How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

I found this having had the same problem...
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=553818
Having removed the hard drive I'm finding I can't reformat it. I manage to mount the HD but Disk Utility crashes when trying to format (HD attached to Mac via Newer Tech. SATA cables to USB) and causes what I think is a kernal panic on my Mac which hard crashes. I see 3 partitions when attempting to mount one of which is AFP. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this? I've dug around but the only progress I've made is to note others have had to work around ACL's when replacing the logic board of the TC. Not sure if this even relates to the problem. However the tool for doing this seems to have been removed from SL. (Forum references to this procedure all relate to 10.5).

There are take-apart guides online.  For example
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
However, you can also consider securely erasing the hard drive instead.  You can do this using a Mac OS X installation disc with a version that your iMac G4 can boot from the optical drive.  If this is a viable option, please post back (include Mac OS X version on installation disc).

  • How do I erase info on the hard drive

how do I erase info on the hard drive

If you want to give him a really clean new laptop, the best thing to do would be to erase it (or secure erase it, if there's stuff on there you don't want being found if the machine were to get stolen or something) and reinstall the system from scratch
If you want a simpler method, it's probably easiest to just securely delete anything sensitive (put it in the trash and choose Finder -> Secure Empty Trash) and then create a new user for your son.  Make him an admin user, then log in as him and delete your old user, making sure to tell it to delete your user folder when asked.  Of course, you'll want to make sure your data is safely stored away elsewhere first!
As far as applications go, if they were bought from the App Store, you can legally use them on multiple machines in your household, but you could also delete them by just dragging them to the trash.  For other apps, if they required an installer, look for an uninstaller provided by the company that made the app.  If not, just drag it to the trash.

  • I have removed the hard drive from my laptop and connected it to my netbook as an external drive. Now, I can't find or acces my saved Firefox bookmarks on the external drive. How do I get it to display like it did on the original laptop?

Now that I am using it as an external drive, how do I get the harddrive I removed from my laptop to display like it did when it was still in the laptop , when I connect it to a new computer?. I can't locate my Firefxox bookmarks that I originally saved to the HD when it was in the laptop. The laptop is dead but fortunately I was able to salvage the hard drive. I Need help urgently since I have tons of bookmarked pages and saved passwords that are critical to my work and life. The original laptop that the HD came from has a Windows Vista OS. The netbook I connect the HD to uses Windows XP.

  • How can I erase everything on a hard drive?

I have an external hard drive that I want to erase and then use to archie video.  How does one go about erasing everything on an external hard drive?

You can open the drive and drag everything to the trash and empty it in the Finder.
If your wanting to erase and reformat the drive, it depends what your going to use it for.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's
It's possible to reformat the drive with the same existing formatting, that will also erase the entire drive of all data provided the entire drive is selected, not the indended partitions if any exist.

  • How do I erase everything, wipe the hard drive and reinstall OSX?

I am going to be giving my g3 ibook to my son. I want to erase everything, completely wipe the drive and start from scrath with Tiger. How do I do this? Do I need to be concerned with any potential pitfalls? I know I need to deauthorize the itunes on the ibook, but is there anything else I need to do before I start the process? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have the original software CD's that came with the iBook? If so, I would recommend using them to restore the original software before proceeding to upgrade. This way, your son will have all the original software that came on the iBook (like AppleWorks).
A concern with Tiger and a G3 iBook is that some of them have such a small hard drive that it is really (in my opinion, at least) too cramped for Tiger. It's recommended to keep about 5 GB of available hard drive space for OS X to run smoothly and also to allow room for an Archive and Install if it is ever necessary. The newer the version of the OS, the more important the extra hard drive space is.
Also, you don't say how much RAM is installed in the iBook. I suppose you know that Tiger requires 256 MB for installation, and it would be wiser to have the RAM upgraded to its maximum with a 512 MB module, if you haven't already done that.
    Good luck!

  • How can I limit acces to files on drives attached to my Time Capsule?

My home network is set up with a 1TB Time capsule and several attached USB hard drives.  On those drives I've got a bunch of movies, tv shows, home videos, music, pics etc. that I either stream or transfer to my various devices for viewing/listening.  My wife and I have recently become the permanent guardians of my 13 year old neice and she'd like to have access to some of the media.  In general I have no problem with this, but there are movies and cable tv programs that aren't appropriate for a 13 year old.  Is there a way to give her access to some, but not all of the files on the drives attached to the Time Capsule?  I'm thinking perhaps creating a "Rated R" folder and password protecting, or somehow having the Time Capsule look at which user is attempting to access certain files and either granting or preventing access.  She's using my old G4 tower running 10.6 and will be viewing these videos on either that machine or an iPod Classic, or perhaps a Touch if Santa comes through . . .  and her grades are good.
    Thanks,
    Adam

Thanks for clarifying that you are using Time Machine and iPhoto in regard to your questions.
There are a number of other applications that will back up your Mac to the Time Capsule.....Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper and Chronosync to name just a few. That is why we were asking for more information.
As far as Time Machine and iPhoto are concerned, it is unfortunate that a few years ago,  Apple removed the feature which would allow you to "browse" the images in your Time Machine backups in the iPhoto Library. If you want to restore any images from your Time Machine backups, you must restore the entire iPhoto Library then use iPhoto to view the images that you want.
You can get a good idea of whether your iPhoto Library backups are good by comparing the size of the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder to the size of the iPhoto Library in your Time Machine backups.  If the size is the same, then you know that everything is being backed up by Time Machine.
To do this, click the "smiley face" Finder icon at the lower left of the Mac's screen on the dock
    Open the Pictures folder
Click once on the iPhoto Library to highlight it
Click the "gear" icon at the top of the window
    Click Get Info
Note the size of the iPhoto Library
Now open Time Machine and choose a date from the past from the timeline on the right side of the screen.
Navigate to the iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder
Double click the iPhoto Library and note the size of the library
If the library is being backed up, the size of the library on your Mac and in the Time Machine backups will be the same.

  • How can I clear space on the hard drive?

I am unable to update to Yosemite. Everytime I try, it tells me that there's not enough memory. I've tried deleting files from the startup disc, but some are unfamiliar to me so I'm afraid to delete them for fear of taking out a file the computer needs to run. It looks like I could delete Safari Web Content, however I cannot find any way to do this.

Go step by step and test.

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

About all you can do is wait until it finishes or you get an error message.
