Home Theater Components

I'm getting ready to run cables up for my new Samsung TV.  Question is what cables do I need.  Electrician coming in two weeks and want to order cables before he gets here.
The three components are
BOSE 3-21 system w/ HDMI
Verizon FIOS box with DVR
PS3
I think the Bose (came with 6 ft HDMI) would go into cable box - then HDMI up to TV.
PS3 would have HDMI from it to TV - but what would I get the sound to Bose with RCA
I think I need at least 2 HDMI cables run up to the TV..
Any help would be appreciated
For the DVR - I currently have one digitial box and a couple regular converter boxes.  Which ones will be able to access the DVR?  Just the other Digital box?
Thanks

If the location between your TV and the AV equipment is reasonably close, you may want to consider putting in a conduit or chaseway instead of directly installing the wires.  This leaves your options open for the future as technologies do change and you don't want to have to tear your walls apart just because the next great technology requires a new cable type.
I redid my basement last year, and part of that was doing a full AV system.  The only wires I installed directly into the walls and ceiling were the speaker wires (7.2), which all run back to a termination panel behind the AV equipment.  For the TV, I put a chaseway in (an electrical box with the bottom cut out of it) behind where the TV was going to mount into the wall.  This allows me to run whatever wires I need.
As for the wires, my TV is a Sony XBR9.  I ended up with five wires running from the TV through the chaseway:
RG-6 to pickup the unencoded QAM channels directly on the TV
Power for the TV from a surge supressor (actually a smart strip which turns on and off some auxiliary components)
Ethernet since this is an Internet connected TV for streaming content such as Netflix
HDMI to bring video up from the receiver
Fiber TOSlink to take 5.1 audio from the TV (for Internet video and internal tuner) back to the receiver
You can see why I wouldn't want to run wires directly in the wall as these are all specialized cables and there is no telling what the next great TV may require.
I'm not sure why you are connecting your game machine directly to the TV.  If you really need to do this then the TOSlink cable will take audio back down to your receiver.  If you have enough HDMI ports on the receiver (most have three to five these days) then you should really connect all of the components directly to the receiver and let it switch the signals up to the TV and speakers.
I have my Verizon DVR, Blu-Ray player, and Standard Def DVD player all connecting to the receiver via HDMI.  I also have an old TiVo S2 connected to the receiver via composite video and two channel audio.  The receiver still has one vacant HDMI port so I can add another component in the future (such as a HTPC or a game machine if that should ever interest me).  None of these extra devices require a cable running directly to the TV.
There is the drawback that the receiver must always be on when watching anything, but as I always want the surround speakers working this is fine for me.  Also, the Verizon remote can be setup to turn-on the TV, DVR, and receiver at the same time as well as to always change volume on the receiver even when the DVR (STB) is the selected device.
As for your actual HDMI cables, I've been using ones I buy off of Amazon.com which cost about $3.00 with shipping.  I've had one flakey cable so far (out of five purchased), but at the price I can afford a few failures.  I woudn't trust these for direct install inside of a wall, but for device to device where the cables can be swapped out they have been fine.  Remember, when dealing with HDMI, it is digital.  The signal either gets through or it does not.  This is not like the analog days when the quality of the cable affected the quality of sound or picture.  There is no degredation as long as the signal comes through well enough to be decoded.  Monster (and some other companies) is making a lot of money trying to make people believe that HDMI is the same as the analog market.  Don't fall for it.
Hope this helps you in the planning and installation.

  • Samsung LED HDTV + Samsung BlueRay Home Theater Setup...

I just bought the systems listed above - and I'm trying to figure out how to get the TV setup to play through the Home Theater components.  I can get the Radio to play, through the speakers but I am not that familiar with setting these things up.  Much better at computers than TV/theater systems.  So, with that said - I got all the correct HDMI cables from necessary - 2 of them But can anyone tell me where to go to show (better than the documentation provided by the manufacturer) how to put these together and get them to work???????
    Hope someone can help me!
    thanks in advance....

Thanks for the Cable Box connection instruction.  I am sure I would have banged my head on that one.
Just bought the same TV-HT (only difference being the TV is the 55" 7100).
I have one more Q regarding this setup.   How do I connect an XBOX360 w/ HDMI output to this system?  My first thought was that I could take the XBOX360 HDMI out and connect it to the HDMI input on the receiver, but that was my first thought with the set top cable box
    Thanks in advance,

  • Add Wireless Bridge to TC Setup for Home Theater?

Hi, I'm admittedly green at this topic and not exactly sure how to ask the question. I have a 2nd generation TC in my basement connected to a cable modem for internet access. I have a budding home theater on our first floor and a new A/V receiver with internet capability, but it has to be Ethernet connected. It also seems to me that it would be more reliable and have higher speeds if I used Ethernet for my Apple TV and Oppo Blu ray player. What piece of hardware should I be looking to buy that can wirelessly connect with the TC in the basement and provide Ethernet connections to my home theater? I don't know what to look for and need some direction.
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Performance wise, the best choice by far would be to run an Ethernet cable from the TC location to the home theater location and then connect a 5-port or 8-port Ethernet switch to provide the wired connections that you need.
Next choice would be to add an AirPort Extreme to connect using wireless back to the TC and configure it to "extend" a wireless network.  You will have up to 4 Ethernet ports to connect wired devices to the AirPort Extreme and you will also have more wireless signal coverage as well in the home theater area.
Don't be fooled here though....although the A/V receiver, Apple TV and Blu-Ray player will appear to be connected as wired devices.....the connection to all of these devices will be limited by the quality of the wireless signal "hop" between the TC and AirPort Extreme.
To get an idea of whether this might work satisfactorily, move your MacBook Air to the same location as the home theater components and log on to the Internet. If you can get a good, fast, reliable wireless connection on the Mac, then the AirPort Extreme will likely deliver the performance that you need at that location.
Best of all worlds would be to run an Ethernet cable from the TC to the AirPort Extreme.  This would provide wired connections for all devices all the way back to the TC and also provide more wireless signal coverage in the home theater area.

  • Help on purchasing a Home Theater System...

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new HDTV and I am now looking into getting a good Home Theater System, since as I'm sure you all know, the speakers on my TV are pretty pathetic.
But in all honestly, I really don't know much at all about speakers and home theater systems, so that's why I'm here.
I hear that most home theater systems come with DVD and Bluray players, but I don't need either of those, since my ps3 and 360 give me 2 DVD players and a Bluray player already.
I am really looking to spend less than 400 bucks, or around that area if possible.
I also have one question: My HDTV only has 2 HDMI ports and one Component port and since I am using both of those (HDMI is being used for the cable and ps3 and component is used for my 360) I am wondering if there is some other way of connecting the Home Theater System?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Ok after looking at the manual for that reciever this is what I come up with.
One HDMI cable running from your PS3 to the reciever (BD in would be my choice)
One HDMI cable running from your Cable box to the receiver (dvd in would by my choice)
Now for you Xbox 360 you said you have the component cables for it, from what I can tell you can also get an HDMI connector as well. What you choose is up to you but this is how it would work.
    Xbox with component cables:
Since the receiver doesn't have component swtiching you would have to hook the xbox up to your tv with the component cables ( the way it is now).
Then run an optical audio cable from the xbox to the receiver SAT optical in.
If you get the HDMI cable most likely you would just run the HDMI cable from the Xbox to the receiver like the other components. If you went this route I would hook the xbox to the dvd hdmi in and the cable box to the SAT hdmi in though. Honestly it doesn't matter but it just might be less confusing that way.
Then you would need on optical cable running from the TV out to the TV in on the reciever. If you never watch regular tv you don't need this since the sound will come from your cable box anyway. But if you also have the tv hooked up to an antenna or something this will send the sound to the receiver.
And one HDMI cable running from the Receiver out to on the HDMI inputs on the tv. This is what will carry all of the signals going into your receiver to your tv.
And then the speakers connections which should be described in the instructions for the receiver. Just make sure the polarity is right when you connect them.
This configuration will let you control most or all of the components through the receiver since it switches most of them. Just choose the correct input and the tv will display it.
Okay, so according to that, I would need 4 HDMI cables to my HDTV, which would be impossible.... Unfortunately, my new HDTV only has 2 HDMI porsts, so is there a way to get around that issue? If I use HDMI for the ps3 and HD cable box, then is there a way to hook everything else up (including the reciever) without HDMI?
    Thanks in advance.

    hi sotim01,
    Thanks for posting!
    1. Uninstall all components,
Open Device Manager and Uninstall your Conexant audio under Sound and ganing controllers (make sure to place a check under delete driver software for this device)
    2. Open Control Panel Uninstall a program and highlight the dolby component and an Uninstall button will appear.
    3. Open your C: drive and Delete any folder that says drivers if non then continue with the next step
    4. Download this Driver for installation
            Conexant Audio Driver
    Install it and continue
    5. Open Drive C: now and you should have the Drivers folder back.
Open that, Open Connexant Open Dolby Gui,  then you should have Dolbyaa for Advanced audio.
Restart your PC and there you go!
    Let me know your findings

  • Can I connect my iMac's iTunes library via wi-fi to my Blu-Ray player so I can listen to the music on my computer with my home theater system?

My music library is on my iMac, located in a different room of the house than my home theater system with a decent Denon receiver and good Infinity towers. I have an iPod connector to the Denon which I can use, but the iPod has a limited library of songs, so I would like to somehow access my iMac music library and be able to play it through the home theater system. Hard wiring the components is out of the question due to length of run through several rooms of the house, no basement and cathedral ceilings. I already have my iMac and my Panasonic Blu-Ray player both connected to my wi-fi, and it seems there should be a way to connect both of them using the wi-fi. The blu-ray player is DLNA, but the Mac isn't, so that is out of the question. Is there any other way to get these components to talk to each other over wi-fi?

There is a DLNA media server called MediaLink that is designed for use with the Play Station 3.  It is not advertised as working with other DLNA clients but it usually will.  I use it to stream audio, video and pictures to a WDTV media player in my bedroom.  Works great, even supports iTunes playlists.  I believe it still has a free trial period so you can see if it works with your player.

  • NEED HELP --- hooking up tv, cable box, home theater

60" Samsung smart TV --- contains several HDMI inputs
Time Warner HD cable box --- contains 1 HMDI input; components as well
LG Home Theater in a box, Model #BH6820SW --- contains 1 HDMI output, red/white aux input, & yellow video output.
Very simple...... I want to turn my TV on, change channels with cable box remote & have my sound from TV come out of this home theater in a box I just bought.
I've been at this for hours and I'm ready to take it back because of the ongoing frustration. I have 3 HDMI cables to use (which obviously I won't need all of them), I have a red/white audio cables and a yellow video cable to use if needed.
Can someone out there PLEASE explain how this can be done?????????
    Thanks.

You may be able to do it by running a Digital Optical cable to the Digital optical input on the LG from the TW Cable Box, and a seperate HDMI cable to the TV from the TW Cable box.
Honestly though, I'd take it back and get a an AVR with HDMI switching, a set of speakers, and a standalone Blu Ray player. It'll cost more, but you'll get a better feature set, better performance, and more flexbilty to add more devices down the road.

  • Converting Wired Home Theater System to Wireless

I have a Sony home theater system with standard components: center channel, subwoofer, front right, front left, rear left, and rear right speakers.
I would like to convert my rear speakers to wireless.
I have looked at the RocketFish converter kit; but it seems that I would still have wires emitting from rear receiver box.
Do  you have any suggetions?  Are their other brand options that will not be too expensive.
NOTE: I do not want to replace my current surround system.  I have a baby on the way, and need to be thrifty with my $s.
    Thanks,

Wireless is not true wireless, as you have found out. Also wireless will compromise the overall quality of the sound. There will be interference and static sometimes. Maybe when an appliance turns on or a car with bad plug wires drives by.

  • Home theater connectivity, mode opti

    Hi Guys
So... a while buy I purchased X-Fi Fatalty... and up until a while ago i've ran it on few creative speaker sets as well as klipsch... everything worked fine except the speakers "sucked" if you will.
so i upgraded my stuff to a
    -Denon AVR-706 amplifier
-Paradigm Cinema 70 home theater package (audiophile quality at low price!)
now... i connect these to my x-fi through analog inputs because we all know digital won't do real time encoding of 5. games. here comes the problem. i used to listen to my 2 channel music in audio creation mode where i CLONED 2 front speakers to my 2 rear speakers. this gave me my stereo x2 effect whithout the degrading quality of CMSS. well you see when you go amp/home theater speakers with x-fi's implementation of bass settings you NEED to have the bass redirection turned on as well as the +5Hz boost. The problem is that there is NO bass redirection settings in audio creation mode and there's no way that i know of to clone my fronts to rears in entertainment mode. i don't want cmss upmixing because i dont believe it's cloning... i believe it's upmixig regardless of the 2 modes selected. Does ANYONE know how to clone these whether at the driver level or through a plugin (i use WMP on Vista Ultimate x64 SP)?
the other thing is.... maybe it's my amp but in regards to local radio reception x-fi volume needs to be cranked WAY up (75%) on the PC side to match the level of other components in the setup... does this thing go into some sort of a low volume mode? I'm not pointing fingers here for this one but maybe you guys know something I dont
    anyways.... thanks in advance!

  • 2ht - HyperText Home Theater

I want to start a new project.
The project is a web-based media center built in web2py.
Playback will done on the machine hosting the application (hereafter referred to as the HTPC). It is not intended to be used for websites that stream all your media. The HTPC hosts the web-server on the local network. Any device on the network with a web browser should be able to control the HTPC through the web application, including the HTPC itself, or any smart phone or tablet.
By default, there should be a core set of features for basic functionality. The application also needs to be extensible, using components and plugins.
Arch is obviously going to be the target OS, since this would be best used with standalone WM setups where a web-browser is launched on the HTPC with a homepage set to the web application. With that said, there's no reason why it shouldn't work with other distributions.
I am hosting the project on Github.
Let me know if you are interested. I have spent some time on a similar personal project myself, but I wanted to start over, making it a community project from the beginning.

    Hey AnastasiaMaier,
The answer given you by autotech796 is correct. The cost of home theater installation can vary greatly, depending on the client’s specific needs, the placement in their home, and the condition of that space.
We do sell a Home Theater Consultation service for $99.99; in this service an agent will come out to your home, to evaluate the space for your specific needs, in order to make sure you purchase the correct service and products. The cost of the Home Theater Consultation service is redeemable on any future home theater purchase $499 and up.

  • What's your sound system ? Home Theater ? PA ? other options ?

Please chime-in and post your system even if you have no other comment .
I just ordered the supped-up iMac and Logic Pro and I am excited to get started .
Now I'm just using my old Pioneer stereo system which really puts out but it's a mess of wires and I would like to get a new system .
Option #1) I'm looking for a small PA like the Passport 150 . Anybody ever use their pa for sound ? What about the Bose Column PA's ?
#2) There are lots of home theater systems in all price ranges since logic does surround sound .
#3) Pro studio speakers . I don't really see why they cost more ??
As a horn player I do like to turn up the volume sometimes to play-along so little computer systems (even really good ones) would probably not do .
Powerbook eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Pro studio speakers . I don't really see why they cost more ??
well this is a pretty simple one.. because studio monitors are actually a great deal better than home theatre speakers, in terms of faithfull reproduction of sound.
fact is, most sound systems for the domestic market are not much more than cheap components put together in nicely designed boxes. the boxes range from nicely designed to very nicely designed, and some high end ones are even extremely nicely designed.. boxes. made of either nice wood, very nice wood or extremely nice wood. then, you print a pretty, lifestyle-ey brochure, full of fancy looking diagrams and lots of talk of acoustics and transducers. these brochures range from nice to very nice to extremely nice, depending on how much you want to sell the system for, targeting exactly the kind of living room that it is designed to look good in.
if you want to use logic to record and produce music properly, you'd be better off going for monitors that are intended to let you hear what is going on as best as possible, as opposed to a system that is designed to give as exciting a listening experience possible for watching DVDs in surround, while looking well-coordinated with the sofa. the studio monitor market is pretty broad right now, there is a good choice of very decent powered monitors available at fair prices.

  • Home Theater with Mac Mini and Mac book Air

We are currently using our Mac Mini 2GHz Intel with our Sylvania HMDI TV connected with HDMI cable. The only downfall is that our desktop has to be close to our tv. I would like to put the desktop in our bedroom and use the new macbook air for tv watching downstairs. The questions is, how would I get all of my content from the desktop down to the laptop to view on tv.
We will also be using Plex 9 when we get a bigger harddrive. Will we be able to run that on the laptop if it is located on the desktop upstairs?
A run down of how someone else has thier home theater set up using something similar would be great!
    Thanks in advance!

The Plex software bundle you download and install includes two components, Plex Media Server and Plex Media Manager. The former (PMS) needs to be running on your desktop all the time, the latter (PMM) is the client that can find the content on your network. When you run PMM on your laptop, it can see the content on any system running PMS on your network, and stream the content from there. The PMM is the 'Plex' you see in your Applications folder.
For more in depth help with setting up Plex, you should consult the Plex Forums.

  • Audigy 2 ZS to Home Theat

    Hi,
I'm new here. I notice Creative have the Home Theatre Cable here: http://sg.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=&subcategory=6&product=4309
I'm wondering what type of home theatre can those cables plug in to And what's the name of that input. What do i have to look out for when buying a home theatre which can be connected to my Audidy 2 ZS?
    Thank you

Just out of curiosity why exactly are you hooking your computer to a home theater. If you are planning to play movies on your pc and output the sound through your home theater I think the digital might be better. Dolby 5. and DTS are both compressed digital signals. If you use the cables you mentioned the sound card needs to take the extra step of a digital to analog conversion before sending the signal to the receiver. Using a digital connection makes this extra step unnecessary. If you plan on playing a dvd audio disc (dvd-a) on your pc then you have to use the analog setup as the digital output is disabled during dvd-a playback. As far as a home theater not having rca inputs that depends. If you are talking about an all in one setup (HTIB, home theater in a box) than it may not have rca inputs. If you are talking about separate components then even a low end surround receiver like the $30 Insignia at Best Buy would probably have the rca inputs, as well as digital. Later

  • Help! Suddenly no sound from home theater speakers!

I bought a Sony KDL 46W5100 TV and the BDVE300 Home theater system at BB. I have always had these two hooked up directly to
each other with an HDMI cable and the digital optical cord. There are no other components involved.
We have always had surround sound to the HT speakers when the television speakers are set to 'audio system'
II am in NO WAY an audio/video expert, but I've had to mess with the settings here and there
after one of the kids reset something and I've always been
able to return the system to proper operation.
I am not sure what happened this time, but I cannot get the home theater speakers to give me any sound when in TV mode or
the BD/DVD mode. Theater mode does nothing for the sound either. I know the speakers are connected properly as they work during the 'test' and also when using the FM radio. I also know I am not on 'mute'
I do get video when playing a DVD or blu ray but no sound. I borrowed a BVD E770W, hooked it up and ended up with the same result.
This would lead me to believe that I have some rogue setting in my TV or maybe my HDMI cable is bad? I'm not sure about the
cable as I still have video through it.
I've re-read all my manuals, searched the forums online and I found nothing
Can anyone give me some advice here?
My family would greatly apperciate it

Try unplugging the power cord to TV and Surround receiver for 15-20 minutes. Plug back in and retry. If test tone & tuner have sound, your receiver is working. This will reset your data lines and hopefully restore operation. If not, and the DVD & TV sound hookup is coming thru the TV, the firmware in the TV may need to be updated found here:

  • Can AE location/placement cause Home Theater interference?

Right now, due to the Internet access point in my home, my AE (upstairs in one corner) is about as far away from my home theater as it can get (downstairs in the other corner). Since my HT is where my Apple TV and PS3 are -- as well as where my wife and I do most of our wireless laptop work, it makes a lot of sense to have Cox Cable come out and relocate the Internet access point to downstairs. In doing so, that would mean my modem and AE would all be housed in my HT Entertainment Cabinet -- where all my other equipment is (TV, PS3, receiver, speakers, Satellite receiver, etc.). What would be nice about this set-up, is I could run Ethernet from my AE to my PS3 and Apple TV. But, will the AE dual band wireless signals be at all degregated by all the other equipment in the same area? Will this cause any sort of 'noise' across my other components -- or visa-versa? Please advise. Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions, ChillOne!
It's a great idea to relocate the AirPort Extreme near the equipment so that you can use much faster and more reliable ethernet connections.
A simple modem could probably go into the cabinet if you keep it several feet away from other electronics, (check with your ISP for their recommendations on this) but the AirPort Extreme should be placed where it can provide a good wireless signal for your home. That means it must not be in any enclosed areas. Think of the AirPort Extreme as a water sprinkler and you want to get the room as wet as possible. Maybe the AirPort Extreme could go on top of the cabinet?
Unfortunately, it's not possible to predict wireless interference issues in advance of any installation. I think you are wise to realize that it will really help to keep the AirPort Extreme at least 3-4 feet away from other electronics or further if possible, even if it means running longer ethernet cables than you might have originally planned.
