Hide extension in file name input field when saving?

A few days ago in Photoshop CS6 I started automatically getting an extension in the file name input field.
Previously, when I did a "save as" I got, for example "image01."
A few days ago I started getting "image01.jpg."
I have another installation of CS6 on another desktop and on that one I get simply "image01." That's the way is had been on this machine.
This has nothing to do with file/folder options in Windows Explorer. I don't see extension names anywhere but in the Photoshop 'save as' input field.
It is highly annoying because I process a lot of images and having to get rid of the ".jpg" wastes time.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, everyone for your replies. Perhaps I did not explain this clearly.
This change I experienced has nothing to do with Windows Explorer settings.
Here's what the input looks like on my secondary machine and how Photoshop behaved on my primary machine until a few days ago:
All that is shown is the file name: No extension.
Here's what I'm getting now:
Suddenly Photoshop in adding ".jpg" to the end of the file name. This happens in both 64 bit (my default) and 32 bit (I never use it but tested i)t.
I have not changed anything yet, but could this be a Photoshop preferences issue as gener7 suggested? I made no changes to my Photoshop installation prior to this starting to happen.
As an aside. I'm surprised people like having the extension in the file name. I have never found that to be necessary at all, since Windows Explorer shows the file type right in the window:
And if you select an image it's also shown on the lower left:
I use primarily .jpgs, .tiffs, and CR2 files and even without looking at the examples above, the icon alone tells me what kind of file it is.

  • Why do the file extensions (.jpg .gif .png) no longer appear when I click on a previously saved image to use that image's file name (particularly important when saving a series of images using the same root name)?

I save a lot of images using firefox, often times from a large batch or series of images. It used to be that I would click on a previously saved image and the entire file name including the file extension (i.e. image_example.jpg) would appear in the "save as" line. Now when I click on a previously saved file, the file name appears without the file extension (i.e. image_example). Which means I have to manually type .jpg every time. For a large collection of images that I am hoping to use the same root file name and then add chronological numbers at the end, this has become incredibly frustrating, especially as it is a previously unnecessary task.
I am using a new Macbook Pro and maybe there's something Apple related to this...? It did not happen on my old PowerBook G4. I have file extensions turned on in System Preferences.
It should be noted that I have searched high and low and have even gone into the Apple Genius Bar where they were just confused as I was and of course ended by urging me to use Safari (shocker!) as it has all kinds of new extensions and bells and whistles. I seriously feel alone on an island with this dumb, hard to google problem. Thanks so much for any help anyone out there might have.
I mean: is this as simple as changing a setting in about:config?
    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your response Mylenium, however like I mentioned multiple times, I did change all of my trackpad/scrolling settings in system preferences.  And if I wanted to use a normal mouse (or a tablet), I would've gotten an iMac instead of a MacBook Pro.  I travel often and work all over the place, not always with access to a decently sized workspace that would be required for using a mouse or tablet.

When you first save a project, look at the bottom.  A check box exists for "include assets."  If checked, several options are made available.

  • Dot file names get truncated when pdf from INDD

We noticed that if the setting in windows xp is "hide file extension for known file types" is selected any file name in INDD that contains a "dot" will be truncated when the pdf file name is generated. Is there any way that INDD can be modified to see a "dot" used in a file name. (such as st-809.4.indd)

Don't hide file extensions? In my book, that's a bad setting, anyway.

  • Hide extension for files in download window

Every time I download an image it has a stupid name and I have to edit it. However when I triple click the name, the image's extension gets involved and I have to rewrite it again. It wouldn't be a problem if I didn't download about 10 images daily. I used Google Chrome and it hid the file extension in download window, which made the full process of renaming easier. How could I hide the extension of files in downloading window?

  • How can I set extensions in "File of type" field in JFileChooser

I am using JFileChooser to get the file for opening or saving activities.
I want to restrict the user for file type... during opening or saving a specific file.
Bydefault it is set to "All types *.*". Instead of *.* I want to add options like *.doc, *.txt.
secondly when a user double clicks on a directory, its name appear in the File name text box. I want to disable this. I want to initially set a file name their, which will change only when the user clicks in that text field and type a file name.
Kindly help me regarding this problem.

You can restrict the file types by using the javax.swing.filechooser.FileFilter
Look up the API docs for details.
I'm not sure how you would restrict the user from double-clicking on a directory.

  • Target file name as field in target structure

    Hi SDNers,
I have a requirement where I need to populate a field in target structure with the target file name, this will be a counter.
So if the interface is run 2 times already the third file should have name XXXXXXX_03 and also this needs to be mapped to a field in the target structure.
Any ideas on how to achieve this?
(Pls Note: I am aware of ASMA and variable substitution)

  • File names get jumbled when using Add Folder to Library

I have a set of .mp3 files created by playing vinyl LPs into a software sound recorder. Each of these is named with a number as the first two characters of the file name (the track number) and then the name of the song.
I create the appropriate folder with the ArtistName and subfolder with the AlbumName in the Itunes directory and then copy the .mp3 files into the subfolder.
My problem occurs when I 'Add Folder to Library'. The .mp3 files don't change, but the names of the tracks listed in the Itunes library are goofed up. There is no strict pattern, but mainly it shows the 3rd track having the 2nd track's name, the 4th track has the 3rd track's name, etc. I have to go back and rename all the tracks to make the Itunes Library match the actual .mp3 files. (I can tell they are mis-assigned by the file sizes).
It might be a Windows-only thing, I'm not sure. Any idea how I can make the Itunes Library match its index to the actual files added when importing? Or is there some other technique I should use to import these .mp3 files?
It is possible it is related to the fact that that initially the internal data in the .mp3 files merely shows 'Freecorder' for the Album and Artist in every file.
Where can I report this as an 'official' bug to Apple?

Actually, your suggestion was somewhat helpful. It wasn't the 'Freecorder' in the Artist and Album slots. But when I look at the properties of the files generated by Freecorder in Windows Explorer, it appears the internal file names are being mis-matched with the actual .mp3 file names, so it's Freecorder that's creating the problem.
Interesting. OK, It looks like it isn't an Itunes problem after all. But it's easy enough to edit the internal properties tags (Windows Explorer/ Right-Click / Properties / Summary) before I add the folder to Itunes.
    Thanks.

  • How can I hide the picture file name in the aperture album?

Hello everyone, could anybody give me a help here?
I made a book with black background and the picture file name was printed white in the book. How can I get it hide, without having to go one by one deleting it?

How can I get it hide, without having to go one by one deleting it?
That will depend on the book theme you are using. With some of the themes the filename is an integral part of the metadata displayed with the images. In that case you would need to create a new custom master page design without the metadata textbox and replace the master of all your pages (see: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=24%26section=13), or simply change the book theme to a theme without filenames (but that may cause some texts to vanish, so try that only on a copy of your book).

  • Retain file names in layers when importing

Is it possible in Illustrator CC to import 40 files and have each layer retain the file name
When I import multiple files each image layer is labeled <image>
    Thanks!

Simply open the comp that is created when you import an AI file as a composition. You're making work for yourself.
You are not understanding how After Effects treats assets. Each asset is the size of the asset with the anchor point in the center. Retaining layer sizes means each layer in the Illustrator file is imported in a folder as a separate asset the size of the layer. It's the same with Photoshop files imported as a composition.

  • Support for file extensions with more than three characters when saving - I want my FLAC!

Why does the Wave Editor still drop characters from filenames with more than three character extensions when you save a file? But since -opening- a FLAC file with an extension of ".flac" doesn't get chopped to ".fla", why does Audition still chop off the extra character when -saving-?
It gets old quickly when you have to save, close and reopen files in order to get Audition's Multitrack editor to play nice and be able to find files when you reopen the Session.
Given that the FLAC filter is open source, I may just have to modify the code and recompile it to force a save to ".fla"... But of course, ".fla" is a Flash file extension, which I also use, so that is a crude hack for me.

    Hi bro...
use in BYTE mode in place of in TEXT mode. and at the end of each line give some special charactor so as to distinguish between lines. This is effected  by unicode check too

  • INCX file names gets mangled when transfered to Windows

When I export my InCopy articles from InDesign CS3, I can choose the file name BUT InDesign adds some of the text within the article to the file name.
If special Scandinavian characters is in the file names and we pack the files with zip compression, the file names gets corrupted and the editors can't check in the files to edit them.
How do we pack the files in a way so that this corruption does not happen. Yes, we can burn a hybrid CD-R but since we need to distribute the files over the internet, this is not an option for us...
    /Dennis

Can't say I'm familiar with Scandinavian characters but could you give
us a bit more to go on? Like a before and after comparison of the names?
Does this happen if you're all working locally? If working remotely why
aren't you using the package feature?
