Hex to Float
I am receiving an 8 character hex string over a socket from an Intel/Windows/Microsoft C++ application. The 8 hex characters represent the binary of a float value on the machine sending to me. How do I convert from a String of 8 hex characters to a Java float or double?
One possibility is to use JNI on my side, but I am interested in a "pure Java" solution.

They are hex. When I read them from the socket I convert them to a String. Examples: "3FAEFEC3" "3FABD794" "3FA5387D" "3FA26206" "3F9F8B8E". It appears that I can convert some of these hex numbers. But when I get the hex representation of a negative number I get the following error.
Java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "BD359DDA"
at java.lang.NumberFormatException.forInputString(NumberFormatException.java:48)
at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:438)
I am using the following code to convert:
int bits = Integer.parseInt( getNextToken( ), 16 ) ;
float f = Float.intBitsToFloat( bits ) ;

I have a requirement to convert IEEE ascii hex to float value.
Following code is working for +ve float value but it didn't work for -ve.

for example "BE4CE1E6" should return -0.20 . (i verified in http://babbage.cs.qc.edu/IEEE-754/32bit.html )
For the above string I am getting number format exception.
pls help me.The problem is the parseInt method. It can only process numbers up to 2147483647 or 7FFFFFFF. Because that method expects a signed number.
The solution is to use Long.parseLong() instead.

float floatVal= 0.0f;
int decimalValue =(int)Long.parseLong(str,16);
floatVal=Float.intBitsToFloat(decimalValue );
return floatVal;

I have to convert a bit Hex string into a float. I built a vi from the following C code, but it only works on positive numbers. Any suggestions?
sample16 = (short) ((MSB << 8) | LSB);
sample = (float)sample16/32768.0;
sample*=10.0;

You are not giving us any useful information. Look up the manual of your device. Somewhere in there should be a definition of how the numbers are built up.

around it sometimes by simply restricting precision to 0. If it is
about being able to show numbers both in HEX and floating point then I
do agree that your solution would be the most appropriate one although
I have to admit that I struggle to come up with a situation where a
number can be both something that is meaningfully presented as HEX as
well as a floating point number.

Conversion of a float to IEEE 754 hexa (and vice versa)
Hello everyone,
I need to convert a float into an hexadecimal value to transmit it on a communication bus (I also have to decode the hexa into a float). I need this hexadecimal to respect the IEEE 754 technical standart. I'm trying to do it with the basic functions of Labview but I'm facing some problems. You'll find attached my VI.
If someone has already done such a function or know an easier way to do it, I'll be very grateful.

How are you converting to a Single from the Doubles? In my quick experiment, I got the right answer.

Convertion Hex String to 32bits Decimal floating point??
Hi,
I would like to know how to convert hexa like: 416b0ac3 in decimal 32bits floating-point. The result of this string is suppose to be 14.690127.
So i must be able to do:

I'm reading data from an instrument that
sends the data in Hex (ASCII String)
and I need to convert the data to Float.
All labview Vi:s converts to integers and spoils all my attempts.
Anyone have an idea?
Example (Motorola format)

Convert Floating Point Decimal to Hex
In my application I make some calculations using floating point format DBL,and need to write these values to a file in IEEE 754 Floating Point Hex format. Is there any way to do this using LabVIEW?

Good news. LabVIEW has a function that does exactly what you want. It is well hidden though...
In the Advanced/Data manipulation palette there is a function called Flatten to String. If you feed this funtion with your DBL precision digital value you get the IEEE-754 hexadecimal floating point representation (64 bit) at the data string terminal (as a text string).
I attached a simple example that shows how it works.

Application A has a data type NUMBER and B has a data type BLOB. The data types cannot be changed since we don't have the source codes for both applications.
The data stored in application A is a float of negative value (--1.7029176). I need to convert it to hex (BFD9F934) and store it in application B to be able to use it.

As you have said that ABAP supports automatic type conversion for all the fields with the exception that you can't assign type t to type d and vice versa.
I feel whatever you are getting is the correct value after automatic type coversion.
Try to use correct data types wherever possible.SAP is also recommending this.

Performance and Resolution of AVCHD on hex core PC
If you can help with an unrelated issue, since Adobe 'Contact Us' notes that I should try the Forum because of a lengthy backup:
I have a login problem on my hex core that was not used to download Production Premium CS6. I use my quad core backup PC for emails and downloaded the program to it because the hex core, dedicated to editing and rendering, was unable to login to download CS6 for some reason. After downloading to the quad core, I transferred the CS6 executable and associated software to the hex core. The hex core is now running PP CS6 but is still not able to login to the forum so I am using my quad core for this. Can the hex core login problem be fixed?
Back to AVCHD:
After reading PP CS6 problems in the forum with playback on the time line dated back to 2012 I note I have a similar problem with my recent purchase of CS6 but so far only in one spot. The play during a 1 hour 45 minute sequence of 544 AVCHD MTS clips on my hex core PC with SSD and 2 RAID drives starts OK but the program sequence window freezes after several clips in this one location even though the timeline pointer continues. The color of the line above the timeline is mostly yellow with small bits of red above the short Transition fades. Green as I understand would be better since this indicates that the program usually has little problem playing the source footage. That said, I am pleased that the transitions were added automatically since I spent more time in CS5 adding them than I would removing a few I would not want.
I selected the highest PS resolution for my Sony NEX-VG30 with the idea that I can always resolve down but not up.
The AVCHD properties I have imported into PP CS6 and transferred to the timeline with 'Automate to Sequence' from an MTS clip is as follows:

Yellow is correct for many types of video media. Its only red that needs rendering and it turns green to indicate the media has been rendered. -
Floating point format conversions

I have a binary file that has 8 byte floats in it written in VAX D floating point format. It also has 4 byte integers in it. I have to read this file on a Sun Sparc. To get the correct value of the integers I just swap the bytes around and write out the int value, so bytes 0123 get rearranged to be 3210 and then I use that as my int. I tried that with the doubles, reorder bytes 01234567 to 76543210 and then write out the double value but I don't get the value that was stored.
I read 8 bytes from the file, I'm supposed to get 512.0 but I get garbage.
The hex dump of the file shows: 0045 0000 0000 0000
I can't come up with a way to turn that into 512.0
Another one is 360448.0 with hex dump: b049 0000 0000 0000
Can anyone show me how to manipulate these bits/bytes to get the correct values?

has a C implementation of exactly what I need and has saved me a lot of time and work. Translation to Java will have to use bit shifting I think, the C unions make for a nice implementation.
I also have to read PC and Cray generated files on my Sun.
I have found that, like the Vax, Intel x86 including pentium are all little endian and use IEEE so I'm guessing that I just have to do the byte swapping to translate from PC to Sun.
Crays are Big endian so I don't need byte swapping but I do need to do some manipulation of the exponent and the mantissa.
Do you know where I might find code that others have done for PC to Sun and Cray to Sun conversions of integers, floats and doubles?
BTW, for those who may read this later, the solution in vax2sun.c isn't quite right, the author forgot to use the least significant 32 bits and lost 3 bits in the middle but it is very close. To make it closer you have to change the vax2sun.c code a little.

In the code replace d.mantissa = v.mantissa/8 with:

My few tests showed this gave very good results. The lost_bits are lost because ieee needs 3 more bits for its exponent so it doesn't have room for all of the vax mantissa bits. A little bigger range means a little less precision. -

I'm not an expert on encoding, but when you look on your examples:
A)Difference between the values for dates within the same month equals the number of days between corresponding dates (in both cases)
16-10-2006 - 13-10-2006 = 3 days
131467792 - 131467789 = 3
B)But the same is NOT true for dates in different months.
14-11-2006 - 16-10-2006 = 29 days
131468046 - 131467792 = 254
To find the encoding of months, I would need a pair of datums with the same day and year, but different months. There is none in your example, but if A) is a valid assumption, than:
valueFor(14-10-2006)=valueFor(13-10-2006)+1 = 131467789 + 1=131467790
Then:
valueFor(14-11-2006) - valueFor(14-10-2006)= 131468046 - 131467790 = 256
A magical hexadecimal number, isn't it?
So I tried converting your numbers into hexadecimal:
valueFor(14-11-2006) = 131468046 = 7D60B0E HEX
Now it's easy. Go from the end backwards and convert the bytes back to decimal:
0E HEX = 14 <= Day
0B HEX = 11 <=Month
07 D6 HEX = 2006 <= Year
It works for all the dates given by you.
So:
First (highest) two bytes = year
3rd byte = month
4th byte = day
If n is your number, then the conversion is:
day = mod(n,256)
month = trunc(mod(n,256*256)/256)
year = trunc(n/(256*256))
or the other way:
n = day + 256 * month + (256*256) * year
But as I said, I'm not an expert on encoding and you should definitely test this hypothesis on other dates and coresponding encoded values - preferrably from different months and years. -

Go to Solution.Please explain what you mean, because there are many ways to go from numeric to string.
The terms HEX and ASCII have no meaning unless you explain exactly what you are trying to do.
If you take a numeric (DBL, I32, U8, CXT, etc), you can represent it as a string using typecast or flatten to string, and the information will be retained bit by bit. If you later unflatten or typecast it back, nothing is lost.
Here, the resulting string is typically to readable, unless the string is displayed in hex format.
If you talk about formatting, you might lose a lot of information irreversibly. You can only format integers to hex format. If you format a DBL to a decimal string representation, you need to ensure that you show enough decimal digits. Even if you do, there will be small differences due to the inability to fully represent certain fractions in the other numeric system (binary vs. decimal). A formatted string is typically readable directly.
