Horrible problem that started with the 10.5.3 update.

First I'd like to say Hi, because I'm new here.
Here's my problem. I installed the 10.5.3 update about a week ago, the computer wouldn't make it past the gray screen with the Apple and gear on it. After reading through countless discussions on here, I realized my only option was an archive and reinstall. Which I did. I backed up all my important files, reformatted the volume and everything was fine.
The only problem I noticed after the format was the fact that there were weird files appearing in my trash bin, which I read about, and I thought was pretty much nothing of importance. I then proceeded to update to 10.5.3.
So a week goes by, I try waking up my computer from sleep, and it won't. After about 10 minutes I do a hard restart, and I get a folder with a question mark.
Hardware test turned out with no errors.
So I do a repair on the disc using my Leopard install disc, tons of errors pop up, the hard drive is showing up as unmountable, it can't repair any of the problems. At this point I think it's best to format my entire drive, Windows Partition and all. The only problem is, there's one set of important files left on my computer. I want to get them off. A TDM start only shows my Windows partition on the other computer. And I can't mount the disc.
Am I at a dead end? I mean if I HAVE to lose the files, it's not going to be too much of a deal, however I want to know now if there is some chance I can possibly salvage them.
The partition shows up on restarts, when I choose to start it, I get the "Gray Screen of Death" after about 30 seconds.
Also, is there any fix to this problem?

Well, I am not a specialist, but, first, archive and install does not mean you have to reformat the drive. It just puts aside the last system.
Now, if you have or borrow a second Mac, you could link them with a Firewire cable and start your scrambled Mac in slave mode, to try to access the drive from the other system (either from the Finder or any kind of repair utilitiy, then with a software of backup/restore or directly from the Finder) and then repair it just enough to get the files back. Or if you have a external drive, try to install any system there and launch from there, then do the same as above.
At the end of the day, if there is no way to access the internal hard drive, then yes, cry and reformat the whole...

HELP! iPod sorting artists that start with "The" under "T"

OK, so I synced my iPod classic last night, and now ALL artists that start with "The" are listed alphabetically under "T". Prior to last sync, it had never done this. I didn't change any setting, the only reason for the sync was to add a podcast that had downloaded. It also appears that the sorting feature is no longer ignoring punctuation, because "Weird Al" Yankovic is now alphabetically first, as opposed to under "W" where he was previously. What happened, and how do I get it back to normal?

Hi it's puzzled of Evesham....I didn't ask the question but have experienced exactly the same. I switched the computer on and it went straight to safe mode

Why can I only see artists that start with the letter "A"?

On one iPhone, iTunes Match is fine (except that navigation through the iPod app is PAINFULLY slow!!!)
On the other iPhone, iTunes Match only shows artists whose names start with the letter A. I've gone through playlist mode and downloaded other stuff, but they don't show up, regardless of whether "Show All Music" is on or off.
Help!
Any speed tips would be appreciated, too!

Itunes media folders for musical groups that Start with "The"

I am using Itunes 10.7 and have selected the option of copying files to Itunes media folder when adding to library. When I add a musician group that sometimes starts with "The" and other times don't start with "the" (eg Bee Gees or The Bee Gees) these two names are correctly sorted on the Itunes list - "The Bee Gees" sorts next to "Bee Gees".
When I look at the folders in Itunes/Itunes Media/Music I get one folder for "Bee Gees" and a second folder for "The Bee Gees. I have just started loading music into Itunes and already have 47 sets of folders where the groups are in two different folders - musical group name starting with "the" and another that does not start with the word "the".

As Ed says, that's the way it works. For any similar group decide which of the two forms you think is correct and then use it consistently in Artist, Album Artist, and Composer when relevant. While not the ultimate arbiter of fact Wikipedia suggests that Bee Gees is the correct form in this example.

Problem that starts with *apparent* sticking caps lock key

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (two weeks outside of AppleCare, of course!). Last night, it appeared the caps lock key was sticking. It would type in all caps even when I hit the button and the green indicator light went off. Moments later, I noticed that the option that shows you all the windows on the same screen was suddenly going very, very slow. I tried to restart but it started in safe mode - twice. It finally started correctly on the third or fourth reboot. I hoped it was a fluke.
Unfortunately it's happening again and rebooting doesn't seem to fix it - I can't put in my password to login because it thinks I'm typing in all caps.
Any ideas, please? Thanks.

This may enter the Apple Hall of Fame for stupid posts. I spent a couple hours last night restarting the computer, trying restore etc....and really doing anything I could from clinton's link in order to identify the problem. I'd even called our local store to let them know I would be there first thing in the morning (I'm boarding a plane in a few minutes and really needed my laptop for this trip).
So after doing all of those things + removing the caps lock key to see if it was somehow manually stuck, I go the store this morning. Virtual panic. I needed a presentation off the laptop for a workshop tomorrow and I hadn't backed up since I created it...
I enter the store, I begin to explain the situation in detail, I open up the laptop....
And the guy at the store says "Did you notice your shift key is stuck down?". Why No, I hadn't noticed that! With a tiny wiggle and a tap, that key popped back into place and the computer worked fine. The Safe Mode was happening because the shift key was down.

Since my last sync artists that start with 'The' are now under 'T'. How do I change it back so 'The National' is under 'N'?

Does any one know how to change the ordering of the artists?

Did you try Safe Mode?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

My color crashes after it gets started with the 1.0.2 update

I haven't had a chance to use my color program since I installed it in June. I opened the program and saw that it was running but could not get any images in the preview window and didn't have any time to mess with it. So recently I did the 1.0.2 update and now the program crashes. I am running 10.4.11. The 90 days of support are up and tech support wants to charge me for support on something I have never had working.
Has anyone else had this problem?
when I open color it crashes immediately then gives me an error report saying the application Color quit unexpectedly.

i have 2 nvidia 7300gt cards in my 8core macpro. besides color crashing, if i try and use the image units called:
lenticular halo
radial gradient
sunbeams
it crashes instantly. if i pull all the monitors out of one of the cards, it works normally. i tried the mirror display trick, but it still crashes. although color seams to work.
a few other problems i have seen are that compressor seems to run considerably faster with one card and motion can render larger resolution projects with 16/32 bit color with one card active.
the engineers said that this happens on some machines but not the one's they were testing on. i asked for one of those, but heard nothing back. (not surprisingly)
can someone who has 2 ati 1900's try those image units, i am considering upgrading to atleast one 1900. thanks alot.

I have a late-2008 macbook that is running 10.5.8. I also have a newer macbook that came with snow leopard. Can I use the install disk that came with the newer macbook to update my older macbook?

Also, when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, will I lose all the data that is currently on my hard drive?

No, that SL disk is meant for the computer it came with only.
Upgrading to SL generally will not cause data loss, but you should have a backup of your important files in any case.
You can get a Snow Leopard disk by calling Apple - in the USA it's 800-MY-APPLE.

Now I checked the materials that I got from AT&T Yahoo and
port 25 is used as the outgoing mail port, 110 for incoming.
This is for the POP type account provided by AT&T, not necessarily for an email account and SMTP server not provided by AT&T.
Sounds like AT&T blocks using an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by AT&T on Port 25.
Try the following first.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for the .Mac SMTP server.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this doesn't work, we will go to plan B.

Problem with band names that start by "the"

Since upgrading my iTunes to a newer version, it put all band names which start by "THE" (like for example "The Hives, The Beatles)into the "T"-Category!!! I just want it to put it in the right order again without deleting all these "The" letters from the names in the information window! anybody help meto solve this thing please!?

Hudgie is right... plus you have to see this as an positive point, 'cause he is smart enough to know that almost every band starts with "the"... If you don't like that, and whnat the "the"s something to be between S and U in the window just change the language...
