When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

I think we both had our wires crossed a little.
Then just go ahead and clone your internal drive to your Buffalo. You are not going to use Time Machine, and you do not have to partition it. So ignore all that stuff I posted. Let me start from scratch.
First check that your Buffalo drive is partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. So open Disk Utility, select the topmost entry for the Buffalo drive. You should see something like this:
I have selected the entry of my CalDigit drive. Note that the Partition Map Scheme is GUID. Now, select the volume (mine is "System Backup."
Here you see it is a Format type of Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that's what you see then you are good to go.
With Disk Utility still open:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the Buffalo drive. Source means the internal startup drive. -

Is there any way to make certain files visible in the Users folder? I purchased a plug-in and in order for the update to correctly work, I need to find the old file (which is hidden.) I tried Spotlight but it didn't find anything.
Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated.
ThanksOpen the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. Enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
To hide hidden files substitute No for Yes in the above command line.
To use Spotlight you need to enable the search for hidden files. You need to click on the "+" button next the the Save button in the search bar of the Finder. Then select Other from the Kind drop down menu. Locate the "File Invisible" attribute from the list and check it to enable it. You can now select the option to display or not display invisible files.
Download Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it instead of Spotlight. Easy Find will find everything Spotlight doesn't find. -

That's correct. iTunes will delete any apps you have not downloaded through your own iTunes account. If you did use your own iTunes account, choose iTunes > File > Transfer purchases... to move the apps into your own iTunes Library.

Re-download the apps through your own iTunes account (pay for them if necessary). Apps cannot be shared between different iTunes user accounts. -

but there is another folder Desktop non-hidden + my .Desktop folder always ready when I restart...

ThanksDon't think you can. Your best bet is to copy the backup you want to keep to a different location to prevent it from being overwritten. You can later return it to it's original location and iTunes will recognize it and make it available to restore from. Your backup(s) will be located at one of the following locations:
Mac OS: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup -

I backed up both my OSX Mountain Lion MBP and MacOSX Snow Leopard iMac to the same USB Disk. I then plugged this USB Disk into my Time Capsule, and configured Time Machine in both macs to use it through the network. You can't. Time Machine works differently over a network than it does with a locally-attached drive. What you could do is delete the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume, which contains the backups you made via USB. You should then be able to backup to the same sparsebundle locally and over the network. But I wouldn't recommend doing that. Certainly don't do it unless you have at least one other complete backup (which you should have anyway.) -

How can I force the Time Capsule - Time Machine Couple to communicate via an Ethernet cable for the initial backup without changing the wi-fi configuration of the Time Capsule?
I do not want to change the wi-fi configuration of the TC because it appeared that I was not able to restaure it proprerly after a first "ethernet backup".
Please note that I do not want to use my TC to extend my wi-fi network nor create a new one. But, when I disable the wi-fi on the TC, as I want to restaure it, I only can see "expend" or "create a network" options within the wirless config page of AirPort Utlity; "Connect to a network" is not shown in the list!

Time Capsule end-2011 (2TB - v7.6.1)You MUST change the TC mode to something other than join a wireless network.. because in that mode, TC turns off the ethernet ports.
The join a wireless network is hidden option because apple do not support it and it works poorly.
You can access it by holding down the option key.
You can also save the current settings and restore them after you finish the ethernet backup.
Please note using join means double hop wireless and your TC data speed to the Mac will be extremely slow.. this will also affect your other internet connections and any other computers on the wireless network as it will use most of the capacity for much longer period than directly connecting to the TC.
Basically that is why Apple do not support it.. it is lousy way to work a TC in a network. -

How do I tell Time Machine to add a new external drive to be backed up? I have an external drive with data I need to add to my overall back up with what's on my mac. I have a separate drive already active as the Time Machine backup disk. I can see how to EXCLUDE disks, but how do I ADD that new external drive to regular backups?
I have 10.8.5 system on my Mac laptop.Remove the drive from the list of items set to be excluded. It needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for this to be possible.

New external drive... time machine?
I'm setting um my new external drive, which I bought to back up iPhoto and iTunes for the most part. When I plugged it in, a prompt for Time Machine came up first.
Should I use this as back up if I want to use my external drive or no? I have never used TM up till now, so I'm not sure...Well..I got a new external and said yes to Time Machine. Now it appears I can't use the external in any other machine! I was hoping to back up my old iBook and clean it out, and use the external at Uni as well as home.
Maybe I am just not doing something right, but I don't want my external to be exclusive to my iMac at home. Is this what is supposed to occur? Can I de-Time Machine my external?
