Hold switch problems, great way to start a summer

I have a year old 160g that just started randomly skipping and fastfowarding through songs recently. Today it decided to go on hold even with the switch off hold also. Is this ipod done for??

Hello bluewaterhunter23,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is this ipod done for??
Hard to tell at this point. Could be early signs of failing hardware, but no reasons to jump to conclusions at this point.
What have you done in terms of troubleshooting the issue? Have you tried a simple reset of the iPod yet? Or a restore of the iPod via iTunes? If not, I would start there.

  • Hold Switch Problems

Recently, my 2GB iPod Nano's hold switch began giving me problems when I accidently pushed the hold switch too hard too fast and it caused the hold switch to become disconnected from the slider. It is now pushed down just enough to were the hold switch slider just slides back and forth uselessly. It is always in the locked position. I know that there is probably some way too fix this but I haven't thought of it yet. I am currently waiting for the iPod remote ( w/ hold switch) to arrive and as of today that will be my next plan of action. Also, I have already sent the iPod to apple and they said they wouldn't fix it because it was accidental damage or abuse and that isn't covered under the warrenty . ( Well they would fix it but they wanted 205.00 USD) Does anybody have any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are other places that can fix your iPod other than Apple. For example, try checking out iPod ResQ, or Broken iPods.
Of course, you could possibly take it apart yourself, and try to put the hold switch back together. Note that doing this will will discontinue your current Apple warranty on your iPod.
    I hope this helps!

  • IPod Classic 160gb hold switch problem

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but my searches were coming up a bit short. I've got a friend who purchased a 160GB classic, and since buying it she has been unable to use the hold switch to keep buttons from getting pressed and turning the iPod on while sleeping (say, in a backpack, etc.).
I personally just restored the software to 1.1.1 and have done several resets, etc. I have been successful in getting the device to hold while off a total of 4 times. What happens is that you can put the device to sleep either by holding play/pause, or using the sleep menu item, and that works fine. The problem is when you then try to lock it in sleep, it turns on, and stays on indefinitely. While in this "on and locked" state, it's not playing music or really doing anything other than displaying the menu.
Any help is appreciated. I did nothing but talk up the iPod to her until she went and bought one, now she's regretting her purchase.
    Thanks in advance.

A restore would have ruled out the possibility of corrupted software/data. So at this point, we can be certain that the hold switch is faulty and needs to be replaced. Either that or replace the entire iPod.
    Here is Apple's repair pricing.

There are also third party services out there that will cost less. Just Google for "iPod repair" and you should get a number of hits.

  • E2500 / EA2500 Problems - best way to start over?

    Hi,
I installed the E2500 software and I thought everything was working except I couldn't access other devices (i.e., if I was on my laptop, I couldn't view the folders on my desktop). Then I realized that besides my secured connection, I also had an unsecure connection (a generically named one called "linksys"). Also, after installation I went out and got an AE2500 adapter for my desktop since its wireless LAN is 802.11b/g instead of 802.11n (which if I understand correctly has better security).
Anyway, due to the issues I'm having and I think I may have missed something in setting everything up (I found a helpful video just a little while ago), I'd like to start over. What's the best way to do that? Can I just uninstall Cisco Connect on my desktop and laptop? or would it be better to use a restore point to go back?
Thanks for any advice and help.

I already tried this before with E series model. Just reset the router and you can download the latest Cisco connect v1.4 software here. That will just set up everything for you and will update the router if needed.

  • Power switch problems (computer will not start)?

When I woke up this morning my (new) computer refused to start, it worked fine yesterday. Since the LED on the PSU was on I figured that it was something wrong with the power button. I switched places of the reset and power button on the mobo and the computer booted fine one (1) time, but wouldn't start the second time i tried.
Any idea of what could be wrong?

  • IPod Classic 80gb - Hold Switch Problem

When the hold swith is turned to ON
The screen shows the HOLD' Icon and it Blinks
Sometimes when the IPod is OFF it Turns itself ON because of this.
    What can I do?

No, the iTunes Store doesn't make any podcasts (except maybe New Music Tuesday... or is that one gone again...?). But it could be an issue with the people who make the podcast.

  • Trouble with the Hold Switch

I was using the Hold switch without a problem since I got my mini last June. Just recently the Hold switch starting acting up. First it was staying engaged after I switched it off - I know this because I can connect it to my computer and when it is recognized and lights up, I can see the locked icon. After I disconnect it from the computer the screen is blank and doesn't respond - can't reset it either. After an hour or so though it finally seems to become unstuck and I find it turned on by itself.
Now the latest "mind of it's own" thing is that while I'm playing songs, the locked icon will come on intermittenly. I've looked for articles and questions but don't see this problem. Any suggestions?

For a couple of weeks I worked around this by turning
off the hold switch about an hour before I wanted to
use it, and it would turn on.
I had to charge it this weekend, and since, I can't
get it out of the hold mode. Again I can tell it's
locked because when I connect it to the computer (and
the hold switch is off, I can see the locked icon.
Any body else experience this kind of hold switch
    problem??
I am having a problem with my ipod 4th gen. It will not get out of hold. The closed lock stays in the upper bar of the iPod.
I toggle and toggle - to no avail. Help. I do not want to buy another. I got it 12/2004.

    so what
    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked.

I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked. I had been having trouble syncing music, When I tried to sync, iTunes said it didn't recognize my iPod, even though I was on the iPod page in iTunes which showed the model number and the serial number of my iPod

I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?

  • IPod nano gen 4 forward button won't work, and the hold switch won't either.  I've tried restoring it and it didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions?

The forward button won't work and the hold switch doesn't either.  I tried restoring it, but that didn't work.

Restore to factory settings.new iPod if you have not yet already. If still problem time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My ipod nano is frozen, but my hold switch is broken so I can't reset it.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. When I plugged it into my computer to sync it it said I had to restore it.  I clicked restore, but it said the ipod couldn't be found and then my ipod froze. I can't reset it because my hold switch no longer works and toggling it doesn't do anything.  Is there a way to fix it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Mac OSX sofware update problems-computer will not start-up any more

    Hello
I am having problems & I cannot get back into my computer. It won't complete the start up & just has the grey apple in the middle of the white screen and nothing else.
I have an iBook G4 with Tiger on it - I am not sure which version of Mac OS X I was on when I did the software update but the one I was on last year when I came to this forum was 10.4.8 & I think I have updated it a few times since then so it was probably as I was attempting to install 10.4.11 as I do not have Leopard yet.
The problem began when I did the Mac OSX update that it told me about in software update & when it had completed the update it said I needed to restart my computer which I did & ever since then it will not completely re-boot. (Like I said it just has the white screen/grey apple before it gives the option of who you want to login as).
It seems as though other people have been having similar problems after installing Mac OSX software updates but I cannot find anything here in the forum that solves my problems (or at least not that I can understand at th moment...!)
I need to access things off my computer & can't. Not everything on there was backed up as I had been working on things that day/week. I also don't know how to access my files from another computer (the ones I am trying to connect from does not have tiger it is a PowerBook G4 & it has Mac OSX 10.3.9 on it).
Does anyone know the reason for this problem & how to access files from another computer via an etheret cable in OSX. I know someone who says it was a lot easier to connect computers before Mac OSX days but now it seems really difficult. The only way to start up my iBook G4 is using the Mac OSX install disk & I have tried to verify & repair hard disk permissions using disk utility that comes on the disk as well as verifying & repairing the actual disk but this has not fixed the problem.
I am hoping that I will be able to at least access my files & copy them over to be backed up before I do an erase & install of Mac OSX from the disks. But I am unsure of how to connect my iBook the PowerBook G4 I am on right now. Please help if you know how!
    Thanks,
    Jazamin

This just worked for my by connecting my other PPC computer to my G5.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1247044&tstart=0
Go down to the other link and follow the same instructions.
You must start up the good computer and shut down the frozen one. Connect via firewire and then hold down the T key while you start the frozen one.
It will show up on your good one, and then install the combo on the frozen one.
Hold down the power key on that computer to shut it down, disconnect and then start up again.
    Good luck

  • Different ways to start a run?

We have written a C-Sharp application that is a GUI wrapper around TestStand to hand-hold the operator through setup and execution of a test. I have noticed the following behavior differences with each of the different ways to start a sequence file running:
    a) When we useSequenceFileViewMgr.Run() to start the execution, TestStand does not prompt for a UUT serial number and it does not generate a DisplayReport event.
    b) When we use SequenceFileViewMgr.GetCommand(CommandKinds.CommandKind_ExecutionEntryPoints_Set).Execute(true) to start the execution, TestStand does prompt for a UUT serial number and it does generate a DisplayReport event.
    c) When we useSequenceFileViewMgr.GetCommand(CommandKinds.CommandKind_ExecutionEntryPoints_Set, 1).Execute(true) to start the execution, TestStand does not prompt for a UUT serial number and it does generate a DisplayReport event.
Are there other ways (better ways) to start an execution from a C-sharp application?
Behavior "C" is the behavior I am looking for, but I would like to understand why the calls have different results?
    Can someone enlighten me?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    tlaford,
What you're essentially doing is running different execution entry points.  If you look at the execute menu in the sequence editor, you will see three options (with the default process model, if you have a custom process model, you may have a different number).
    Test UUTs
    Single Pass
    Run <Name of current sequence>
When you call .Run() you're doing the same operation as Run <sequence name> from the menu.  This runs just the currently selected sequence and nothing else.  Great for debugging, but does not use the process model framework.
When you use one of the ExecutionEntryPoints, you are running one of the execution entry points from the process model.  Those generally call into the MainSequence sequence of your client sequence file.  And they perform other operations (such as gathering UUT data, and reporting) around the execution of your client file.  The default process models have TestUUTs as index 0 and SinglePass as index 1.
Using the SequenceFileViewMgr is the best way to start a new execution from a user interface programmatically.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hold switch does not keep on - is the switch broken?

Hi. My faithful 5th gen. iPod started to stand on its own - it didn't like to obey my wish for keeping hold switch on or off. It is on, all the time. So, is this a sign for independence or resignation? In other words, is the switch physically broken or not? I've done all those restarts etc. Regards, T.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have performed all the R's except Restore. When I try to restore the process begins, the status window opens, then an "Auto Play" window opens in the upper left side of my computer screen and I can see song titles from my Library flashing by. After a few seconds the "Auto Play" window closes, the status window closes, and and error message window appears saying that the restore process has ended due to an unknown problem. I've tried to run the Restore process several times with the same result. I am running iTunes 7.0.1.8 and the summary info in iTunes says that my iPod is up to date. Where do I go from here?

  • Hold Switch On and Off not working - Always ON

    Hi,
I am having a serious problem with Hold Switch which is all the times in ON condition though I am moving right and left. None of the buttons are working because its in Locked state. Hold switch is not working. Is it a product related issue where in I need to go to store or is there any way to make it work.

Well it used to be that the iPods were not all that hard to open, especially with some simple plastic opening tools. However the new Classic line feature a brand new case design that to the best of my knowledge, no one has figured out how to open without breaking the case pieces. This is why if you look at many of the third parts battery sellings and iPod repair places, none are yet selling replacement batteries due to the inability to get into the ipod without ruining the case.
That said, if you do have a Classic, then it is obviously still under warranty since it just came out. Therefore, I would hit up your local Apple store or send it in if you don't have one near by. The hold switch not working is a warranty issue that they should cover.
