"The safest route for existing users of mobile phones, particularly if they use BT Fon or Openzone, is to switch off their Wi-Fi when they leave home and only use it on systems they know to be secure – such as at home or at work. Everywhere else you use Wi-Fi – whether in a coffee shop, an airport, a railway station and especially out in the street – you are taking a calculated risk."

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy. The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your boot volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.

  • Every movie purchase through iTunes fails to transfer to my iPhone or iPad and the message I get is this: some of the items in the itunes library, including were not copied to the ipad because you are not authorized for them on this computer... help?

For a couple months now, every movie purchase through iTunes fails to transfer to my iPhone or iPad giving me the error: "some of the items in the iTunes library, including were not copied to the iPad because you are not authorized for them on this computer". I have read many forums about deleting, reinstalling, de-authorizing and authorizing my iMac through the iTunes store. Many suggestions don't work except to rename the movie to *.MP4 in Finder under the iTunes movie directory. I imagine this is a setting or a bug somewhere... any suggestions on how to bypass having to rename the files in Finder? My research into Google suggests this problem dates back to 2007 or so but it is now more prevalent than ever.
    Thanks.

  • Tutorial - how to track user progress in a Captivate movie

I wanted to start working with the new scripting capabilities
in Captivate 4 and thought a good first project would be to create
a set of variables and custom actions and execute the actions based
on the state of the variables. I wrote up a description/walkthrough
with screenshots and the source .cp is downloadable here:
    http://elearninglive.com/wordpress/2009/01/tracking-user-progress-in-captivate-4-using-var iables-and-actions/
Hopefully it proves useful to others!
A couple of things I mention at the bottom of the post in
regards to the new features in CP4:
    1. The actions window is amazingly slow once you add more
than a handful of actions. Perhaps it's just my machine? I have a
very fast machine with lots of ram, but perhaps it's something
    unique to my environment?
    2. You can't 'chain' actions. In other words, you cannot use
'execute multiple actions' setting to execute user-created actions,
just the built-in ones, which seems to me a pretty big limitation.
I had to work around it.
    3. As an add-on to #1 above - there is no way to
import/export code. Since the actions window is so slow it would be
ideal if we could just import code written in a text file, or
better yet, have a simple code editor (like the actions panel in
    Flash).
My 2 cents, fwtw, as a new CP4 user....

The biggest problem Authorware had was poor marketing. Second
    was it had no
way to natively create the eye-candy that Flash was wowing
    the world with.
Third, there was no attempt by Macromedia modernise
    Authorware with a lot of
very basic things that would have made a huge difference to
    everyone's
    perception of the tool
Fourth, Marketing kept telling people Authorware was dead,

I think it is clear to those of us that have had to move to
    Captivate from
Authorware that Captivate is *very* lacking in specific
    advanced features
and functionality that old hands are used to. As with any
    product, users are
bombarding adobe with requests that boost the power and scope
    of Captivate.
    It's a natural progression.

  • Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happen

Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happened any idea what causes this??
    iMovie '08, Mac OS X (10.5.8), FCE 4

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • How do I move files in Users/Shared instead of copying?

I cannot move any files in /Users/Shared, even to other folders within Shared.  Dragging a file or folder in /Users/Shared shows the green "+" copy icon and creates a copy even if I hold down CMD while dragging.  Is this normal behavior?  How do I move a file instead of copying within /Users/Shared?  I was attempting this from an account with admin privileges and had read/write access to both source and destination sub-folders.  Any thoughts how to fix this?  I've never seen this behavior before on earlier OS X versions.
2013 iMac with Mac OS 10.8.5

If you want to move a file from one folder to another on the same volume (hard drive), either drag the file(s) from the current folder onto the folder to which you want to move it or select the file(s) you want to move and copy (Edit>Copy or Command C) and then open the folder you want to place them into and paste (Edit>Paste or Command V).
If the folders are on different volumes, say you want to move some files to your external hard drive, perform the same steps as above. However between volumes, the Mac copies files. This is to prevent accidental erasure. You'll then need to return to the old folder and erase the files (drag to the trash can on the Dock or Command delete key).

Thanks for that, on the sync via iTunes, when my iphone is connected to iTunes via USB my photos tab says my iphone but I can never see any pics there. If I press Sync it still doesn't show anything.
Correction from my original post, it only comes up with PhotoStream on my computer when I'm connected via USB.

  • HT4623 My laptop hardisk usage increases approximately 7GB after I updated my iPhone 4S version to 6.1.2. I believed there is hidden temporary files which still hidden in my laptop.

i was updated my iphone 4S version yesterday night from version 6.1 to version 6.1.2 using iTunes 11.0.1.12 version. However after i updated my iphone 4s, i realized that my laptop's hardisk usage increases! Before i updated my iphone 4s, my laptop's hardisk free space was around 9.5GB. However after i updated my iphone 4s yesterday night, the hardisk free space suddenly dropped to 3.24GB (Approximately 6GB has used up).
I has been trying to search the reason why the free space can decrease that much at my Local Disk C but i couldnt found any additional files that caused this problem. I believed there is some hidden temporary files which still hidden in my laptop.
Please kindly assist on this matter AS SOON AS POSSIBLE since i dont wish my storage to be used up everytime when i update my iphone version.

locating of such files 100% depend on if it's windows or mac

  • Hidden Private File and contents - hack or remote user?

    Hi Guys.
Still think i have a hack or am being remotely accessed.
Found a private folder - hidden. the name should be my name - who is wheel or system - usually in this area it is my name?
would it be useful for you guys for me to show the contents of everything in here to see if here is a hack?
would macscan be able to find this hidden priviate file and find if there was something malicious?
    - james.

The private folder is a normal & essential part of OS X. It is hidden because you should not tinker with its contents unless you know exactly what you are doing.
Likewise, system & wheel are normal & essential parts of the OS. See the "Owner, Group, Others" section of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 for more about this.
You are not being hacked. Everything you see is normal.

  • Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
    - Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
    - Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
    - Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
    - Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.
    The shared folder is here:
Macintosh HD > Users > Shared

  • You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount "...

I know there are various posts already out there on remedies for recovering your data stored on a FileVault account when you receive the following message at the login screen; *"You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount " at this time"*, but this genuinely worked for me despite AppleCare providing absolutely no assistance whatsoever. In fact, if I had followed their advise I'd be inconsolable right now having wiped my MacBook Pro and contemplating the prospect of rewriting my two essays due in 3 days time!
I, in a moment of shear stupidity, decided to move the sparsebundle file in my one and only account to trash. Thinking nothing of my foolish actions I shut down for the evening without a care in the world. The next day I started up my computer as usual, and as usual I was prompted at the login screen for my password. I entered the correct password, but was alarmed to see the message above flash before my eyes. Without boring you all with what I did over the weekend waiting for AppleCare to open again on Monday morning. Anyway, this post is specifically for people who have put the sparsebundle of their FileVault-enabled account in the trash (NOT anything else!) without emptying it, of course! The other prerequisite is that you must REMEMBER YOUR FILEVAULT ACCOUNT PASSWORD!
    1. Firstly, you must insert *Disc 1 of the Mac OS X Install* discs.
    2. Restart your computer holding down the letter S (make sure you are holding this down BEFORE the start up noise sounds)
    3. Select the appropriate language and continue to the next screen (DO NOT go past the next screen, the WELCOME screen)
    4. At the grey bar at the top, under Utilities, select *Reset Password*
    5. Select the Administrator/Root account and proceed to change the password of this account to test
    6. Confirm the password by reentering it and click Save
    7. Restart your computer and at the login screen you should now be able to select an account named Other
    8. The username for this account is root and the password is test (the password you entered earlier)
    9. Using Finder, locate the Terminal utility, which can be found in *Applications --> Utilities*
    10. Enter the following, ignoring the bold of course (pay attention to lower cases AND spaces!): *defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE*
    11. Hit Enter
    12. On the next line, enter: *killall Finder*
    13. Hit Enter again
    14. Type: exit on the next line and close Terminal
    15. This has enabled the hidden files on your computer to be visible
    16. You then need to locate the sparsebundle file in the trash of your usual account folder (it could be 501, so search for that too) whilst logged in to the administrator account
    17. Once you have found it, click *Go to Folder* under Go in the grey bar and type /Users/
    18. Create a *new folder* at this location with a new username
    19. Move the sparsebundle from its present location to the folder you have just created
    20. Click Get Info on the new folder, and at the very bottom click *Apply to enclosed items*
    21. In *System Preferences --> Accounts*, create a new user with EXACTLY the same name as the folder you created (eg. Folder name = burtreynolds, new user = burtreynolds)
    22. A window should appear if you have done the above correctly stating *A folder in Users folder already has same name, would you like to use it?*
    22. Click OK
    23. Click *Show All* at the top of the Accounts window
    24. Restart your system and log in to the new account you have created
    25. The sparsebundle should now be visible
    26. Double-click on the sparsebundle, it will prompt you to enter a password
    27. Enter the password of your former account (if you have genuinely forgotten this password, I honestly can't help any further at this point)
    28. If the password is correct, the sparsebundle will automatically mount and you will have access to all the files
    29. NEVER EVER USE FILEVAULT AGAIN AND BACK UP ALL DATA YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE!!!
The above worked for me, and to say I'm mildly annoyed with AppleCare is, well, putting it mildly really!

  • FTP Uploading Hidden Unix Files Fails

This problem has existed every since I first tried to upload files on a Mac via FTP (at least to my linux webserver).
It seems the hidden unix files used for indexing (or something) ( ie: ._ ) and exist for each file on the hard drive are the problem.
In the past I just setup a filter on my FTP client to omit those files, and I've heard there is another setting on most FTP clients that will solve the problem, but I'm wondering if there is an operating system tweak I can do.
I am trying to use the FTP client built into Adobe Lightroom, and it appears to be failing for the same reason, but I don't have any options to set that will fix it.
    Thanks a lot,
    DiFFeReN7

On a Mac, I've tried CuteFTP, a free Mac FTP client
and now the FTP client built into Adobe Lightroom.
On a PC, I've tried CuteFTP, FlashFXP, FileZilla, and
    maybe another.
On every single one I had to filter out those files.
Unfortunately, Lightroom does not have that
    capability.
I typically use ftp or sftp on the Mac and the same tools (via Cygwin) on the PC. There is also a nice open-source GUI for the Mac called Cyberduck.
Still, I don't really understand your problem. I haven't had any such problems on a Mac since MacOS X.
Yes, because Macs are not set to view hidden files.
In unix, a period . before a filename makes it
    hidden.
If I wanted to see them I would use the TinkerTool to
    display them.
No. On a Mac, these ._ files simply do not exist. They are part of the HFS+ file system. You still have a few "traditionally hidden" files like ".DS_Store" and ".Trashes" but the "._" files are different beasts altogether.
The only time you will ever notice these files is if you use access a non-Mac server such as Samba, WebDAV, or NFS on your Mac. Then, your Mac will try to "pretend" it really has an HFS+ file ssytem and create all those "._" files. All the other operating systems will be able to see them and their users will probably complain about Mac users messing up the servers. On a Mac, from the Finder, they will be hidden. On a Mac, using the terminal, you will be able to see them.
These files might also appear when you create a Zip or Tar archive on your Mac. In these situations, the Mac tries to archive "all" the information and will create the "._" inside the Zip or Tar file. I have an older version of Tar that I keep around so that it won't do this.
Are you trying to upload to an FTP server on a Mac? I have to tell you, I have never experienced any sort of problem like this. What you describe doesn't make any sense. You also say that it chokes on "._" files from you upload from a PC. Those "._" shouldn't exist on a PC. I'm really confused.
Perhaps you should try Cyberduck or sftp.

  • How do I delete hidden photo files?

When I'm on the road I use my iPad as a depository for my camera photos. I remove the chip from my camera insert it into the iPad card reader and upload them. Some are .jpg and some are .orf files (the RAW format for Olympus pictures).  My Usage meter for photos now reads 30.5GB used for photos but I only have a handful showing. I know the .orf files are there but not seen as when I download to Lightroom they are imported but I can't see them on the iPad to delete them from the iPad. I can delete their .jpg brothers but I can't see or delete the .orf hidden raw files.  Regardless of the number of seen .jpg files I delete, I can't move the 30.5gb usage number.  My usage says 30.5gb so I continually get no more room error messages but can't find a way to clear out my photo folder.  I don't sync photos with my desktop.  I would be willing to erase all photos but don't know how. Even if I could select every photo through "Selection" it doesn't get at the hidden files. Any ideas?

Do my computer need to take up 220GB of my hard drive to work? I have tons of external hard disks, but I need to be able to have my basic documents on my Mac.

  • How do I disable iPhone keeping track of everywhere I go?

I saw online that the iPhone keeps track of everywhere we have **ever** been and saves this information in a file on the local computer for easy retrieval.

    http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/
"The file contains the latitude and longitude of the phone's recorded coordinates along with a timestamp, meaning that anyone who stole the phone or the computer could discover details about the owner's movements using a simple program."
My question is how do I turn this map archiving OFF? I do not want my iPhone to keep a map of everywhere I've ever been, and I definitely don't want someone breaking into my computer and getting a copy of where I go either.
And was this tracking mentioned in the EULA?

Yes I saw this and it should be of concern to anyone who has a cell carrier enabled iOS device.
The program on that page doesn't give the exact, second by second, level of detail required for tracking purposes so someone can't use it to snoop. Rather it's a demonstration of what is capable IF the program is modified to show those results as the data is certainly there.
So someone would have to modify the open source code to show more detail, which I'm sure won't be very long at all and we will see the better version hosted somewhere in short order.
The way to defeat this, your phone being remotely tuned on and used as a listening device, and tracking by cell carrier companies who (so far as we now know) keep 6 months of cell tower triangulation records recorded 8 times a hour, is to use what's called a "faraday bag"
A "faraday cage or bag" is a item that can block electronic transmissions. A unplugged, used microwave oven can double as such a device for the home, provided the door is closed.
Also many phones that are off are not really off, passwords have no effect neither.
RDIF bags with stainless steel threads used to block drive by recordings of passports are available (and sold out currently) on sites like ThinkGeek.
Naturally any device in a faraday bag or cage is unable to recieve incoming calls.
And currently in the State of Michigan, police are stopping motorists and using a handheld device to download everything on their phone, over 3,000 models are supported. Encryption, passwords, location data, pictures, chat logs, everything ever done with the device, even stuff that's been erased.

Also the SSD/Flash drives used in devices like computers, iPads, iPhones, tablets etc are NOT being erased.

So it appears the government, in cooperation with numerous companies and industries, has sold out any right of privacy we have.
The only option is to not use the devices.
