How can i instal an older version of an iphone app?

Two apps (NYTimes and NPR Player) stopped working on one of my two iphone 3G's: the app logo comes up, then it's back to the home screen. One of these apps (NYTimes) was recently updated, so I figured I'd go back to an earlier version. I was able to retrieve the .ipa file from the recycle bin, put it in the folder with the other apps, "hid" the recent version (after having de-installed it from the phone), but I can't seem to be able to fool iTunes into installing it on the phone. I guess somewhere it knows what the latest version is, and won't accept any substitutes.
My other 3G is identically configured but it can (still) run these two apps. I know it's an old model, but it's still useful. My "main" phones are two 4S's.
Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks,

You shouldn't need to. Just update the iTunes application or download the newest version from here.

(used the Adobe uninstaller, used the various packages on the x64 help page; clean installs and uninstalls with RevoUninstaller Pro) shockwave for director is on Firefox, but would not even download on IE. I tried to install an older package, flashplayer 9r280_win.exe and Brothersoftdownloader_for_Adobe_Flashplayer. - clean installs and uninstalls each time., also with no luck.
Can someone tell me how to install an older version until the 64 bit version works for me? Or - if there is a fix that has not been posted yet - I'm game to try.

to downgrade to a previous iTunes version, you could try this user tip that seemed to have worked for some:
+1) Quit iTunes.+
+2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.+
+3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.+
+4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".+
+6) click here to download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the disk image and run the installer.+
+You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.+
+And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything+.

The problem is that i used my Apple ID on an iPhone 4 with an updated iOS 7 and downloaded iBooks on that device. When i checked my iPad, i can't access the iBooks anymore. For iBooks try downloading the current version on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and see if you can download an older compatible version of it.
You can also try similar for the Kindle app - I don't know whether Amazon have made older versions of their app available in the store, so it may not work for that. If not, then as a work-around you could use their cloud reader 'app' : http://read.amazon.com - go to that site on Safari on your iPad and then create a homescreen shortcut for it (kindle cloud reader help)
