Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen. -
I have brought a 17'' MacBook Pro 2.5ghz core 2 duo 2gb. Model A1261. It seems I can upgrade to either 8gb or 16gb ram! But since It's 2006'ish, I just want some advice on the best ram that would work for a good price. Thanks :)

Based on the information that you have supplied, you have a Early or Late 2008 MBP. Maximum RAM that it will accept is 6 GB with the following specifications: 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

I have problems with my macbook pro ... I recently bought "OS X Lion Mountain" but complete installation did not work ... purchases every time when I look biem appstore is still installed ... so now I have OS X version 10.8.3 ...
does it say not installed or does it say "download" in app store purchases?
if it say's download, then it's there for future use if you need to download it again.

I have an early 2008 macbook pro that is running slow after upgrading to lion. Is there anything I can do? this is what I have,Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting. -
I keep getting the message "The application could not be downloaded. The installation could not be started." with a "Retry" and "Cancel" button, I have been re-trying for several hours to no avail. What is the problem?

I have tried many times today to install iTunes 10.5 in order to update to iOS5 on my Iphone 4 however it just wont work. I have a MacBook Pro and when I use the software update it says that I have already downloaded iTunes 10.5 but when I go to install it and it says it is writing the files and the bluw bar is working its way across the page and then becomes very very slow and and at the last millimetre it seems to just hang there and do nothing. I even left if like this for several hours and nothing progressed. I have since tried to update via the iTunes program and the same problem happens. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.

Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)". And then it just quits the copy or move.
I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.
I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.
However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.
I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.
Who can help me??

- make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
- do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
- perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
- make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
- after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.

Can't get Windows 7 to recognize my keyboard, usb drives, nor the mouse pad on my MacBook Pro. Have settup Bootcamp division and loaded Win 7. Apparantly the needed drivers did not load. How do I deal with this issue?

First off, I found out if you use a 32GB Flash Drive or larger, you need to format it with EXFAT format, not MS-DOS FAT. I was also trying to use USB 3.0 Flash Drives which may have something to do with my problems. I was successful in my installation attempt when I used an 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive formated in DOS/FAT.
Also ensure when you install Windows, that Windows 7 Premium (NOT Basic) is selected for installation (also had the option to install Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate but do not have the license for them). I did not see that window with all the options on any of my three previous installation attempts. I noticed that Windows 7 Basic is the default which may have been part of the problem.

I upgraded few weeks ago to Mavericks from snow leopard. Since then , Ipad is often not recognized from macbookpro. When it is I cannot transfert gpx files from macbook pro to ipad through itunes like I could do it with snow leopard. So I cannot transfert any files to be read by navigation app on my ipad. I often have no internet conections so I need to specifically download through usb and itunes. Thanks for any hints.

It started with my itunes not being able to update and it said errors. Then I uninstalled multiple programs the forums told me to do. Still had errors trying to uninstall. Then tried to reinstall, errors. Then tried to go back and restore my computer to a previous time when Itunes was working. It has disapeared. The programs I have tried to "repair" in ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS are:
ITUNES
APPLE APPLICATION SUPPORT
APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE
BONJOUR
QUICKTIME
The error says: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
I thought I uninstalled all these programs, but they are still there, yet I can't find Itunes to open it. I tried connecting my Ipod to see if Itunes would open and it won't.
The only thing I can think of is to wipe out my whole computer to the basics and start over?!?!

Why won't my MacBook install new software updates?
When I click on Software Update it says "Install 11 items." Among them are iTunes 10.6.3, Safari, Garage Band Update, iPhoto Update and so on.
When I click "Install 11 Items" it doesn't install anything. It says I must restart my computer to finish installation. So, I restart. Afterwards it asks for my password, I figure for installations.
But nothing is changed, and when I click updates I get the same 11 program updates. This has happened at least seven times in the past seven tries.
Plus, my battery is stuck. It won't come out of the computer. Though the abve issue is most troubling.
Thanks.Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) is a purchased product, you can get it from the Mac app store. If your MacBook can support it though you may want to wait and purchase Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) which will become available sometime later this month. It will also be a purchase, but it is not necessary to get Lion first, and it is going to be $20 rather than the $30 for Lion. You can find out if your MacBook will run it on this page.
That security update can be found here. The Java update is available here. You can search for other updates on this page.
I don't know why the installer is not performing as it should. It is highly unlikely that the battery has anything to do with your installation issues.
