How can I change my primary Apple ID email to my new iCloud @me address?

I just updated to iOS 5 on my iPod touch and signed up for iCloud. I have a new @me email address. I want to make it the primary email address for my Apple ID, but when I type it into the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" field, it tells me that I cannot use a MobileMe account for my Apple ID. It is not a MobileMe account, and I have never had MobileMe. I know that the email works with my Apple ID, since I can log into my account with it. How can I make it the primary email address?

While you can't currently change your Apple ID to a Mobile/iCloud email address, I found a solution that helps with a related problem.
Suppose you've recently got an iCloud email address, but Apple are still sending all your iTunes Store, App Store and Mac App Store receipts to your old gmail address (the one that's still your Apple ID). And suppose they're also sending all the Apple Support Communities notifcation emails to your old gmail address. How do you change it? How do you fix it?
Well the option exists, but it is hidden away in a weird place. To get Apple sending all of their receipts and notifications to your new iCloud email address...
• Go to your country's Apple Store website http://store.apple.com/
• Click on the Account button in the top-right corner
• Under Account Settings, click on Change your default shipping or billing info
• Sign in with your usual Apple ID and password
• The email address listed under Payment Information is the key
• Click on Edit next to Payment Information and change that email address to your iCloud address
That's all you have to do.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.

I lost/broke my iPhone and I needed to update my password on my apple ID, so after struggling I changed that. I used that opportunity to also change my primary email to one I now use because I created that Apple ID years ago. Because I didn't have my phone anymore, I had to change my ID on nearly every device I use (iPad, Mac). Now, I have a replacement iphone, however I can't get my icloud to work because it has the old Apple ID email. It won't let me sign out of that account or even delete it. I just want to sign into the icloud with my new email. It won't let me sign out because I had find my iphone turned on. How can I change the email on there, or delete that account, or anything regarding the icloud account?
Please help, any feedback would make my life much less stressful.

I am just setting up my new mac and I accidentally put the wrong email for my apple id and now it is set as my primary id for my computer. I have an old email that my apple id was originally connected to. All of my files and music are synced to that id. I tried to change the email to the one I accidentally entered thinking it would be a quick fix, but when I did that in mac set up it was like setting up a new id all together. ( so now that email is taken) How can I fix this to where I can connect this computer to my old apple id and get rid of the the id its associated with now?

If you have apps purchased from more than one account that need updating you have top update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account. As the other replier said, you have to log into the account that purchased than app to update it.

You are evidently both using the same iCloud account, so inevitably you share all the data. iCloud was never designed for mulpitple users. You can't separate [email protected] from [email protected] - they are effectively the same address.
If you want to keep your email separate from your wife's you are going to have to open a completely separate iCloud account; however you won't be able to move your @icloud.com address to it, so it's a choice between changing your email address and putting up with the existing sharing.
Changing your email address is a bit of a hassle as you have to email all your contacts and ask them to use the new one, but this happens quite a lot and most people are used to seeing this. You could also set up a Rule on your wife's iCloud account to forward anything addressed to [email protected] to your new address, so that you would still catch mail from people who hadn't updated and ask them to.
(To set up a Rule go to http://icloud.com and on the Mail page click the cogwheel icon at bottom left: choose 'Rules'.)
