How can I change (or select) what is being being used when I share, as the file cover. When I Share lets say "Master File" i want to select a frame that is used as the file cover. So when its on my desktop I see this image as the file icon.

I don't think Finder does this (I've tried).
iTunes does though. Where you can set artwork or the "poster frame"...
This may not be what you want but if it helps, I know 2 ways do this is
Open the video in QuicktimePlayer7 | View | Set Poster Frame (even then, you might need to save it as .mov (ie in a 'mov container').
Drag the file into iTunes and set the artwork (as in http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/adding-album-cover-art-or-images-in-itunes .html)
From there, iTunes will use that frame as the "poster frame" ie the photo/frame that shows when you browse your videos. Which is what you want, but limited to iTunes.
When I do either of these above, the frame I set does not show when exploring files in "Finder" (or in the other Explorer tool I use called "Pathfinder").
So it maybe, that exactly what you want, is not possible.

99.999% of times I double-click a word preceded of a $ (dollar) symbol, it is a variable name, and I want to COPY it along with the word, so I don't have to re-type it when pasting it.

epub is a specific format that may require another app - I don't know what that would be on 10.5.
You can get info on the file in Finder (select the file, choose File Menu > Get Info…) the 'Open with' section will allow you to select other apps & you can also change this file & apply it to all files of that kind.
That should solve your issue, but you still may need an ebook reader.

Go to Settings>iCloud and turn all data that is syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off. When prompted choose to keep the data on the iPhone. After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID and turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On. When prompted, choose Merge. This will upload the data to this new account.
This will not move your photo stream, however. If you have photos in photo stream that you haven't backed up anywhere else you will need to save these before deleting the account. If your computer is syncing with your iCloud account, your can photo stream photos directly to your computer. If not, open your photo stream album on your iPhone in the thumbnail view, tap Edit, tap all the photos to select them, tap the share arrow button, then tap Save to Camera Roll. Once in the camera roll you can import them to your computer.

You can't change your background to a file on the internet, only a local file (what would happen, for example, if you weren't connected to the internet?)
The simple soluton is to download the image to your system (which you can do any number of ways via AppleScript) and then use your existing AppleScript to set the desktop to the newly-downloaded file.

I imported a jar file called dnsjava, and set my system property to use this so that my getHostName method doesnt use native code to get the host name. My question is, how can i know for sure that it is using the code from the jar file dnsjava? I used a debugger, and it seemed like it was getting it from java.net.InetAddress instead. Please help!

What makes you think that you can set that property in the code and it will work?
A number of properties can only be set from the command line. They will not work when set in code.
I am not sure that any sun type properties will work when set in code.

You can't.
A book is just like an album. When it is selected, the Browser displays ONLY what is inside THAT container.
Other images will not appear there unless they're placed there. You can't load different folders/albums/projects into the browser while working on the book.
Whatever images you wish to use in the book/album MUST be placed into that book/album.
This doesn't mean that you have to use them in the actual book just that you have made them available for use in the book.
As stated before, they are not moved or copied there but only referenced by the book/album. You can have the same image in 100 different albums, but there is still only one master that's being referenced by all those albums.

What are your settings in System Preferences > Language & Text > Region? Numbers uses your system setting as default.
