but Terminal showed a requested burn speed of 16x and a burn speed of 16x. A two-hour project is now burning in less than 8 minutes. Multiplexing still takes time, but it's less than 1 hour!
On an interesting side note: when I try to burn under my regular user name, I STILL get an burning error (says image not complete, or incomplete....something like that). But under the user name created just for burning I have no problems. The chapter problem was solved when I stopped putting a chapter marker at the very beginning of my iMovie projects, since iDVD automatically puts one in called "Beginning," which you can change to anything you want.

ok. this is a constant problem with newbies. i'm not picking on you but if you don't know how to figure out class paths then you have a fundamental lack of understanding of java. understanding class paths are at the core of the java language and using an IDE that supposedly controls this for you is not helping your situation. my suggestion to you is to use a text editor and the command prompt to create and run your java programs. you won't believe how much more you understand after fooling around with java this way for a few months.

For starters, you don't download the support software/drivers. They are on your OSx installation disk.
You also do not provide any information about your computer, especially the year. The newer computers do not support XP. There are no XP drivers for the newer computer hardware.

Updated to iOS 4.2.1-Here's How I did It

I updated from 4.01 to the latest in about 8 minutes after I downloaded the update. Here is what I did...First I download the latest iTunes. Installed it over the previous version and downloaded (only) the update in iTunes and saved it. It took about 20 minutes for it to finish downloading.
1. Then before you do anything else, Backup/Sync your phone and save it. Go to C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup and copy it for safe keeping if you are using Windows 7. This will be you backup before the update.
2. Close down all of your open apps in the taskbar of your iPhone.
3. Shut down your phone completely.
4. Plug your phone into your sync cable, load iTunes, and hit update. The downloaded update will do its thing. This procedure worked for me and I think possibly eliminated any upgrade problems that I was worried about.
My folders were fine, proximity sensor is the same as before (no problems) and now I got the cool updates. Find My Phone worked fine too.
Hope this helps the holdouts. I had 4.01 for pete's sake and took the plunge. So far so good.

Alright I have windows 7 and I tried downloading the new iPhone software at least 8 times now and each time the download completes, but then promps me that the connection has timed out. I am certain that it is not my internet connection because I have used several different networks. I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to change my internet options if that is the problem. I turned off all of my firewalls since I could not find a way to allow itunes to pass through the firewall even though it seems to be allowed. Thanks to anyone that can help.

My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.
Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again.You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Tour got wet - here's what it does - how can I tell if it is "fried"?

My Blackberry Tour (from 2009 - Blackberry device manager says I am running BB OS 4.7.1) got wet in a rainstorm (phone was outside, not submerged, the wetness indicator strip on the battery has not had a line appear on it but a tab inside the phone is all red) approx. 5 days ago - I did some of what I should have done and some of what I probably should not have done as far as patience, lack of patience, letting it dry (in gentle heat (no hair dryer, etc. or rice), giving it a try... Here's what it does - my main questions are - do I have any hope of rescuing my contacts data - unfortunately, never backed-up? If so, how?:
- Without the Battery in: Connected by USB cable to my laptop (plugged-in, USBs powered) (Windows 7; Blackberry Desktop version 5 (installed from the CD that came with the phone)) finds the phone in Windows device manager (Blackberry Smartphone connected via USB), as above, Blackberry device manager shows status as connected, can identify the phone's PIN, Blackberry Desktop Manager can see that the phone is connected (can see it's PIN) but shows that the device is in Disconnected State, the screen on the phone shows the battery with red X through it.
With a Battery In:
- the battery with red X goes away,
typically starts with a red indicator light, then changes to black screen with hour glass,
- then to black screen with "BlackBerry" and progress bar (showing boot progress?).
- Boot progress bar completes,
- the screen shows the Verizon logo, then
- I get a flash (sometimes longer than others) of my desktop picture (it's one of the pre-loaded ones that is not on the micro-SD card, which I have removed).
- At this point there is a new progress bar which indicates that the phone is checking security settings (I cannot remember verbatim what it says, but it typically completes and, since I probably shouldn't be powering it on, I will not do that to get an exact quote; suffice to say, that usually completes).
- In terms of the desktop, I can also see that, in addition to my selected picture being there , the phone remembers my alarm time at 6:40AM).
- A couple of times when I restarted it, I held down the escape/back button during the boot and launched the phone in safe mode ("safe mode" appeared at the top of the screen - a dialog appeared that explained safe mode and allowed me to click "ok" that I accepted that I knew what safe mode was.
- Whether in safe mode or not, it usually at this point returned to the initial power-up sequence, in a loop, between the red indicator light and the hourglass animation - it does not return to the screen with the "BlackBerry" logo with progress bar, just the aforementioned loop.
At this point, I have tried two batteries - both Blackberry OEM, but with known/potential issues: 1.) the battery that was in the phone at the time it got wet - is approx. a year old (in terms of use), but was holding a reliable charge for 3-4 hours of talk time and
2.) an older battery which may have been the one that was replaced by battery 1 or may be older - it almost certainly had diminshed charge holding capacity and had started the bulge that lithium batteries develop as the near death. These batteries were not obtaining much, if any, in the way of charge while in the phone plugged in, but did, outwardly (light changed from orange to green on a Blackberry OEM charger form the D-X1 battery; have not done a test with a circuit tester, etc.), accept a charge via the outside the phone method. When using the inside the phone method - prior to any outside charging - during the boot-up process, at the point at which I could see my desktop, the indicator light flashed with the orange light and/or the indicator that one typically gets when the battery is lacking needs a re-charge).
I have received and I am currently charging a new D-X1 Blackberry OEM battery, via the aforementioned Blackberry OEM outside the phone charger, for a go-around with the closest thing that I can get to a no problems battery.
OK, I am an **bleep**: I tried to re-boot the phone right away, I wasn't doing a back-up (though I thought that it was 1.) the reason that I was buying a Blackberry with an SD card - that this information was going to be portable and 2.) that I thought that the tech from Verizon, way back when I bought it, set the phone up to store the information on the SD card (no such luck, not there) or the SIM card - how could I test that? (which is, perhaps, why I thought that a backup was taking place). Anyway, as you can tell, I have tried to be as descriptive as possible herein to say what I am seeing, because there are a number of other people with similar problems posting in various places, but, not really the same problems (they are getting stuck on a white screen, not getting all the way through the boot that I describe, had a phone in the pool all day, don't care about the data, just trying to save the phone (I was lax about an upgrade, because I liked my phone and I had a decent outlay of cash in the phone to start-off - was pushing to make it to this fall, hopefully not much longer, to get the newer Blackberry Classic coming out... hopefully with my contact listing being ported over). That said, I have found plenty of evidence that suggests saving the phone is a real possibility, but the data may be more of a challenge.
Huge post, looking for thoughts - thanks for any consideration given to my problems.

if booted up with out all the way dry you might have fried it
put it in a bag of rice for a few days in a nice warm spot 90-100 F
then try it again if it still does the same thing then its toast
