How can I get rid of weird stuff going on? Please help!

Please some one help. Or re-direct me to a web site that can help.
I installed 10.5.1 on my G4 Powerbook 1.67 Mhz from OS 10.3.9
The first thing that went wrong was that the Sound application got grayed out after the restart. The mute button in the Preferences was clicked but grayed out. So I installed again like before. So it worked.
So next I put one of my folders I kept always on the Desktop, where I had saved over the years pictures and things of interest, to have a fast access. I put this folder in to the Dock and tested it and the folder expanded and showed all the files in stack mode or grid. That is the last time I saw the Folder working in the Dock. Next the Icon showed a ? (question mark) that meant the original could not be accessed. Well even though I new the Folder name for sure and searched it, it just had disappeared.
So next I went to Starbucks since I don't have DSL and Downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.2 than I went home. And just for the **** of it checked for new upgrades on my Dial-Up connection to find 4 new upgrades.(Safari 3.1, Leopard Graphic, Time Machine and Airport and Security 2008_002) Since it takes hours to download with my dial up connection I just choose to Download the Time Machine and Airport Update of 10.2 MB. It downloaded and up came the window that the new software needs a restart. So I clicked restart up comes a window that says "Installing 1 item". I had changed my Desktop image earlier but when the "Installing 1 item" window came up it changed back to the back ground that you first see on your desktop after installation. The cloud burst in purple??/
In the "Install 1 item" window the status bar started moving for about 1 inch saying "Configuring Installation" and than stopped. And that was it. I waited for about 45 minutes and since nothing happened and I had no options I had to hold the start button down to shut down. Now after a deal like this I run always Utilities to repair the Permissions. That program is totally out of whack. It stops shortly after you click Repair Permissions and says something like "Repairing Permission Estimated time less than a minute". Well it takes about 10 minutes, than the status bar moves a bit and it says "Estimated time 39 minutes and than immediately counts down (like seconds) to 0 and says that the permissions are repaired. I also see and old blank disk entry that I had ejected earlier that still shows up in the left pane of the Utilities window. When I click on it the Utilities window moves from the First Aid tab to the next tab thats called Erase and ask me if I want to erase the DVD. But there is NO DVD in my drive. Now after Disk Utilitie repaired the Permission the following text appears in the window.
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities"
ACL found but not expected on "Application"
ACL found but not expected on "Library"
Sometimes there are a few more lines of text like this but this is just showing while I type this.
So do you have any idea? what's going on. Otherwise everything seems to work alright like CS 2, Mail, Safari, Word and all my other programs. I also had weeded out as good as I could the old left over files and apps from OS 9 (classic)
Any help would surely be great. Sincerely Volker and thanks for reading this long request.

There's a lot there, so I'll start with the parts I can answer quickly.
The "ACL found but not expected..." messages can be safely ignored, so says this article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
(look below all the "SUID" examples)
I had changed my Desktop image earlier but when the "Installing 1 item" window came up it changed back to the back ground that you first see on your desktop after installation.
Leopard installs updates a bit differently. If it's simply an application that does not change system files, it installs them like before, without having to restart. If the update is to the system, then you must immediately "restart," It then goes to that stars and purple screen to perform the installation. Before, it would do the installation while you still had control of the Mac and would prompt you to restart when it finished the installation. This change probably make things more secure and reliable, because you aren't allowed to do other things on the Mac while system updates are being installed.
Please post back with the remaining point of concern.

    Hi jclarke64,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
I'm sorry to hear that your iPhone 4s was lost, and glad that you were able to upgrade.
If your iPhone 4s was backed up to iCloud or using iTunes, you can restore the backed up data to your new phone.

  • How can i get this set up to work? PLEASE HELP

Ok so right now i have a airport express, and i bought a xbox 360. I want a wired connection for my xbox 360, so the guy at bestbuy said to buy a dlink EBR-2310 switch so i would still have a wireless connection for all the laptops, phone, etc in my house, and still get a wired connection for my xbox from the switch.
How can i make this setup work?
Modem -> Dlink EBR-2310 Switch -> Airport Express
I tryed connecting it all but i cant load a single web page on anything connected to the airport express which is a big problem. PLEASE HELP I CANT RETURN THE SWITCH, THANKS.
btw i would connect the xbox through ethernet from the switch.

Unfortunately the advice you got was not correct. The issue is that the modem is only expecting a single device to be connected to it. By connecting a Ethernet switch directly to the modem, the modem will provide an IP address to the first device it "finds." That means all other devices will not gain access.
What you needed to connect to the modem was a router with a built-in Ethernet switch, like the AirPort Extreme or similar router.

  • How can I get rid of opening message about found photos?

When I attempt to open iPhoto6 on my iMac G5, before it loads the photos, I get this message that won't go away until I respond:
"6294 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library folder that were not imported. Would you like to import them?"
Question 1: How can I prevent this message reappearing everytime I open iPhoto?
Question 2: I have just a tad over 2000 photos in my library and didn't upload more than that. Somehow, those must be duplications. How can I get rid of them?
    Thanks for your help.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • In Mail, one mailbox for Recovered Message (AOL) keeps showing 1 very large message that I cannot delete. How can I get rid of this recurring problem, please?

In Mail on iMac, successfully running OS X Lion, one mailbox on My Mac for "Recovered Messages (from AOL)" keeps showing 1 very large message (more than 20 Mb) that I just cannot seem to delete. Each time I go into my In Box, the "loading" symbol spins and the message appears in the "Recovered Messages" mailbox. How can I get rid of this recurrent file, please?
At the same time, I'm not receviving any new mails in my In Box, although, if I look at the same account on my MacBook Pro, I can indeed see the incoming mails (but on that machine I do not have the "recovery" problem).
The help of a clear-thinking Apple fan would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    From Ian in Paris, France

    I worked it out.
Unhide your hidden files ( I used a widget from http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/developer/hiddenfiles.html)
    Go to your HD.
    Go to Users.
    Go to your House (home)
there should be a hidden Library folder there (it will be transparent)
Go to Mail in this folder
The next folder ( for me ) is V2
Click on that and the next one will be a whole list of your mail servers, and one folder called Mailboxes
Click on that and there should be a folder called recovered messages (server) . mbox
Click on that there a random numbered/lettered folder -> data
In that data folder is a list of random numbered folders (i.e a folder called 2, one called 9 etc) and in EACH of these, another numbered folder, and then a folder called messages.
In the messages folder delete all of the ebmx (I think that's what they were from memory, sorry I forgot as I already deleted my trash after my golden moment).
This was GOLDEN for me. Reason being, when I went to delete my "recovered file" in mail, it would give me an error message " cannot delete 2500 files". I knew it was only 1 file so this was weird. Why 2500 files? Because if you click on the ebmx files like I did, hey presto, it turned out that they were ALL THE SAME MESSAGE = 2500 times. In each of those folders in the random numbers, in their related message folder.
Now remember - DONT delete the folder, make sure you have gone to the message folder, found all those pesky ebmx files and deleted THOSE, not the folder.
It worked for me. No restarting or anything. And recovered file. GONE.
Started receiving and syncing mail again. Woohoo.
    Best wishes.

  • My laptop has a virus, how can i get rid of it?

My laptop has a virus on it and its called AntiVirus 360. I looked up on google what it is and its a virus that disguises itself as a program to help detect viruses when itself is the virus. I've tried many different programs to try and delete it off my computer but nothing seems to work. I also read that sometimes this virus can appear to have been deleted but then when you reboot the computer it re-installs itself. How can I get rid of it completely and permenantly? I have a friend that works at Best Buy and he said you guys could repair it but it costs about $200. I didn't know if there was anything else I could try that you know of. Please help because it keeps messing with my internet pages and is making my computer slower than it should be.
    Thank you for your time!

Stuff like that is better known as "spyware/malware" - There are categories of malware not consider viruses (although often they are installed by a virus as a larger payload).
I would suggest trying Malwarebytes.  If Malwarebytes can't fix it, your best bet is probably to nuke and repave.  (i.e. backup your data files and then reinstall Windows and all applications from scratch.)

  • How can I get rid of ghost songs in library?

I have deleted several songs/lectures from my computer, but they still show up as "ghosts" with a weird circular symbol to their left (see image attached) -- Itunes think they still exist, but they are no longer on my computer .  itunes won't allow me to click and delete them.  How can I get rid of them?

I tried to delete them like I would any song (select and hit the delete key) but they won't disappear.  I also searched for the file on my computer and it does not exist.  I don't know how to get rid of it.  The "stream" songs are all mixed in with my regular songs.

That doesn't mean that you have updates.
Not sure how that app works, - normally means you have a notification for that app - what happen when you go into the app?
If you had update it would be a red number for the app store icon

  • My macbook pro has picked up a UKASH virus. How can I get rid of it.

My Macbook has picked up a UKASH virus and the Safari is locked and wont shut down/close. How can I get rid of this and stop it happeneing again in the future.
Other blogs show how to solve this on a Windows set up, but not MAC
    Any ideas

Yes, it is a varient of the same malware however for Mac users it appears to only infect the browser using a Javascript lock.
Write down the url of the malware site, all you need is the domain name like discussions.apple.com, nothing else is needed.
1: Command tab to the Finder
2: Apple Menu > Force Quit > Safari
3: Relaunch Safari holding the Shift key down to disable reopening of previous pages.
    4: Reset Safari.
5: Report the offending site to: https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_badware/
6: Restart your machine and restore from TimeMachine backup or bootable clone (optional at this time as we don't know much about it on Mac's yet)
    Most commonly used backup methods
7: Harden your Mac against stuff like this: Harden your Mac against malware attacks
