  • HT1178 can I add a external hard drive to my time capsule

I have a time capsule. and I want to add a external hard drive. how can I do that?

Buy any USB external drive and plug it in. However, it will not be usable as additional storage for the Time Capsule. It can only be used as a separate drive you can use for storage or as a separate backup drive if you switch to it in Time Machine.

  • How can i connect an external hard drive to my time capsule?

I can see it though my airport utility but not my network.

I have the same problem, it is NTFS formatted, is that a problem?
Sure is.. The TC cannot use it.. cannot see it or read it.
You need to connect the disk to the Mac, format it HFS+ and make sure it is GUID type disk not MBR windows type. Although you can also use fat32 IMHO that is really backward step.
Windows can still write to it, as the TC or airport can offer SMB to the network.. it is irrelevant the format of a drive plugged in.
The USB port is underpowered in the TC.. even though the hard disk is powered you sometimes need a powered hub.. and not all powered hubs work.
Also note USB is slow.. connected to a network device it is double or triple slow.
It is far better to plug the USB drive straight into the computer and use it in native format to the OS of the computer.

  • How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule ...

So, I am in Oklahoma and my daughter is in Tennessee...
She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.
    The question, then, is:
How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule to do Time Machine backups?
Thank you very much for your insights.
    Roberto

It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.
The setup for using the TC is explained in the bottom of this thread.
TC in a second local network.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

Can I add an aditional hard drive to my time capsule if the time capsule is near capacity?
If the Time Capsule is near capacity, will it stop backing up?

Can I add an aditional hard drive to my time capsule if the time capsule is near capacity?
    Yes
If the Time Capsule is near capacity, will it stop backing up?
No, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.

  • How can I reformat my external hard drive from the time machine format to regular format?

Ok so when first starting out I got an external hard drive for my time machine, little did I know I would run out of space really fast and would need to buy a bigger and better hard drive. Now that I did that, I have my old hard drive that I would like to use for copying material form my laptop to my desktop. However, it is still set as my time machine and tries to back up my lap top every time I plug it in. Also, it says that about half of it is still filled with stuff. I erased everything on it. I just want to reformat it so that it is like I just bought it.

I had the same idea as you however when I tried going to Disk Utility and I tried to erase it an error message came up telling me that it is unable to erase.
Unable to erase, or unable to unmount?
If Time Machine is trying to back up to it, or some other process is using it, Disk Utility won't be able to unmount it.   Turn Time Machine OFF; if you have the drive open via the Finder or any other app, close it or quit the app(s).
At worst, start up from your Install disc or other alternate source and erase it from there.  If you're not sure how to do that, see the yellow box in #1 of Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to my time capsule to add virtual hard drive space?

I would like to make a 4 TB external hard drive available wirelessly on my home network.  I have heard that I could connect it to my router or my Time Capsule to do this.  Is this possible?  Is there any special setup I need to do to enable this to work?
Additionally, I have two Macbooks in the house and have recently purchased a second Time Capsule.  I would like to back up each computer to its own Time Capsule.  Is there a configuration that would make this possible?
If the two Time Capsules are connected together via an ethernet cable (in extend the network mode), and one elects to back both of their computers up to the primary Time Capsule, does the primary use the secondary Time Capsule's hard drive space to continue backing up once it becomes full?
Thanks in advance for any advice you all may have for me in this situation!

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • Should I add an external hard drive to my Time Capsule?

I have a 1TB Time Capsule that is full.  I'd like to add a 2TB external hard drive.  Can this be done and if so how?

Sure. just buy a 2TB external usb drive and plug it in.. format it via the airport disk erase or setup first by using GUID format HFS+ on a Mac and plug it in to the TC.
If you 1TB is older and out of warranty.. open the bottom rubber mat.. easy with a hotair gun. or even hair dryer and upgrade the disk to 2TB.. google search lots of people have done it .. works fine.. recommend not greater than 2tb as the new 3tb seem to have issues.

What wan ip address do you have.. if the TC is behind an existing router then it will not work directly. The TC has to be bridged.. and you will need to forward port 548 TCP to the IP address of the TC.
And my HD's format type is exFat and I can use it on my mac, why is not work on TC, do you know? Finally I have one more question how can I see my files on ipad or iphone? By the way thanks a lot.
ExFat will not work on a TC.. Fat16 or Fat32 (both not recommended btw) or HFS+.. note if you use fat you cannot use AFP.
Google is your friend.. this took 10sec or less to find.

Finally I have one more question how can I see my files on ipad or iphone? By the way thanks a lot.
ipad or iphone, ie iOS devices do not use AFP, so the access is only via SMB.. and you need to purchase an App to get that ability.
    Again, 10sec on google.. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filebrowser-access-files-on/id364738545?mt=8
Lots of examples though. I have no idea of good and bad ones.. use google.

  • Can I add a USB hard drive to the time capsule

I am wanting to know if one could add an external HD to the USB port on the time capsule?

You might be able to. If you want to transfer the contents of one to the other, you will have to do that via your computer. But, if you wanted to increase memory space, then maybe. Try looking it up in the Time Capsule Manual.
P.S. It does say you can connect USB drives to it.

  • Can I use an external hard drive plugged to Time Capsule to extend it's storage?

I have the first Time Capsule that was out.
It's 500gb and now I need more. But I didn't want to setup separate systems.
Can I plug a hard drive to the USB and make it work as a backup storage as well?
    Thank you,
    Ennio

This has always been possible with any Time Capsule, although as Niel mentions, it is not the preferred method for Time Machine backups.
If you want to try this, make sure that the drive is formmated correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply.

  • How can I add an additional hard drive to my W520?

I have a Yoga 2 tablet - 1050L. A few days ago, it upgraded to Lollipop version 5.0.1. Hortly thereater, I noticed that it had also erased my APN for my local cellular service (I'm currently working in Bolivia, have Tigo as my carrier - LTE service.) Everything was fine with KitKat, but now, I can't re-configure my APN. Wifi works fine (unlike some comments I've seen in other discussions), Lollipop has done several small upgrades since installing, but still, I can't use the tablet at this time unless I'm on Wifi..... HELP!!

    Yes

No, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.

  • Adding an External Hard Drive to a Time Capsule

I want to add an External Hard Drive to my Time Capsule to be accessed by both a Macbook Pro and a windows PC
I've added it ok and I think I configured Airport utility ok yet when I find my time capsule in the network neighbor hood and log in to it
I cannot see the external hard drive. I configured the airport utility with Accounts, with  disk Password and a device password.
yet I cannot see or find the External hard drive. the hard drive is fromatted with Ex-fat
If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
    thanks

As long as you keep the drive at the network location at the Time Capsule, both Macs and PCs will be able to read and write to a drive formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.
As you know, FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4GB for a single file. That may or may not be of concern.
Would recommend HFS+ if you plan to keep the drive located at the Time Capsule.

how do i add an external hard drive to my network

If your external HDD has a USB interface and is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT32, you can connect it directly to the USB port on your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). You would then use the AirPort Utility to configure the AEBSn to share out the HDD over the network.
Please see the following Apple Support article on how to mount the HDD on your computer.
