How can I force mailto: links to open my webmail client in a new tab?

I have configured Firefox 5 to use my Hotmail account as the default client when clicking 'mailto:' links. I would like to know if it is possible to have my webmail client open in a new tab by default when composing a message, so as not to navigate away from the page I was viewing.

Open a new tab. In the address bar type; About:Config and press
enter. If you get a page that warns you about continuing, press the
I will be careful button. In the search bar, type; Newtab.
Look for; Browser.newtab.url. Right click and select Modify.
Type; About:home (or what ever page you want) and press
enter. That should do it.

• How can I force a link to open in a new tab on a Mac!?

On Mac, CMD + Click only opens a link in a new tab if that link is located on that same subdomain and domain. If the link goes to another domain or subdomain it will just ignore the click!!!
For example, on www.cnn.com I can CMD+Click on a number of article and they will open in a new tab. However, if the article is to a money.cnn.com or to some other website my CMD+click will be ignored.
Also, would be nice to do the same in gmail. Actually, in gmail the link opens in another tab, but you are forced into that tab, so again the expected behavior of opening in another tab while remaining on the current page is being ignored.
Seems to be an ongoing issue for a few years a no one has provided a decent answer other than install a plug-in. Also, several 'about:config' options I've read about only talk about behavior when opening a new window, nothing dealing with the ignored clicks.

guig2, thanks for the response, but I don't believe this will help. Of the TABs options in preferences the only possibly relevant one is to force a link that would normally open in a new window to open as a tab instead.
As for the plugin the two 'secret options' it talks about, I have already tried, which are basically a twist on the preference options.
It also seems from the reviews of the plugin that it doesn't always work, or doesn't allow you to select which site open in a new tab, which is what I want.
Is there some way to force firefox to interpret CMD+Click as a right-click->"Open in new tab," basically the context menu always works and is the expected behavior for CMD+Click (which doesn't always do this, possible due to the page modifying the behavior).

• How can I force PDF's to open in IE?

I have Windows 7 machines with IE8, Reader 11 with current patches.  No matter what setting I choose in manage add-ons, PDF's open in Adobe Reader, instead of in IE.  I have reset IE, repaired Adobe Reader and verified settings many times.  How can I force PDF's to open in IE?

Yes - those were the first steps.  I have also tried the accessiblity assistant options and that also did not allow PDF's to open in Internet Explorer.  I was only able to correct it on one machine by fully removing Adobe Reader 11.0.04, removing the HKCU registry for Adobe and reinstalling.  This is not feasible on 1300 machines.  I would prefer a reg file that I can push, if I can identify which registry entries affect PDF opening in Internet Explorer.

• How can I force Indesign cs5 to open cs5 documents when both cs5 and cs6 is installed?

We are using Indesign with cs5-specific plugins. Due to that we have both cs5 and cs 6 installed on our workstations. Trying to assign cs5 documents (INDD) to cs5, windows refuses to let us choose indesign.exe (cs5). How can we force cs5 to be the chosen application for .indd?

The best way is using Soxy:

• How can I make the Homepage Button automatically lauch the Homepage in a new tab?

I have Firefox 22.0 installed, I recently did a reset and now have lost the ability I had to click on the homepage button and automatically launch the Homepage in a new tab? I like this option since when I click on my homepage it doesn't override my current page. I know you can configure new tabs to open the homepage automatically ; and that you can use the Ctr+Homepage Button to open the home page in a new tab. However I would like to know what setting I can add/change to restore this missing feature.
Thanks

• How can I force pop-ups being opened in a new tab

We've a new software which always opens a pop-up window when clicking on the Java links. The content of such a re-sizable window perfectly fits into a new tab.
I'd like to force those new windows into a new tab.
Pop-up blocker is active and that internal site is in the exception list.
So it would be nice to have an option field for that in the general settings or in the Pop-up blocker settings.
This is no bug, but could be a new feature of Firefox (like in IE).
Thanks &
Kind regards,
Peter Marbler

The easy way is to install 'Tab mix plus' addon and under 'links' set 'Java script & pop up restriction' to 'open all pop ups in tabs'.
You can also use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ to tweak a bunch of other tab settings.
There is always about:config but more often than not there is the easy way, an addon that will do it for you.

• Mailto links are not working. How do I set mailto: links to open in Outlook?

mailto: links used to open in Outlook. Then they began opening Gmail, so I uninstalled the Google Toolbar. Now mailto: links do nothing when I click on them. I've tried deleting the mimeTypes.rdf as recommended by File types and download actions. I also see that my mailto: is set to Outlook as shown by my Applications setting, but the links are still not working, even though they work in IE. Ideas?

I found entries having to do with the Google Toolbar which I no longer have. I guess the entries are left even after the Toolbar is uninstalled?
Will_T, You are correct. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Changing_the_mail_program_used_in_Firefox#Extension_issues
The Google Toolbar for Firefox includes a "Send with Gmail" feature that changes the mail program used in Firefox to Gmail, regardless of what is set in Firefox options or your system default mail program. It is recommended that you do not select the "Send with Gmail" option in the Google Toolbar. Firefox already has a "Use Gmail" option available by default in the Applications listing for mailto actions. More importantly, uninstalling the Google Toolbar extension with the "Send with Gmail" feature enabled may leave you with Firefox opening nothing at all for mailto links. You can resolve this issue by resetting the Firefox user preference network.protocol-handler.external.mailto to the default "true" value in about:config. See Resetting preferences for details. <br>Note: the Google Toolbar is no longer supported by Google for Firefox 5 and up.

• Safari 3.0: How do I force all links to open in tabs without using cmd?

In a number of other browsers it's easy to set all links to open in tabs. I don't want any separate windows to open and I don't want to have to use the keyboard to force every single link into a tab.
How do I get Safari to do strictly tabbed browsing?
Thanks,
iMactel

Before posting the very same question, I searched first (like a good boy should) and found your post....which addressed the exact question I have.
I'm in the process (of hopefully) of transitioning from years of using Firefox to Safari. The reason: I'm amazed at how quickly web pages open in Safari compared to Firefox.
Anyway, after installing a few Safari add-ons, I'm feeling pretty good about the transion -- except for the fact that I NEVER want Safari to open anything in a separate window unless I specifically ask it to. Evidently, it's simply not designed to do this...

• How can I force Excel hyperlinks to open Acrobat Pro rather than Acrobat Reader?

My Excel (2010) hyperlinks to PDF file always open the Reader...but I want these files to open in Acrobat Pro (X) so I can use all the tools.
Is this possible?
Can I uninstall the reader? Will that force Pro to be the default file opener?
Thanks.
SS

Open Acrobat -> Click to 'Edit' menu -> Preferences -> General (Category)
Now click on "Select Default PDF Handler" button choose Acrobat X from the drop-down and then click apply.
It will reset Acrobat X as a default viewer and your all link will open in Acrobat then.

• How can I configure mailto links to use my Google mail instead of Outlook ? I had it set in FF v3.6

In Ver 3 I had my mailto links using my Google Mail instead of Outlook. How do I set the same way in Ver 4 ?
I'm looking for the mailto app in Apps area and do not see it. That is how I did it in Ver 3.
Thanks,

So I had the same problem and expected it to change with Ios5 but it's still the same. Settings in my iPhone4 v5.0 shows my Mac.com asthe account but Mac.com address is STILL grayed out when sending mail.  Can ONLY send from me.com (which i NEVER use) It's not that way on my iPad, just the VZ phone. Very annoying.

• How can I set web links to open in a new window?

I'm using the links tool in Acrobat 5.05 to create links in my pdf to other websites, not documents. When the pdf is posted online, I need those links to open in a new window. Now they open in the same window, which subjects the viewer to using the back button to return to the originating pdf and waiting for it to completely reload. This is a sizeable pdf file, making that very time consuming. I tried Un-checking the option about "Open Cross Document Links in Same Window" but tests indicated that it made no difference.
If you need more info to clarify my question, please just ask. Any suggestions in regard to solving this will be appreciated.
My apologies if a similar question has already been asked/answered. I did not find reference to it in my search.
Thank you.

You can use JavaScript for this. For example:
app.launchURL("http://www.adobe.com", true);
More information is in the Acrobat JavaScript reference. Note that this method is new to Acrobat 7. You can still use Acrobat 5 to create the JavaScript, but it won't work for versions less than 7, or for most users of non-Adobe PDF viewers. If you go this route, you should add some code that checks the version of Acrobat (Reader), and only execute the above code if 7 or above.

• How can I get one link to open two different PDFs?

Even though I'm only the hardware support guy where I work, I've been asked to maintain the web site. The latest request is that they want to get one link to open two PDFs. I know you can do something like that with web pages, but I'm not sure if you can do the same with PDFs. I only know the basics of Dreamweaver, so, if it can be done, please explain it to me like I'm a 5-year-old. However, I'm not afraid of code. Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.

Hi
You can do this by using the javascript onClick event to load the 2 pdf's, but if I was to see such action when clicking a link I would suspect that it was trying to open multiple pages, (as per spam sites) and immediately close the tabs/windows and never visit the site again.
If you do require two pdf's then merge both pdf files into one, and link to the single file as normal.

• How can I force a popup to open in a new tab instead of opening a new window?

I want to keep any links that I click from opening a new window, ie. if I click on a link in an open tab that opens a new window, I want it to open in a new tab instead. I am on Firefox 5.0.

You can look at the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page.
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction (0)
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (3)
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

• How can I force an image to open fully on screen within action?

In PS CS5 when I open an image with height dimension in range of 1405-1411 or 1873-1882, the image opens half off the bottom of the screen.  Width does opt seem to matter.
I assume this is a bug, but until fixed I am trying to work around.
For manual editing the vertical fit screen button or zooming out causes the image to come on screen, but is neither of these display options will record in an action.
When an image is opened half off screen, a Place command does not place accurately for these images.  Thus an action that includes a Place does not run correctly for these images.
So either I want to find a setting (nothing in preferences that I can find) to force the image to open on screen, or find a command that will run in an action that causes image to come on screen, while not interefering with images that open normally.

The insert menu item command, which I had overlooked (perhaps because it is grayed out to virtual invisibility until action is actively recording), solved the problem.
Thanks.
FYI I had tried all the screen mode options.  Made no difference.
Also FYI a screenshot.  A little less than 1/2 of the image is off screen

• How can I click a link to open a new tab without automatically switching to the new tab?

I use Ixquick as my search engine. When the search result comes up, every time I click a link, Firefox creates a new tab and changes the focus from the search results page to the page for the link I clicked.
I want to have a new tab created , but I want to stay on the search results page to be able to continue clicking other tabs of interest.
I'm new to Foxfire and this functionality was very useful to me when I used Internet Explorer.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Kathy
You can start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
