  • Can not remove or install itunes because hkey-local-machine\software\classes\.m3u\openwithlist\itunes.exe   no permission

itunes will not install or uninstall because  hkey-local-machine\software\classes\.m3u\openwithlist\itunes.exe   no permission.  I can edit and delete every other regedit but not this key

I found this solution on the Apple Support Forums. Adding the SYSTEM account is what worked for me:
+Let's check your permissions on the key.+
+In your "Start Search" box, type run and click on the Run that comes up. In your run, type regedit and hit enter.+
    +In regedit:+
    +Expand HKEYLOCALMACHINE+
    +Expand SOFTWARE+
    +Expand CLASSES+
+Right-click on pcast and select "Permissions".+
+Select your user account name. Do you have full control of the key? If so, also select SYSTEM. Does the SYSTEM account have full control of the key?+

  • Error when upgrading to 10.5 on Windows7. Message is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\Software\Classes\.m4b\OpenWithList\itunes.exe. Verify that you have sufficent access to that key. I am an administrator but cannot get to that key for some reason.

I tried creating a new user account and installing and it would not work either. I tried the uninstall recommendation from Apple and that did not work. I am running out of ideas. I even had my IT look at it and they said Apple sometimes locks down their registries for some reason.

This isn't really my thing but no one else has replied.
A few thoughts, if this is an upgrade, are you using the same account to do the upgrade as you used for the original install? If now it might be worth trying the other account.
Although you account has admin status, it might be worth logging in as THE adminstrator, if you haven't done that.
Although you don't have HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\.aif\OpenWithProgIds, you didn't say if you have HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\.aif - if you do it might be worth checking permission there.
If this is an iTunes 7.5 upgrade problem - you didn't say - it might be worth gettting the details to royb - see this post:

even though you're not getting a 1406 or 1402 error message number with that, when one of those messages references the /software/clases/.cda/openwithlist/itunes.exe key, the best place to start is with the following document:

  • ITunes error message while installing 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/classes/

    SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!
I am trying to install the newest version of iTunes (7.2.0.35) and I keep getting an error message halfway through the install that says...
    "Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/classes/.pls/OpenWithList. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact support." It then begins rolling back the action and it never installs iTunes. I have administrative access and I can't even access that key manually from the registry. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah, i already tried that one too. I sat for a good 5-6 hours doing every related discussion post solution, even things that didnt seem like they would work, and i get the same error. Any other suggestions besides pages that i could find on my own? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for responding in the first place.

  • Error message hkey_local_machine\software\classes\itunes.aifc keeps appearing when updating.

Error message hkey_local_machine\software\classes\itunes.aifc keeps appearing when updating.  Then update uninstalls.  I was trying to fix a missing driver error.

Press WinLogoKey+R to open the Run... dialog box
Type in Regedit and press enter/return
Tap the plus symbol next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Tap the plus symbol next to SOFTWARE
Press C on the keyboard, then again or scroll down until Classes is selected
Tap the plus symbol or use the right-arrow key to open the branch
Press i on the keyboard, then use the Page Down key, scroll bar or arrow keys to locate iTunes.aifc
The registry editor should now look something like this: (Click to enlarge)
Right-click on the iTunes.aifc key and click Permissions... to see what is going on. My current permissions for the iTunes.aifc key are shown below: Giving Administrators and/or yourself Full Control should be enough to let the installer make changes. Alternatively you could delete the key and let the iTunes installer recreate it.

  • Someone please post their HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository from their registry.

The title says it all somehow my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository got deleted so i need someone to send me theirs (windows 8 only please!) This has
caused all apps to be disabled so please HELP. Thanks in advance!

    I fixed it myself.
You have to create a new user account. Now you might say that this is impossible due to the fact that the "PC Settings" app is disabled, but you can use the command prompt an a workaround.
1st step: right-click the bottom left of your screen and select "Command Prompt (Admin)"
2nd step: type "net user /add NEWUSERNAME NEWPASSWORD" without the quotes and hit enter
3rd step: if you get the success message type "net user NEWUSERNAME /active on
Now Logoff and go to your new account and apps should work!
You might to remove your old account from control panel and user accounts.  There is an option to save the files from your old account to the desktop of your new account.  Hope this helps you.
